Chapter 3: The First Lesson
The unnatural cold finally receded, leaving Gerry trembling in Amanda’s slight frame. Outside, rain lashed the window like frantic fingers. Inside, silence stretched, thick and suffocating. Amanda stared at her own hands – Gerry’s hands, strong and calloused where hers were smooth – clenching and unclenching them. The echo of the thunder rattled the cheap blinds.
"We're stuck," Gerry whispered, Amanda’s voice thick with a despair Amanda had never heard in it before. He sagged onto the edge of the bed, the movement awkward, unfamiliar. The skirt rode up Amanda’s thighs, and Gerry yanked it down violently, a flush creeping up Amanda’s neck. "Jesus, this skirt." He fumbled with the hem again. "And this... everything. How do you stand it?"
Amanda paced, Gerry’s long legs eating up the cramped space. Three strides from desk to fridge. Pivot. The unfamiliar heavy weight of her new body felt cumbersome, powerful. She stopped, facing Gerry, who looked impossibly small and lost while inhabiting her vibrant form. "We can't stay holed up forever. Classes on Monday. Your econ seminar. My phys chem lab." Her own voice, coming from Gerry’s throat, sounded strange – deeper, flatter. She cleared it, trying to soften the edges. "People will notice Gerry O’Connell walking like he’s got a stick up his ass and Amanda Riley suddenly trying to bench-press a Buick."
Gerry snorted, a weak female imitation of his usual sarcasm. "Yeah, because that’s the biggest giveaway." He gestured helplessly at Amanda’s body, poking the gap between his breasts. "Look at me! How am I supposed to... be you? Walk into Lit Comp? Order coffee? Flirt with the male waiter?"
"By learning," Amanda stated, crossing Gerry’s arms. The movement felt instinctively protective. "Fast. Starting now." She pointed to the full-length mirror tacked precariously to the back of the dorm room door. "Up."
Gerry groaned, burying Amanda’s face in her hands. "Do we have to?"
"Yes." Amanda’s tone brooked no argument. She remembered Thorne’s predatory interest. The urge to hide was overwhelming, but hiding meant losing control. "Stand in front of it."
Reluctantly, Gerry shuffled to the mirror. Seeing Amanda’s reflection move with such jarring hesitation was profoundly unsettling. The blonde hair hung lankly around her shoulders instead of its usual bounce. The bright blue eyes held pure panic, not Amanda’s characteristic warmth. Her posture was slumped, defensive.
"Okay," Amanda began, positioning herself beside him, studying both reflections – Gerry’s lean frame radiating tense determination, her own form radiating abject misery. "First, posture. You’re hunching. Like you’re trying to disappear. Don’t." She gently placed a hand on Gerry’s back, between Amanda’s shoulder blades. The contact made them both flinch slightly, the residual chill still faintly present. "Stand tall. Shoulders back. Not rigid. Just… present."
Gerry straightened fractionally. It looked unnatural, forced. "Feels… exposed."
"It is," Amanda admitted bluntly. "Get used to it. Now, walking." She demonstrated, taking a few steps across the small space in Gerry’s body. Her own stride felt clumsy, too long. "Your legs are shorter now. Mine are longer. Don’t lumber. Think… lighter. Move more from the hips." She paused, searching for the right words. "Not a strut. Just… glide. Like you’re balancing something fragile." She demonstrated again, trying to shorten Gerry’s stride, soften the impact.
Gerry attempted a step. It was a stiff, stilted shuffle. He winced. "This feels ridiculous. And… stuff keeps moving." He gestured vaguely towards Amanda’s chest, his cheeks flushing crimson. "It’s… distracting."
Amanda sighed, running Gerry’s hand through Gerry’s hair."Yeah. The center of gravity is different for women, and the… assets are hard to forget." She fought down a wave of profound awkwardness. Teaching Gerry how to inhabit her female body felt like the weirdest, most intimate violation imaginable.
"You need a better bra than that flimsy camisole top offers. Support minimizes the bounce. Trust me." She moved to Amanda’s dresser, rummaging through a drawer. The scent of lavender detergent wafted up. She pulled out a sturdy underwire bra. "This one. It’s structured."
Gerry stared at it like it was a live grenade. "You want me to… put that on? Now?"
