She asked She pulled down the mask in his boys room downstairs she said before putting the mask back on a going back to sanding. Thanks mom, said Thea as she headed down to the old basement. She stopped in the doorway as she watched her 50 yr old dad, try to connect his phone to the sound system. He looked so cute with his glasses low down on his nose. Hey daddy… need a hand she said. He looked over at his cute and sexy little daughter and smiled, absolutely She ran over and jumped into his arms, wrapping her legs around him and kissing him deeply

Chapter 1: The Basement Sound System

The air in the basement tasted of dust and old paper. A single bare bulb swung slightly on its cord, throwing long, shifting shadows across the warped wooden floor. Samuel knelt by the vintage stereo, its wood casing scratched and proud. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, then sighed as they slid right back down.

“Bluetooth,” he muttered to the unresponsive machine, tapping his phone screen. “You’re supposed to be smart.”

The whisper of static and the faint, stuck horn of a jazz record, needle caught in an endless loop, was the only reply.

“Daddy?”

Her voice was a melody from the top of the stairs. He turned, and the sight of her always did this—a warm, sweet punch right under his ribs. Thea stood on the bottom step, backlit by the yellow light from the kitchen. Her long, dark hair was a cascade over one shoulder, nearly touching the back of her knees. She was so small, a pocket-sized dream in soft sleep shorts and his old alma mater t-shirt that swam on her.

“What are you doing down here in the dark?” she asked, stepping onto the concrete floor. Her bare feet were silent.

“Trying to resurrect the past,” he said, gesturing to the stereo. “It’s resisting.”

She smiled, that slow, spreading smile that started in her eyes—his eyes, everyone said—and moved to her lips. She walked toward him, not around the boxes of vinyl records and forgotten board games, but straight through the path, her gaze locked on his.

Without a word, she leaped.

It wasn’t a question. He caught her effortlessly, his hands finding the familiar curve of her ass beneath the thin shorts as her legs wrapped around his waist. She felt like nothing and everything. She buried her face in the crook of his neck and inhaled deeply.

“You smell like home,” she murmured, her lips moving against his skin.

“I smell like dust and frustration,” he chuckled, but his arms tightened around her.

She pulled back, cradling his face in her small hands. She adjusted his glasses, a tender, wifely gesture. Then she kissed him.

It was not a daughter’s kiss. It was deep and hungry, a languid exploration that spoke of shared nights and private language. Her tongue met his, and a low groan vibrated in his chest. He walked them back until her shoulders met the cool brick of the foundation wall, supporting all her weight with his body pressed against hers. One hand stayed under her thigh, the other slid up her side, his thumb brushing the underside of her breast through the cotton. She arched into the touch, a tiny, desperate sound escaping her throat.

“I missed you today,” she breathed between kisses, her hands tangled in his hair.

“You saw me at breakfast.”

“That was ages ago.” She ground herself against the hard ridge of his erection straining against his jeans. “See? He missed me too.”

Samuel laughed, a rough, wanting sound. He dipped his head, kissing along her jawline to her ear. “You’re insatiable.”

“For you? Always.” She unhooked her legs and slid down his body, feeling every inch of him against her. On her knees, she looked up at him, her eyes wide and dark. Her fingers went to his belt buckle. The click was obscenely loud in the quiet hum of the basement.

She freed him, and her breath caught, as it always did. Even soft, he was substantial. She nuzzled into his groin, placing a soft, worshipping kiss at the root. “My handsome daddy,” she whispered, the title a sacred, sensual thing on her tongue. Then she took him into her mouth.

She worked slowly, with a devout patience. Her small mouth stretched, accommodating him. She used her tongue, her lips, her hands cupping and stroking what she couldn’t take. She watched his face—the flutter of his eyelids behind his glasses, the parting of his lips, the way his head finally fell back against the brick with a soft thud. The jazz loop provided a weird, gritty soundtrack.

“Thea… sweetheart… oh, god,” he rasped, his hips giving a tiny, involuntary thrust.

She pulled off with a wet, soft pop. “Don’t you dare finish,” she chided playfully, her voice husky. “Not yet. I need you inside me. I need to feel you, all of you.”

She stood, pushing her sleep shorts and panties down in one motion. She was breathtakingly naked from the waist down, the shirt just covering her. That perfect, tiny patch of dark hair glistened already. She turned, bending over the sturdy workbench he used as a bar, stacked with old tool catalogs. She rested on her forearms, presenting herself to him, looking back over her shoulder. “Please, daddy. I’ve been empty all day.”

