Chapter 1: The Huntress

he

The bar smelled of spilled ale and something faintly floral that clung to the air like a memory. I'd been watching him for the better part of an hour, my elbows propped on the scarred wooden counter, my fingers tracing lazy patterns through the condensation rings left by my untouched drink. The other patrons had thinned out, drifting into the night with their laughter and their loud goodbyes, until it was just the two of us and the weary barkeep wiping down glasses that would never quite come clean.

Albert sat three stools down, nursing a whiskey he'd barely touched. His blue eyes kept finding me, then darting away like he'd been caught doing something shameful. I felt his heartbeat through the floorboards, through the stale air between us—a steady, guarded rhythm that told me more than his silence ever could. There was a wall around him, thick and carefully constructed, but walls have cracks. And I've always been good at finding them.

The barkeep yawned, glancing at the clock above the mirror. "Last call, friends. Drink up."

Albert drained his glass in one motion, the whiskey burning a path I could almost taste at the back of my throat. He stood, his movements careful and deliberate, a man who'd learned to make himself smaller than he was. His jacket hung loose on his shoulders, and there was a weariness in the way he carried himself that made something in my chest ache. I let him walk past me, let him think he was escaping, and then I slid off my stool and followed.

The night air hit me like a blessing. Andorran moons hung heavy and close, their twin lights casting silver-blue shadows across the Path of Whispers. The forest embraced the worn dirt track, ancient trees bending inward like curious spectators, their leaves rustling with secrets I could almost hear. Albert's footsteps crunched ahead of me, steady and unhurried, but I caught the hitch in his stride when he noticed I was there.

"You're following me," he said without turning around.

"I'm walking the same direction as you." I let my bare feet find the cool earth, my dress swaying around my thighs. "It's a free path."

He stopped then, half-turning to look at me over his shoulder. The moonlight caught the lines around his eyes, the silver threading through his dark hair, the careful set of his jaw. "It's late. Shouldn't you be... somewhere else?"

"Shouldn't you?"

Something flickered across his face—surprise, maybe, or the first stirring of interest he couldn't quite suppress. He resumed walking, but slower now, his pace adjusting to match mine. I felt his emotions shifting like weather patterns: curiosity warring with caution, desire battling years of disciplined restraint. The patterns beneath my skin rippled in response, violets and deep blues chasing each other across my arms before I stilled them.

"You're not from here," he said after a long moment.

"Observant." I smiled, letting him see my small, pointed ears. "I'm Elona."

"Albert." He said it like an offering, like he wasn't sure I'd want it.

We walked in silence for a while, the Path of Whispers curving through the trees. I let my senses stretch toward him, brushing against the edges of his mind. Images surfaced—fragmented, half-formed. A younger version of himself laughing with someone he loved. The sharp sting of loss he'd never quite processed. And beneath it all, buried so deep he probably didn't acknowledge it even to himself, a current of raw, aching need. His thoughts flickered to my body, to the curve of my hip beneath my thin dress, and I felt heat bloom through my belly like a struck match.

"You're doing something," he said quietly. "I can feel it."

"What do you feel?"

He stopped walking. We'd reached the clearing where the Path opened into a circle of moss-covered stones, the twin moons casting their silver light down like a benediction. Albert turned to face me fully, his blue eyes searching mine with an intensity that made my bioluminescent patterns flare brighter despite my attempts to control them.

"I feel..." He trailed off, shaking his head. "I don't know what I feel anymore. It's been so long since I let myself feel anything."

I stepped closer, close enough to see the pulse beating in his throat. "Then why did you let me follow you?"

His laugh was hollow, almost bitter. "Maybe I wanted to be caught."

The words hung between us, heavy with meaning. I reached up and let my dress slip from one shoulder, the fabric sliding down my arm before I caught it. The moonlight painted silver across my light blue skin, and I knew the patterns swirling beneath its surface were shifting to something warmer, something that spoke of interest and intent. His eyes tracked the movement, lingered on the exposed curve of my shoulder, and I felt his restraint fraying like old rope.

"Albert." My voice was a whisper, but it carried his name like a promise. "I can feel what you want. What you've always wanted but never allowed yourself to have."

He swallowed hard. "You don't know me."

"I know you're lonely. I know you've built walls so high that even you forgot what was on the other side." I let the dress slip a little more. "I know you watched me all night and told yourself you were too old, too tired, too broken. But you're not any of those things, Albert. You're just scared."

His jaw tightened. "And you're not scared of anything?"

"Not of this." I closed the remaining distance between us, close enough to feel the heat radiating off his body. "Not of you."

