Chapter 1: Lens Focus on Hidden Desires
Marco called me at seven in the morning, his voice crackling through the phone with that urgent, rushed edge he gets when his life is spiraling. "T, I need a favor. A big one."
"At seven AM?" I groaned, rolling over in bed, squinting at the sunlight bleeding through my blinds.
"My mom. She has a shoot this morning. I was supposed to drive her, but I've got a client emergency that can't wait. I'm already at the construction site. You remember where she lives, right?"
I sat up, the name hitting me like a splash of cold water. Lucia. Marco's mother. The woman I'd known since I was eight years old, running through their backyard, stealing cookies from her kitchen counter while she laughed that warm, melodic laugh. I hadn't seen her in almost a year. Last I heard, she was still modeling, still graceful, still untouchable.
"Yeah," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I remember."
"Thank you. I owe you one. She's ready now, just pick her up. I'll text you the address of the studio."
The line went dead. I stared at my phone for a moment, then swung my legs out of bed, my pulse doing something strange and quick.
I threw on a fitted white henley and dark denim, pulling the fabric taut over my shoulders as I looked at myself in the mirror. I ran a hand over my close-cropped hair, wondering why I cared about how I looked for a simple drive. I told myself it was just respect. She was my best friend's mom, a family figure, a woman old enough to be my own mother. Nothing more.
The drive to her house took fifteen minutes. I parked outside the modest colonial, the familiar pale-yellow siding and manicured hedges bringing back a flood of childhood memories. I hadn't been here since Marco and I graduated high school together, the summer we'd spent too many nights on this porch, too many cheap beers, too much laughter. Lucia had come out once, wrapped in a silk robe, her hair loose around her shoulders, and told us to keep it down. I remembered the way her silhouette looked in the porch light, softened and golden. I'd been eighteen then, and I hadn't understood the feeling that stirred in my chest. I buried it so deep I forgot about it. Buried it for four years.
The front door opened before I could knock. Lucia stepped out, and the breath caught in my throat.
She was dressed in a structured charcoal-grey silk wrap dress that cinched at her waist, the fabric falling just above her knees to reveal long, toned legs. A gold pendant rested at the base of her throat, catching the morning light. Her hair was sleek, a dark bob that framed her jawline, and her hazel eyes were deep-set and warm, though they held that slight stiffness that comes from being rushed.
"Tomas," she said, and her voice was exactly as I remembered it. Melodic, smooth, with a hint of command underneath. "Marco sent you."
"Yes, ma'am." I smiled, hoping I looked relaxed. "Your chariot awaits."
She arched an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement crossing her face. "I haven't been called ma'am since I was forty." A beat. "Well. I suppose I am forty now."
I laughed, a little too quickly. "You don't look it."
It slipped out before I could stop it. She paused, studying me for a moment, and something shifted in her gaze. Not quite surprise. Not quite suspicion. Just awareness, like she was really seeing me for the first time as someone other than her son's scrawny little friend.
"Thank you, Tomas." She smoothed the front of her dress and walked toward my car, the click of her heels sharp against the concrete driveway.
I moved ahead and opened the passenger door for her. She hesitated, then slid in, and I caught a whiff of expensive perfume, something floral and dark, with undertones of vanilla. It lingered in the car even after I closed her door and walked around to the driver's side.
The drive started in silence. The morning traffic was light, and I kept my eyes on the road, but I could feel her presence beside me like a charge in the air. She had her legs crossed, one foot dangling, and she looked out the window with that measured, practiced poise of someone used to being watched.
"Marco mentioned you work in construction now," she said finally.
"I do. Site manager trainee. Long hours, but good pay."
"Mmm." She nodded. "He says you're doing well for yourself."
"He says I'm doing well?" I let out a low chuckle. "That's generous of him, considering I made him get up at six AM once to help me move a couch."
She laughed, a genuine, throaty sound. "I remember that couch. It was orange. Hideous." She tilted her head to look at me. "You've grown up, Tomas. You used to be all elbows and knees."
"Still am, sometimes," I said, and she smiled.