He was on her in an instant. He ran the broad, leaking head of his cock through her slick folds, making her gasp and push back. He teased, but not for long. The need was a live wire between them.

With one hand gripping her hip, he pushed.

The initial stretch was, as always, a breathtaking burn for her. He was so big, and she was so small. A high, thin whine escaped her lips as he pressed inward, inch by devastating inch. It was a familiar, agonizing fullness that bordered on too much, the feeling she craved more than air.

“Oh, goodness… oh, daddy… it’s so much,” she chanted, her knuckles white where they gripped the bench. “You fill me up so perfectly. Don’t stop… please don’t stop.”

He bottomed out, his hips flush against her ass, and they both froze, panting. She was impossibly, beautifully tight, a hot, silken fist around him. He leaned over her, covering her body with his, kissing her shoulder through the fabric.

“Okay?” he whispered, the word strained.

“Yes. More than okay. You feel like heaven.”

He began to move. Slow, deep, dragging strokes that made her see stars. Each withdrawal was a sweet torture, each thrust a homecoming. The workbench creaked in a rhythmic protest. Thea’s litany of whispers and cries filled the dusty air.

“Yes… right there, daddy… you’re so deep… you own me… I’m yours… all yours…” She was never silent, her voice a continuous stream of adoration and raw feeling, never a curse, only worship.

He sped up, his thrusts becoming harder, more urgent. The slap of skin on skin echoed. One hand left her hip to fist in her magnificent hair, gently pulling her head back. The other hand snaked around her front, under the shirt, finding her small, perfect breast, pinching her nipple.

She cried out, her inner muscles fluttering wildly around him. “I’m going to… oh, daddy, I’m coming for you!”

Her climax hit her like a tremor, a series of sharp, pulsing contractions that milked him relentlessly. The sight of it, the feel of it, shattered his control. With a guttural groan, he drove into her one final, devastating time and held, spilling deep inside her, heat pumping into her welcoming depths.

For long moments, the only sounds were their ragged breaths and the skipping record. He stayed buried within her, leaning on her, both of them damp with sweat. Slowly, carefully, he slipped out. She winced, a slight soreness already settling in, and turned, collapsing into his arms. He held her up, her feet off the ground, clutching her to his chest.

He carried her to the old, musty couch tucked in the corner and sat, cradling her in his lap. She nestled against him, her hand splayed over his heartbeat. He reached out and lifted the needle from the record. The sudden silence was profound.

In the quiet, she traced the lines on his palm.

“Samuel?” she used his name rarely, only in these most serious moments.

“Hmm?”

She looked up at him, her eyes clear and certain. “I want to have a baby.”

He went very still. The words hung in the dusty air, heavier than any that had been spoken before.

“Thea…”

“I mean it.” She sat up, straddling his lap, her earnest face inches from his. “I’ve thought about it. I’ve prayed about it. My body was made for you. My heart was made for you. I want it to make something beautiful. I want a part of you growing inside me. I want our family.”

He searched her face, seeing no hesitation, only a fierce, loving certainty. It was the most terrifying, the most natural request in the world. The outside world, with its rules and judgements, shriveled to nothing in the face of her devotion. Here, in their basement cathedral of forgotten things, it felt like the only truth left.

He didn’t answer with words. He pulled her to him and kissed her, a slow, sealing promise. When they parted, she was crying, soft, happy tears. She laid her head back on his shoulder, her small body relaxing completely against his.

Outside, a car door slammed. Upstairs, the floorboards creaked as the house settled. The real world persisted, just on the other side of the door.

But down here, in the warm, tangled silence, a new and irreversible future had begun.

But down here, in the warm, tangled silence, a new and irreversible future had begun.

Samuel’s thumb stroked her lower back, circling over the dimples there. He felt the weight of her words, a profound responsibility settling next to the sheer, blinding love. He knew the world outside would call it a sickness. He only knew it felt like the most honest thing he’d ever done.

“Sweetheart…” His voice was gravel. “Nothing would make me happier than to have a baby. Or three with you. But…” He paused, choosing his next words like stepping stones across a dangerous river. “How about this? You somehow convince your mom to let it happen without her divorcing me, and I’ll put as many babies as you want in that belly of yours. Okay?”

Thea’s face lit up, a sunrise in the dim basement. “Oh, thank you, Daddy!” She kissed him, hard and sweet, then scrambled in his lap, her movements feverish with new purpose.