His hand moved, almost involuntarily, to brush against my exposed shoulder. The contact sent electricity through my patterns, igniting them into something fierce and crimson. His breath caught as he watched the lights dance beneath my skin, and I felt his walls cracking.

"Elona," he said, and it sounded like surrender.

I reached up and traced the lines of his face—the furrow between his brows, the crow's feet at the corners of his eyes, the slight stubble on his jaw. He closed his eyes at my touch, a shudder running through him. I felt his buried fantasies surface unbidden: images of my body beneath his, of his hands in my hair and my name on his lips. The force of them nearly knocked me back.

"Show me," I whispered against his mouth. "Show me everything you've been holding back."

His hands found my waist, tentative at first, then firmer as I pressed into him. His mouth found mine with a hunger that bordered on desperation, years of denial flooding through the cracks in his carefully maintained facade. I opened to him completely, letting my empathy wash over us both, merging his need with my own until I couldn't tell where his emotions ended and mine began.

The clearing held us in its silver light, the forest silent and watchful. His hands roamed my back, pulling me closer, and I felt the hard length of him pressing against my thigh with an intensity that made me gasp. My patterns blazed wild and bright, lighting us both in fire and crimson, and I knew—with a certainty that went deeper than thought—that this was only the beginning.

My skin felt like it was singing, every nerve ending tuned to a frequency I'd never known existed. Albert's hands were still splayed across my lower back, his breath coming in ragged bursts against my neck, and I could feel the tremor running through him—that delicious cocktail of disbelief and hunger that told me he was teetering on the edge of abandoning every inhibition he'd ever had.

"You have no idea," he murmured, his voice thick with something raw and unchained, "how long I've wanted to feel something like this."

"Show me."

He didn't need more encouragement than that. His hands slid down to my thighs, gripping them with a strength that surprised me, and then he was lifting me—effortlessly, like I weighed nothing at all. My dress caught on the motion, slipping up my thighs, and I wrapped my legs around his waist as he carried me toward the soft patch of moss near the ancient stones. The fabric bunched and tore free of its constraints, sliding away from my shoulders and falling somewhere behind us, leaving my chest bare against the cool night air.

His mouth found my breast before I could even catch my breath.

The sensation shot through me like lightning, my back arching into him as his lips closed around my nipple. His tongue circled with deliberate precision, and I threw back my head, the twin moons painting silver across my closed eyelids. The bioluminescent patterns across my chest flared bright and urgent, responding to every stroke of his tongue with colors I'd never seen before. I felt his satisfaction ripple through his mind, that primal masculine pleasure of making a woman gasp, and it only intensified my own arousal.

"Albert," I breathed, my fingers threading through his hair. "Please—"

He lowered me then, with such tenderness it made my chest ache. The moss was soft beneath my back, cool and yielding, and he followed me down, his body covering mine with a warmth that chased away the night's chill. His lips trailed from my breast down the curve of my ribs, lingering at the dip of my waist, and I felt each kiss like a brand. His hands moved with reverence over my hips, my thighs, mapping territory he seemed desperate to memorize.

"You're incredible," he whispered against my stomach, his voice reverent. "Every inch of you. Like something I dreamed up."

I felt his desire through the empathy that bound us together—not just physical hunger, but something deeper, a desperate need to connect. To be seen. To matter to someone after all these years of convincing himself he didn't.

His lips continued their path downward, slow and deliberate, and I felt my breath catch in anticipation. His hands parted my thighs with gentle authority, his mouth pressing hot kisses along the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. I was already slick with need, my body responding to him in ways that made my head spin. The patterns beneath my skin blazed trails of crimson and gold, lighting the darkness around us.

"Let me taste you," he said, and it wasn't a question.

My hands buried themselves in his hair, curling into the silver-streaked strands, and I pushed him deeper. His mouth found me like a man discovering water in a desert, his tongue delving into my folds with a hunger that bordered on worship. I cried out, muffling the sound with my own hand as his tongue circled my clit with devastating precision. The sensation rippled through me in waves, each one building on the last until I was arching off the moss, grinding against his mouth with abandon.

His grip on my thighs tightened as he worked me closer to the edge, his own arousal thrumming through our connection like a second heartbeat. I could feel how much he wanted this—wanted me—and it pushed me higher, faster. His tongue flicked and circled, his lips sucked gently, and my hands pressed his face deeper into my cunt as I rode the waves of pleasure he was creating.

