Chapter 14: The Black Seed's Price
The sphere's surface rippled like liquid obsidian, and Jenny's fingers sank into it as if it were water. David lunged forward, but the air between them had thickened into something solid, something that pressed against his chest and held him back.
"Jenny!"
She didn't turn. Her body was rigid, her spine arched, her head thrown back. The blackness from her eyes was spreading, tendrils of shadow crawling across her cheeks like ink in water.
The voice came again—not from the sphere, not from Jenny, but from everywhere. From the walls, from the floor, from inside David's own skull.
"She tastes like the beginning of everything. Do you know how long I have waited for a vessel such as this?"
"Let her go." David's voice cracked. "Whatever you are, whatever you want—take me instead."
"You?" The sphere pulsed with something that might have been amusement. "You are meat. Bones wrapped in longing. She is so much more. She is a doorway."
Jenny's lips moved, but the voice that emerged was layered—hers and something else, harmonizing in frequencies that made David's teeth ache.
"David. It's okay."
"Like hell it is."
"I can feel it." Her black eyes found his. "It's so old. It's been sleeping here since before the station. Since before humanity. It's not evil, David. It's just... hungry."
"Correct. I am hunger itself. The first hunger. The desire to consume, to grow, to become." The tendrils on Jenny's face pulsed. "And she has offered herself to me. Freely."
"I didn't—" Jenny's voice broke through, her own voice, raw and desperate. "I didn't offer. It just—it's inside me now. And it's so strong."
David pulled against the invisible barrier, his muscles straining. "Then fight it. You're stronger than this. You killed Lamia. You can kill this thing too."
"Lamia was a child. A shadow of a shadow. I am what Lamia dreamed of becoming." The sphere began to rise from its pedestal, hovering in the air between them. "But I am not unreasonable. I offer you a choice, David of Hedonism."
"What choice?"
"Let her go. Walk away. Leave this place and seal the door behind you. The station survives. The crew survives. Your precious Jenny becomes my vessel, and I will not harm a single soul aboard this station. I will simply... be."
David's heart hammered against his ribs. "And the other option?"
"Keep her. Fight me for her. And I will consume everything. The station. The crew. The memory of your name in the minds of those who love you. Everything you have ever touched or wanted or feared. I will unmake it all."
The barrier vanished. David stumbled forward, catching himself on the edge of the pedestal. Jenny was still frozen, her body rigid, the black tendrils pulsing beneath her skin.
"David." Her voice was barely a whisper. "Let me go."
"No."
"You have to. It's too strong. I can feel it eating me from the inside. If you don't let me go, it'll take everything. Everyone. You know I'm right."
He reached for her hand. Her skin was cold—so cold it burned.
"I don't care."
"You should. The station—"
"Fuck the station." He gripped her hand tighter. "Fuck the crew. Fuck everything. You're not sacrificing yourself for me. Not again. Not ever."
The sphere laughed. It was a horrible sound—like mountains grinding together, like stars dying.
"Such passion. Such futility. But I am not without mercy. There is another way."
David's eyes never left Jenny's face. "What way?"
"A ritual. An ancient one. Older than language. You must claim her. Body and soul. Mark her so completely that I cannot. Fill her so full of you that there is no room for me."
The words settled into David's chest like stones.
"You want me to—"
"Fuck her. Yes. Take her. Here, in my presence. Let me watch as you try to overwrite my claim with your own. It has been done before, in ages past. Sometimes it even works." The sphere pulsed with something that might have been anticipation. "But I warn you—the bond must be absolute. Half measures will not suffice. You must give her everything you have. Every breath. Every heartbeat. Every drop of your seed."
Jenny's black eyes widened. "David, no. It's a trick. It has to be."
"It's not a trick." He said it with a certainty that surprised even himself. He could feel it—some deep, primal part of him that recognized the truth in the seed's words. This was the only way. "I can feel it, Jenny. It's offering us a chance."
"A chance to what? Fuck me while it watches? That's not a chance, that's a violation."
"It's a fight." He cupped her face in his hands, ignoring the cold that seeped into his palms. "It's the only fight we have left. And I'm not going to lose you. Not to Lamia. Not to this thing. Not to anything."
The seed's presence swirled around them like a storm, dark tendrils of energy that licked at their skin. David could feel it pressing against his mind, testing his resolve, looking for weakness.
He didn't give it any.
"Strip," he said.
Jenny hesitated. The blackness in her eyes flickered, and for a moment he saw her—really saw her—the woman he loved, frightened and uncertain.
"David, what if I hurt you?"
"You won't."
"You don't know—"
"I know you." He pulled off his jumpsuit, letting it fall to the floor. His cock was already hard—not from desire, but from something deeper. Something that recognized this as a battle. "I know who you are. And I know that whatever's inside you, it's not stronger than what's between us."
She looked at him for a long moment. Then, slowly, she began to undress.
Her fingers trembled as she unzipped the jumpsuit, peeling it off her shoulders. The black tendrils had receded slightly, retreating to the edges of her face, but he could still see them pulsing beneath her skin.
She stepped out of the jumpsuit and stood before him—naked, vulnerable, her body marked with the burns and bruises of their earlier ordeal. The seed's presence swirled around her like a cloak, dark and hungry.
David reached for her.
His hands found her waist, pulling her against him. She was cold—so cold—but he didn't flinch. He kissed her, hard and deep, his tongue forcing its way past her lips. She tasted like ozone and something ancient, something that wasn't her.