"If you want to walk without feeling like you’re chest juggling," Amanda retorted, tossing it to him. "It’s just fabric and hooks. Front clasp. Easier for a new woman like you." She turned away, giving him a shred of privacy, focusing intently on the rain-streaked window. Behind her, she heard clumsy fumbling, muttered curses ("Which way? Christ, it’s like a puzzle! How do I get them in the cups?"), and the sharp click of the clasp.
Gerry cleared Amanda’s throat."Okay. Done." His voice was tight.
Amanda turned back. The bra helped, providing lift and stability Amanda usually took for granted. Gerry stood slightly taller, less hunched. "Better?" she asked.
"A bit," Gerry admitted grudgingly. "Still feels… alien. Constricting."
"Welcome to womanhood," Amanda said dryly. "Now, walk again."
This time, the movement was marginally smoother. Less top-heavy wobble. Still awkward, but not painfully so. Gerry reached the other side of the room, turned, and managed not to trip. A flicker of surprise crossed Amanda’s face, seeing her body walk around in a bra without her inside..
"Okay," Amanda conceded. "Progress. Now, voice." She pointed at Gerry’s throat. "You sound terrified. And scratchy. Mine doesn’t sound like that."
"I am terrified!" Gerry shot back, Amanda’s voice rising slightly. "My voice sounds like a scared pigeon trapped in a tin can!"
"Relax your throat," Amanda instructed, ignoring the panic. She placed Gerry’s fingers lightly on Amanda’s neck. "Feel? Less tension. Soften it. Think higher pitch, but naturally. Don’t force a deeper voice. Just… lift it." She demonstrated, forcing Gerry’s voice into a lighter, more melodic register. "See? Like this. Not a cartoon voice. Just… Amanda."
Gerry tried. "H-hello?" It came out breathy, uncertain. He tried again. "Hello." Slightly stronger. Less rasp. Still Amanda’s voice, but filtered through Gerry’s raw nerves.
"Better," Amanda encouraged. "Now, inflection. You sound flat. Mine’s expressive." She launched into a quick, casual sentence: "God, this storm is insane, right? Hope it clears before the library closes." Her tone (using Gerry’s voice) was surprisingly adept – warm, engaging, punctuated with little rises and falls.
Gerry stared, impressed despite himself. "How…?"
"Years of practice," Amanda shrugged Gerry’s shoulders. "Talking to professors, friends, creeps at parties… other women and girls... You learn modulation. Now you. Say something normal."
Gerry took a breath. "Umm… Did you finish the reading for Lit Comp?" It came out monotone, robotic.
"Inflection!" Amanda corrected sharply. "Not ‘Lit Comp.’ ‘Lit Comp???’ Like it’s a question, or a shared burden. Put some feeling into it, man!"
Gerry scowled Amanda’s face. "Did you finish the goddamn reading for Lit Comp?" It dripped with sarcasm, Amanda’s features twisting into an unfamiliar grimace.
Amanda rolled Gerry’s eyes. She chuckled. "Too much feeling. Dial it back. Like you actually care about the answer."
Gerry sighed, closing Amanda’s eyes for a moment. When he opened them, he tried again, forcing warmth Amanda usually radiated naturally. "Hey… did you get through the Lit Comp reading? That Woolf passage was brutal." It was hesitant, slightly stiff, but recognizably closer to Amanda’s cadence.
"Yes!" Amanda grinned Gerry’s grin, a genuine spark of relief cutting through the dread. "Exactly like that!"
A tentative, almost-smile touched Amanda’s lips. It looked strange on Gerry, fragile."Okay. Okay, maybe… maybe I can fake it." He looked down at Amanda’s hands, twisting the unfamiliar ring on her finger. "What about… everything else? The stares? The guys? How do you… handle that?"
Amanda’s momentary triumph faded. She leaned Gerry’s hips against the desk, crossing Gerry’s arms again. This was the hard part. "You don’t really ‘handle’ it," she admitted, her borrowed voice low. "You navigate it. You deflect it. You ignore it when you can. You get good at reading intentions." She met Gerry in Amanda’s eyes in the mirror. "You learn where it’s safe to look friendly and where smiling is an invitation you don’t want to give. You carry keys between your knuckles while walking at night. You calculate exits in crowded rooms." She paused, the weight of it settling heavily. "It’s exhausting. And sometimes… sometimes it feels like armor you never get to take off. And I don't want to get into the occasional gropers, men who think that a tight outfit means you want them to touch you with a breast or ass squeeze."
