Chapter 1: The Dealer's Shadow in the Hallway
The motel clerk barely looked up from his phone when Jimmy walked in. A fluorescent tube buzzed overhead, humming its failing note against the stained ceiling tiles. Behind the scratched plastic shield of the front desk, the man wore a faded polo shirt and the expression of someone who had long stopped being surprised by anything.
"I got a reservation," Jimmy said. "Under Sera."
The clerk's thumb paused mid-scroll. He lifted his head and let his gaze travel over Jimmy slowly, from the sneakers to the windbreaker to the nervous grip he had on his wallet. A thin smile pulled at the corner of his mouth.
"You're a new one, huh?"
Jimmy shifted his weight. "First time, yeah."
The clerk set his phone down and leaned on the counter. His voice dropped, friendly in the way of someone sharing an open secret.
"Honey, you do know what she does, right? I mean, you looked at the ad. You know she ain't taking you to the prom."
"I know what she does."
"See, that's the thing." The clerk clicked his tongue. "Most of her regulars, they know her setup. They come in with friends. A couple of her boys are already up in the parking lot, waiting on her. The room's their little party spot. You sure you got the right room, kid? Or the right girl?"
Jimmy's throat went dry. He had read the online ads, clicked through the photos, the ones that made his pulse hammer in his ears. But he hadn't read anything about friends.
"The room's under her name," he said.
"Room twelve." The clerk slid a key card across the counter, then let his fingers tap against it, holding it in place. "If it gets too crowded in there, don't say I didn't warn you. She brings her whole neighborhood sometimes. I seen her walk in with four, five of them before. You want me to keep the front desk on speed dial, or you got it handled?"
Jimmy took the card. "I got it handled."
He walked down the hallway with the key burning in his palm. The corridor stank of damp carpet and old cigarette smoke trapped in the wallpaper. One of the yellow bulbs flickered at the far end, stuttering light across a vending machine that had been gutted of its contents. He stopped outside room twelve and leaned against the wall, trying to slow his breathing.
Footsteps echoed from the entrance. Several sets of them. Heavy boots, the drag of a woman's heels, low voices laughing.
Jimmy straightened up.
Sera came around the corner first. She moved through the dim light like she owned it. The open blue leather jacket swung as she walked, and beneath it her red bra cut low over the curve of her breasts. The short skirt left most of her thighs bare above the blue stockings. Her makeup was heavy, the purple eyeshadow catching the flicker, her blonde waves brushing her bare shoulders. She was laughing at something one of the men behind her had said, her head tilted back, her throat open.
Then Jimmy saw the rest of them. Three Black men, large and broad-shouldered in the half-dark. They walked loose, unhurried, the way men walk when they know a space belongs to them. The one in front wore a matte-black bomber jacket over a grey tank top that strained across his chest. His gold chain caught the light. The other two hung back, hands in their pockets, grinning.
Sera spotted Jimmy and her whole face shifted. The easy laugh became something softer, a slow smile that reached her eyes. She broke away from the men and came toward him, her boots clicking on the worn carpet.
"Well, look at you, all dressed up and early." She stopped close, close enough for him to smell her perfume, something sweet and heavy over the motel air. She reached out and touched the collar of his windbreaker, straightening it. "You been waiting long, baby?"
"No, I just got here."
"You nervous?" Her fingers trailed down his chest, light, teasing. "You got that look, like a boy about to sit his exams. Don't worry. I'm gonna take real good care of you once I get rid of these troublemakers here."
She glanced back at the men. The one in the bomber jacket laughed, low and easy.
The man stepped forward, casual, and put a large hand on Sera's hip. She leaned back into him without missing a beat. He looked Jimmy up and down, slow, the way you size up a new piece of furniture.
"I'm Vance," he said. "I'm her VIP. You hear me? Everything in that room starts with me."
He squeezed her hip hard enough to make her arch her back. Sera let out a little hum and tilted her head, a coy, practiced motion.
"Don't mind him," she said to Jimmy, but her hand was already sliding back to rest on Vance's forearm, stroking it. "He's always like this. He just likes to make sure everybody knows where they stand."
Vance's other hand dropped lower, palming the curve of her ass through the short skirt. She laughed, not moving away.