The first climax hit me like a wave crashing against ancient rocks, tearing a moan from my throat that echoed through the clearing. He didn't Stop. His tongue kept working, coaxing me through the aftershocks, and before I could catch my breath he was building me toward another peak. My thighs trembled around his head, my fingers tangled so tightly in his hair I thought I might never let go.

"Albert—" His name broke from my lips like a prayer, like a confession. "Please, I can't—"

But I could. He made sure of that. His mouth was relentless, his hunger bottomless, and he brought me to a second orgasm that left stars bursting behind my eyes, my whole body convulsing against him as he drank me in. I was gasping, sobbing with pleasure, and still he continued.

By the third climax, I had lost all sense of where I ended and he began. The world had narrowed to the feel of his tongue, the heat of his breath, the exquisite pressure building and building until I shattered completely, crying out his name to the silent moons above. My body trembled for long moments afterward, his mouth finally softening against me, lips pressing gentle kisses to my oversensitized flesh as if in thanks.

He crawled up my body, his eyes dark with satisfaction and something that looked dangerously close to adoration. His lips found mine, and I tasted myself on him, felt his hardness pressing against my thigh with urgent insistence.

"Now," I whispered against his mouth, my hand sliding down to grip him through his trousers. "I need you now."

His breath hitched, his forehead dropping to rest against mine. "I'm not a young man anymore. I don't know if I can—"

I squeezed gently, feeling the impressive length of him straining against the fabric. "You can. I promise you can."

My fingers worked quickly at his belt, his buttons, and when I finally freed him from his trousers, I had to catch my breath. He was longer than I'd expected, thin but striking, the head flared and ready. For a moment I just held him, feeling the weight and heat of him in my palm, watching his face contort with barely restrained need.

He lowered himself over me, his body covering mine, and I guided him to my entrance. The first push was slow, deliberate, and I gasped as he filled me inch by aching inch. His control was remarkable, holding himself steady as my body adjusted to accommodate him. When he was fully buried inside me, he paused, his forehead against my shoulder, his breath ragged.

"Elona," he breathed against my skin. "You feel... I can't describe it. Like coming home."

I wrapped my legs around his waist and pulled him deeper, my own climax already beginning to stir again in response to the feel of him. His first thrust was tentative, almost shy, but my hips rose to meet him with eager encouragement.

"Don't hold back," I urged, letting my empathy flood through him, letting him feel exactly how much I wanted this. Wanted him. "I want to feel everything."

His rhythm was steady, almost gentle, each thrust measured and controlled. I could feel his discipline in every movement, that careful restraint that had become armor. But I wanted the man beneath it. I wanted the hunger I'd felt flickering through his thoughts all night.

"Albert," I breathed, my nails digging into his shoulders. "Harder. Please."

His eyes met mine, something wild stirring behind the blue. My leg slipped from his waist, and then his hand was there, guiding it upward. He lifted my leg over his shoulder, folding me nearly in half, and the new angle changed everything.

The head of him pressed against a place that made my vision blur. That slight inward curve, that flared rim, found a spot I hadn't known existed. I screamed, the sound raw and unashamed, echoing through the clearing. The bioluminescent patterns across my body erupted in fireworks of crimson and gold.

His hand found my breast, cupping it roughly, and I arched into his touch as he thrust deeper. That angle, that curve, hitting me perfectly with every stroke.

"Right there," I gasped. "Don't stop. Please don't stop."

He didn't. His hips found a rhythm that bordered on brutal, each thrust driving that flared head against my spot until I was sobbing with pleasure. His thumb circled my nipple, pinching gently, and my whole body clenched around him.

"Albert, I'm going to—"

He drove into me harder, burying himself to the root, and I came apart. My climax crashed through me like a tide breaking against rocks, my inner walls convulsing around him. He kept thrusting through it, that merciless angle never letting up, and I felt the world splinter around us. But even as my shudders began to ease, his rhythm didn't falter. His hand slid beneath my hip, guiding me, and I understood before the words formed.

He turned me onto my belly with a tenderness that belied the fierce hunger I felt through our connection. The moss was cool against my breasts, my cheek pressed against the soft earth as his hands found my hips and lifted me. My knees found purchase, my back arching instinctively, presenting myself to him in the oldest invitation.

His cock pressed against my slick entrance, the flared head teasing for just a moment before he pushed inside. The new angle was devastating. Deeper, impossibly deeper, reaching places his previous position couldn't touch. I screamed, my fingers clawing at the moss as he seated himself fully, my body clenching around him in a wave of fresh pleasure.

"Gods," I gasped, the word stolen from me by another orgasm that crashed through my body before I could prepare for it. My inner walls convulsed around him, milking him, and I felt his groan vibrate through every point where our bodies touched.

