Arthur is a scientist of H.Y.B.R.I.D. He has been experimenting with Zachary, who has been getting depressed ever since he got taken and lost his entire family. Feeling bad, Arthur tries to make his equality of life better by giving better food options. What if it doesn't work?

Chapter 1: Opening Image

Zachary purred softly, curling into a ball in his cell, white walls and a metal sliding door that can be opened with a key card. There was a bean bag in the corner of the room, a desk in the middle, and a shower in another corner.

A small table, barely big enough for a plate and a cup, sat next to the bed. The room was cold, the air thick with the scent of disinfectant, and the hum of machines was ever-present, a constant reminder of where he was.

Zachary could hear footsteps approaching, slow and steady. He didn't bother to look up. He knew who it was. Dr. Arthur, the one scientist who treated him with a semblance of kindness. But Zachary wasn't in the mood for kindness today. He just wanted to be left alone.

To curl up in his little nest of blankets and pretend this wasn't his life. He could almost convince himself he was back home, in his own bed, listening to his mom humming in the kitchen downstairs.

"Morning, Zach," Arthur's voice broke through his daydream, as it always did. It was warm and gentle, like a sunbeam trying to pierce through the cold, harsh reality of the lab.

Zachary didn't respond. He just tucked his tail tighter around himself, burying his nose in the crook of his arm. He let out a soft purr, but as a sense of discomfort. "You don't have to pretend to care, Doc," he said, his voice muffled by his arm. "I know I'm just a science experiment to you."

Arthur sighed, pulling up a chair to sit beside the cage. "You know that's not true, Zach. I've told you before, we're trying to understand your condition to help others like you."

Zachary scoffed, finally lifting his head to glare at Arthur. His cat ears twitched, and his tail lashed behind him. "By locking me up and running tests on me?

Yeah, that's really helping," Zachary retorted, his eyes flashing with anger. His tail twitched, the tip swishing against the cold steel floor.

Arthur looked down at his hands, folded in his lap. "I know it doesn't seem like it, but we're making progress. We've managed to stabilize your heat cycles, remember?"

Zachary huffed, turning his gaze away from Arthur. "Yeah, by pumping me full of hormones. I feel like a freak, Doc.

I'm nineteen, and I'm going through heat cycles like a teenager. It's embarrassing," Zachary muttered, his cheeks flushing a soft pink. He tucked his tail tighter around himself, as if to hide his body's betrayal.

Arthur nodded, understanding the frustration in Zachary's voice. "I know it's not ideal, Zach. But it's a step forward. Now, we can control it, manage it. And that's something."

Zachary rolled his eyes, but there was no heat behind it.

He was tired, tired of fighting, tired of being angry all the time. It was exhausting, and he was starting to feel drained. "Whatever, Doc," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Can we just skip the tests today? I'm not feeling up to it."

Arthur looked at him, concern etched on his face. "Of course, Zach. Whatever you need." He paused, then added, "How about I bring you something different for lunch? That synthetic stuff can't be very appetizing."

Zachary's ears perked up at that.

Food was always a sensitive topic for him. The synthetic stuff they fed him here was barely edible, and it left him feeling hungry and unsatisfied. But he didn't want to show Arthur how much it bothered him. So, he just shrugged, trying to play it cool.

"Sure, Doc. Surprise me," he said, his voice laced with a hint of sarcasm. But Arthur just smiled, undeterred.

"I will. But first, let's get you something to tide you over. How about some coffee? I could use a cup myself," Arthur said, standing up and heading towards the break room.

"If you have been studying me this whole time, you would know that I'm allergic to coffee." Zachary replied, his voice flat. He knew Arthur meant well, but he couldn't help but feel irritated. It was always the same - Arthur trying to be nice, and Zachary pushing him away.

Arthur paused, mid-step, and turned back to Zachary. "Ah, that's right. I apologize, Zach. I didn't mean to... well, you know." He scratched the back of his neck, looking flustered. "How about tea instead? Herbal, of course. No caffeine."

Zachary let out a small sigh, his shoulders slumping. He was being too hard on Arthur.

The man was just trying to help, but Zachary couldn't shake off the bitter taste of resentment that lingered in his mouth. He watched as Arthur bustled around, preparing the tea, his movements clumsy yet endearing. Despite himself, Zachary felt a small smile tug at the corners of his mouth.

"So, what do you think? Chamomile or peppermint?" Arthur asked, holding up two tea bags, his eyes hopeful.

Zachary shrugged, his tail flicking behind him. "Chamomile, I guess.

It's not like it matters," Zachary replied, his voice barely above a whisper. He watched as Arthur filled a mug with hot water and dunked the tea bag in, the steam rising in a thin, wispy cloud.

Arthur brought the mug over, placing it carefully on the small table by Zachary's bed. "Here you go," he said, smiling softly. "It's not much, but it's something warm and real, not that synthetic stuff you usually get."

Zachary wrapped his hands around the mug, feeling the warmth seep into his cold fingers.

The bitterness of the chamomile was a familiar comfort, something that reminded him of home.

Arthur watched, his eyes soft. He knew this small gesture couldn't make up for everything that Zachary lost, but it was a start.

Zachary lifted the mug, taking a sip. He closed his eyes, letting the warmth spread through his body, chasing away the chill that had settled deep within him. He felt a small flicker of gratitude towards Arthur, his heart beating a little slower, his breathing deeper.

He opened his eyes, looking at Arthur's hopeful expression.

"Thanks, Doc," Zachary said, his voice quiet. "I needed that."

Arthur beamed, visibly relieved. "You're welcome, Zach. Remember, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

Zachary nodded, and the moment passed. Arthur went back to his usual routine of checking on the machines and writing notes in his clipboard.

Zachary took another sip of tea and felt a sense of calm wash over him.

He put the mug down and looked at Arthur, who was busying himself with the various gadgets and machinery in the lab. Zachary gazed at him for a moment, noting the wrinkles around his eyes and the lines on his forehead. The man looked tired, but there was a determination in his gaze.

Zachary knew that Arthur meant well, but he couldn't shake off the feeling that they were playing a game of chess and he was just a pawn on the board.

Arthur also seemed to be making a new jumpsuit for Zachary. This one was light blue.

It was a nice change from the standard white jumpsuit Zachary had been wearing for the past year. He watched with growing curiosity as Dr. Arthur worked on the new outfit, carefully cutting and sewing, his focus total.

"How's the tea, Zach?" Arthur asked, looking up from his work.

Zachary took another sip. "It's good, Doc," he replied, appreciative. "It reminds me of home."

"I'm glad," said Arthur, smiling.

"I think the light blue color will complement your skin tone. Moreover, I've made a few changes to the jumpsuit design as well. Perhaps it will make the long days here more comfortable for you."

Zachary watched Arthur for a moment, then let out a small laugh. "You know I can't wear this out in public, right, Doc?" He gestured to the jumpsuit, which was still unfinished but looked like it was fit for a superhero.

Arthur chuckled, too, and shook his head. "If I try hard enough, maybe you might." Arthur replied with a wink, causing Zachary to chuckle again.

Over the past few weeks, there seemed to be a thaw in the relationship between the two. Not friends, not yet, but they had reached a sort of cautious understanding. Zachary appreciated that Arthur, despite being a scientist at H.Y.B.R.I.D, still treated him with a measure of respect and dignity. And Arthur, in turn, admired Zachary's resilience and strength.