"We got business first," he said to her, his voice unhurried. "Then you can have your fun with the kid." He turned to Jimmy and held up the key card that was already in his hand. "Keep the hallway warm, alright? Don't go anywhere. She likes a crowd."
He unlocked the door. Sera looked back over her shoulder at Jimmy, her heavy-lidded eyes catching him, her tongue tracing the edge of her lower lip.
"Just a little while," she said. "Then I'm all yours, baby. Promise."
She let herself be pulled inside. Vance followed, and the other two men filed past Jimmy close enough that one of them brushed his shoulder. The door clicked shut behind them.
Jimmy stood in the empty hallway, listening to the muffled laughter and the shifting of weight through the thin walls. He pressed his back against the peeling wallpaper and waited.
The door clicked shut, and the corridor went quiet for a second. Then the first sound came through the thin wall, a low laugh that rolled into a woman's giggle. Jimmy's hands stayed flat against the wallpaper beside him. He told himself to wait, just wait, she said a little while.
The laughter pitched up, then dropped into something throatier. A man's voice rumbled, words he couldn't catch. Then a woman's gasp, and the tinny, rhythmic moaning of a porn film bleeding through the drywall.
Jimmy pushed off the wall before he could think about it. He stepped to the door of room twelve and pressed his ear to the cool wood. The muffled sounds separated. Vance's chuckle, low and slow. Sera's laugh, bright, unbothered. A glass clinking. The porn kept playing underneath, a woman's voice building in that practiced, hollow way.
Then the bedsprings groaned once, twice, in a slow rhythm.
Jimmy's face went hot. He stepped back. His sneaker scuffed the carpet and he froze, listening. Inside, someone said something and the room laughed. He stayed still a long moment, then turned and walked down the corridor.
The hallway bent past a fire extinguisher with a broken gauge and a stack of folded towels that had been sitting there long enough to collect dust. He tried the first door he came to. Locked. The second too. The third, number nine, had a key card still tucked in the slot of the deadbolt, pushed halfway out like someone had forgotten it.
He pulled it free and swiped the lock. The green light blinked. He pushed the door open.
The room was empty. A double bed with a beige spread, pulled tight. A nightstand with a lamp that had no shade. A closet door hanging open, inside a few wire hangers on a rod. The curtains were drawn but the window was cracked, letting in the far-off hum of traffic. The room smelled like bleach and something stale underneath it.
Jimmy stepped inside and closed the door behind him. The wall that separated room nine from room twelve ran along the far side of the bed. A cheap wooden cabinet, painted white and chipped at the corners, stood flush against it, its top bare.
He crossed the room, not sure what he was looking for. But his eyes caught a dark spot on the side of the cabinet, level with his chest. A knot in the wood, small and almost black.
He leaned closer. It wasn't a knot. It was a hole, drilled clean through the cabinet's side panel, no bigger than a pencil eraser. On the other side, the raw edge of the wood showed a matching ring, drilled from the room twelve side. Someone had used this before.
Jimmy bent down and put his eye to the hole.
The angle gave him a sliver of the next room, a wide slice across the bed and the chair beside it. A flat-screen TV sat on a dresser, its screen filled with a close-up of a woman's face, mouth open, eyes half shut. The audio came through the wall muted but clear enough to catch the shape of her moans.
On the edge of the bed, Vance sat back against the headboard, legs spread, a half-empty bottle of whiskey on the nightstand beside him. Sera was standing in front of him, shucking her blue jacket off her shoulders. It slid down her arms and dropped onto the floor. She was left in the red leather bra, her stomach bare, the C-section scar gleaming under the overhead light, the black tattoo of the Queen of Spades sprawling across the soft curve of her belly. The two other men sat on the chairs by the window, one rolling a joint with practiced fingers, the other nursing a can of beer.
Sera walked to Vance and settled onto his lap, straddling his thighs. She looped her arms around his neck and leaned in close, her blonde hair falling over his shoulder. He said something Jimmy couldn't catch, his voice low. She laughed and tilted her head back, exposing her throat. Vance's hands came up, one sliding under the hem of her skirt, the other gripping her hip, thumb working the waistband of her stockings.
