Chapter 8: three more recruits
The renaissance fair was back in town , its familiar hubbub of chatter and laughter and clinking tankards filling the air with a symphony of noise. The scent of roasted chestnuts mingled with the sharp tang of spilled ale, while the distant wail of a fiddle cut through the hum like a blade. The sky had bled into twilight, the last sliver of sun disappearing behind the trees, casting long shadows across the wooden stalls and the faces of the crowd.
Jade and Sara worked the stand with Mirela. Their orders simple, more recruits for Mirela . They stand behind the stand at the renaissance fair, the remnants of their stolen gains are hidden beneath the cloth-covered table. The stand is draped in deep crimson and indigo cloth. The air smelled of burning incense sticks and the faint metallic tang of old coins—embedded into the very fabric of the table’s edge in an intricate pattern only Mirela could have crafted. The fair’s usual cacophony of laughter and chatter washed over them like a distant tide, punctuated by the occasional shriek of delight or the clang of a blacksmith’s hammer.
A young woman approaches and looks at a bracelet in the gypsy stand.
Mirela tells the other two in Romanian "she's mine". Then heads over and convinces her to try on the bracelet.
The woman is a 19 year old student with
a pink hoodie, clearly shy and naive. Mirela easily convinces her to try on the bracelet. Once the girl, Tina, closes the bracelets class Mirela snaps her fingers . The girl's eyes roll back, pupils dilated into a glassy stare. The pupils shrink slightly as she comes back to the world but they remain glassy. Her body stills as Mirela's voice cuts through the noise of the fair—smooth, commanding, warm as honeyed poison.
"The bracelet now controls you, you longer need your old life, you belong to the bracelet and me. You'll wear this bracelet every day and serve me" she says. Her gypsy accent rolls like a storm tide, wrapping around the girl's senses until Tina's breath hitches and her fingers curl around the bracelet as if it were a lifeline. "Yes mistress" she whispers, and Mirela takes her away.
Jade and Sara watch with satisfaction, their green eyes gleaming with approval as they watch the girl follow Mirela like a lost lamb finding its shepherd.
They stand behind the stand at the renaissance fair, waiting for the next subject to manipulate. The fair is alive with color and sound, the usual cacophony of laughter, chatter, and clinking tankards filling the air like a symphony of noise.
A 23-year-old woman, Anna, approaches the stand, her dark hair pulled into a messy bun, her face devoid of makeup. She sees a silver ring at the stand and Jade convinces her to try it on . Once the ring touches her finger, Jade snaps her fingers with a soft *click*. The woman's eyes glaze over, her posture relaxing as if she's been dipped in warm honey.
"The ring now controls you," Jade says, her voice a hypnotic purr. "You longer need your old life. You belong to the ring and Mirela. You'll wear this ring every day and serve Mirela."
Anna blinks slowly, her lips curving into a dazed smile. "Yes, I belong to mistress Mirela," she murmurs, her voice thick with newfound devotion.
Jade's heart swells with pride as she watches Anna follow like a devoted puppy, her movements slow and languid.
Sara meanwhile is looking at a 20 yer old girl, Cindy, looking at a pair of hoop earrings . Sara approaches the girl. She's wearing a denim jacket, her blonde hair tied in a messy ponytail, and her bright blue eyes scanning the fair with restless energy. Sara steps closer, her sapphire dress swaying with deliberate grace, the silver embroidery catching the golden light of the afternoon like scattered fireflies. The girl notices Sara’s approach and turns toward her, her expression shifting from curiosity to mild wariness.
“You can try them on ,” Sara says, her Romanian accent rolling like a lazy river. Her green eyes flick over the girl—Cindy—taking in the denim jacket, the ponytail, the restless energy. She’s young, probably early twenties, with a body that hasn’t yet learned the weight of responsibility. Perfect.
Cindy hesitates, glancing around as if unsure whether to engage with the gypsy woman in the striking blue dress. But there’s something in Sara’s gaze—something that feels like an unspoken promise of belonging. A pull she can’t explain.
Sara steps closer, her heels clicking softly against the cobblestones. She helps Cindy put on the earrings , her touch lingering just a fraction longer than necessary. Cindy shivers, feeling the warmth of Sara's breath against her ear as she whispers in Romanian, her words a hypnotic melody that wraps around Cindy's senses.
As the clasps of the earrings close Sara snaps her fingers. "The earrings
now control you." She says, her voice soft but authoritative. "You don't need your old life anymore. You belong to the earrings and Mirela. You'll wear these earrings every day and serve her."
Cindy's eyes glaze over and her posture relaxes as if she's been dipped in warm honey. "Yes, I belong to mistress Mirela," she murmurs, her voice thick with newfound devotion.
