Chapter 1: Bare and Betrayed
The fluorescent lights buzzed like angry wasps overhead, casting a sterile, unforgiving glow on the cracked linoleum floor. The air in the university gym locker room was thick with the smell of chlorine and old disinfectant, a cold, chemical scent that did nothing to mask the raw vulnerability hanging in the space.
Jenna Hartwell stared down at her own body, her mind struggling to catch up.Her long blonde hair fell over her shoulders, but it offered no cover. Her gaze traveled from the familiar curves of her full breasts, down past the flat plane of her stomach, to the exposed triangle of pubic hair below. A cold draft from a vent licked across her skin, raising goosebumps. She was sitting on a hard, sweat-stained wooden bench, wearing nothing but the white athletic socks on her feet. Her eyes darted to the side. A large, wheeled laundry bin sat by the door, piled high with a tangled rainbow of bras and panties. Their clothes. Her burgundy lace set was probably buried in there somewhere.
“What the hell is going on?” Her voice came out smaller than she intended, trembling at the edges.
Next to her, Mia Delgado sat with her dark curls a wild frame around her tense face. Her lean, muscular frame was rigid, her legs crossed so tightly her thighs were white with pressure. She wasn’t looking at Jenna; she was staring at a point on the opposite wall, her brown eyes wide with a resigned focus.“The coach, Mr. Thompson, told us we had to strip for our physicals,” Mia said, her voice unnaturally calm. “But I didn’t think he meant everything!”
Jenna’s head snapped towards the bin. “I thought he was joking too, but look at that laundry bin over there headed for the laundry room. We will never get our underwear back now!” A hot wave of panic flushed up her chest and neck. Instinctively, she covered her crotch with her hands, her elbows brushing against the sides of her breasts, which felt impossibly heavy and exposed. She looked around nervously. The cavernous room had other benches.Other girls. Some sat like statues, eyes fixed on the floor. A few had their arms crossed over their chests. All of them were just as naked.“Isn’t the coach a man? How is he going to examine us like this?” Her big round breasts bounced with the slight shudder of her breath, and despite her hands, the front of her crotch was exposed to the room. The reality of it was a physical blow. “And our parents signed us up for this?”
Mia finally looked at her, a flicker of something like pity crossing her features before it was swallowed by her own stark embarrassment. She uncrossed and re-crossed her legs, a futile gesture. “The form said he could examine us however he saw fit,” she recited, as if from memory, “and that we had to follow his instructions exactly, or we’d be kicked off the team.”
Jenna’s throat tightened. The pre-season paperwork. She’d signed it without a second thought, a blur of consent forms and insurance waivers. Her mom had just handed her the pen. “What else did it say?”
Mia let out a slow breath, her own gaze drifting down to her body with a mix of embarrassment and resignation. “It said he would examine our breasts and our vaginas,” she murmured, the clinical words sounding grotesque in the humid air. “To make sure we were healthy enough to play sports.”
The color drained from Jenna’s face, then rushed back in a burning crimson wave. The fine print. It was always in the fine print. “And our parents just signed that?”
Shaking her head, Mia looked toward the heavy metal door that led to the gym offices. “I guess they didn’t read the fine print.”
Silence descended between them, filled only by the oppressive buzz of the lights and the soft, muffled sniffle from a girl a few benches down. Jenna’s mind raced, scrambling for a ledge to grab onto. This was wrong. This had to be wrong. But the evidence was all around her, in the pile of discarded underwear, in the naked shoulders hunched against the cold, in the stark, unavoidable truth of her own bare skin.A sports physical. She’d had them before. The turn-your-head-and-cough, the stethoscope on your back. Not this. Never this. Her hands felt useless where they were. Covering one part just highlighted the exposure of everything else. She let them fall to her sides, palms slapping against the cold, polished wood of the bench. The surrender felt profound and sickening.Mia shifted beside her. “They’re calling us in alphabetical order.Delgado.Hartwell. We’ll be soon.”
“How can you be so calm?” Jenna whispered, her voice cracking.
“I’m not,” Mia said flatly, her knuckles white where she gripped the edge of the bench. “I’m just... reading the room. What’s our option?Run out there like this? Cause a scene? They have our clothes. They have the forms.”
The heavy metal door groaned open.Every head in the room lifted. A student assistant, a girl they recognized from a kinesiology class, stood in the doorway. She didn’t meet anyone’s eyes. She held a clipboard.“Delgado,” she called out, her voice echoing in the tiled space.
Mia closed her eyes for a second. Then she stood up, her body a tense sculpture of lean muscle under the cruel light. She didn’t try to cover herself. She just walked, the sound of her socked feet on the floor a soft, shuffling beat, toward the door that swallowed her whole.Jenna was alone.More alone than she’d ever felt. She looked down at her body one more time, a stranger’s body in this horrible, bright room. She listened to the distant thump of basketballs from a far-off court, the mundane sound of a normal day continuing just outside. She wrapped her arms around her stomach, hunching forward, trying to make herself small. The door opened again too soon. The assistant’s face appeared. “Hartwell.”
The word was a verdict.Jenna stood. The air felt colder on her skin, raising every hair. She followed the path Mia had taken, past the benches of silent, watching girls, past the mountain of fabric in the bin, toward the gleaming steel handle of the door.
She focused on the white socks on her feet, one in front of the other, a tiny beacon of normalcy in the naked nightmare.
