Chapter 3: The Hallway Vigil

The walk to the guest room felt longer than it was, the darkened hallway swallowing the faint orange glow from the living room. My heart was still doing a slow, heavy thump against my ribs.Parity.Force. The words cycled in my head, a useless, mesmerizing mantra.I just needed to sleep. To reset. Tomorrow we’d fish, drink beer, and this… this fissure in my understanding of the world would seal back over with normalcy.

My hand was on the cool brass knob of my door when I heard it.

A muffled, rhythmic sound from behind Chris’s door, just a few feet away. Not a cough. Not a turn in bed.A slow, wet slide. A sharp, hissed intake of breath.I froze. My whole body locked, ears straining. There was a soft grunt, low and guttural, followed by another slick, deliberate stroke. The sound was unmistakable, utterly primal. He was hard at work in there, chasing a feeling.

Heat flooded my gut, a straight-shot chemical reaction that bypassed every circuit of my brain. My cock, half-soft in my sweats, thickened and hardened in an instant, a painful, urgent swell against the loose fabric.I should have moved. I should have turned the knob, slipped into my room, and buried my head under a pillow.I didn’t.

I leaned my forehead against the cool wood of my own doorframe, my eyes fixed on the thin line of light under his door. Each rough, slick sound was a direct trigger. My hand moved of its own volition, dipping under the waistband of my sweatpants, wrapping around my own aching length. I was already leaking. I used it, spreading the wetness, setting a pace that matched his from the other side of the wall.It was a grotesque, silent duet. His breath hitched; I bit my own lip to stay quiet. The sound of his fist moving faster, the wet friction growing more frantic, drove me on. My mind scrambled for an anchor and found only fractured, invasive images: Chris’s back in the firelight, the defined ridges of his stomach, his own large hand doing this, the parity of it. The idea of strength meeting strength, of that clean, uncomplicated power exchange he’d described, wasn’t abstract anymore. It was here, in the muffled proof of it vibrating through the wall.My breaths came in shallow gasps. I was close, too fast, spurred on by the sheer forbidden shock of it. I pressed my forehead harder into the wood, the grain digging into my skin. A low, choked moan escaped from his room, a sound of pure release, followed by a fading, stuttering rhythm.

That was all it took.My spine arched, a violent, silent shudder rippling through me. I came in thick, helpless pulses onto the worn floorboards, my entire body rigid with a pleasure so intense it bordered on pain. The climax was a wave of blinding whiteness, followed immediately by a crushing, vacuum-like silence. The hallway was dead quiet. My heart hammered against my ribs like it wanted out. Slowly, I pulled my hand free, wiping it clumsily on my sweatpants. I stared at the small, dark pool on the floor, a vile testament to my privacy.

Shame, cold and sickening, washed over me.What the fuck had I just done? Eavesdropping.Getting off on my best friend. My male best friend. I felt fractured, a stranger in my own skin.A floorboard creaked inside his room. The sound of him moving, maybe heading to the attached bathroom.Panic galvanized me. I fumbled with my door, shoved it open, and slipped inside, closing it behind me with the softest click imaginable. I stood there in the dark, back against the door, listening. The bathroom sink ran for a minute, then stopped.I didn’t move. I just stood there in the absolute black, the scent of my own release still on me, the ghost of his sounds etched into my skull. The clean, logical world I knew was gone. In its place was this dark, humming hallway, and the terrifying understanding that the wanting hadn’t been an abstract curiosity. It had a taste. And I’d just swallowed it whole.