We drove another few blocks. The neighborhood shifted from residential to industrial, low warehouses giving way to taller structures with blacked-out windows and steel doors. The art district sprawled ahead of us, graffiti bright against brick walls.
"You can drop me off and go explore the area," she said, gesturing vaguely. "There's a coffee shop down the street, I think. Or I can call a car for the way back. I don't want to keep you all day."
I glanced at her, then back at the road. The thought of standing in some dusty gallery alone while she worked didn't appeal. But more than that, I was curious. I'd seen her photographs for years, clipped from magazines that Marco kept in his room. Elegant, untouchable images of a woman who seemed to belong to a different world entirely. I'd watched those images change through my teen years, cataloging how her beauty matured, how the angles of her face grew sharper and more compelling.
"I wouldn't mind staying, actually," I said, keeping my voice casual. "I've seen your work in magazines since I was a teenager. Never seen how it's made. If that's not too strange."
She was quiet for a long moment. When I looked at her, her expression was unreadable, hazel eyes fixed on the windshield.
"It's not strange," she said softly. "Most people don't ask. They just assume a photoshoot is boring and technical."
"Is it?"
She let out a small breath. "Sometimes. And sometimes it's something else entirely."
We pulled up to a massive industrial loft building, its facade painted in peeling black that looked intentional. A heavy steel door with a small camera logo stenciled on it marked the entrance. I parked, and as I shut off the engine, the silence felt heavier than the morning had been.
Lucia opened her door, and I hurried around to help her out. This time, when her hand touched mine, it lingered just a moment longer than necessary. Our eyes met, and I saw something flicker in her expression. A question, maybe. Or a warning.
"Thank you, Tomas," she murmured, and I let go of her hand slowly, my palm still warm where she'd touched me.
We walked to the steel door together. I'd expected her to knock, but before she could, the door swung open, revealing a woman in her late twenties with a headset pushed up over her curly hair and a clipboard clutched to her chest.
"Lucia, you're here!" she chirped, beaming. "The team is all set up. Andres is already warming up. Oh, you must be her driver?"
"Actually, I—" I started.
"He's an old family friend," Lucia said smoothly, her voice sliding back into that practiced professional tone. "He'll be observing today, if that's alright."
The woman glanced at Lucia, then at me, then smiled brightly. "Of course! We always love having an audience. I'm Denise, the director's assistant. Right this way."
She turned and led us through a dark, narrow corridor. The air smelled like ozone and something musky, and I could hear the muffled hum of machinery deeper inside. My heart was beating harder than it should have been. Lucia walked ahead of me, her hips swaying gently with each step, and I forced myself to look at the exposed brick walls instead.
We emerged into the studio, and I stopped dead.
It was cavernous, a vast open space that must have once been a factory floor. Harsh studio lights hung from steel beams overhead, casting pools of blinding white light onto a shoot area below. In the center sat a velvet chaise, deep burgundy, its fabric looking so soft and plush that it seemed almost obscene in the industrial setting. Behind it, a backdrop of black silk rippled slightly from some unseen draft. Heavy shadows pooled at the edges of the room, swallowing the far corners.
And standing near the chaise, bare-chested and utterly composed, was a man I'd never seen before.
He was lean, with sharp angular features and high cheekbones that looked carved from marble. His blond hair was cut short and precise, and pale grey eyes were fixed on a point somewhere in the middle distance, calm and unworried. His torso was a study in controlled athleticism, every muscle defined but not bulky, corded and hard under the brilliant light. A thin silver chain glinted at his collarbone. He wore only a pair of charcoal-grey trousers, low-rise, fine-weave, tailored to sit dangerously low on his hips.
"Lucia," the man said, his voice low and smooth. "Ready to make something beautiful?"
I watched Lucia's shoulders tense, then relax. She turned to face him, painting on a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Andres," she said. "It's been a while."
"Too long," he replied, and there was something in the way he said it that made my stomach twist.
