Chapter 1: Opening Image
As Mei opened her heavy eyelids that sunny morning, a dull throbbing replaced the dead weight that smothered her chest and limbs just moments before. Sighing through pursed lips, she forced herself to sit up and survey the luxurious, gilded chamber that wrapped around her. The fragrance of cherry blossoms crept into the room from the balcony's potted trees. She had to admit, the languid dance of soft sunlight on shimmering silk made for quite the sight.
Yet, it was a sight she'd never seen before. Panic clawed at her throat as she realized this wasn't her bedchamber. The memories of her past life as Li Wei, the immortal, were still fresh, but the reflection staring back at her was undeniably mortal. Long, lustrous black hair cascaded down her shoulders, framing a face that was soft and delicate—a stark contrast to the chiseled features she was accustomed to.
"What in the heavens...?" she muttered, running her fingers along her new face, tracing the curve of her eyebrows, the fullness of her lips.
"This is going to take some getting used to."
A soft knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. "Come in," she called, her voice higher-pitched than she remembered. The door creaked open, revealing a young woman carrying a tray laden with steaming food and fragrant tea. Mei's stomach growled at the sight, reminding her that this new body had needs she'd long forgotten.
"Good morning, mistress," the woman said, setting the tray down on the table beside the bed. "I'm Lan, your personal maid.
I've been instructed to assist you in any way I can," the woman added with a warm smile. Mei noted her round cheeks, rosy from the effort of carrying the tray, and the simple yet clean attire that marked her as a palace servant.
"Thank you, Lan," Mei replied, returning the smile. "I must admit, I'm a bit disoriented. Could you tell me where I am?"
Lan's eyes widened slightly, but she recovered quickly. "Of course, mistress. You're in the Palace of Eternal Light, the residence of His Majesty, Emperor Xuan.
You were found unconscious in the imperial gardens three days ago. The Emperor himself ordered you to be brought here and taken care of. The physicians say you suffer from selective amnesia, mistress. You seem to remember everything except the events leading up to your collapse."
Mei nodded slowly, absorbing the information. So, she was in the palace, and the Emperor had taken an interest in her. This could work to her advantage. She needed to find out more about this life, this body, and this world if she was to acquire the imperial luck she needed to regain her immortality.
Mei decided to play along with the amnesia ruse for now. It would give her the perfect excuse to ask questions and explore the palace without raising suspicion.
"Lan, could you help me get dressed? I'd like to thank the Emperor personally for his kindness," Mei said, swinging her legs off the bed and standing up. The room spun briefly, but she steadied herself, her immortal instincts kicking in despite the mortal body.
Lan beamed at her.
"Of course, mistress! I'll fetch some suitable attire for you." She bustled off, leaving Mei alone with her thoughts. As she waited, Mei took a moment to examine her new surroundings. The room was opulent, furnished with intricate wooden furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and adorned with silk hangings depicting scenes of celestial beings and mythical creatures. A large, ornate mirror stood in one corner, and Mei approached it, curious to see her reflection more clearly.
As she stepped closer, she caught sight of her new form and paused, taking in the details. Her cheekbones were high, her eyes large and almond-shaped, framed by thick, dark lashes. A small, straight nose, and those full lips she'd noticed earlier completed the picture. She looked young, perhaps eighteen or nineteen in mortal years. Her skin was smooth and unblemished, a clear canvas compared to the weathered, wise visage she'd worn as Li Wei.
A soft knock at the door announced Lan's return.
She entered, carrying an armful of vibrant silks and intricate embroidery. "I've brought some of the Emperor's favorite gowns for you to choose from, mistress," she said, laying them out on the bed with careful precision.
Mei raised an eyebrow at the array of fabrics, each one more luxurious than the last. "The Emperor has quite the eye for fashion," she remarked, running her fingers over the delicate stitching on one of the gowns.
Lan giggled. "Oh, these aren't his, mistress. They belong to the imperial concubines.
His Majesty has a particular interest in fashion and demands only the finest for those who grace his presence," Lan explained, her cheeks flushing slightly. Mei nodded, understanding the implications. This was a world filled with power, intrigue, and competition. She would need to navigate it carefully.
Mei picked up a gown of deep emerald green, the color of growing things and the imperial family's favored hue. The silk was cool and smooth beneath her fingertips, adorned with intricate golden phoenixes that seemed to dance in the light. "This one," she decided, handing it to Lan.
Lan's eyes lit up.
"An excellent choice, mistress! That color will complement your complexion beautifully." She helped Mei into the gown, adjusting the intricate fastenings and cinching the waist with a silken sash. The fabric clung to Mei's figure, accentuating her newfound curves, before falling in soft folds to the floor. Mei couldn't help but feel a sense of unfamiliarity, yet also a certain exhilaration, at the sensation of wearing such a garment.
"Your hair, mistress," Lan said, brushing strands away from Mei's face.
"Shall I style it in the imperial fashion?"
