Chapter 2: The Unveiling of Family Ties

The porch light haloed the two newcomers, casting long, distorted shadows across the threshold. Ritchie stood frozen, the cheap polyester of his Joker vest suddenly itchy against his skin, the lingering warmth of Chyene’s gloved hand on his trousers replaced by a cold dread. Two more. Identical masks, identical wigs, identical costumes straining over bodies that were terrifyingly familiar beneath the latex and synthetic hair.

Before he could choke out a syllable, Ellie was there, pushing past him with a delighted squeal that cut through the party noise. "Mom! Margaret!" Her masked face beamed beneath the edge of the black silk, her own Harley Quinn costume brushing against theirs in a jarring tangle of blue-and-pink hair and straining cleavage. "I knew you’d show up to steal my thunder!" She threw her arms around Evelyn first, then Margaret, the embrace awkward amidst the rigid corsets and stiff tutus. "Look at you both! Harley Quinns! Who would've thought?"

Evelyn, Ritchie’s mother, chuckled, a low, throaty sound that vibrated beneath her mask. Her gloved hand patted Ellie’s back possessively, but her masked gaze remained fixed on Ritchie, sharp and assessing. "Well, darling," she purred, her cartoon Brooklyn accent slipping slightly to reveal the cultured undertone Ritchie knew all too well, "couldn't let you have all the fun, could we? Especially with Mistah J lookin' so… delectable tonight." Her eyes, visible through the mask’s slits, raked him up and down with undisguised appreciation, lingering pointedly low. Ritchie felt his face burn.

Margaret, Ellie’s mother, stepped forward, her taller frame radiating a powerful, earthy confidence. Her laugh was louder, more robust. "Delectable is right, Evie!" she boomed, her own Brooklyn accent thicker, more practiced. Her gaze, equally intense behind the mask, swept over Ritchie with a frankness that bordered on predatory. "Look at the size of him! Fills out that silly costume somethin' fierce, doesn't he?" She reached out, not touching him, but her gesture encompassed his entire frame, lingering suggestively on his hips. "Always knew our Ritchie was a big, strong boy." The phrase "big, strong boy" landed with a thud, loaded with implications that made Ritchie’s stomach clench.

Ellie giggled, a bright, musical sound that somehow felt rehearsed. "Oh, stop, you two! You're gonna make him blush!" She linked arms with Margaret, pulling her further inside. "Come on, the party's wild! Ritchie’s punch is… potent." She shot Ritchie a look through the mask slits, a quick flash of something unreadable excitement? Warning? before turning her attention back to Evelyn. "Mom, you have to try it. Ritchie makes it special."
