Chapter 1: Introduction
The sun was a clear, bright jewel in the sky as Evelyn stepped out of the taxi, her sensible heels clicking against the concrete with each step. The city hummed around her, a symphony of honking horns and distant sirens, yet she barely noticed. She was focused on the tall, glass-and-steel building before her, the address emblazoned on the polished brass door: Blackwood Enterprises.
This was it—the final hurdle to her professional dreams. She had spent the past three years in college, working tirelessly towards her degree in marketing, and now, finally, she was here.
The door swung open effortlessly as she approached, revealing a lobby that was all polished marble and minimalist art. A receptionist greeted her with a professional smile, "Good morning. You must be Evelyn. Ms. Vance is expecting you."
Evelyn returned the smile, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yes, that's me."
The receptionist gestured towards the elevators. "Straight up to the top floor. You can't miss it."
Evelyn nodded, her palms already slick with sweat. She stepped into the elevator, the doors closing with a soft whoosh.
The mirrored walls reflected her image back at her—a young woman in a charcoal gray suit, her dark hair pulled back into a neat bun, her eyes darting nervously from one reflection to another. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. She could do this. She knew she could.
The elevator dinged, announcing her arrival at the top floor. The doors slid open, revealing a sleek, modern office. A woman in her early forties stood waiting, her heels clicking against the polished floor. She was impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, her blonde hair swept up into an elegant bun.
She smiled brightly, her eyes scanning Evelyn from head to toe. "Evelyn, I presume?"
Evelyn extended her hand. "Yes, that's me. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Vance."
Ms. Vance shook her hand firmly, her grip surprisingly strong. "The pleasure is all mine. I'm thrilled to have you here today. Let's get started, shall we?"
She led Evelyn down a corridor, the plush carpet muffling their footsteps. They passed several closed doors, each with a nameplate that seemed to shine under the harsh fluorescent lights.
The office was quiet, the only sound the soft hum of computers and the distant murmur of voices. Ms. Vance stopped in front of a large mahogany door with a gold nameplate that read, "Mr. Cedric Blackwood, CEO."
She knocked twice before opening the door. "Mr. Blackwood, Evelyn Chung is here for her interview."
A deep voice replied from within, "Send her in, Ms.
Ms. Vance stepped aside, gesturing for Evelyn to enter. Evelyn took a deep breath and stepped into the office.
The room was large, filled with an expensive-looking leather furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the city. But what struck her most was the man seated behind the desk. Cedric Blackwood was in his late forties, his dark hair peppered with silver at the temples. He was dressed impeccably in a tailored suit, his eyes a piercing blue that seemed to take her measure in an instant.
"Ah, Evelyn," he said, standing and extending his hand. "Pleasure to meet you."
His handshake was firm, his grip warm.
"The pleasure is all mine, Mr. Blackwood."
He gestured to the two chairs in front of his desk. "Please, have a seat."
Evelyn sat down, her hands folded neatly in her lap, her eyes briefly taking in the room. It was impressive, with its ornate bookcases and expensive-looking art adorning the walls. But what caught her attention was a small, framed photo on his desk—a beautiful woman with the same striking blue eyes as Mr. Blackwood.
Ms. Vance, still standing by the door, cleared her throat. "I'll leave you two to it.
Evelyn, if you could just remove your shoes before we begin, that would be appreciated." Ms. Vance's voice was polite but firm, her eyes flicking to Evelyn's feet.
Evelyn blinked, taken aback. "I'm sorry, remove my shoes?"
"Yes." Mr. Blackwood leaned back in his chair, his gaze steady. "A small quirk of our company culture. We find it helps with focus and relaxation. You'll see, it'll make you feel right at home."
Evelyn hesitated, her brows furrowing. She looked at Ms. Vance, who offered an encouraging smile.
"It's not uncommon in many Asian countries, Evelyn. A sign of respect, really."
Evelyn felt a slight flush creep up her cheeks, but she complied, slipping off her sensible heels. The cool marble floor sent a shiver up her spine. She tried to ignore the strange sensation, focusing instead on the task at hand.
Mr. Blackwood leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk. "So, Evelyn, tell me about yourself. Why marketing? Why Blackwood Enterprises?"
She took a deep breath, her hands still folded in her lap. "I've always been passionate about understanding consumer behavior, Mr. Blackwood.
"Well, I've always been fascinated by the psychology behind consumer choices. And Blackwood Enterprises—it's an industry leader, a pioneer in innovation. I'd be honored to contribute to such a dynamic team."
Before Evelyn could continue, Ms. Vance stepped forward, her heels clicking softly on the marble floor. She picked up Evelyn's shoes from where they lay, her fingers brushing against Evelyn's bare feet. Evelyn flinched slightly at the unexpected contact, her eyes widening.
Ms. Vance offered a small smile, her fingers lingering for a moment longer than necessary before she turned and walked towards the door, Evelyn's shoes in hand. "I'll just leave these with my assistant. If you need anything else, Mr. Blackwood, just let me know."
As Ms. Vance disappeared through the door, Evelyn felt a chill, both from the cool floor beneath her feet and the sudden change in atmosphere. She couldn't shake off the feeling of unease, a sense that something was not quite right. She glanced at Mr. Blackwood, who hadn't moved from his position behind the desk, his eyes still fixed on her.
"Now, where were we?" he asked, his voice low and steady. "Ah, yes.
Please, Evelyn, stand up for a moment," Mr. Blackwood requested, a slight hint of curiosity in his voice. His eyes flicked briefly to the floor, taking in her bare feet, before returning to meet her gaze.
Evelyn complied, her heart pounding a little faster as she pushed her chair back and stood. She felt a strange mix of vulnerability and defiance, her instincts telling her that this was not a typical interview scenario.