Before I could parse the weight of those words, a woman emerged from the shadows at the far end of the loft. She was older than Denise, maybe mid-fifties, with silver-streaked hair pulled back in a severe bun and glasses perched on the bridge of her nose. She wore all black, head to toe, and carried herself with the kind of quiet authority that made the air in the room shift. She walked straight past Andres without acknowledging him and stopped in front of Lucia, taking both her hands in hers.
"Lucia. My god, you look incredible."
"Elena." Lucia's smile softened, became something real. "It's been too long. I didn't know you were directing this one."
"I specifically requested you," Elena said, squeezing her hands. "When the client came to me with this concept, I thought of nobody else. You're the only one who can pull this off with the right amount of restraint and fire." She released Lucia's hands and gestured toward the chaise, the black silk backdrop, the whole cavernous set. "This is a campaign for a luxury perfume house. The theme is forbidden. A wealthy, sophisticated woman in her prime, and a young man who falls hopelessly for her. The tension of wanting something you shouldn't want. The moment before the fall."
I pressed my back against the exposed brick wall in the shadows, trying to make myself invisible. Denise had drifted over to a monitoring station with two other crew members, a man adjusting a large camera on a tripod and a woman holding a light meter. None of them looked at me. I was just the driver, the family friend, the ghost in the corner.
Elena continued, pacing slowly around the chaise. "We'll shoot four rounds. Each round, a new wardrobe. Each round, the barrier between the two of you comes down a little more. The client wants a narrative arc: restraint, tension, desire, release. By the final round, you'll be naked in a tub together, and we'll capture the aftermath of a passionate encounter." She stopped and looked at Lucia with those sharp, assessing eyes. "You'll need to sell it. Every sigh, every twitch, every look. They want to feel like they stumbled onto something they shouldn't have seen."
Lucia's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "And Andres?"
"We've worked together before," Andres said, stepping forward. His voice was calm, practiced, disarmingly gentle. "Elena knows I can handle the physicality without making it weird. It's a job. I treat my body like an instrument." He looked at Lucia, and his grey eyes flickered with something that might have been amusement. "You just have to trust me."
"I trust the work," Lucia said, her voice cool.
Elena clapped her hands once. "Excellent. Round one. Lucia, you'll start in the black silk robe. Underneath, a full slip, vintage cut, lace hem. Andres, you in the trousers you have on. We'll do a series of proximity shots first. The tension of not touching. Then we'll move into the first moments of contact." She pointed at me, and my heart jumped. "You. Young man. Come stand by the monitor. I want fresh eyes on the composition."
I pushed off the wall and walked over, feeling Lucia's gaze slide across me for a split second before she turned away. She shrugged off the charcoal dress with practiced efficiency, revealing the robe Elena had mentioned, a deep black silk kimono-style piece that tied at her waist. Beneath it, the slip: a floor-length ivory lace-and-silk number with a deep V neckline that plunged between her breasts, the fabric so fine I could see the shadow of her body moving beneath it.
I swallowed hard and looked at the monitor.
The camera was positioned low, angled up at the chaise. Andres moved first, crossing to the chaise and sitting on its arm, his bare torso catching the light in ridges and hollows. He looked like a sculpture, all lean muscle and controlled stillness. Lucia circled the chaise slowly, buying time, letting the robe whisper against her legs. The crew fell silent. Even the air seemed to hold its breath.
"Good," Elena murmured, standing behind the photographer. "Lucia, stop there. Look at him. Not a smile. Something hungrier."
Lucia turned her head and looked at Andres. In profile, her features sharpened, and I saw something cross her face that I'd never seen in all the years I'd known her. It was a mask, yes, but the mask itself was made of desire. Her lips parted slightly. Her chest rose and fell faster.
"Perfect. Andres, slide off the arm. Stand in front of her. Close. Not touching."
Andres rose and stepped toward her, stopping a breath away. The difference in their heights was stark, her a full head shorter than him. He looked down at her, and she looked up at him, chin lifted, and the space between them crackled like a live wire.
The camera clicked. A rapid, rhythmic sound, like rain on a tin roof.
"Closer," Elena said. "Andres, put your hand on her waist. Lucia, don't react. Keep your eyes on his."