But he didn't stop. His hand slid around my hip, fingers finding my clit with unerring accuracy, and he began to thrust. Each stroke drove that curved head against my deepest spot, and his fingers worked in tight circles above, a devastating combination that left me senseless.

"Yes," I sobbed, pushing back against him, meeting each thrust with desperate need. "Don't you dare stop. Don't you ever stop."

His other hand gripped my shoulder, anchoring me as his pace quickened. I could feel his control fraying, feel the years of denial and loneliness pouring into every motion. He was lost in me, drowning in sensation, and I wanted to be his salvation.

He was lost in her, drowning in sensation, and she wanted to be his salvation.

She took his hand from her shoulder, threaded her fingers through his and squeezed, anchoring him. Then she let go and reached for her own breasts, cupping them from beneath, her nipples hard against her palms as she squeezed and rolled them between her fingers. The sensation doubled, tripled, feeding straight down into the place where he was driving into her.

"Yes," she gasped. "Gods, Albert, yes."

His rhythm broke open. The careful restraint she'd felt all night shattered like glass, and he thrust into her like a piston, hard and fast and relentless. The sound of it filled the clearing, skin slapping against skin, his hips hammering against her ass with a force that sent her forward and back in a rhythm of pure animal need. His balls slapped against her, wet and heavy, each impact a small shock that rippled through her.

"Yes," she screamed. "Harder, yes, harder."

He gave her harder. His fingers dug into her hips hard enough to bruise, pulling her back onto him with each desperate stroke. The flared head of him drove against her spot with brutal precision, that inward curve hitting the same perfect place every time. Her eyes rolled back. Her fingers twisted her nipples, pulling and pinching until her breasts ached with a pleasure that bordered on pain.

The orgasm rose in her like a tide, unstoppable and vast. She tried to warn him, tried to form words, but all that came out was his name, torn from her throat in a cry that scattered the night birds from the trees. Her body convulsed around him, her inner walls clenching so hard she felt him stutter in response, felt his control fray to threads.

But he didn't stop. He kept driving, kept pounding, and she came again before the first wave had finished, a second climax crashing over her before she could surface. Her knuckles went white against her breasts, her nails biting into her own skin as she screamed wordless pleasure into the dark. Every thrust drove her toward another peak, and another, and she was lost, drowning, grateful.

"Albert," she sobbed. "Albert, please, I can't take any more, I can't—"

He pulled her up against him instead of stopping. His chest pressed against her back, one arm banding across her ribs, the other hand sliding down to cover hers where it gripped her breast. His mouth found her neck, her ear, his breath ragged and hot against her skin.

"I've got you," he managed, the words barely a whisper. "Let go. I've got you."

He thrust up into her from behind, slower now, deeper, each stroke grinding against her spot with devastating precision. His hand joined hers, kneading her breast, his calloused thumb brushing her nipple in maddening circles. She felt his own climax building like a storm, felt it through their bond with terrifying clarity, and she knew he was barely holding on.

She let go.

The third orgasm tore through her like lightning splitting a tree, her whole body seizing, her cry swallowed by the forest. She felt him come undone with her, felt his cock pulse and flood inside her as he buried himself to the root, his groan a guttural sound that vibrated through his chest into her back. They hung there together, trembling, tangled, the twin moons watching from above.

For a long moment neither of them moved. Then his arms tightened around her, and he pulled her down gently onto the moss, turning them so she lay against his chest. His heart thundered against her shoulder blade. His hands, still shaking, cradled her belly with something almost reverent.

Through the fading haze she felt him, truly felt him, the way she'd been trained not to feel. Not just the pleasure, not just the release, but the raw and tender thing beneath it. The loneliness that had hollowed him out for years. The desperate, aching hope that this might mean something.

It startled her. She'd felt men's hunger before, their lust, their conquest. She'd never felt a man want her to stay.

"Albert," she said quietly.

He kissed the back of her neck, soft as a prayer. "I know," he murmured, his voice thick with wonder. "I know I'm just some old man you met in a bar. I know what this is."

She turned in his arms, facing him, her eyes searching his. The bioluminescent patterns across her skin had settled into something slow and violet, still pulsing, still alive.

"What is it, then?" she asked.

He looked at her for a long moment, and she felt the wall he'd built over decades crack open just enough for the truth to slip through.

"I don't know," he said. "But I don't want it to end with tonight."

She felt his fear behind the words. The certainty that she'd laugh, that she'd walk away, that she'd prove every bitter lesson his ex-wife had taught him. Her chest ached with the weight of it.

