Chapter 1: Introduction

The morning sun was a lazy, golden glow creeping over San Diego, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink as if it were blushing at the thought of another steamy day ahead. The air was already warm, promising the usual California perfection that made living here a dream for most—except maybe when it came to rush hour traffic.

Johnny throw off the covers and groaned, his alarm blaring from the bedside table like a siren. His blue eyes squinted against the harsh light, and he reached over to slap the snooze button. Five more minutes. Just five more minutes.

Johnny rolled onto his back, staring up at the ceiling fan lazily spinning above him. His apartment was modern, all clean lines and minimal clutter, a reflection of his orderly life. Except for the pile of laundry in the corner, waiting for him to muster the motivation to do something about it.

The fan whirred softly, a soothing sound that usually helped him drift back off to sleep. But not today. Today, he had a meeting with his boss to discuss a potential promotion, and the last thing he wanted was to look disheveled and tired.

He flipped onto his side, checking the time on his phone. Damn, he was already running late.

He'd have to skip breakfast and just grab a coffee on the way to the office. He stumbled out of bed, pulling on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, barely glancing in the mirror as he ran a hand through his short, brown hair. He grabbed his keys and wallet, and he was out the door, the cool ocean breeze greeting him as he headed towards the elevator.

The coffee shop was bustling as usual, the scent of roasted beans and sweet pastries filling the air. Johnny took his place in line, pulling out his phone to check his emails while he waited. He knew what he wanted—a black coffee, no sugar, no cream.

Just a straightforward start to the day. The line moved quickly, and he found himself at the counter, placing his usual order. But today, something was different.

"Good morning!" chirped a voice from behind the counter. Johnny looked up, his eyes meeting those of a new barista. She was young, with wild curls and a warm smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes. A small, silver pentacle dangled from a chain around her neck, glinting in the overhead light. "Your usual, right? The tall, dark, and handsome?"

Johnny raised an eyebrow.

"Tall, dark, and handsome? I think you might be thinking of someone else." He grinned, amused.

The barista chuckled, winking at him. "Oh, absolutely not. You're the first tall, dark, and handsome I've seen this morning."

Johnny laughed, shaking his head. "Well, in that case, you must be new here. I'm Johnny, and I usually just get a black coffee."

"Grace!" she replied, extending a hand over the counter. "And I'm sorry, Johnny, but we're all out of black coffee this morning. How about a frappe instead?

On the house," Grace suggested with a smile, her hand already moving to the blender.

Johnny hesitated, glancing at his watch. He was already running late, but the thought of a frappe on a warm morning was tempting. "Alright, why not? Thanks, Grace."

Grace winked at him again. "Coming right up!"

Johnny moved to the side to wait for his drink, his eyes scanning the crowd. The coffee shop was packed with the usual morning rush—businesspeople in suits, students with laptops, and a few tourists with cameras slung around their necks.