Andres raised his hand and placed it on her hip through the silk robe. His fingers spanned the curve of her waist, tanolive against the black fabric. I watched the breath leave Lucia's body. Her hand, which had been resting at her side, lifted almost involuntarily and touched his bare chest, fingers splayed across his pectoral.
The click of the shutter grew faster.
"God, yes," the photographer breathed, a man I'd barely noticed until now, his face half-hidden behind the camera.
"Round two," Elena called out, breaking the spell. "Wardrobe change. Lucia, the slip comes off. You'll be in a corset and high-waisted briefs. Andres, trousers off. Briefs only."
My mouth went dry.
Denise hurried forward to help Lucia unlace the slip. Andres stepped back, unhooking his trousers with a casual efficiency that made my stomach clench. He stepped out of them, and I caught a glimpse of his body in full: lean hips, a V-shaped line of muscle cutting down from his waist, the thin fabric of his briefs doing absolutely nothing to hide the length of him pressed against it.
Lucia turned away from him, facing the shadows, and shrugged the slip off her shoulders. The corset beneath was deep emerald, satin, with black lacing up the back and boning that cinched her waist into a dramatic hourglass curve. The briefs were high-waisted, matching emerald, smooth across her hips, cutting high on her thighs. The robe was gone, the slip was gone, and for the first time since I was a teenager, I saw the shape of her body with almost nothing between us.
She turned back around. The corset pushed her breasts up into soft, full curves, and the deep plunge of the neckline showed the shadow of cleavage, the delicate gold pendant now resting against bare skin. Her legs were long, sculpted, gleaming slightly under the studio lights. Andres let out a low, audible breath.
"Now," Elena said, "I want contact. Real contact. Andres, I want you to press your chest against her back. One hand on her waist, the other on her throat. Not choking, just resting. Possessive. Lucia, tilt your head back against his shoulder. Close your eyes. Let yourself be held."
They moved into position, and I watched the monitor, transfixed. Andres pressed his bare chest against her bare back, the curve of her spine fitting perfectly against his pectorals. His hand slid around her waist, fingers spreading wide over her corseted stomach. His other hand came up and rested against the column of her throat, thumb grazing her jaw, tilting her head back until her lips parted.
For a long, frozen moment, neither moved. Then Lucia let out a breath, a soft, shuddering sound, and I saw her body soften against his. Her hand came up, and she laid it over his where it rested on her throat, holding him there.
The shutter clicked, faster and faster.
"Good," Elena murmured. "Hold that. The tension is perfect. Andres, trail your hand down her waist. Lower. Rest it on her hip, just above the briefs. Lucia, arch your back. Press into him."
Andres's hand traveled down, torturously slow, tracing the curve of her corseted waist before settling on the swell of her hip. His thumb brushed the edge of the briefs, stroking the skin just beneath the fabric. Lucia's breath caught. I saw the flash of her tongue wetting her lower lip, and a deep, gut-twisting ache spread through my chest.
I wanted to be him. I wanted my hands on her. And the shame of that wanting burned in my throat like acid.
"Round three," Elena said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The corset and briefs come off. You'll both be in robes. Sheer robes. And I want a scene of him laying her down on the chaise. On top of her. Skin on skin where the robes fall open."
Denise and another assistant stepped in. I watched helplessly as Lucia's corset was unlaced, whalebone loosening, her skin emerging from the emerald satin in a slow reveal. The briefs came off next, and for a heartbeat she was completely naked before the robe was wrapped around her, a whisper-thin garment of ivory mesh that left nothing to the imagination. I saw the dark crest of her nipples through the fabric, the shadow between her thighs, the elegant line of her hips.
Andres stripped off his briefs without ceremony, his back to me, and I caught a glimpse of the taut, rounded curves of his ass before he shrugged into his own robe. The mesh of his robe was the same sheer ivory, and when he turned, I saw the full outline of his body, the heavy swing of a cock that was already half-hard and thickening as the light hit him.
"Fuck," I whispered, and Denise looked at me. I coughed, looked away, felt heat climbing up my neck.