She reached up and touched his jaw. "Good," she said. "Because neither do I."

I moved first, shifting my weight carefully, and he followed me without waking. The moss cradled us as I rolled to my side, and I felt him slip deeper, felt the warmth of him settle against my thigh. His arm found its way under my neck, curling beneath my hair like he'd done it a hundred times before. His other hand came to rest on my breast, palm cupping the curve of it, his thumb brushing my nipple with a softness that made my breath catch.

His breathing slowed. Deepened. The tension bled out of his muscles in slow waves, and I lay there, utterly still, feeling him soften inside me without ever pulling away.

He was asleep.

I pressed closer, tucking my back against his chest, and his arm tightened around me even in sleep, like some instinct was holding on to me. The twin moons had shifted overhead, silver light pooling through the trees, and the forest had gone quiet around us. I could hear his heartbeat, steady and slow, no longer guarded. No longer afraid.

I let my senses drift toward him, the way I'd been taught never to do, and found his dreams.

They were warm. That was the first thing I noticed. Not the sharp-edged nightmares I'd expected from a man with his history, but something soft and golden. A sunlit kitchen. A woman's laughter that wasn't mine but could have been. Simple things. A hand held across a table. The smell of fresh bread. He dreamed of being wanted, of being seen, of coming home to someone who was still there.

My throat tightened. The patterns beneath my skin flickered from violet to something gentler, the colors I only ever showed when I was alone.

His thumb moved against my breast, slow and absent, a reflex from the dream. I felt his body respond faintly, felt the faint stirring of him inside me as his subconscious reached for the warmth of my skin. Not arousal, not quite. Just need. The same need I'd felt all night, the one he'd buried so deep he'd forgotten it was there.

I pressed my hips back just slightly, and he made a sound in his sleep, something soft and grateful. His arm tightened around me. His nose buried itself in my hair.

I closed my eyes and let myself feel it. The weight of his arm. The heat of his body. The impossible trust of a man who'd been betrayed sleeping with his whole hand wrapped around my heart without even knowing I could feel it.

The forest kept its watch. The moons kept their light. And I lay there in that clearing, pressed against a man I'd known for one night, and felt something shift inside me that I hadn't expected. Something that had nothing to do with lust or curiosity or the thrill of being wanted.

I wanted to stay.

That thought scared me more than his loneliness ever had.

I felt him stir behind me, his breathing changing, his body beginning to surface from sleep. His hand on my breast twitched, then stilled. His arm under my neck tightened just a fraction, and I heard him take in a breath, felt him register where he was, who he was holding, what was still joined between us.

"Elona," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep. "You're still here."

I turned just enough to look back at him. His eyes were barely open, dazed and wondering. His hand hadn't moved from my breast.

"I'm still here," I said.

He looked at me for a long moment. I felt him decide to believe it. Felt something loosen in his chest, some knot he'd been carrying for years, and I knew without him saying a word that no one had stayed before.

He pulled me closer, pressing a kiss to the top of my head, and I let myself be held. His body shifted inside mine, still there, still connected, and I felt his heartbeat slow again as sleep pulled him back under.

But this time I felt it clearly, through the fading haze of his dreams: the thought he'd had just before sleep took him. The one he didn't know I heard.

Maybe this time it's real.

I pressed closer to him, and I let myself believe it too.

His dreams shifted.

The golden kitchen dissolved into something else, something new. I felt it ripple through him like water finding a new channel. Morning light slanting through unfamiliar windows. The smell of brewing coffee, rich and sharp. A table set for two, and across from him, a flash of red hair that made his chest ache with wonder. Me. He dreamed of me sitting across from him, wrapped in one of his shirts, hair loose and tangled, reaching for his mug and stealing a sip just to see him smile.

I felt his lips curve against my hair.

The dream flowed onward. A path through woods much like the ones around us, but painted in daylight. His hand wrapped around mine, my smaller fingers laced through his. Leaves crunching underfoot. The sound of my laugh echoing ahead of him as I tugged him toward something I'd spotted in the trees. He dreamed of my hand in his and thought, with a quiet amazement, this is what it should have always been.

Heat pooled low in my belly, and not just from the dream.

His arm tightened around me. His hips shifted slightly, pressing against me from behind, and I felt him stir inside me, growing harder as the dream built. He dreamed of breakfast again, this time more vivid. The curve of my back as I stood at the stove. Him coming up behind me, arms wrapping around my waist, mouth finding the nape of my neck. The way I leaned back into him, trusting, melting.

His cock twitched, lengthening inside me, and I bit my lip to keep from moaning.

