Chapter 10: String Theory
The phone screen glowed, casting a blueish light across Lena’s focused face as she adjusted the ring light. "Hey, everyone, welcome back," she said, her voice a practiced chirp that felt foreign in her own ears. She gestured to the small pile of fabric on her bed—a collection of bikinis that seemed to shrink with each new delivery. Her fingers, still smelling faintly of the tropical perfume she’d spritzed on for the camera, trembled as she picked up the first set. It was a neon green string bikini, so minimal it looked like it could get lost in a fist.
"This one’s for confidence, you know?" she mumbled to herself, more than to the growing number of viewers. As she slipped out of her robe, the cool dorm air raised goosebumps on her skin, and she forced a smile. The chat scrolled rapidly on her second monitor, emojis and comments blurring into a stream of fire emojis and heart-eyes. "Damn, Lena, showing off those gains!" one comment read, and she felt a flush of pride mixed with something sharper, like shame. She tied the strings at her hips, the thin fabric digging in, and turned to show the back, where the triangle top barely contained her.
"Next up is this little number," she said, holding up a black mesh piece that was more hole than material. Her mind drifted to Jax’s bet, his smug voice echoing: "You’ll be posing in pink micro shorts by month’s end." She pushed the thought away, focusing on the way the mesh felt against her skin—itchy, but empowering, she told herself. "Body positivity is about owning every part of you," she recited, a mantra she’d read online. As she changed into the third bikini, a red dental floss-thong bottom, she caught her reflection in the dark screen of her laptop. The girl staring back had smudged eyeliner and a hollow look in her eyes, a far cry from the coder who once debated algorithms.
"You’re just embracing your femininity," she whispered, her breath fogging the screen for a second. A new comment popped up: "How much for a private show?" and her heart hammered, part anger, part thrill. She forced a laugh, playing it off. "As if I’d ever charge for this—it’s all about the community!" But as the stream ended, she sat in the silence, the discarded bikinis a colorful heap.
The silence in the room was a physical weight after the digital noise. She stared at the heap of neon fabric, each tiny string a monument to a version of herself she no longer recognized. Her skin still hummed with the phantom energy of a thousand watching eyes.
A specific comment replayed in her head, not the crude ones, but a simple question: "Do you do private sessions?" Her first instinct had been a vehement, internal no. But now, alone, the idea didn't feel offensive. It felt logical. It would be the same performance, just more efficient. A direct transaction. She wouldn't even need the bikinis; her own underwear would do. The math was irrefutable. One private show could equal ten hauls in earnings. She counted the crumpled bills from her last stream, a meager $47.32. "It's just a different platform," she whispered to the empty room, the words tasting like a lie she was choosing to swallow. "It's still about control." Her phone buzzed, a notification from Jax: "Saw the stream. Looking like a real influencer." She didn't reply, her mind already cataloging which of her bras were the most persuasive.
