Chapter 10: the final act of their weekend

The water held them in a kind of suspended silence. It was the quiet after the explosion, where the ringing in your ears is the only sound. Abby floated on her back, the cool liquid erasing the map of touches that had been written on her skin. She could feel the phantom impressions—the grip of hands, the pressure of bodies—dissolving into the chlorine blue.

Next to her, Ben treaded water, his movements slow and easy. He wasn'tt looking at her. He was just... present. A warm buoy in the cool expanse.

It was Tom who broke the surface tension. He swam to the shallow end and hoisted himself out, water streaming from his lean frame. He didn’t reach for a towel. He stood there, dripping on the warm stone, and looked back at them all, a conductor surveying his orchestra.

“Feel cleaner?” he asked, his voice carrying easily in the twilight.

“I feel pruney,” Rita said, wiggling her fingers in the water.

“Good.” Tom grabbed a bottle of whiskey from a low table and took a long pull. He passed it to Char as she emerged, sleek as a seal. She drank, her throat working, then handed it to Bob who had followed her out. The bottle began to circle, a liquid sacrament.

Abby swam to the steps and walked out. The air was cooler now, raising goosebumps on her arms and legs. Ben handed her a plush towel and she wrapped it around her shoulders, but the damp chill was inside.

“The exhibit was interesting,” Tom said, as they all gradually pooled on the outdoor loungers, a scattered, tired congregation. “A lot of data.”

“Data?” Adam laughed, rubbing his hair with a towel. “That’s one word for it.”

“It is,” Tom said, serious now. He sat on the edge of a lounger, elbows on his knees. “Performance under observation. Motivations revealed. Char needed to prove mastery. Rita sought chaos for its own

sake.” His gaze shifted to Beth, who was wringing water from her red hair. “Beth conducted an experiment. Controlled transfer of energy.” Finally, he looked at Abby. The night insects seemed to quiet. “And Abby… demonstrated consumption. A complete sourcing of pleasure. Not for us. From us.”

His words hung there, clinical and devastatingly accurate. Abby pulled the towel tighter.

“What’s the verdict, doc?” Rita asked, her flippancy not quite masking her interest.

“No verdict.” Tom stood, walking slowly around the perimeter of the pool. The underwater lights painted his path in rippling cyan. “Just observation. We’ve stripped the pretense. The ‘counseling’ framework. What’s left is the raw material of desire. It’s fascinating.”

Char took the whiskey bottle back. “You make it sound like we’re lab rats.”

“Aren’t we?” Tom smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “The maze is just more comfortable.”

A sudden, thick silence fell. The analysis, for all its truth, felt like a cold draft. It exposed the architecture of the weekend, the invisible wires holding their ecstasy aloft. Ben shifted beside Abby.

“So what now?” Adam’s question was simple, blunt. “We’ve observed the data. Do we write a paper?”

“Now,” Tom said, stopping directly under a softly glowing lantern, “we sit with what we’ve learned about ourselves. In silence. For one full minute.” He checked his watch. “No speaking. Just feel what you’re really feeling, behind the performance, behind the arousal. Go.”

It was an absurd, powerful directive. The group, still damp and mostly naked, fell into a strained quiet. The only sounds were the lap of pool water and the distant call of a night bird.

Abby closed her eyes. She tried to feel past the physical hum, the pleasant exhaustion. What was underneath? A sharp, surprising needle of loneliness. She had been a source, a bridge, a consumer. She had been seen in a way she’d never been seen before. Yet, in the center of that crowd, she felt a distinct, singular isolation.

She opened her eyes and saw Ben staring into the blackness of the lake beyond the cliff. His jaw was tight. She saw Rita’s confident smirk had vanished, replaced by a look of vacant uncertainty. Beth was studying her own hands as if they were foreign tools. Char’s expression was unreadable, her arm linked with Tom’s, but her body was angled slightly away.

“Time,” Tom announced, his voice softer now. “Nobody has to share.”

“Good,” Bob muttered, standing abruptly. “I’m getting a real drink.”

The spell broke, but the mood had fundamentally shifted. The hedonistic frenzy of the afternoon was gone, replaced by a heavier, more reflective atmosphere. They drifted inside, not as a charged collective, but as individuals wrapped in private thoughts.

Abby found herself in the vast kitchen, pouring a glass of cold water. Ben leaned against the counter next to her.

“You okay?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” she said, and it was the most honest thing she’d said all day. “You?”

“That minute was harder than any of the… exhibits.” He took her glass and sipped from it, a simple, domestic act that felt more intimate now than anything else. “He’s right, though. It’s all just… raw material now.”

From the great living room, they heard the low murmur of conversation, punctuated by Rita’s laugh, but it sounded forced. The house itself seemed to be holding its breath, the gleaming marble and velvet waiting to see what they would build from the rubble of their stripped pretenses. The night stretched ahead, vast and uncertain, the final act of their weekend still unwritten.

THE END!