The dream deepened, his subconscious painting every detail with longing. The walk in the woods, yes, but also what came after. Hands on skin. The bed creaking under our combined weight. His name on my lips in the afternoon light, his face buried between my thighs. Everything we'd done tonight, repeated and expanded, but with the morning sun instead of moons. And beyond that, so much more. Down the corridor of his sleeping mind I saw months unfold: him learning my favorite music, me teaching him the names of Andorran flowers. His hands steadying mine on a fishing rod. My head on his shoulder as a fire crackled somewhere.

He thrust inside me in his sleep, a slow, unconscious roll of his hips, and I gasped against my fist.

His hand on my breast squeezed, his thumb circling my nipple, and the dream sharpened to a moment so vivid I felt it in my own body. Me bent over the kitchen counter, his hand in my hair, his cock driving into me from behind while coffee went cold in our mugs. The image pulsed through him with fierce, dreaming hunger, and I felt him lengthen further, felt the flared head pressing deeper into me with each unconscious motion.

I found his hand, laced my fingers through his, and pressed it to my heart.

He didn't wake. But his hips rolled again, slow and deep, and I moved with him, matching the rhythm of his dream. His breathing quickened, still even and sleeping, but his body knew what it wanted. I felt his dreaming self tumble into another kitchen scene, another morning, plate of eggs and toast between us, his bare feet warm under the table as they found mine. The sensation of belonging wrapped around him like a blanket. He'd forgotten what that felt like. He'd been cold for so long.

I rocked back against him, drawing him deeper, and I felt the dream surge.

Even in sleep his need grew, swollen and urgent inside me, and the dream shifted again. Him lifting me onto the table, sweeping the plates aside, the clatter of ceramic forgotten. My legs wrapped around his waist as he pressed into me, morning light catching the lines of his face. His fingers in my hair, his mouth on mine, and the thought, the simple impossible thought radiating through his sleeping mind. I could have this. I could have this every day.

Yes, I whispered into his dream, feeling it wrap around me like a second skin. Yes, you could.

His hips found a rhythm, slow and firm, and I thrust back to meet him, soft moans I couldn't contain. The moss cradled us. His hand left my breast, sliding down my ribs, my belly, settling low so his fingers could part my folds and find the spot where we joined. He touched me there in his sleep, swept his thumb across where he stretched me open, and the dream burned bright with everything he wanted to do to me in the light of day.

I came, silently, my mouth pressed against my own forearm, my body shuddering around him.

He followed in his dream, buried inside me, spilling into me on a kitchen table while birdsong filled the morning air. I felt the wet heat of his release flood me even as he slept, his hips pumping slow and deep, milking himself dry. His groan surfaced from his throat, soft and dreaming, and his arm tightened around me as he pulled me flush against his chest.

The dream settled after that. Softened. Became the sun through a curtain, a hand on a cheek, a whispered good morning.

I lay there, trembling and full of him, and felt the last pulses of his release fade into stillness. His heartbeat slowed against my back. His breathing deepened once more into true sleep. The moon had moved beyond the trees, silver light growing faint with the approach of dawn.

He grew soft inside me, but he never pulled away.

And I felt the shape of that future settle into his chest like a seed taking root. A seed I'd planted without meaning to. A life I'd shown him with my presence alone.

I pressed my hand over his where it lay curled against my belly.

Maybe this time it's real, his dream whispered one last time before sleep took him fully.

I held his hand tight.

Let it be, I whispered back. Let it be real.

The light came soft through the canopy, pale gold where the twins had faded to ghosts. I surfaced from sleep in stages, becoming aware of warmth first, then of lips.

Albert's mouth moved against the nape of my neck, slow and reverent, like he was memorizing the shape of my spine. The kisses trailed from one vertebra to the next, unhurried, unhurried, each one a small benediction. I lay still beneath the gentle siege, my breath shallow in my chest, and let myself feel it.

It felt like home.

That word startled me with its weight. I'd never applied it to a person before, only to places. But his lips on my skin, his arm cradling my waist, his body curved around mine in a cradle of warmth and the faint, familiar scent of him; it settled into my chest like a stone dropping into still water.

He kissed the spot behind my ear and I felt the small smile press into my skin.

I turned my head. His eyes were open, blue and soft with sleep, looking at me like I was something he'd conjured and couldn't quite believe needed no holding to keep.

"Good morning," I said.

"Good morning." His voice was rough from sleep. His hand on my waist flexed, drawing me slightly closer. "I have a cabin about a mile up this trail, if you would like to go with me."