Her small hand reached down, fingers wrapping around his softness. She stroked him, gently at first, then with a firm, knowing rhythm. Her eyes stayed locked on his as she worked, a soft smile on her lips. “You’re so beautiful,” she whispered. “I love how you feel in my hand. How you grow for me.”

And he did. Slowly, impossibly after just having spent himself, he came back to life under her devoted touch, thickening and lengthening until he was fully, achingly hard again, jutting up against his stomach. She made a sound of pure delight.

She sat up in his lap, positioning herself on her knees. With one hand guiding him, she notched the broad, slippery head at her entrance. She was still swollen and slick from their first coupling. She sank down.

It was a slow, agonizing descent. Her breath came in short, sharp puffs as her body stretched to accept him all over again. “Oh… goodness… you’re so big, Daddy. You fill me up so completely.” Once he was fully seated, she braced her hands on his shoulders, her eyes fluttering closed. “I feel you… in my soul.”

Then she began to move.

She rose up, almost letting him slip out, then sank back down, taking him deep. A gasp. A sigh. She set a slow, rocking rhythm, grinding against him with each downward stroke. “I love you,” she breathed, her forehead touching his. “I love this. I love how you feel inside me. There’s nothing better. Nothing purer.”

Her pace increased. The couch springs groaned beneath them. Her hair fell around their faces like a curtain. She was a symphony of whispers. “My perfect Daddy. My strong, wonderful man. You feel so good. You’re mine. All mine.”

Samuel gripped her hips, helping her, meeting her upward thrusts with his own. He was lost in her, in the feverish heat of her, in the sacred profanity of it all. The air grew thick again with the sounds of their union: skin, breath, the wet, rhythmic slap of their joining.

“I’m gonna… Daddy, I’m gonna come again,” she whimpered, her rhythm becoming frantic, erratic. Her inner muscles began to clench around him in frantic pulses.

He felt his own climax coiling, a white-hot pressure building at the base of his spine. “Thea… I’m close…”

Just as the tightening surge became unbearable, she acted. With a sudden, fluid motion, she pulled herself off him, his slick, massive cock springing free. She dropped to her knees between his legs and took him into her mouth in one swift, deep motion.

He saw stars. Her mouth was a hot, demanding heaven. She swallowed him whole, her throat working around him, her nose buried in the coarse hair at his base. Her small hands cupped and squeezed his balls.

With a raw, choked shout, he came. Jets of hot release pumped deep into her throat. She took every drop, swallowing diligently, a soft, contented hum vibrating against his sensitive flesh. She didn’t stop until he was spent, twitching, utterly empty.

She finally released him, leaning back on her heels. She licked her lips, a blissful, satisfied look on her flushed face. She looked up at him, his semen glistening on her chin. She wiped it with a finger and put it in her mouth.

“Leave it to me, Daddy,” she said, her voice husky but clear, her gaze unwavering. “I’ll convince her.”

He pulled her up, cradling her, his heart hammering. He believed her. That was the most terrifying part. He kissed her forehead, tasting salt and sex and destiny.

Upstairs, a door opened. Footsteps crossed the kitchen floor above them. The muffled sound of the evening news drifted down.

The real world. Her mother.

Thea snuggled into his chest, a small, determined engine of love and ambition. The challenge was set. The game was on. And in the shadowed basement, still humming with the ghost of jazz and the scent of their passion, a plan began to form in her devoted, unwavering heart.

And in the shadowed basement, still humming with the ghost of jazz and the scent of their passion, a plan began to form in her devoted, unwavering heart.

She felt its shape, vague but potent, as she lay against his chest. It was a plan that required patience, and timing, and a kind of gentle manipulation she was usually incapable of. But for this, for him, for the child she already loved in the abstract, she would learn.

“We should get cleaned up,” Samuel murmured into her hair, his voice thick with post-coital sleepiness. “Your mom’ll be wondering.”

Thea nodded, nuzzling deeper for one final moment. Then, with a sigh that was all pretend reluctance, she disentangled herself. The cool air of the basement raised goosebumps on her skin as she stood. She found her panties and shorts in a pool on the floor, stepping into them slowly. The fabric felt strange against her sensitized flesh. She pulled his t-shirt down, covering herself, though it did little to hide the glow on her skin or the scent of sex that clung to her.

