Chapter 11: Suiting Up
The vibrant red, white, and blue Wonder Woman costume lay pooled in Chloe’s lap like spilled paint. Across from her, kneeling on the worn dorm rug amidst discarded textbooks and Natalie’s fuzzy slippers, James held the Superman suit. The blue material shimmered dully under the string of fairy lights, the red cape spilling onto the floor like coagulated blood. The original black suit still hung on the bathroom door, its low, violet thrum a constant, unsettling bass note beneath the more immediate tension.
Natalie’s off-key singing from the shower was muffled, a bizarrely mundane soundtrack to the surreal horror unfolding in the bedroom.
James stared at the suit in his hands, his expression a tight mask of disbelief and dawning dread. The blue latex felt unnaturally cool, almost slippery, against his fingers. “Both of us,” he muttered, his voice rough. “It wants both of us.”
Chloe’s knuckles were white where she gripped the golden lasso. The material hummed faintly against her palm, a vibration distinct from the black suit’s deeper thrum. “I didn’t order it,” she repeated, a desperate edge in her whisper. “I swear, James. I just opened the box.” She glanced wildly at the bathroom door, then back to the vibrant costume in her lap. It felt predatory.
James blew out a long breath, his gaze shifting from the suit to Chloe’s terrified face. The determination she’d seen in him before, the solidity she’d clung to in the steamy aftermath, hardened in his eyes. “Okay,” he said, his voice low and deliberate. “Okay. If it wants a show, maybe we give it one. On our terms.”
Her eyes widened. “What?”
He stood up, the Superman suit held loosely in one hand. He looked down at his jeans and t-shirt, then at the suit. “We put them on. Right here. Right now.” He met her gaze, his jaw set. “We see what happens. What it wants to happen. Better to know, right? Before it… surprises us again.”
The logic was terrifying, but it cut through Chloe’s panic. Knowledge was power, even poisoned knowledge. Especially poisoned knowledge. She nodded, a jerky movement. “Okay. Yeah. Okay.”
James didn’t hesitate. He pulled his worn t-shirt over his head in one swift motion, revealing the familiar planes of his chest and shoulders, the faded basketball tattoo stark against his skin. He kicked off his sneakers, then unbuckled his belt. Chloe watched, her breath catching. This wasn't like the shower, shrouded in steam and shared exhaustion. This was deliberate. Exposed. The fairy lights seemed suddenly too bright.
He stepped out of his jeans and boxers, standing naked in the center of the cluttered room. He held the Superman suit up. The blue torso gleamed, the red briefs attached, the cape hanging heavy. Taking another deep breath, James stepped into the legs.
The effect was instantaneous. The material didn't just cling; it flowed. It slithered up his calves, over his knees and thighs with an unnerving, liquid grace, molding itself to every contour, every muscle fiber, tightening and smoothing as it rose. It wasn't passive fabric; it was an entity actively claiming territory. Chloe watched, mesmerized and horrified, as the blue latex enveloped his hips, the red briefs settling perfectly, almost defiantly, over his groin. A soft, low hum, different from the black suit’s thrum – higher pitched, more resonant – began to emanate from the blue material, vibrating faintly in the air.
James gasped. His eyes snapped shut for a second, his body tensing. “Whoa. Cold. Then… not.” His voice was tight. He pulled the suit up over his abdomen, the blue material stretching taut across his defined stomach, the crest of the ‘S’ shield settling just below his pectorals. It seemed to pulse faintly, a deep blue light emanating from within the emblem itself. He worked his arms into the sleeves. The latex flowed over his biceps, triceps, the material amplifying the power in his shoulders, thickening his arms subtly but undeniably. It was like watching him sculpted into an impossible, living statue.
He pulled the high collar into place. The final piece was the cape. He lifted it, the heavy latex draping over his shoulders. As it settled, the entire suit seemed to activate. The blue glow from the ‘S’ shield brightened, casting sharp highlights and deep shadows on his face. The hum deepened, harmonizing strangely with the black suit’s persistent thrum from the bathroom door. James stood straighter, impossibly taller, his posture radiating an unfamiliar, almost alien confidence. Power hummed around him. Not just physical strength – something deeper, more resonant. The cape didn’t just hang; it seemed to possess a subtle weight and presence of its own, shifting minutely even in the still air of the room.