Gerry absorbed this, Amanda’s face paling slightly. "I… I didn’t realize. I mean, I knew it happened, but…" He trailed off, looking at Amanda’s reflection with a new, dawning horror. "Christ, Amanda. How do you breathe?"
"You just do," Amanda said simply. She pushed off the desk. "And right now, you have to breathe. And walk. And talk. Like me." She gestured towards the door. "Let’s try navigating the hall, just to the bathroom and back. Put my heels back on. High heels mean smaller steps.
Gerry nodded, taking a deep breath that lifted Amanda’s chest. He squared Amanda’s shoulders consciously, adjusted the strap of the bra digging into her skin, and took a tentative step towards the door. Then another. Still not Amanda’s effortless glide, but less like a robot learning to walk. He reached for the doorknob.
A sharp, authoritative knock rattled the thin wood. Loud. Insistent.
Gerry froze, Amanda’s eyes widening in panic. He shot a terrified look back at Amanda.
Amanda’s mind raced. Thorne? Campus security? Jen from down the hall? They weren't ready. Gerry looked like a deer in headlights inhabiting her body. She hissed, Gerry’s voice urgent and low, "Answer it! Be me!"
Gerry swallowed hard. His hand trembled on the knob. He took another shaky breath, visibly gathering Amanda’s scattered composure. He pasted on a smile that didn't quite reach Amanda’s eyes, softened his shoulders, and lifted his chin. He pulled the door open just a crack, blocking the view inside with Amanda’s body.
Amanda held her breath (Gerry’s breath), muscles coiled, ready for anything.
A tall student stood there. The young man stared ar Gerry's tits, moved down to his long legs, and back up to his pretty face. His gruff voice floated in. "Package for Riley. Amanda Riley. Needs a signature."
The gruff voice hung in the air like stale smoke. Gerry, trapped in Amanda’s body behind the cracked door, flinched. Amanda, rooted in Gerry’s frame near the desk, felt her borrowed heart hammer against ribs that weren't hers. Package? Now? Panic, cold and sharp, sliced through her. Who knew Amanda Riley was expecting anything? Thorne?
"Uh... yeah," Gerry managed, forcing Amanda’s voice into a higher, breathier register than usual. It sounded thin, strained. "Thanks." He started to push the door closed.
"Need your signature now, sweetheart," the delivery guy insisted, his tone impatient, leaning slightly into the gap. His eyes, Amanda noticed with a jolt from across the room, dropped instinctively, lingering for a fraction too long on the neckline of Gerry’s borrowed top – Gerry’s borrowed chest. The familiar, unwelcome prickle of being visually dissected crawled over Amanda’s skin, even though it was Gerry currently wearing it. "Dispatcher's breathing down my neck. Rain’s making everyone pissy."
Gerry froze. Amanda saw the panic flare in her own blue eyes staring back at her from the doorway. He hadn't mastered the effortless deflection yet. "Okay! Okay, just... gimme a sec!" Gerry squeaked, slamming the door shut harder than intended. He whirled, pressing Amanda’s back against the thin wood, breathing fast. "Oh god, oh god. He looked... he looked right at..." Gerry gestured helplessly, frantically, towards his borrowed chest. "What do I do?"
"Guys will do that. Sign the damn thing and get rid of him!" Amanda hissed, Gerry’s voice low and urgent. She grabbed a hoodie off the back of Amanda’s desk chair and thrust it at him. "Put this on. Zip it up. Less...visual." The intimacy of handing Gerry clothing for her own body was bizarre, jarring.
Gerry fumbled with the hoodie, his movements jerky. He struggled to pull it over Amanda’s head, momentarily blinded. The underwire bra Amanda had insisted he wear dug sharply into his ribs as he wrestled the fabric down. He hissed, instinctively reaching under the hoodie to yank at the offending strap. He adjusts bra. The gesture was clumsy, frustrated, utterly foreign to Amanda’s usual grace. Seeing her own hands perform that awkward, intimate adjustment sent a wave of profound dislocation through Amanda. It was her body, but the movement was all Gerry – male, uncomfortable, invading her privacy in the most visceral way.
"Stop fidgeting!" Amanda snapped, the harshness surprising even her. "Just go! Walk like I showed you. Shoulders back. Short steps. Glide, don't stomp. And smile. Polite, distant." She shoved Gerry’s wallet – her wallet – into Amanda’s hand. "Go!"