Samuel adjusted his clothes, watching her. The sight of her dressing, so domestic and yet so intimately connected to what they’d just done, made his chest ache.

She came to him, cupping his face. “I love you, Daddy.”

“I love you, sweetheart. More than anything.”

Their kiss was soft, a seal. Then she turned and padded to the stairs, her bare feet silent on the wood. She glanced back once, a small, secret smile on her lips, before disappearing into the yellow light of the kitchen above.

Samuel waited, listening to the faint sounds of her moving above. Then he slowly followed, climbing the stairs like a man returning from a deep dive.

The kitchen was a world away. Bright, clean, smelling of lemon polish and the lingering aroma of roasted chicken. Eleanor Martin stood at the sink, rinsing a wine glass. She was fifty-two, her dark hair streaked with elegant silver, her posture straight. She glanced over as Thea entered.

“There you are. I was about to send a search party. Your father down there playing with his relics?”

“Something like that,” Thea said, her voice breezy. She went to the coffee maker, pulling down her own mug—the one with the chipped handle that read ‘Daddy’s Girl’. She filled it, the black liquid steaming. “Can I get you a top-up, Mom?”

“I’m fine, honey. Just finishing up.” Amelia dried her hands on a towel. “Sit. Tell me about your day.”

Thea obeyed, sliding into the nook by the bay window. She curled her legs under her, sipping the hot coffee. She could feel a slight, delicious soreness between her legs. A reminder. A promise.

“It was okay. The library was busy. Mrs. Gable came in again asking for books on ‘spicy relationships’ but I’m pretty sure she just wants the covers with the shirtless men.”

Amelia chuckled, sitting across from her. “She’s a character.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment. Thea watched her mother, really watched her. She looked tired, but content. Her marriage to Samuel was… fine. It was a partnership, a long-standing habit built on mutual respect and, Thea suspected, a kind of exhausted affection. The physical spark had died years ago. They had separate bedrooms. It was an unspoken arrangement, a quiet peace treaty.

Thea’s heart hammered against her ribs. This was it. The opening.

“Mom?”

“Hmm?”

“I’ve been thinking about something. A lot, actually.”

Amelia’s focus sharpened. She knew that tone. “Oh?”

Thea took a steadying breath. “I want to have a baby.”

The words landed in the quiet kitchen like stones. Amelia blinked, her cup pausing halfway to her lips. She set it down carefully. “Thea. That’s… a big thought.”

“I know. But I’m not getting any younger. Well, I am, but you know what I mean. I feel… ready. My heart is so full of love, and I have so much to give. I want to be a mother.”

Samuel, reaching the top of the basement stairs, froze. He heard Thea’s clear, earnest voice. He shifted silently, positioning himself just out of sight around the corner, his back against the cool wall. His pulse thundered in his ears.

Amelia reached across the table, taking Thea’s hand. “Sweetie, that’s a beautiful desire. But a baby… it’s not something you do alone. Is there… someone? You haven’t mentioned anyone.”

Thea shook her head, her long hair swaying. “No. There’s no man. There hasn’t been, not seriously. And I don’t want there to be.”

“Then… how? Sperm donation? That’s very clinical, Thea.”

“That’s just it, Mom. I don’t want it to be clinical. I don’t want some anonymous number from a catalog. I want my child to know its father. To have a real, present, loving father in its life. I want the father to be someone I already trust with my whole heart. Someone kind, and smart, and steady.” She leaned forward, her eyes blazing with conviction. “I want to have a baby out of marriage, with a man who will be a true co-parent. A partner in parenting, even if we’re not romantic partners.”

Amelia was silent, processing. “That’s a very modern arrangement. Risky. Emotions get complicated.”

“Not if it’s the right person. Not if it’s someone whose character is already a known quantity.”

Samuel held his breath. He could picture Thea’s face, the sincere intensity of it.

“Okay,” Amelia said slowly, playing along. “Who is this paragon of virtue you have in mind? Do I know him?”

Thea met her mother’s gaze, unflinching. “Yes. You know him better than anyone.”

A beat of silence.

“Thea, who?”

“Dad.”

The word was quiet, definitive. It hung in the air.

In the hallway, Samuel’s knees almost buckled. He pressed a fist to his mouth.

Amelia stared. She didn’t look horrified. She looked… stunned, then thoughtful, as if presented with a complex but intriguing puzzle. “Your… father.”