But beneath that, he could still taste her. The woman he loved. The woman he would die for.
He broke the kiss and spun her around, bending her over the pedestal. The stone was cold against her stomach, and she gasped as he pressed her down.
"David—"
"Don't think." He positioned himself behind her, his cock pressing against the slick heat of her cunt. "Just feel."
He slammed into her.
Jenny screamed—two voices, hers and the seed's, harmonizing in a frequency that made the walls vibrate. Her cunt clenched around him, tight and wet, and he felt the seed's presence surge, trying to push him out.
He didn't let it.
He fucked her with a savagery he hadn't known he possessed, his hips slamming against her ass, his cock driving deep into her dripping cunt. The sound was obscene—wet and loud, echoing through the chamber like a drumbeat.
"You're mine," he growled, his fingers digging into her hips. "You hear me? Mine. Not Lamia's. Not this thing's. Mine."
Jenny moaned, her body shuddering beneath him. The seed's tendrils flickered, struggling to maintain their grip on her face.
"You can't have her." David's voice was raw, desperate. "You can't have any of her. Every inch of her is mine. Every thought. Every breath. Every drop of her cunt."
He fucked her harder, his rhythm brutal and unrelenting. The seed's presence swirled around them like a hurricane, trying to tear them apart, but he could feel it weakening. Each thrust drove it back. Each word of claim pushed it further from her.
"You cannot—" The seed's voice was strained, fractured. "She is mine. I found her first. I—"
"You found nothing." David reached around her, his fingers finding her clit. He rubbed it roughly, feeling her jerk against him. "She was mine before you ever touched her. She's been mine since the moment she stepped onto this station. And you're not taking her."
Jenny came with a scream—her voice alone, her own voice, raw and human. Her cunt clamped down on his cock, milking him, and he felt something shift.
The black tendrils on her face began to recede.
He didn't stop. He kept fucking her, his fingers still working her clit, drawing orgasm after orgasm from her trembling body. She was sobbing now—not from pain, but from release, from the sheer overwhelming intensity of it.
"David—David, please—"
"Not yet." He was close—so close—but he wasn't done. "Tell me who you are."
"I'm—I'm Jenny—"
"Tell me who you belong to."
"You." Her voice broke. "I belong to you."
"Say it again."
"I belong to you. Only you. Always you."
He came with a roar, his cock pulsing deep inside her, filling her with his seed. The seed's presence screamed—a sound that was not sound, a frequency that shattered the quantum grow-lights and sent the bioluminescent flora into a frenzy of panicked blooming.
And then it was gone.
The black tendrils vanished from Jenny's face. Her eyes—flickering, fading—returned to their normal blue. She collapsed against the pedestal, her body trembling, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
David pulled out of her and gathered her in his arms. She was warm now—warm and soft and alive.
"Jenny. Jenny, look at me."
She looked up at him. Her eyes were blue. Her eyes were her own.
"David?"
"I'm here. I'm right here."
She burst into tears.
He held her, rocking her gently, ignoring the chaos around them. The chamber was dark now—the sphere had fallen from its pedestal, its surface dull and lifeless. The symbols on the walls had faded to nothing. The seed was gone.
But he could still feel it.
A cold knot of darkness in her chest, pulsing faintly. A mark. A scar. Something that would never fully heal.
"You've marked her." The seed's voice was faint now, barely a whisper at the edge of his consciousness. "She will never be fully yours. Not completely. Not ever."
David tightened his grip on Jenny. "She's mine enough."
The seed laughed—a weak, dying sound. "We shall see. We shall see."
And then it was silent.
They lay together on the cold stone floor, their bodies intertwined, their breath slowly returning to normal. The station hummed around them—life support, power grids, the endless machinery of survival.
"David," Jenny whispered. "What happened?"
"You saved yourself." He kissed her forehead. "You fought it off. You're stronger than you know."
"I don't feel strong." She touched her chest. "I feel... empty. And cold."
"I know." He pulled her closer. "But we'll figure it out. Together."
She was silent for a long moment. Then: "It's still there, isn't it? The seed."
"Yeah."
"I can feel it. Like a splinter. Buried deep."
"We'll find a way to remove it."
"And if we can't?"
He didn't have an answer for that.
They lay in the darkness, two broken people clinging to each other in the ruins of something ancient and terrible. Above them, the station continued its eternal hum, indifferent to their pain, their love, their desperate hope.
Vex's voice crackled through the comm. "David? Jenny? Are you there?"
"We're here." David's voice was hoarse. "We're alive."
"I'm reading some strange biosigns from both of you. What happened?"
"We'll explain later." He looked down at Jenny, at the cold knot pulsing in her chest, at the faint amber glow that flickered at the edges of her pupils. "Right now, we just need to rest."
"Understood. I'll maintain the station. Take all the time you need."
The comm went silent.
Jenny lifted her head, looking at him with eyes that were almost her own. "David?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
He smiled—a tired, broken smile. "I love you too."
She laid her head on his chest, and for a moment—just a moment—the cold knot in her chest seemed to loosen.
But David knew the truth.
The seed was still there. Waiting. Watching. And someday—maybe tomorrow, maybe in a year, maybe in a decade—it would try again.
And when it did, they would be ready.
Together.
The station's lights flickered once, twice, then steadied.
And somewhere in the depths of Sublevel 20, the dead sphere began to pulse.
Just once.
Just enough to let them know it wasn't finished.
Not yet.