The man who'd been rolling the joint licked the paper, sealed it, and held it out. Vance took it, brought it to his lips, and lit it. He took a long drag, held it, then passed it to Sera. She put it between her lips and inhaled, her eyes closing. A moment later she blew the smoke out over Vance's shoulder, slow and easy.
The film on the screen cut to a new angle. The mature white woman was on her knees now, three men standing over her, their hands in her hair, guiding her from one to the next. The sounds through the thin wall were steady, rhythmic, unhurried.
Sera watched the screen over Vance's shoulder, the joint burning low between her fingers. She took one last drag and stubbed it out on the nightstand. Vance moved his hand higher up her thigh, and she exhaled smoke through a smile, watching the film's woman work.
"You like that?" Vance asked. His voice was casual, a little bored, the way he'd ask about the weather.
"Mm." Sera tilted the smoke out of her mouth in a thin stream. "She's got good technique."
Vance laughed. He took the bottle off the nightstand, tipped a long swallow down his throat, and set it back with a thud. Then he lifted her off his lap, one arm under her thighs, and set her on the bed. Sera bounced on the mattress and laughed, a bright, open sound.
"Getting bold now, are we?"
In answer, Vance pulled his tank top over his head. His chest was a slab, dark and scarred at the collarbone, the gold chain still glinting against his sternum. He unbuckled his belt with one hand and let his jeans drop. He was already hard, thick and dark, curving up against his stomach.
The man who'd rolled the joint got up and pushed his pants down. The third man took a long pull from his beer, set it aside, and shucked his shirt. The room was all skin now, three dark bodies moving loose and easy under the flickering light.
Sera reached out and wrapped her red-nailed fingers around Vance's cock. She squeezed once, slow, and he let out a low breath through his nose. She leaned in and took him into her mouth. Her blonde hair fell forward around his hips. She worked him deep, her throat opening to take all of him, and one of the other men moved in beside her. He was already slick with spit. She pulled off Vance and turned her head to take the second man, then the third, cupping their balls in her palm while she moved between them.
The film's woman was doing the same thing on the screen. The room had doubled into itself, flesh and beige light and the wet sounds of her mouth.
Vance reached down and pulled her up by the shoulders. He was still hard, glistening. He turned her around, pushed her forward across the mattress, and the third man came up behind her at the same time, sliding his cock against her from behind. The second man crouched in front of her and her mouth opened to take him.
Vance lined himself up behind her. He was rough in a way that was almost offhand, a hand clapped over her hip, pulling her back. Meanwhile the second man pressed deeper into her throat, and the one behind her pushed into her ass, and Vance rocked into her cunt at the same moment. All three moving together, no rhythm between them at first, then finding one, a brute syncopation that drove her gasping between them.
The drug and the whiskey and the low heat of the room had taken something out of everyone's eyes. One of the men laughed, a short ragged sound. Sera's knees slipped on the spread and she went down hard onto all fours, taking all of them from the new angle, her mouth stretched around the second man while Vance and the other one drove into her from behind.
On the screen, the film's woman was bent over the same way. The room was nothing but the sound of skin and the wet drag of three bodies working her. Sera's back arched. Her nails dragged the spread. The black Queen of Spades on her belly shifted with every thrust.
One of the men reached under her and pinched her nipple through the red bra. She gasped around the cock in her mouth. Vance pulled her up off the other two with one arm around her waist, flipped her onto her back, and drove into her again. The second man caught her by the hair and pressed into her mouth from above. The third man lowered himself over her face, chest to chest with the second, their bodies trading her between them.
The woman on the screen had three men too. The sound from the TV had gone tinny and faint under the live noise of the room. Vance went hard and fast, his breath ramping, then pulled out at the last second and came across her stomach, hot and thick over the Queen of Spades. He didn't stop moving. The second man pulled out of her mouth and finished across her chest, and the third man was still pumping into her ass when Vance grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved him off, taking his place.
He pushed her legs up and drove back in. Sera laughed through her teeth, half broken, her whole body loose and flooded. He emptied himself again inside her, grinding deep, and then dropped over her, his chest pressed against hers, his forearm across her collarbone, heavy and still.
For a moment there was no sound but the film's woman still moaning on the other side of the wall. The two other men lay sprawled at the foot of the bed, panting.