“Yes. Think about it, Mom. He’s the best man I know. He’s responsible. He’s loving. He has a stable home, a good job. He’s already my family, so there’d be no custody battles, no strangers. The baby would be surrounded by love from the very beginning. From both grandparents.” She emphasized the word subtly. “And… you and Dad… well, you have your own space. It wouldn’t disrupt your relationship. It would just be… an addition. A beautiful, planned addition.”

Amelia sat back, releasing Thea’s hand. She looked out the window for a long moment. Thea waited, her coffee forgotten, every muscle taut.

“You’ve really thought this through,” Amelia said finally, her voice measured.

“Every day. For months.”

“And you’ve spoken to Samuel about this?”

“I… mentioned I wanted a baby. I haven’t… proposed the specifics. I wanted to talk to you first. Your blessing… your understanding… it’s the most important thing.”

That was a masterstroke, and Thea knew it. Framing it as respect, not secrecy.

Amelia let out a long, slow breath. She looked at her daughter—so small, so fierce, so utterly convinced. She thought of Samuel. A good man. A kind man. A man who, in truth, she loved but was no longer in love with. Their physical relationship was a distant memory. The idea of him fathering a child with someone else… it should have felt like a betrayal. But it didn’t. It felt oddly practical. Sensible, even.

It would keep him happy, occupied. It would give Thea the child she desperately wanted. And it would bind their family together in a new, profound way. There was a strange, twisted logic to it that appealed to her own sense of weary pragmatism.

“You’re an adult, Thea,” Amelia said, her tone shifting to something almost business-like. “Your body, your choice. And Samuel… he is a wonderful father. He would be devoted.” A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched her lips. “And I suppose it’s better than some tattooed musician you picked up at a bar.”

Thea’s heart soared. She fought to keep her face calm. “Then… you’re okay with it? You wouldn’t be… upset?”

“Upset?” Amelia considered. “No. Surprised, yes. But upset? What right do I have to be upset if it’s what you both truly want? It’s unconventional. It will raise eyebrows. We’ll have to have a story—a donor story, perhaps. But…” She shrugged, a graceful, accepting motion. “If you want my blessing, you have it. On one condition.”

“Anything.”

“You do this properly. Medical supervision. All of it. And that child,” she pointed a finger, her maternal authority returning, “will call me Grandma. Not Mom. We’ll be clear. For everyone’s sanity.”

Tears, real and hot, sprang to Thea’s eyes. She launched herself from the nook and around the table, throwing her arms around her mother’s neck. “Thank you, Mom. Oh, thank you. I love you so much.”

Amelia hugged her back, patting her shoulder. “Oh, hush. You’re welcome.”

In the hallway, Samuel slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor. His head was spinning. She’d done it. She’d actually done it. The permission was given. The path was clear. The reality of it—the medical appointments, the deliberate, clinical coupling with his daughter for the purpose of impregnation—washed over him in a dizzying wave of taboo desire and profound terror.

He heard the chair scrape back.

“I should go talk to him,” Thea said, her voice trembling with excitement.

“Go on. I’ll make a start on dinner .”

Samuel scrambled to his feet, moving quickly and silently down the hall towards the front living room, pretending to be examining a bookshelf as Thea burst into the hallway. She saw him, her face illuminated with a triumphant, radiant joy. She flew to him, not caring if her mother could see, and wrapped him in a tight embrace.

“She said yes,” she whispered fiercely into his ear. “She gave her blessing.”

He held her, his mind reeling. Over her shoulder, he saw Amelia walk past the hallway entrance towards the sink, humming softly to herself. She didn’t even glance their way.

It was settled.

Thea pulled back, her eyes searching his. “Well? Are you ready to be a daddy again, Daddy?”

The double meaning, the weight of it, the sheer audacity of the future, crashed upon him. He looked at her—his lover, his daughter, the mother of his future child. He saw no hesitation, only pure, unadulterated love.

He took her hand and led her, not back to the basement, but to his bedroom—their bedroom, now, in every way that mattered. He closed the door softly and locked it.

The room was dim, lit by a single bedside lamp. Thea stood before him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. This time, there was no secrecy. There was purpose. A glorious, terrifying purpose.

“We should start tonight,” she said, her voice trembling not with nerves, but with anticipation. “No sense in waiting.”

Samuel nodded, words failing him. He reached for her, pulling the oversized t-shirt over her head. She stood naked before him, bathed in the soft light, a perfect, petite offering. Her small breasts, the neat triangle of dark hair, the curve of her hips—it was all a landscape he knew, but now it was a destination.