Chloe couldn’t look away. Her mouth was slightly open, her heart hammering against her ribs. He was James – the guy from down the hall, the basketball player, the friend she’d secretly crushed on. But he was also… more. Amplified. Enhanced. Transformed by the shimmering blue latex that clung to him like a second, sentient skin. The shyness she usually felt around him evaporated, replaced by pure, visceral awe and a terrifying thrill. He looked… godlike. And dangerous. The suit hummed its approval.
James turned his head, his eyes meeting hers. They seemed brighter, sharper. The usual warmth was still there, but overlaid with an unnerving intensity, a focus that pinned her in place. He took a step towards her, the movement smooth, powerful, utterly unlike his usual lanky gait. The cape swirled dramatically behind him, the heavy latex whispering against itself. He stopped a foot away, the blue glow of the ‘S’ shield illuminating her face. The hum vibrated through the floorboards, up into Chloe’s bare feet where she still sat on the floor.
“Your turn,” he said. His voice was lower, richer. Less James, more… Superman. Commanding. It wasn’t a question.
The bathroom door swung open. Natalie emerged in a cloud of steam, wrapped in a fluffy pink towel, rubbing her hair with another. Her cheery expression froze as she took in the scene: James, towering and resplendent in the glowing Superman suit, radiating power; Chloe on the floor, clutching the Wonder Woman costume, looking utterly shell-shocked; and the vibrant red, white, and blue material contrasting violently with the room's cozy clutter and the ominous black suit still pulsing violet on the door.
Natalie’s eyes widened to saucers. Her mouth formed a perfect ‘O’. The damp towel slipped from her hair, landing with a soft plop on the floor.
“Holy. Shit. Balls.” The words came out breathless, devoid of her usual teasing inflection. Pure, unadulterated shock. She stared at James, then at Chloe, then back at James. “What the actual…?” Her gaze darted to the black suit on the door, its violet pulse seeming to quicken in response to her presence and the new suit’s activation. “Is this… cosplay? Did I miss a memo? Because that,” she pointed a trembling finger at James, “is some serious next-level commitment, McGuinn. And Chloe…” She trailed off, finally noticing the raw fear warring with fascination on her roommate’s face. “Chloe? Are you okay?”
James didn’t turn. His gaze remained locked on Chloe, the blue light from his chest casting long, dramatic shadows across the room. The hum intensified, pressing against Chloe’s eardrums. He took another step closer, looming over her. The command in his amplified voice was undeniable, stripping away Natalie’s interruption, pulling Chloe back into the terrifying, electric moment.
“Put it on, Chloe.”
The command hung in the air, thick as the lingering steam from Natalie’s shower. James stood transformed, the blue suit humming with latent power, amplifying his presence until the cramped dorm room felt suffocating. Chloe stared up at him, the vibrant Wonder Woman costume heavy in her hands, the gold lasso coiled like a sleeping serpent.
Natalie, towel clutched tight, gaped. "Seriously, what fresh hell is this? McGuinn, did you raid a movie set? That suit looks... alive." Her eyes darted between James’s unnerving stillness and Chloe’s pale face. "Chloe, honey, you look like you saw a ghost. Or made one. What’s going on?"
Chloe couldn’t tear her eyes from James, from the intense blue light pulsing from the 'S' shield. The suit's hum vibrated in her teeth, resonant and demanding. "It’s… complicated, Nat," she managed, her voice thin. "Just… cosplay. Experimental."
Natalie snorted, skepticism etched on her damp face. "Experimental? Looks like he’s channeling Krypton in my bedroom! And is that the original creepy suit still doing its heartbeat thing on the door?" She shivered dramatically. "This room needs an exorcist, not a costume change." She shook her head, grabbing clothes from her drawer. "Okay, weirdos, mystery later. I gotta bolt for practice." She pulled on leggings and a hoodie with brisk efficiency.