On the screen, the credits had not rolled. The film had looped back to the opening title, a cheap and quiet piano loop over a black screen.
Sera traced a finger down Vance's spine. "You done playing so rough?"
"Getting there." His voice came out slow, almost drowsy. He rolled off her and lay on his back, one arm over his eyes.
Jimmy's eye stayed at the hole for one more second. Then the weight of what he'd watched hit him all at once, and he shoved back from the cabinet. His heart was hammering so hard he could feel it in his throat.
He crossed the room in three strides, pulled the door shut behind him, and hurried down the corridor. The flickering bulb stuttered overhead as he rounded the corner. He made himself slow down, forced his breathing even, and leaned against the wall outside room twelve. Hands in his pockets. Eyes on the door.
The muffled voices inside had gone quiet. Then a woman's laugh, bright and careless. Feet crossed the floor. The lock clicked.
Sera came out pulling her jacket around her like it was the only thing holding her together. The leather hung open, and Jimmy saw why. The red bra was gone. She'd put her jacket on over bare skin, and her stomach gleamed wet under the hallway light, the Queen of Spades tattoo slicked over with something that caught the glow. The C-section scar was a pale seam through a smear of white that ran from her navel down into the waistband of her skirt.
Her hair was a wreck. Blonde waves stuck to her forehead and cheeks in damp clumps, strands glued to the gloss on her lips. Her purple eyeshadow had creased into dark lines, and her mascara had run at the corners, leaving faint grey tracks down her cheeks.
She wore the jacket, her knee-high boots, and very little else. The skirt was still on but pushed sideways, the zip half undone. Her stockings were shredded. Ripped open at both thighs, a laddered run snaking down her left leg to the ankle. She wasn't wearing underwear at all. She hadn't had time to find it. The evidence of what she'd been doing ran in a thick strand down her inner thigh from under the skirt, mixing with the blue fabric.
She stopped in front of him and smiled, slow and easy, like she'd just stepped out of a spa.
"Still here," she said. "Good boy."
Jimmy opened his mouth. Nothing came out for a second. "You said you'd be a while."
"Turns out the boys got what they came for faster than I figured." She reached up and wiped the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. The black nail polish was chipped. "They get like that after a hit. Quick and mean, then they're done."
She looked him over. Her eyes were glassy, pupils blown wide. She swayed slightly on her boots, then steadied herself with a hand against the wall.
"Vance wants to know if you're coming in," she said.
"What?"
"He saw you out in the hall earlier. Watched you go down to room nine and come back." She tilted her head. "He said you got a curious look about you. Like you want to see the show up close. He said you can come in and film it on your phone if you want. Get a keepsake."
Jimmy stared at her. She was covered in them. It was on her chest, her stomach, her thighs. Her jacket had slid off one shoulder and he could see a smear of it across her collarbone, drying tacky. She hadn't cleaned up. She'd just pulled her clothes on and walked out to give him the message.
"I don't want to film anything," he said.
Sera's smile didn't waver. She stepped closer and put a hand on his chest, the black nails resting over his heart. Her fingers were sticky.
"You sure? He don't make that offer to just anybody. You'll probably never get a better chance to see what I can really do."
Jimmy shook his head. "I came here for you. Just you. Not them."
Something flickered in her glassy eyes. Surprise, maybe. Or something softer under the drug and the whiskey.
"Huh." She looked at him a moment longer, like she was trying to read something in his face. Then she laughed, a short sound that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Alright, baby. Your loss."
She turned and pushed the door back open. The room's light fell out into the hallway, and Jimmy caught a glimpse of the scene inside. Vance lounging on the bed, naked, the other two men sprawled at his feet. The TV still playing its looped film, the woman's moans a tinny soundtrack.
Sera looked back over her shoulder. "I'll be out again soon. Don't go anywhere, okay?"
She stepped inside and pulled the door shut. The lock clicked.
Jimmy stood alone in the corridor again. The door between them was thin and cheap, and he could hear the sounds starting up inside. Vance's low laugh. Sera's answering voice, teasing. The wet, familiar rhythm of the film bleeding through the wall.
He pressed his back against the peeling wallpaper and folded his arms. His heart was still going. He didn't know if it was the shock of seeing her like that, or the flash of something in her face when he'd said he'd come for her.
He waited.