He said it carefully, the way a man offers something fragile. I felt him brace himself against the word no before it had even formed. Felt the fear in his chest like a cold knot.

But beneath that, smaller and braver, I felt the hope.

I turned fully in his arms, facing him. The bioluminescent patterns across my skin stirred to something warm, something amber and slow, reflecting none of the conflict in my mind. He watched them shift, his eyes tracking the glow across my collarbone.

"What's in the cabin?" I asked.

He blinked, caught off guard. "I don't know. Me, mostly. A bed that's actually comfortable. Coffee. I make decent coffee."

I felt the truth beneath his words. A place he'd chosen after the divorce, an escape he'd built to be alone in. He was offering it to me, the only shelter he had, uncertain whether I'd want anything that small.

"Sounds better than moss," I said.

He almost smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "You might just want to think about it. I know it's been a long night and I'm not, I'm not trying to pressure you into anything. I just thought I'd offer, in case you wanted somewhere to, you know. Sleep properly. Or not."

"You know," I said, "you're very considerate for a man who was trying to escape me in the woods last night."

"Was I?"

"You walked faster."

He had. I'd felt it, the slight lengthening of his stride when I'd first fallen into step behind him. The panic, quickly swallowed. The slow resignation that he was not going to be able to outwalk me.

"I thought you were a ghost," he admitted. "When I first looked back. All that red hair and the way you moved. Thought I'd finally cracked."

"And now?"

He looked at me for a long moment, and I felt him choose his words with a carefulness that made my chest ache.

"Now I hope you're not."

I reached up and touched his jaw. The stubble scratched under my fingertips, and his eyes closed briefly at the contact, betraying how starved he was for it. For simple, uncomplicated touch with no edge to it.

"Show me this cabin," I said.

He was on his feet before I finished the sentence, holding out his hand. I took it and let him pull me up, the moss falling from my skin, the morning air cool against my bare breasts. The dress lay in ruins somewhere behind us, torn and forgotten. He noticed, and a flush crept up his neck.

"I might have clothes back there," he said. "But they'll be big on you."

I looked down at myself, then back at him. The bioluminescent patterns across my breasts flickered with amusement, a shade I'd learned to control years ago.

"I like your clothes," I said.

He laughed then. A real laugh, startled out of him, and I felt the knot in his chest loosen just a little. He picked up his shirt from where it had landed and held it open for me. It hung past my thighs when I slipped my arms in, the sleeves far too long, and I had to roll them up to free my hands. He watched me do it with something soft in his eyes.

"You look like you're wearing a tent," he said.

"Your tent. That's what matters."

He took my hand again, and we walked. The trail curved through the forest, the twin suns filtering through the canopy, and the trees that had felt watchful and strange by moonlight became ordinary in the day. Beautiful, but ordinary. Path of Whispers, the locals called it. A mile through soft earth and scattered leaves, and I matched his pace easily, his hand warm in mine.

He stole glances at me as we walked, quick and cautious, like he expected me to vanish if he looked too long. The patterns on my skin rippled beneath his shirt, slow and calm, and I saw him notice the way they shifted as we walked. Then his gaze moved to the trees ahead, and I felt him turn something over in his mind before he spoke.

"Will you stay for a while?" he asked. "After you see it? Or are you just walking through?"

The question was careful, but I heard the fear beneath it. The woman before me must have done a number on him. He was practically holding his breath for the blow.

"I don't have anywhere else to be," I said.

He squeezed my hand, and I felt his relief wash through him like a tide. He tried to hide it, kept his face neutral, but I felt it all the same. The loosening of his shoulders. The quiet wonder that I hadn't already left.

The cabin rose out of the trees at the trail's end. Log walls, smoke curling from the chimney, a porch with a single chair that faced the view of the lake. Simple. Quiet. A place a man went to be alone.

I stopped at the edge of the clearing, taking it in. Then I turned to him.

"You built this yourself?"

"Mostly." He shrugged, embarrassed. "Took me three years. Had to learn a lot of things I never expected to learn."

"Like what?"

"How to lay a foundation. How to patch a roof. How to survive your own company when that's all you have left."

He met my eyes. There was no self-pity in his voice, just fact. But I felt the weight of those three years, the loneliness that had built them, the walls he'd erected out of necessity and then simply never dismantled.

I walked up onto the porch and looked back at him.

"Show me inside," I said.

He climbed the steps to join me, and set his hand on the door. He paused there, his fingers resting on the handle, and looked at me with something raw and uncertain in his eyes.

"Once you cross this threshold," he said, "I don't think I'm going to want to let you leave. And I should tell you that, because you deserve to know what you're walking into."