"Lucia, lie down on the chaise," Elena said. "Head against the arm. Legs over the other side. Andres, I want you to cover her. Braced on your forearms. Your face in her neck. The robes should fall open where your bodies meet, and there should be nothing between your skin."
Lucia sank into the velvet chaise, her head resting against the curved arm. The sheer robe pooled around her, leaving her legs bare to the hip. She looked up at Andres as he bent over her, and I saw her hands rise of their own accord, sliding up his forearms, over his shoulders, pulling him down toward her.
He settled on top of her, his body fitting against hers with a familiarity that made my stomach churn. The robes fell away where their bodies pressed together, and I could see the line of his spine, the dip of his lower back, the strained fabric of the mesh tenting where his cock pressed against the inside of her thigh.
The shutter clicked. The sound was obscene in the silence.
Andres lowered his face to her neck. I saw his lips part, his tongue touch her skin, and Lucia shuddered. Her hips shifted beneath him, pressing up against him, and a low, involuntary sound escaped her throat. It was barely audible over the camera, but I caught it, a soft, broken gasp.
"Keep going," Elena commanded. "Andres, kiss down her chest. Lucia, arch your back. Let them see you lose control."
I gripped the edge of the monitor station, my knuckles white. Andres's mouth traveled down, over her collarbone, lower, nuzzling the sheer fabric that covered her breasts. Lucia's head fell back, her throat exposed, and I watched the tendons of her neck strain as she panted. Her fingers twisted in his short hair, dragging his face closer, and through the mesh I saw her nipple harden against the fabric.
"Round four," Elena said, and her voice had a tensile quality, stretched thin. "The final. The tub."
The assistants wheeled a copper tub into the light, filled with steaming water, rose petals scattered on the surface. More water. The set was rearranged, the chaise pushed aside, and I watched with a growing, clawing confusion as Lucia and Andres shed their robes together, as casual as if they were alone.
And then they were naked, truly naked, stepping into the copper tub together.
The water came up to their collarbones. Andres sat first, his back against the curved metal, legs spread. Lucia lowered herself between his thighs, her back against his chest, her head resting on his shoulder. The water rippled around them, rose petals clinging to their skin, and from my angle, standing at the corner of the set, I could see more than the camera could.
The camera was positioned in front of them, capturing their faces, the suggestion of their bodies beneath the water. But I was off to the side, and the water was only a few inches deep at the edges, and I could see the shadow of Andres's cock rising against his stomach, and I could see the way Lucia's hips shifted against him, slowly, rhythmically, as if she didn't know she was doing it.
"Elena wants expressions of having sex," the photographer murmured. "Give me the faces. The gasps. The twitches. Make it real."
Andres's arm wrapped around Lucia's stomach, his forearm pressed just below her breasts. His other hand came up to her face, tilting it toward his, and I saw him whisper something against her ear. Her lips parted. A shudder ran through her whole body.
"More," Elena said. "Andres, thrust. Gently, but visibly. Let me see the water move."
Andres obeyed, and the water stirred around them. Lucia's head fell back against his shoulder, her eyes closing, and I saw her lips form a word I couldn't hear. Her hips began to move with him, matching his rhythm, and the water sloshed gently against the copper walls.
I couldn't tell if it was real.
The thought clawed at me. They were professionals. Elena had asked for expressions of having sex, for humping, for visible twitches. But the way Lucia's hand slid down Andres's thigh beneath the water, the way her fingers found him, the way her body bucked and pressed and gasped... it looked real. It sounded real.
The shutter clicked, faster and faster, capturing it all. Denise was staring, her clipboard forgotten. The photographer was sweating behind his lens. even Elena had gone still, watching with a hunter's intensity.
And my cock was rock hard in my jeans, painful against the denim, as I watched the woman I'd known since childhood twitch and shiver on top of the model's body, her mouth open, her face a mask of desperate pleasure.