Taking a shuddering breath, Gerry pulled the hoodie zipper up to his chin, hiding the curves beneath. He forced Amanda’s shoulders down, lifted her chin. The smile he plastered on looked brittle, like cheap plastic. He opened the door again, stepping fully into the hallway’s harsh fluorescent light. Amanda hovered just inside, peering through the narrow gap, Gerry’s taller frame giving her a clear view.
The delivery guy, a burly man in a damp uniform, held a small, nondescript box and a digital pad. His eyes flickered over Gerry-in-Amanda again, lingering slightly despite the hoodie. "Name?" he grunted, thrusting the pad forward.
"Amanda Riley," Gerry said, aiming for confident but landing somewhere near terrified chirp. He took the stylus, fingers trembling visibly. Amanda cringed. Her signature, usually a looping, confident scrawl, came out shaky and spidery on the screen.
"Rough night?" the guy asked, a leer creeping into his voice as Gerry handed back the pad. His gaze dropped pointedly to Gerry’s borrowed hips, then back up. "Looks like you could use some sleep, honey."
Gerry froze again, Amanda’s face flushing crimson. He opened Amanda’s mouth, then closed it, utterly lost. The practiced deflection Amanda would have deployed – the icy stare, the clipped "Have a nice day" – evaporated in his panic. He just stood there, feeling exposed.
Amanda acted. She pushed the door wider, stepping partially into the hallway in Gerry’s body. She crossed Gerry’s arms, adopting a stance she’d seen Gerry use a hundred times – relaxed but subtly imposing. "Everything okay here, Mandy?" she asked, pitching Gerry’s voice lower, rougher, injecting a note of protective annoyance she hoped sounded authentic. She met the delivery guy’s eyes directly, a silent challenge.
The guy’s leer vanished, replaced by a flicker of surprise and wariness. He glanced between Gerry-in-Amanda and Amanda-in-Gerry, sizing up the unexpected male presence. "Just getting a signature," he mumbled, suddenly all business. He shoved the box into Gerry’s hands. "Here. Have a good one." He turned and lumbered down the hall towards the stairwell without another look back.
Gerry stumbled back into the room, slamming the door and leaning against it, breathing like he’d run a marathon. He clutched the small box to his breasts like a shield. Amanda closed the door properly, locking it, her own borrowed hands trembling slightly. The silence was thick, charged with the adrenaline aftershock and the lingering violation of the delivery guy’s gaze.
"That... that was..." Gerry stammered, unable to finish. He ripped off the hoodie, tossing it aside. The bra strap had slipped again. He reached back, fingers fumbling clumsily with the clasp under Amanda’s thin top. He adjusts the bra. Again. The sight was becoming a horrifyingly familiar punctuation mark to their nightmare.
Amanda looked away, focusing on the cheap, rain-blurred view from the window. The small victory of deflecting the creep felt hollow, drowned by the ocean of problems they still faced. Gerry’s breathing slowly evened out behind her. She heard the rustle of the package being set down on Amanda’s cluttered desk.
"What is it?" Gerry asked, Amanda’s voice subdued now, drained.
Amanda turned. Gerry was staring at the plain brown box. No return address. Just Amanda Riley’s name and dorm number printed neatly on the label. A cold dread, deeper than the storm’s chill, seeped into Amanda’s borrowed bones. Who sent this? Thorne? Confirmation he knew? A trap?
She picked it up. It was light. Too light. Gerry moved closer, Amanda’s expression mirroring Amanda’s own apprehension. The dorm room, their sanctuary, suddenly felt like a cage under siege. Outside, the rain hammered harder. Amanda’s fingers, Gerry’s fingers really, traced the sealed flap of the box. Hesitated. The silence stretched, taut as a wire.
Gerry swallowed hard. "Open it," he said, not wanting to break a nail by tearing open the box.
Amanda tore the tape. Lifted the flaps. Inside, nestled in plain packing paper, lay a single, gleaming object. It caught the dim afternoon light filtering through the rain-streaked window. Amanda’s breath hitched. Gerry gasped, Amanda’s hand flying to her mouth.
It was Professor Thorne’s distinctive silver pen. The one he’d been using during the storm. The one Amanda had knocked off his desk just before the surge hit. The one that had rolled towards Gerry’s foot in the chaotic moment before everything changed.
And tucked beneath it, on a small, crisp square of white cardstock, was a single, handwritten line in Thorne’s precise, elegant script:
Looking forward to discussing your unique... perspectives. My office. Monday. 10 AM.