Then she paused, snapping her fingers. "Oh! Almost forgot! The Comic Con at the Convention Center is this weekend." She beamed, the weirdness momentarily forgotten in her excitement. "When I get back from practice, how about the three of us go? Chloe, can I try your Catwoman suit? The black one, not the… whatever that is." She gestured vaguely at the Wonder Woman bundle.
Chloe’s gaze flickered to the original black suit, still pulsing violet on the door hook, then back to Natalie’s expectant face. A spark of normalcy, a lifeline. "Yes," Chloe said quickly, forcing a small smile. Relief warred with dread. "I’ll clean it before you’re back. I’ll also help you put it on—it’s really tight." She hesitated, the word sticking. "You’ll need some lube… uh… dressing aid."
Natalie burst out laughing, the sound bright and jarring against the room’s heavy atmosphere. "You said lube! Hahahaha! Oh man, Chloe, you’re the best!" Still chuckling, she grabbed her gym bag and headed out the door, calling over her shoulder, "Don’t do anything too weird while I’m gone! Try not to break the building, Superman!"
The door clicked shut behind her, sealing Chloe and James back into the humming silence. The abrupt shift from Natalie’s cheerful chaos to the amplified tension was jarring. The Superman suit’s resonant thrum and the black suit’s deeper violet pulse vibrated the air like dissonant chords. James hadn’t moved, his enhanced physique radiating contained energy, his amplified gaze fixed on her. The command lingered.
Chloe took a shaky breath, the scent of new latex sharp in her nose. She pushed herself up from the floor, the Wonder Woman costume clutched like a shield. The golden lasso felt unnervingly warm. She walked stiffly to the door, turned the lock with a decisive click. The sound echoed.
She faced James, the bottle of slippery dressing aid cold and heavy in her other hand. His eyes tracked her every movement, the blue glow reflecting in her own wide pupils. The hum from his suit seemed to intensify, a low thrumming pressure against her skin. It felt like a dare.
"I guess it’s my turn," Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible over the suits' combined resonance. She held up the gleaming red, white, and blue bundle and the bottle. The lasso’s coils shifted slightly, catching the fairy lights. James merely inclined his head, a silent, powerful acknowledgment. The air crackled. She stepped towards the center of the room, under the canopy of plastic stars, preparing to surrender to the suit’s embrace. The door lock felt flimsy against the humming pressure now contained within.
The lock clicked shut, a fragile barrier against the thick hum now vibrating the floorboards. Chloe stood frozen for a second, the bright Wonder Woman costume a heavy weight in her hands, the bottle of slippery dressing aid cool against her palm. James remained a statue of shimmering blue latex, his ‘S’ shield pulsing, the cape hanging impossibly still.
Her heart hammered, a frantic drum against her ribs. It wasn't just fear anymore. Seeing James transformed, radiating that impossible power, ignited a spark deep inside her – a terrifying, thrilling curiosity. What would it feel like? That suit had reshaped him, amplified him. What would it do to her?
She took a breath that shuddered on the way in. "Okay," she whispered, more to herself than him. Setting the costume carefully on her desk chair, the golden lasso gleaming, she turned to face James fully. His amplified gaze tracked her every movement, intense and unblinking. She reached for the hem of her borrowed t-shirt, the soft cotton suddenly feeling like a shield she desperately needed and couldn't wait to shed.
She pulled the shirt up and over her head in one quick motion, tossing it aside. The cool dorm air prickled her bare skin, instantly raising goosebumps. She kept her eyes fixed somewhere near his collarbone, the blue glow of his suit illuminating her flushed skin. Her fingers fumbled with the button of her borrowed sweatpants, then slid them down her legs, stepping out of them. She stood there, in just her simple cotton underwear, feeling impossibly exposed under his laser-focused gaze and the humming pressure of the suits.