The water moved faster. Andres's hand disappeared beneath the surface, and Lucia's whole body jolted, a sharp, bitten-off cry escaping her throat. Her hand flew back to fist in his hair, pulling his face down to her neck, and I saw his arm flex, the muscles straining, and the water sloshed, and her legs clenched visibly beneath the surface.
"Is she...?" the assistant whispered, and Denise grabbed her arm, silencing her.
The photographer clicked. Clicked. Clicked.
And then Lucia went rigid, her spine arching, her body bowing against Andres's chest, and a sound came out of her that was not a performance. It was raw, animal, torn from somewhere deep. Her hands fisted in the water, scattering rose petals, and Andres's face was buried in her neck, his shoulders shaking.
The shutter stopped.
The silence that followed was absolute.
Elena broke it, her voice calm and professional. "Beautiful. That's a wrap. Lucia, Andres, you were magnificent."
Andres laughed softly, and I heard him murmur something against Lucia's ear. She didn't laugh. She sat up slowly, the water streaming off her breasts, and her eyes found mine across the loft. In them, I saw something unguarded and raw, a flicker of the woman I'd caught glimpses of all my life, the one she buried beneath silk and composure.
Then she looked away, and the mask was back, smooth and untouchable, as she stepped out of the tub and reached for her robe.
I stood there, breathless, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my teeth. The question screamed inside my skull: did they just fuck in that tub, or was it all an act?
I didn't know.
And I was terrified that I'd never be able to look at her the same way again.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, Marco's name flashing across the screen, and I fumbled to answer while Lucia's gaze tracked me from across the loft. His voice crackled through, asking how the shoot was going, and I forced a laugh, watching her wrap the robe tighter, the words "fine" and "all good" tasting like ash while the image of her arching in the water burned behind my eyes. I ended the call with a mumbled promise to text him later, shoving the phone back into my pocket. Lucia was still watching me, her fingers absently toying with the knot of her robe. She said something to Andres, something low that made him nod and turn away.
I watched him walk away, the line of his back broad and unbothered, as if the last hour had been nothing. For him, it probably was. A job. A body performing a function. But the image of Lucia's spine bowing in that copper tub, the raw sound that had torn from her throat, was seared into me like a brand.
Denise appeared at my elbow, clipboard pressed to her chest. "You can wait in the lounge if you want. There's coffee, water. Lucia will need a few minutes to change."
"Thanks," I managed, my voice rougher than I intended.
She led me through a side door into a small, utilitarian room with a worn leather couch, a rickety table, and a coffee machine that gurgled and hissed in the corner. I didn't sit. I paced. The blood was still thrumming in my veins, my pulse a dull roar in my ears. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her. The water sluicing off her skin. The muscle in her thigh clenching. Andres's hand vanishing beneath the surface.
My cock was still half-hard against my jeans, a stubborn, aching reminder of what I'd just witnessed. I adjusted myself, grimacing, and poured a cup of coffee I didn't drink just to have something to do with my hands. The sound of my own breathing was too loud in the small room, too ragged. I couldn't shake the image of her, the way she'd arched against Andres's touch, that perfect, helpless curve of her spine. My mind kept replaying it, over and over, each time more vivid than the last.
I wanted to punch something, or maybe punch myself for being such a fucking perv, watching her like that. But goddamn it, I couldn't help it. She wasn't just my friend's mom anymore; she was something else now. Something dangerous and beautiful and fucking magnetic. My knuckles went white where I gripped the coffee mug.
The studio door creaked open and there she was, framed in the doorway, her dress clinging to her curves in ways that made my mouth water. "Shall we leave?" she asked, her voice low and steady, her eyes meeting mine without a hint of the knowing glint I'd imagined. I swallowed hard, the question hanging between us. "Yeah, let's get out of here," I managed, my voice rougher than I intended as I turned toward the exit.
We walked out through the narrow corridor, past the hum of the studio lights and the lingering scent of ozone and rose water. Denise called out a cheerful goodbye from the monitoring station, and I lifted a hand in a wave without fully looking back. I couldn't look back. Every step toward the steel door felt like escaping a dream that I wasn't sure I wanted to wake from.