Mei glanced at herself in the mirror, considering the question. As Li Wei, she'd kept her hair short and simple, a practical style for an immortal warrior. But now, as Mei, she wanted to embrace her new appearance and fit in with her surroundings.
"Yes, please," she replied, sitting down at the vanity as Lan began to brush her hair. The maid's deft fingers worked quickly, twisting and pinning the long locks into an elaborate updo adorned with jade hairpins.
Mei watched in the mirror as her reflection transformed, the style accentuating her features and giving her an air of elegance that felt both foreign and intriguing. Once Lan finished, she stepped back, a satisfied smile on her face.
"There, mistress. You look every inch the imperial concubine," she said, her eyes sparkling with admiration.
Mei stood up, her gaze sweeping over her reflection once more. She barely recognized herself, yet there was a sense of familiarity lurking beneath the surface. Perhaps it was the determination in her eyes, or the hint of defiance in her jawline.
Whatever it was, Mei felt a spark of recognition, a reminder of the immortal she once was. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the role she was about to play.
"Thank you, Lan," she said, turning to face the maid. "I feel ready to meet the Emperor now."
Lan beamed at her, clearly pleased with her handiwork. "I'll escort you to the imperial audience chamber, mistress.
His Majesty is expecting you," Lan said, leading the way out of the bedroom. Mei followed, her silk gown rustling softly with each step. As they walked through the palace corridors, she took in the opulent surroundings, her immortal senses heightened despite her mortal body. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the distant sound of music, a soft melody played on a guqin, perhaps.
To her left, a group of eunuchs was polishing the intricate carvings on a grand screen, their movements precise and practiced.
To her right, a cluster of concubines strolled leisurely across the courtyard, their laughter as light as the silk gowns they wore. Mei couldn't help but notice the way they eyed her, their smiles tight and their gazes appraising. She knew she would have to win them over if she was to gain their trust and learn more about this world.
They reached the imperial audience chamber, its massive double doors guarded by two stern-faced soldiers. Lan paused, turning to Mei with a reassuring smile. "His Majesty will be delighted to see you in such fine health, mistress.
Remember, when addressing the Emperor, you must bow deeply and address him as 'Your Majesty' or 'Your Imperial Majesty'," Lan whispered, her eyes flicking towards the guards.
Mei nodded, committing the etiquette to memory. "Thank you, Lan. I won't forget."
The guards pushed open the heavy doors, revealing the expansive audience chamber. The room was immense, with towering columns lined with dragons coiled around pearls, and lanterns hanging from the ceiling like a constellation of gold and jade. At the far end, seated on an ornate throne, was Emperor Xuan.
Mei had seen many powerful figures in her centuries as Li Wei, but there was something undeniably magnetic about the young ruler. His eyes, dark and piercing, seemed to hold the depth of the cosmos, while his posture exuded an aura of authority that was impossible to ignore. He was dressed in robes of rich crimson, embroidered with intricate golden dragons that seemed to writhe and dance in the light. A jade seal hung from his belt, a symbol of his power and status.
Mei approached the throne, her footsteps echoing softly on the polished marble floor.
She could feel the weight of the Emperor's gaze as she walked, each step measured and deliberate. As she reached the foot of the throne, she sank into a deep curtsy, her head bowed low.
"Your Imperial Majesty," she murmured, her voice steady despite the nervous energy coursing through her veins. "I am deeply grateful for your kindness and generosity in taking me in and caring for me. I am in your debt."
Emperor Xuan regarded her silently for a moment, his expression inscrutable. Then, he spoke, his voice a rich baritone that filled the chamber.
"Rise, child. I am pleased to see you in good health."
Mei lifted her head, her eyes meeting the Emperor's. She could see the curiosity lurking in their depths, but also a hint of something else—amusement, perhaps? She decided to play along, keeping her expression demure.
"I must confess, Your Imperial Majesty, I am still quite confused about what happened to me. I remember very little, save for fragments of dreams and shadows," she said, her voice laced with just the right amount of vulnerability.
Emperor Xuan leaned forward in his throne, his gaze never leaving hers.
"Indeed, the physicians have informed me of your condition. It is most curious, is it not?" He paused, as if considering his next words. "Tell me, child, what do you remember of your past?"
Mei hesitated before responding, choosing her words carefully. "I recall living in a humble village, tending to my family's rice fields. I helped my mother with the cooking and cleaning, and I had a younger brother who adored me." She allowed a small, sad smile to touch her lips. "But that's all I can seem to grasp.
Everything else is a blur," Mei added, her voice barely above a whisper. She watched as Emperor Xuan processed her words, his eyes never leaving hers. She could see the wheels turning in his mind, the gears of a sharp intellect clicking into place.
"You speak of your family with fondness," he observed, his voice thoughtful. "Yet, you do not seem overly distressed by your current predicament. Most young women in your situation would be weeping and wailing, begging to return to their families."
Mei offered him a small, enigmatic smile.
"Oh, Your Imperial Majesty, I assure you, I am deeply grateful for your kindness. But I must admit, the thought of returning to my humble life in the village holds little appeal. I find myself...rather intrigued by the possibility of serving you here in the palace," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She let her eyes meet his, holding his gaze for a moment before lowering her head demurely.