I studied him. The silver threading through his hair. The careful, deliberate honesty of a man who'd learned exactly how much damage lies could do.

"That's all right," I said. "I don't have anywhere else to be."

He picked me up before I could take another step, his hands sliding under my knees, my arms finding their way around his neck. I let out a small, surprised sound that melted into something softer as he carried me across the threshold. The cabin wrapped around us, warm and close, smelling of wood smoke and old leather and him.

He kissed me before the door had even swung shut. His mouth found mine with that same hunger from the clearing, but there was something else in it now, something tender and searching. He shifted me in his arms, guiding my legs around his waist, and I felt him there, hard and ready, pressing against the place where we'd been joined all night. My body opened to the memory of him like a flower to the sun.

He walked us deeper into the cabin, and I barely registered the shape of it around us, the worn sofa, the bookshelves, the fireplace cold and dark. He moved with a purpose I could feel through our bond, and then the backs of his knees hit the bed. He sat down heavily, bouncing slightly on the mattress, and suddenly I was in his lap, straddling him, the weight of my body settling against his thighs.

His hands found my hips, steadying me. My palms pressed flat against his chest, feeling the quickened drum of his heart beneath my fingers. The morning light came through the window behind him, painting his face in gold, and his eyes never left mine.

"I want you," he said, his voice rough. "But you know that already."

I did. I'd felt it all night, every surge of it through the bond we'd unwittingly woven. But hearing him say it, with the sun on his face and his hands on my hips, made something in my chest tighten.

"Show me," I said.

He guided me up, just slightly, and I reached between us to take him in hand. He was already slick with the remnants of our night, and I felt him twitch against my palm as I aligned him with my entrance. I lowered myself slowly, inch by aching inch, feeling the flared head of him push past my folds and stretch me open in that familiar, devastating way. His breath caught. His fingers dug into the soft flesh of my hips.

I sank down until I was seated fully on him, his cock buried to the root inside me. We stayed there for a moment, connected, breathing together. His hand came up to cup my face, his thumb tracing the line of my cheekbone.

"You're so beautiful," he whispered. "I can't, I don't even have words for what you look like in this light."

I kissed him instead of answering. He kissed me back, deep and searching, and I began to move. My hips rolled against his in a slow, circling rhythm, drawing him in and out of me with deliberate, unhurried strokes. His hands slid down my back, under the shirt that hung loose on my shoulders, fingertips tracing the rippling patterns beneath my skin as they flushed from calm violet to something warmer.

He kissed me again, and this time I felt his tongue sweep against mine, tasted the coffee on his breath, the faint salt of his skin. The morning sun caught the dust motes drifting through the air around us, and I rode him in that golden light, the world narrowed to the heat of his body, the grip of his hands, the impossible tenderness in his gaze.

I pulled away. My forehead dropped to rest against his shoulder, my face burying itself in the crook of his neck. I breathed him in, wood smoke and sleep and the faint lingering scent of the bar's spilled ale. My hips kept moving, slow and relentless, grinding against him as his hands came up to cradle my back.

The words escaped before I could catch them.

"I think I'm falling in love with you, Albert."

The rhythm of my hips stuttered. My breath caught in my throat. I felt him go still beneath me, felt the shock ripple through him, felt the fragile hope that surged up behind it before he had time to guard himself. His hands tightened on my back. His voice, when it came, was barely a whisper.

"Elona. Look at me."

I didn't want to. I'd revealed too much, spilled my heart all over his cabin floor before we'd even had coffee. But his hands moved to my face, gentle and insistent, tilting my chin up until I had no choice but to meet his eyes.

They were wet. Not with tears, not quite, but shining with something I couldn't name. The morning light caught them and turned them to glass.

"You barely know me," he said. "One night. A walk in the woods. I'm old enough to be your father and twice as broken. You can't mean that."

"I just said it, didn't I?"

"That's not the same thing."

I held his gaze, refusing to look away. The patterns beneath my skin had settled into a steady, pulsing crimson, the color I'd only ever shown when I was alone. I let him see it. I let him see all of it.

"I'm a telepath," I said. "I've been feeling everything you've felt since I walked out of that bar behind you. The loneliness. The fear. The way you tried to convince yourself I was too good to want you back." I reached up and touched his face, felt the roughness of his jaw under my palm. "I know you better than you think, Albert. And I've never said that to anyone before."

He stared at me. The silence stretched between us, filled only with the sound of his breathing, the creak of the bed beneath us, the distant call of a morning bird through the window.

Then his hands were in my hair, pulling me to him, and he kissed me like he was drowning.
