Chapter 2: Building Tension
She was about to say something when Mr. Blackwood interjected, his voice calm but firm. "I appreciate your enthusiasm, Evelyn. However, I must caution you, this position requires a level of... comfort that some might find challenging."
He leaned back in his chair, his gaze piercing. "Now, tell me, Evelyn, how comfortable are you with pushing boundaries? In your personal life, I mean."
Evelyn swallowed hard, her mind racing. She wasn't sure where this line of questioning was going, but she could feel a prickle of unease crawling up her spine. "I-I'm not sure I understand, Mr. Blackwood. How is that relevant to the position?"
A slow smile spread across Mr. Blackwood's face, his eyes never leaving hers. "Everything is relevant, Evelyn.
The personal informs the professional," Mr. Blackwood replied, his voice as smooth as velvet. "Now, if you could, please remove your jacket. I want to see your comfort level in this interview." His gaze flicked to her jacket, then back to her face, holding steady.
Evelyn hesitated, her fingers tightening around the fabric of her jacket. She wasn't sure where this was going, but she could feel the weight of Mr. Blackwood's gaze, the pressure of expectation. She took a deep breath, her free hand smoothing down her skirt nervously. "I-I'm not sure that's appropriate, Mr. Blackwood," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mr. Blackwood's smile never wavered, but his eyes hardened slightly. "I assure you, it is. This isn't a typical interview, Evelyn.
Trust me, this is a good sign. You're one of the few candidates who've made it this far." His words were a mix of reassurance and command, his gaze unwavering. Evelyn felt a strange mixture of anxiety and anticipation, her breath hitching in her throat. She looked down at her jacket, her fingers lingering on the buttons. She thought about the many interviews she had been through, the countless questions she had answered, the numerous times she had proven her worth. And yet, this was different. This felt different. Slowly, tentatively, she unbuttoned her jacket, her hands trembling slightly as she slipped it off her shoulders. She handed it to Ms. Vance, who was still standing by the door, a small smile playing on her lips. The room felt colder without the jacket, the air conditioning prickling Evelyn's bare arms.
Mr. Blackwood leaned forward, his eyes scanning her from head to toe, his expression inscrutable. "Very good, Evelyn. I like to see a candidate who's willing to step out of their comfort zone."
Ms. Vance stepped forward, her heels clicking softly on the marble floor. "Yes, Mr. Blackwood is right. It's important to be comfortable in your own skin, isn't it, Evelyn?" Her gaze flicked to Evelyn's hair, her lips curving into a slight smile. "Speaking of which, could you do us a favor and let down your hair? It's a simple request, but it can tell us a lot about a person's... flexibility."
Evelyn's hand instinctively went to her bun, her fingers curling around the hairpin.
She hesitated for a moment, her eyes darting between Mr. Blackwood and Ms. Vance. She could feel the weight of their gazes, the expectation hanging heavy in the air. She took a deep breath, her fingers slowly releasing the hairpin. Her dark hair cascaded down her back in soft waves, the ends brushing against her lower back. She looked at Mr. Blackwood, her eyes wide and questioning. "Is that... acceptable?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mr. Blackwood nodded, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Much better," he murmured, his eyes lingering on her hair. "Now, Evelyn, let's talk about your first assignment, shall we?" His voice was smooth and silky, like velvet running through her fingers. He leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk, his fingers steepled in front of him.