Emperor Xuan studied her, his expression inscrutable. "Intrigued, you say?" he echoed, his voice thoughtful.
"And why, pray tell, should you find the prospect of serving me here in the palace so intriguing?"
Mei chose her words carefully, wanting to pique his interest without seeming too eager. "Your Imperial Majesty, I have always been drawn to stories of power and grandeur. Growing up in a simple village, I was captivated by tales of the imperial court, of the intrigues and alliances that shape our world.
I yearned for a chance to see these stories unfold firsthand, to perhaps even play a part in them." Mei let her voice trail off, as if lost in thought, before continuing. "And now, fate has presented me with this opportunity. How could I not be intrigued?"
Emperor Xuan's eyes narrowed slightly, a hint of curiosity flickering in their depths. "Fate, you say?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "It seems to me that fate has been particularly kind to you, child.
To find yourself in the imperial palace, with no memory of your past, and yet, here you stand, poised and articulate, with a keen interest in the very heart of our empire. It is...intriguing," Emperor Xuan said, his gaze never leaving Mei's face. She could see the cogs turning in his mind, the gears of a sharp intellect clicking into place.
Mei offered him a small, enigmatic smile, her eyes downcast. "I am merely a humble village girl, Your Imperial Majesty. I cannot claim to understand the ways of fate.
I only know that I am here, before you now, eager to serve and learn," Mei replied, her voice soft yet steady. She could feel the Emperor's gaze on her, intense and appraising, as if he were trying to peer into the depths of her soul. She met his gaze briefly before lowering her eyes once more, a demure gesture that belied the keen intelligence behind them.
Emperor Xuan leaned back in his throne, his fingers tapping thoughtfully against the armrest. "Very well, child. I shall give you the opportunity to serve me here in the palace.
I must warn you, however, that life at court is not as glamorous as the tales you've heard. It is filled with intrigue, competition, and not everyone will welcome you with open arms," Emperor Xuan said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the chamber.
Mei nodded, her expression serious. "I understand, Your Imperial Majesty. I am prepared to face whatever challenges may come my way. I only wish to prove myself worthy of your kindness and generosity."
The Emperor studied her for a moment longer before nodding. "Very well. I shall assign you to the imperial library.
It is a place of knowledge and tranquility, far removed from the petty squabbles that often plague the concubines' quarters. As you are new to the palace and possess no memories of your past, it seems fitting that you should be surrounded by the wisdom of the ages.
Mei bowed deeply, concealing her surprise at the Emperor's unexpected decision. The library? She had envisioned herself being assigned to some role within the Emperor's inner circle, where she could observe his daily life and learn more about his imperial luck. But the library?
It seemed an odd choice, given her desire to be closer to the Emperor and learn more about his imperial luck. Still, Mei was not one to question fate, not when it presented her with an opportunity to further her goals, no matter how unexpected.
"Thank you, Your Imperial Majesty," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. "I look forward to serving you in this capacity."
Emperor Xuan nodded, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "I am glad to hear it. Someone will come to teach you etiquette of palace life and guide you to the library. Until then, Lan will attend to your needs. Remember, child, in this world, knowledge is power. Use your time in the library wisely," Emperor Xuan said, his gaze holding a hint of warning.
Mei bowed again, hiding her curiosity at the Emperor's words. Knowledge was indeed power, but she couldn't help feeling that there was more to his assignment than met the eye. "I shall do my best to learn and serve, Your Imperial Majesty."
With a nod, Emperor Xuan dismissed her.
Mei retreated backwards, bowing deeply until she reached the doorway, where she turned and left the audience chamber. Lan was waiting for her, a warm smile on her face.
"Mistress, did His Majesty assign you a new role?" she asked, falling into step beside Mei as they walked back through the palace corridors.
Mei nodded, her mind still racing with thoughts of the Emperor's curious decision. "Yes, he has. I am to serve in the imperial library," she replied, keeping her voice neutral.
Lan's eyes widened in surprise. "The library, mistress?
That's...unexpected," Lan said, her brow furrowing slightly. "Forgive me, but I would have thought His Majesty would assign you to a more...visible role in the palace."
Mei offered Lan a small, enigmatic smile. "Sometimes, Lan, the most valuable treasures are hidden away in unexpected places. Besides, I am not here to simply be seen. I wish to learn, to understand the true workings of this world."
Lan nodded, her expression thoughtful. "I see, mistress. In that case, I shall do my best to assist you in any way I can.
Now, let us return to your chambers so you may prepare for your new role. I have also taken the liberty of arranging a meeting with Madam Chen, the head of the palace eunuchs. She will be able to instruct you on the proper etiquette and customs expected of those who serve in the imperial palace," Lan said, her voice filled with efficiency.
Mei nodded, grateful for Lan's guidance. I appreciate your help more than you know."
As they walked back to Mei's chambers, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Emperor Xuan's decision than met the eye.
