Chapter 1: Introduction
The sun was dipping low, painting the sky with hues of orange and red, like a bruise forming over the Wild West. The air was thick with the scent of dust and sweat, the cries of the townsfolk echoing through the streets. The usual calm of the afternoon had been shattered by the echo of hoofbeats and the shrill whistle of the Sheriff. The man himself rode into town on his chestnut mare, his weathered face set in a grim line, a far cry from the friendly nods and smiles he usually shared with the townsfolk.
Behind him, a long, roped line of horses followed, their saddles hinting at their stolen nature, and behind them, a prison wagon, its bars casting ominous shadows on the ground.
Samuel leaned against the saloon's rough wood post, his long, dark hair lifting slightly in the breeze. His blue eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, were hard and unyielding as he watched the procession. He could feel the weight of the town's eyes on him, a mix of fear, anger, and awe. He didn't flinch.
He didn't move a muscle. He just watched, his expression as stoic as the mountain range in the distance. The Sheriff dismounted, his spurs jingling against the wooden boardwalk. The townsfolk, drawn by the commotion, began to gather, their whispers and murmurs growing louder.
"Well, well, well," the Sheriff drawled, his voice echoing in the sudden hush. "If it isn't Sammy Boy. Been a while since we last had a chat, hasn't it?"
Samuel pushed himself off the post, his tall frame towering over the Sheriff.
"Evening, Sheriff," he said, his voice as cool as the mountain springs. "You're looking...flustered."
The Sheriff's jaw clenched, his mustache bristling. "Don't get cheeky with me, Samuel. You know why I'm here."
Samuel shrugged, a slow, lazy motion. "Do I? Because last I checked, I was just out for a little joyride."
A laugh rippled through the crowd, quickly stifled. The Sheriff's gaze flicked to them, a warning in his eyes. "Joyride, my ass.
You stole from the town, from honest folks trying to make a living. You stole gold and horses. And for that, you're gonna pay," the Sheriff growled, his voice low and dangerous.
Samuel's lips curled into a smirk. "And how exactly am I gonna do that, Sheriff? You gonna make me sweep the streets? Sing a few hymns?"
The Sheriff's hand shot out, grabbing Samuel's collar, pulling him close. Samuel's eyes narrowed, but he didn't resist. "You're gonna get a taste of your own medicine, Samuel. Public whipping.
The mere mention of it sent shivers down Samuel's spine, not from fear but from the dark anticipation of what was to come. He could see the flicker of excitement in some of the townsfolk's eyes, the whispered bets being made in the shadows. The Sheriff noticed it too, his grip tightening on Samuel's collar.
"You'll be whipped, publicly, until you're nothing but raw flesh. And then, you'll be handed over to the Calvary. They'll make sure you remember this day, every time you walk, every time you sit."
Samuel chuckled, a low, dangerous sound.
