Chapter 1: Introduction
The college library was a quiet and peaceful place away from the bustling noise of the college campus.
Cindy spent most of her time there, either working on her assignments or hiding from the rest of the world. She had always been a shy girl—not something that helped win friends in college. The library's calm environment soothed her, and she felt most at ease in its worn leather armchairs, surrounded by old books that knew no judgment.
She flipped through the pages of her English Literature textbook, her eyes scanning the lines but her mind wandering elsewhere. Her thoughts drifted to the party she'd been invited to last weekend.
She had meant to go, even purchased a new dress for the occasion, but as the clock ticked closer to the event, her anxiety spiked like a fever. She ended up cancelling her plans and spent the night alone in her room, watching reruns of obscure sitcoms.
"Cindy, right?"
The sudden intrusion of a male voice startled her, sending her book sliding across the arm of the chair. She quickly bent down to grab it, causing a lock of her long blonde hair to fall across her face.
"Yes," she replied tentatively, turning to see who had addressed her.
A tall, athletic figure stood there, blocking out the light from the large windows behind him. His blonde hair was cropped short, and his blue eyes crinkled at the corners as he flashed a friendly smile. "I'm Matt."
She took a moment to recognize him—Matt, the star quarterback of the football team. Up close, he was even more striking, his presence commanding the space around him like a magnet.
"Nice to meet you," Cindy managed, her voice barely above a whisper.
She felt a strange fluttering in her stomach, a combination of surprise and maybe something else she couldn't quite pinpoint.
Matt noticed her discomfort and took a step back, his smile softening. "I didn't mean to scare you," he said, his voice warm and reassuring. "I just saw you sitting here all by yourself and thought I'd come say hi."
Cindy offered a shy smile, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Oh, no, you didn't scare me. I just... I was lost in thought."
Matt nodded, his gaze flicking to the book in her lap.
"Hard at work, huh?" He leaned against the nearby bookshelf, his arms casually crossed. "Or is that just a clever disguise to make everyone else feel bad about how little they're doing?"
Cindy chuckled softly, shaking her head. "No, I wish that were the case. I'm just struggling with this essay on Victorian Literature," she admitted, tapping the book. "I can't seem to find my angle."
"Well, that's a subject I know next to nothing about," Matt said, sticking his hands in his pockets, "but if you want, we could maybe tackle it together.
You know, two heads are better than one and all that."
Cindy looked at him quizzically, unsure whether to take him seriously. "Really? You'd help me with English Lit?"
Matt shrugged casually. "Why not?" Matt replied with a grin.
"Besides, it's not every day you get to help a beautiful girl with her homework."
Cindy felt her cheeks flush at his compliment, her heart pounding slightly faster. She quickly looked down at her book, hiding her reaction behind her hair.
"That's very nice of you," she said softly.
"I could use some help."
Matt grinned. "Then it's settled. How about we meet at my place tomorrow?"
Cindy nodded, her shyness slowly melting away under his warm smile. "Okay. That would be nice." Cindy could hardly contain her excitement. Neither could Matt.
