Chapter 2: The Spilled Coffee
The words hung in the air, a confession wrapped in a whisper. Everywhere that I can’t name.
John went utterly still. The game evaporated. The pretense of tickling dissolved, leaving only the raw truth of their position: her body soft and pliant beneath him, her wrists captive in his gentle grip, her face tilted up, offering. Her eyes were dark pools, all playful challenge gone, replaced by a waiting, liquid intensity.
He could feel the frantic drum of her pulse against his palm where it held her hands to her chest. Or maybe it was his own heart shaking his ribs.
Slowly, so slowly, he lowered his face back to the curve where her neck met her shoulder. He didn’t scrape this time. He let the rough, wool-soft texture of his beard simply rest there, a presence. He inhaled, and her scent—peach soap, warm skin, and something uniquely, fundamentally her—flooded his senses. He felt her shudder, a full-body tremor that had nothing to do with tickling.
A sound escaped her, a low, wanting hum in the back of her throat.
It was the permission he hadn’t known he was waiting for.
He released her wrists. His hands, large and capable, slid down her sides, over the thin cotton, finding the hem of the white t-shirt where it had ridden up during their struggle. His thumbs brushed the bare, hot skin of her hips. She gasped, her own hands coming up to clutch at his biceps, her fingers digging into the hard muscle there.
He looked at her then, his face inches above hers. Her lips were parted, her breathing ragged. He searched her face for any doubt, any flicker of the teenage girl she was. He saw only a woman, aching and sure.
“Katie,” he said, her name a rough sacrament.
“Don’t stop,” she breathed, and arched her hips up off the couch, a silent, unmistakable plea.
His hands slid under the bunched fabric. He pushed it up, revealing the smooth plane of her stomach, the gentle swell of her navel, the lower curves of her breasts. He kept going, his knuckles brushing her skin, until the shirt was gathered under her arms. She lay bare before him in the lamplight, her skin glowing, her chest rising and falling fast.
He let his gaze travel down, over the generous swell of her breasts, the peaked, tight rosiness of her nipples, the delicious curve of her waist, to the thatch of dark, neat curls at the junction of her thighs. She was glistening there, already wet for him, the evidence of her wanting clear in the soft, golden light.
The sight punched the air from his lungs. He’d imagined, fantasized, tortured himself with glimpses and outlines. This reality was a thousand times more potent.
He lowered his head, not to her mouth, but down her body. He placed a hot, open-mouthed kiss just below her navel. She jerked, a sharp cry escaping her. He nuzzled lower, his beard dragging through the soft curls, and she whimpered, her hands flying to his hair, not to push him away but to clutch him closer.
He looked up the length of her body. Her head was thrown back, eyes screwed shut, lips bitten red.
“Does this,” he murmured, his voice a dark rasp against her most intimate skin, “tickle?”
Before she could answer, he did it. He leaned in and rubbed the coarse, thick hair of his moustache and beard directly, firmly, against her exposed, swollen clit.
The sound she made was ripped from somewhere deep. It wasn’t a laugh. It was a guttural, desperate moan that seemed to shake the very foundations of the quiet house. Her hips came off the couch in a sharp, involuntary grind, seeking more pressure, more of that delicious, rough friction.
He did it again, a slow, deliberate side-to-side abrasion. She cried out, her body bowing, her thighs falling open wider in surrender. He could feel her heat, smell her arousal, a musky, sweet perfume that drove every rational thought from his head. He alternated—the softness of his lips, the shocking roughness of his facial hair, the flat of his tongue for a slow, wet lick.
“John… please…” she begged, the word fragmented.
He was beyond words now. The last thread of his restraint, the final wall of his resistance, crumbled to dust. He replaced his beard with his mouth, sucking her clit gently, then not so gently, as his hands slid under her ass, lifting her to him. She was saying his name over and over, a mantra, her fingers tangled in his hair, guiding him, urging him on.
He felt powerful and utterly enslaved. This was what she’d wanted. What he’d craved. The mature, dominant passion she’d teased him for. He gave it to her, not with the frantic energy of a boy, but with the controlled, devastating focus of a man who knew how to take his time, how to build an ache into a crisis.
He worked her with his mouth and his beard until her legs began to shake, her moans climbing into a higher, tighter register. He slipped a finger inside her, then two, and she was so tight, so impossibly wet and hot. She clenched around him, her internal muscles fluttering.
“I’m… I’m going to…” she choked out, her body tensing like a drawn bowstring.
He didn’t let up. He drove her over the edge with a final, insistent stroke of his tongue and a deep curl of his fingers.
She came with a shattered cry, her body convulsing in his hands, her back arching off the leather. He held her through it, gentling his mouth, kissing her through the tremors as they slowly, slowly subsided into aftershocks. She collapsed back onto the couch, boneless, her chest heaving, a sheen of sweat making her skin glow.
For a long moment, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing and the distant hum of the television, still on the football channel.
John rested his forehead against her inner thigh, trying to regain some semblance of composure. His own need was a throbbing, painful ache in his pants, but for now, it was a distant thing. The taste of her was on his lips, her scent was in his nose. There was no going back from this. The line was not just crossed; it was obliterated.
He lifted his head. Her eyes were open now, hazy and sated, watching him. A slow, utterly triumphant smile spread across her swollen lips.
He shifted, moving up her body, bracing himself on his forearms above her. He looked down at her, at her wrecked and beautiful face, at her breasts still exposed, the shirt a rumpled halo around her shoulders.
“Okay?” he asked, his voice gravel.
“Okay,” she whispered, reaching up to trace the line of his jaw, his beard damp from her. “That… wasn’t tickling.”
“No,” he agreed. “It wasn’t.”
She shifted beneath him, her thigh brushing against the hard, urgent bulge in his pants. A fresh spark of hunger ignited in her eyes. Her hand slid down his chest, over the taut muscle of his stomach, her fingers skimming the waistband of his pants. She hooked her thumbs in the elastic.
“My turn,” she said, and there was no teasing left in her voice. Only want.