Chloe’s excitement and anticipation increased as she took off her clothes in front of James. The shyness usually crippling around him was burned away by the raw intensity of the situation, replaced by a trembling eagerness mixed with deep apprehension. She unscrewed the cap of the bottle, the clear, viscous fluid inside catching the fairy lights. "Guess I need the... lube... uh... dressing aid," she mumbled, her cheeks flaming crimson. She poured a generous amount into her palm.
James giggled, the sound unexpectedly boyish and warm, cutting through the suit’s resonant thrum. “That was funny, Chloe,” he said, his amplified voice softening into something closer to his familiar tone. A hint of the James she knew surfaced beneath the Superman veneer. “You’re really cute.” He walked over, the blue suit flowing with each powerful stride, the cape whispering behind him. He stopped right before her, the hum from his chest vibrating the air between them. He leaned down and gave her a quick, gentle kiss on the lips.
“Time to get ready, Wonder Woman,” James said, pulling back. His eyes, still sharpened by the suit’s influence, held a mix of command and tenderness that made her shiver. He nodded towards the costume.
The kiss lingered on her lips, a spark of normalcy amidst the surreal. Chloe dipped her fingers into the slippery liquid in her hand. Taking a deep breath, she began applying it to her arms, her shoulders. The dressing aid felt cool and slick, a stark contrast to the heat flushing her skin. She worked methodically down her torso, over her stomach, coating her legs. The sensation was clinical yet intimate, heightened by James watching her every move, the blue light from his chest washing over her skin.
Finally, she hooked her thumbs into the waistband of her underwear and slid them down. Naked now, she quickly scooped up more dressing aid, applying it thoroughly, ensuring every inch was covered. The air felt charged, electric, crackling with the suits’ combined hum and her own heightened awareness. She reached for the red, white, and blue bundle.
She shook out the Wonder Woman suit, the material gleaming under the lights. The bodice was structured, the star-spangled briefs attached. Stepping into the legs, she gasped as the cool latex touched her slick skin. It clung instantly, flowing up her calves and thighs with that same unnerving, liquid grace James’s suit had displayed. It molded itself to her, tightening, smoothing, amplifying the curve of her hips, the slender line of her waist. The sensation was profoundly alien – cool, then warm, then a deep, resonant vibration beginning deep within the material itself, harmonizing with James’s hum and the black suit’s persistent thrum.
She pulled the suit up over her abdomen, the structured bodice cinching her waist, lifting her breasts. The material flowed over her arms, the white star patterns gleaming on the deep blue sleeves. She settled the high collar around her neck. Instinctively, she reached for the golden tiara and placed it on her head. The final touch was the lasso. As her fingers closed around the thick, braided gold coils, a jolt shot through her arm.
Power. Not just amplified strength, but something else. A thrumming certainty, a fierce clarity that pushed the last remnants of her shyness aside. Her spine straightened. She felt taller, stronger, her senses sharpening. The humming wasn’t just around her; it was in her, vibrating in her bones, humming through her blood. She met James’s gaze, and this time, she didn't look away. Her eyes, dark and intense, held his amplified stare. The red, gold, and blue seemed to glow from within, the suit settling on her petite frame with impossible, formidable grace. Wonder Woman stood in the cluttered dorm room.
James’s expression shifted, a flicker of awe mingling with the suit’s intensity. "Wow, Chloe," he breathed, the hum deepening. The black suit on the door pulsed violently violet, then settled into a faster, almost agitated rhythm. The two heroes faced each other, power humming between them, a connection amplified and distorted by the alien material encasing them. The air thickened, charged with potential energy, barely contained.
The sudden, loud jangle of keys and the rattle of the doorknob broke the charged silence. "Yo! Still decent in there?" Natalie's voice, bright and booming, came through the door followed by the sound of the key scraping in the lock. "Forgot my water bottle! Practice is gonna suck without it!" The lock clicked open. The door began to swing inward. Chloe and James froze, transformed, powerful, and utterly exposed. The suits hummed louder, a warning or a welcome, vibrating the very air Natalie was about to breach.
