Chapter 34: Victory's Reward

The weight of the warhammer was a ghost in his palm long after he set it on its stand. It lingered in the tendons of his forearm, a phantom tension as Kerr moved through the dim royal apartments. The scent of blood and anger had been scrubbed from his skin in the bath, replaced by the plain, clean smell of soap and the lingering warmth of steam.

He found Anora already abed, a silhouette of silver-blonde hair against the dark linens. She lay on her side, one hand curled under her cheek, the other resting on the pronounced swell of her stomach. The fire had burned low in the hearth, casting the room in a wash of amber and deep shadow. The gilded tapestries, with their soaring dragons and proud mabari, were now just shapes in the gloom. That single, unlit candle on the mantel stood sentinel.

He watched her for a moment from the doorway. The steady, deep rhythm of her sleep was a counterpoint to the frantic drum of his own heart. In sleep, the sharp, calculating lines of her face softened. The Queen was away on other business, and all that remained was the woman – his wife, carrying their child, exhausted by the endless calculus of statecraft and survival.

He moved quietly, shedding his loose trousers and tunic. The cool air kissed his skin. Sliding under the heavy covers, he felt the welcome warmth of her body. He shifted close, molding himself against the curve of her back, his chest to her shoulders, his knees bending to cradle hers. He was a fortress around her.

The scent of her sleep-warmed skin, of lavender and something uniquely Anora, filled his senses. It was a clean, intoxicating smell, entirely separate from the day’s violence. His hand settled over hers on her belly. He felt the hard, round curve, the outward push of her navel against his palm. A fierce, almost painful tenderness swelled in his chest, so potent it blurred his vision for a second.

And with it, an answering, physical ache.

His body, tired as it was, responded to her nearness, to the softness pressed against him, to the profound intimacy of her trust in this vulnerable state. His cock, already half-hard from the simple comfort of holding her, thickened fully, a heavy heat against the cleft of her buttocks.

Anora murmured something unintelligible, a sleep-slurred syllable, and pushed back slightly into his warmth.

The movement was his undoing.

He was careful, so careful, as he guided himself. He used the slickness of his own arousal, his hand between them to position the broad, blunted head of him against her entrance. She was wet even in sleep, her body knowing his. He pushed in slowly, a smooth, relentless invasion that made her breath catch in a soft, waking sigh.

"Kerr…?" Her voice was thick, disoriented.

"Shhh," he breathed into her hair, his arm wrapping tighter around her, his hand splaying across her belly as he seated himself fully inside her with a gentle, final rock of his hips. "Just sleep. I've got you."

And she did, or seemed to, her body accepting him completely, adjusting to the deep, filling stretch. He began to move, a languid, rocking rhythm dictated by the slow tide of his own need. It wasn't frantic. It was possessive, devotional. Each slow retreat and gentle, deep push was a reclamation, a silent promise spoken in the language of the flesh.

Her breathing changed. It hitched, then deepened. A soft moan escaped her lips, her head tipping back against his shoulder. She was awake now, but swimming in the liminal space between sleep and pleasure, letting him steer. Her hand came up to clutch at the arm banded across her chest, her fingers digging in.

He felt her inner muscles begin to flutter, then tighten. The first orgasm took her quietly, a trembling wave that rolled through her from her core outward, a stifled cry against the pillow. He kept his pace steady, unrelenting, through the shudders.

Before the last tremor had even faded, he felt the coiling tension begin again within her. His name was a gasp on her lips. The second peak was sharper, brighter; her back arched, her hips pushing back against him to take him even deeper. A broken sound, half-sob, tore from her throat.

"Again," he murmured into the shell of her ear, not a command but an observation, a prophecy he was intent on fulfilling.

He angled his hips slightly, changing the pressure, finding a spot that made her cry out sharply, her nails biting into his forearm. The third climax was a convulsion, a beautiful, wrenching storm that left her panting and slack against him, utterly spent.

Only then did he allow his own control to fracture. The sight of her, the feel of her, the smell of her – it overwhelmed the last of his restraint. His rhythm broke, becoming shorter, harder thrusts. A guttural sound was wrenched from his chest, lost in the tumble of her hair. He buried himself to the hilt and held there as his release tore through him, a blinding, grounding rush that seemed to pour all the day's darkness out of him and into her welcoming warmth.

For a long time, the only sounds were the crackle of the dying fire and their slowing breaths. He softened inside her, but didn't withdraw, unwilling to break the connection. He kissed the damp nape of her neck.

"You're my peace," she whispered, her voice raw with sleep and satisfaction.

He had no words adequate for the magnitude of that. He just held her tighter, his hand spread protectively over the child they had made, and finally let the quiet of the room claim him.
