Chapter 1: Introduction
The sun was a lazy, golden ball dipping beneath the horizon as I trudged home from another long day at the community college. The late-afternoon light kissed the leaves of the old oak trees lining the street, casting dappled shadows across the sidewalk. I could hear the distant laughter of kids playing in a nearby park, their joyful cries a stark contrast to the heavy thoughts swirling around in my head.
I sighed, shoving my hands into the pockets of my worn jeans. My best friend Jack always said I had a melodramatic streak a mile wide, but sometimes, the weight of my life felt like it was more than I could bear.
I was raised by an adoptive father who was more famous for fucking than fathering, and my own sexuality was a tangled mess of confusion and desire. I couldn't even look at myself in the mirror without wincing at the reflection staring back at me - the same brooding, sensual features that had made Dimitri a legend in the adult film industry.
As I climbed the staircase leading up to my loft, I could hear the low rumble of Jack's laughter from inside. He was sprawled out on the couch, a beer in one hand and a bag of chips in the other, when I stepped through the door.
"Hey, J," he greeted, not looking up from the hockey game blaring on the TV.
"Hey, Jack," I muttered, tossing my backpack onto the floor. I leaned against the doorframe, watching him for a moment. He was the opposite of me in every way - tall, lanky, and as laid-back as they came. He didn't have a care in the world, or at least that's how he made it seem.
He finally noticed my silence and turned to me, raising an eyebrow. "You okay, man?"
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "I don't know, Jack.
I just... I don't feel like I fit anywhere. You know?" I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper.
Jack sat up, his eyes softening as he looked at me. "Jesse, man, you're twenty years old. You're still figuring shit out. And yeah, maybe Dimitri isn't your average dad, but he loves you. And he's been there for you, right?"
I nodded, remembering the times Dimitri had bailed me out of tight spots, the times he'd been there to offer advice, or just to listen. But that was Dimitri the father figure.
The idea of Dimitri, the porn star, was something else entirely. The mere thought of him sent a shiver down my spine, and not in the comforting way it usually did. No, this was different. This was a slow burn, a simmering heat that pooled in my gut and made my heart pound.
Jack must have seen the discomfort on my face, because he let out a low whistle and leaned back against the couch, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "You're not... thinking about Dimitri, are you?" he asked, a spark of mischief in his eyes.
I felt my cheeks flush, and I quickly looked away.