The afternoon air hit me like a splash of cold water, sharp and clean after the thick, perfumed atmosphere of the studio. Lucia walked ahead of me, her heels clicking against the concrete, her posture straight and regal. I unlocked the car and opened her door again, and this time when she slid in, I caught a glimpse of her thigh as the dress rode up just slightly. I forced my eyes away and walked around to the driver's side, my palms sweating against the steering wheel.
The engine turned over with a low rumble. I pulled away from the curb, merging into the sparse afternoon traffic. The silence stretched between us, heavy and expectant, like a held breath. I could feel her presence beside me, the weight of her gaze as she studied my profile. I kept my eyes fixed on the road, watching the graffiti-scarred walls of the art district give way to older residential streets.
"That was quite a morning," I said finally, keeping my voice light.
Lucia let out a soft laugh, the sound tinged with something I couldn't quite name. "Quite a morning. That's one way to put it."
I glanced at her. She was looking out her window, her chin resting on her hand, her dark bob brushing her jawline. The pendant at her throat caught the light, glinting gold against her skin. She looked beautiful and unapproachable and completely exhausted, all at once.
"Can I ask you something?" I said.
"You just did." A small smile curved her lips. "But go ahead."
I hesitated, gripping the wheel tighter. "That whole thing. The shoot. Is it always like that?"
"Always like what?"
"Like..." I searched for the words. "Like it's real. Like you're actually feeling it."
Lucia was quiet for a long moment. The only sound was the hum of the tires and the muted radio playing something soft and forgettable. When she spoke, her voice was lower, more careful.
"Sometimes it is real. Not the specific... not the man. But the feeling. The tension. Elena is good at creating scenarios that pull something out of you, even when you don't want to give it. She knows how to find the spot where your mask slips, just for a second, and she captures it."
"Looked like more than a second in that tub."
The words escaped before I could stop them, raw and unguarded. Lucia's breath caught. She shifted in her seat, turning to face me more fully, and I saw her jaw tighten before she smoothed her expression.
"You were watching closely."
"I couldn't help it. You were..." I stopped, my throat suddenly dry. "I've never seen you like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you forgot where you were. Who was watching."
The silence that followed was thick enough to choke on. Lucia turned back to the window, and I focused on the road, my knuckles white against the steering wheel even though I was going well under the speed limit.
"That's my job, Tomas," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "To make people believe. To sell the fantasy. It doesn't mean anything beyond the frame."
"Doesn't it?"
She didn't answer. The quiet stretched on, and I felt my pulse hammering in my throat, the memory of her spine arching in that copper tub playing behind my eyes in a relentless loop. The sound she'd made. The way her body had moved against Andres. The way her hand had disappeared beneath the water.
I pulled onto her street, the familiar pale-yellow siding of her colonial coming into view. I slowed to a stop in her driveway, the engine idling softly. Neither of us moved for a moment.
Lucia unclipped her seatbelt but didn't open the door. She sat there, her hands folded in her lap, her eyes fixed on the dashboard.
"I wasn't expecting you to stay," she said quietly. "When Marco said he was sending someone, I thought it would be one of his other friends. The one with the truck. I didn't think it would be you."
"Is that a bad thing?"
She lifted her gaze to meet mine, and for a moment, I saw something flicker in her hazel eyes. Uncertainty, maybe. Or curiosity.
"No," she said softly. "Not bad. Just... unexpected."
I killed the engine. The silence rushed in around us, intimate and heavy. I turned to face her properly, one arm resting on the steering wheel, the other on the center console.
"Lucia."
She stiffened at the sound of her name on my lips. I'd called her Señora Serrano when I was a kid, then just Lucia when Marco insisted, but she'd never been just Lucia to me. She'd always been something more, something golden and out of reach.
"I know it was a job," I said carefully. "I know none of that was mine to watch. But I want you to know that whatever I saw today, it doesn't change how I think about you. It just made me realize that I've been thinking about you for a lot longer than I let myself admit."
Her lips parted. A faint flush crept up her neck, visible even in the dim light of the car. She looked at me searchingly, her eyes tracing my face like she was trying to find the boy she remembered in the man sitting beside her.