He undressed quickly, his huge frame a stark contrast to her delicacy. His cock, already thickening with a potent mix of emotion and raw need, sprang free. Thea’s eyes widened, a flicker of that familiar, awed apprehension crossing her face.

“It’s okay,” he murmured, coming to her. “We have all the time in the world.”

He laid her back on the bed, the crisp duvet cool beneath her. He kissed her slowly, deeply, his hands mapping her skin as if memorizing it for the task ahead. His mouth moved down her body—over her collarbone, taking a nipple gently between his teeth until she gasped, along the quivering plane of her stomach. He kissed the inside of each thigh, tasting the faint, musky trace of their earlier lovemaking.

Then he buried his face between her legs.

He ate her pussy with a single-minded devotion that had her arching off the bed within seconds. His tongue was broad and flat, lapping at her slit before zeroing in on her clit. He fucked her with his tongue, deep and slow, then sucked the tiny, hardening bud into his mouth, applying a ruthless, rhythmic pressure.

“Daddy! Oh, goodness… right there… oh, please…” Her cries were muffled by the pillow she clutched. Her hips bucked against his face, seeking more, seeking everything.

He brought her to the brink once, then twice, denying her release each time, letting her tumble back down, sensitized and desperate. When she was a writhing, sobbing mess, he moved up her body. He positioned himself between her thighs, the head of his enormous cock nudging against her soaked, swollen entrance.

“This is for our baby,” he breathed, his eyes locked on hers.

He pushed forward.

The stretch was even more intense than before, her body still tender. Thea cried out, a sharp, guttural sound of pleasure-pain. Her nails dug into his shoulders. He sank deeper, an inexorable, filling invasion. He watched her face, the fluttering of her eyelashes, the part of her lips as she took him, all of him, until his hips were flush against hers.

“You feel that?” he growled, his composure slipping. “That’s me. In the deepest part of you. Planting my seed.”

He began to fuck her in earnest. These were not the lazy, exploratory strokes of the basement. These were deep, deliberate, piston-like drives. Each thrust was aimed at her core, at the womb he was now determined to claim. The bedframe knocked a steady, urgent rhythm against the wall.

Thea was beyond words, reduced to a series of sharp, animalistic cries. “Yes! Yes! There! Oh, God, Daddy, please, fill me up! I want it! I want your baby!”

Her legs wrapped around his waist, her heels digging into the small of his back, trying to pull him even deeper. The obscene, wet sounds of their coupling filled the room. Sweat gleamed on their bodies.

Samuel felt the orgasm building, a torrential pressure from the soles of his feet. It wasn’t just physical; it was the release of every forbidden hope, every dark wish, now sanctioned and blessed. He pounded into her, his vision blurring.

Thea came first. Her climax was a violent, shaking eruption. Her pussy clamped down on him in fierce, rippling waves, milking him, demanding his essence. The feel of it tore the last of his control away.

With a roar that was half sob, he slammed into her one final, devastating time and held. He erupted. Hot, endless spurts pumped deep into her clutching heat. He could feel it, the violent pulse of his release, flooding her, claiming her. He collapsed on top of her, spent, buried to the hilt, still pulsing weakly inside her.

They lay like that for a long time, a tangled, breathing heap. Thea’s hands gently stroked his sweat-slicked back. He finally, reluctantly, slipped out of her. A gush of warm fluid followed, seeping onto the sheets beneath them. Thea made a soft, satisfied sound and pressed her thighs together, as if to keep every precious drop inside.

He rolled to his side, pulling her with him, cradling her against his chest. She placed a hand on her lower belly, a wondering expression on her face.

“Do you think it took?” she whispered.

“I don’t know, sweetheart. Maybe. We’ll just have to keep trying until it does.” He kissed her forehead. “As often as you can take it.”

She giggled, that adorable, light sound. “I’ll take it as often as you can give it, Daddy.”

They lay in silence, listening to the quiet hum of the house. Down the hall, a door closed. Eleanor going to her own room. The ordinary sound of their extraordinary new reality.

Thea eventually disentangled herself, moving with a new, purposeful languor. She found her clothes, dressing slowly. She leaned over the bed and kissed him, a deep, loving kiss. “Goodnight, Daddy. I love you.”

“I love you, Thea. More than life.”

She smiled, that secret, triumphant smile, and slipped out of the room.

Samuel lay in the dark, the scent of sex and possibility thick in the
