Chapter 1: Introduction

The packing tape screamed as Kayla ripped it off the dispenser, her mouth set in a firm line. She stuffed her clothes into the box, already overflowing with her life’s detritus. Every item she touched seemed to have a memory attached—a laugh shared, a touch exchanged. She shoved them all in, not caring if they wrinkled or tore. She was done with Eric, done with their sickeningly sweet, cloying relationship.

The floor creaked under Eric’s weight as he stepped into the room. She hadn’t heard him come in, but she didn’t need to see him to know it was him.

The scent of his cologne wafted through the air, a mix of wood and spice that had once sent shivers down her spine. Now, it just made her stomach churn.

“Kayla, please,” he said, his voice low and pleading. “Can we just talk about this?”

She didn’t turn to face him, just continued stuffing her clothes into the box. “What’s there to talk about, Eric? You cheated, and a year on I don't ever know if I'll get over that. You've hated me for the last 3 weeks. Barely looked at me and scarcely touched me. Do you know what that does to me?"

He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her.

She could feel his gaze, intense and hungry, like it always was. It used to make her body sing, but now it just made her skin crawl. "I'm sorry, Kayla. I never meant to hurt you."

She finally looked up, her eyes flashing with anger and pain. "Sorry doesn't cut it, Eric. Not anymore. You can't just apologize and expect everything to be okay. We're not okay."

He ran a hand through his short, sandy blonde hair, a gesture she knew all too well. It was his tell, the sign that he was frustrated or upset. "I know we're not okay.

That's why I'm here," Eric said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm not giving up on us, Kayla. I can't."

Kayla sighed, leaning back against the box she'd been packing. The cardboard dug into her back, but she didn't care. She looked at Eric, really looked at him, taking in his deep blue eyes, the lines of worry etched around them, the way his muscles strained against his t-shirt. He was still so handsome, so familiar. But there was something else there too, something she couldn't quite put her finger on.

A desperation, perhaps, or a need she didn't want to acknowledge.

"Why not, Eric?" she asked, her voice softer now. "Why can't you give up on us?"

He moved closer, close enough that she could see the flecks of gold in his deep blue eyes. "Because I love you, Kayla. I'm not saying we don't have problems, because we do. But I can't just walk away from this. From us."

She looked away, her gaze landing on a painting she'd done, a splash of vibrant colors that represented the chaos of their relationship. "You walked away once before, Eric.

When you cheated," Kayla whispered, her eyes filled with unshed tears. "You walked away from us then. Why should I believe you won't do it again?"

Eric flinched, as if her words were a physical blow. "I know I did, and I'll never be able to take that back. But I was scared, Kayla. Scared of how much I loved you, of how much you needed me. I was afraid of letting you down, of not being enough."

Kayla scoffed, shaking her head. "You think cheating made you enough?