"Tomas," she began, and then stopped. She shook her head, a small, bemused sound escaping her. "You're Marco's best friend. You're young enough to be my son."
"I know."
"And I'm forty. And I have history with you. You used to steal cookies from my kitchen."
"I remember," I said, a smile tugging at my mouth. "They were chocolate chip. Your secret ingredient was a pinch of sea salt on top."
A reluctant laugh escaped her, and she pressed a hand to her mouth, as if surprised by the sound. "You remember that?"
"I remember everything about that house. About you." I paused, letting the weight of the words settle. "You're not just Marco's mom to me anymore, Lucia. Maybe you never were."
She was quiet for a long moment, her hand still pressed against her lips, her eyes searching mine. Then she lowered her hand, and a different expression crossed her face, softer, more vulnerable than I'd ever seen her.
"Elena mentioned another shoot next week," she said, and the shift in topic caught me off guard. "At a lake house. Some kind of exclusive retreat property the client has. It's a two-day shoot, including travel. Remote. No crew from this city, just Elena and a small team. I haven't decided if I'm doing it yet."
"Why wouldn't you?"
She hesitated, toying with the pendant at her throat. "Because I'd have to drive up there alone. And whatever the concept is, Elena hinted it's darker than today. More intimate." Her eyes met mine, and there was something almost uncertain in them. "I don't know if I have it in me to go through that again, without a familiar face nearby."
My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my fingertips. "You'd have a familiar face," I said. "If you want one."
"Marco can't—"
"Not Marco." I leaned in slightly, my voice low and steady. "Me. I could drive you. Stay with you. Only if you want me to."
Lucia stared at me, and I saw the war playing out behind her eyes. The professional, the mother, the woman who had spent twenty years curating an image of untouchable elegance, wrestling with something she'd buried deep. I could see her looking for a reason to say no, a sensible reason that would make this moment disappear into the comfortable distance we'd always kept.
She didn't find one.
"You'd do that?" she asked softly. "Drive up to some remote lake house and watch me work? Deal with the awkwardness of Elena and Denise treating you like a hired driver again?"
"If it means I get to be near you, yeah. I'd do it."
The words hung in the air between us, honest and unflinching. Lucia's breath caught, her chest rising and falling a little faster beneath the silk of her dress. For a long, suspended moment, I thought she might reach for me. Her hand twitched in her lap.
Then she smiled, a small, wondering curve of her lips, and reached for the door handle.
"Alright," she said. "I'll think about it. The lake house. The shoot. You coming along."
"That's not a yes," I said, trying to keep the hope out of my voice and failing.
"It's not a no," she replied, and the warmth in her gaze made my chest ache.
She stepped out of the car, and I followed her, walking her up the path to her front door. The evening light was golden and soft against the pale-yellow siding, casting long shadows across the lawn. She paused at the door, key in hand, and turned to face me.
"Thank you, Tomas," she said. "For today. For the ride. For..." She gestured vaguely, encompassing everything. "For seeing me."
"Thank you for letting me see."
Something passed between us, electric and undeniable, before she turned and unlocked the door, stepping into the dim coolness of her house. She looked back once, a silhouette against the fading light, before the door closed gently, leaving me standing on her porch with my heart racing and my mind spinning.
I walked back to the car and got in, sitting in the driver's seat for a long moment. The seat still smelled like her perfume, floral and dark, with that undercurrent of vanilla that had been haunting me since seven AM. I let out a long breath, running my hand over my close-cropped hair.
She hadn't said yes. But she hadn't said no.
And that, I realized, was more than I'd ever hoped for.
I started the engine and pulled out of her driveway, the lake house and the two days of travel and the dark, intimate concept Elena had hinted at all swirling in my head like a promise I was terrified to believe in. But I'd ask again. I'd make sure she knew I meant it. And if she said yes, I'd be waiting, ready to drive her wherever she needed to go.
Even if the whole trip felt like stepping off a cliff and hoping someone would catch me.
