Chapter 3: The Couch
The flannel shirt was red and black, one of her father’s, smelling faintly of sawdust and bar soap. She wore nothing underneath. The lamplight in the living room was a dim, buttery pool that caught the copper in her hair and the pale sweep of her thighs as she stood from the floral couch. The magazines on the coffee table were a silent audience.
Jack froze just inside the sliding glass door, the night air still cool on his back. His heart was a frantic thing in his chest. The garage, she’d said. But she was here.
“Changed my mind,” Kate said, her voice a low scrape in the quiet room. She didn’t smile. Her eyes were dark, serious. She undid the last button and let the shirt fall open, then shrugged it off her shoulders. It whispered to the floor. She stood completely naked, arms at her sides, not posing, just existing in the space between them. Her athletic body was all taut lines and soft curves, fair skin luminous in the gloom. A few faint freckles dotted her chest. He could see the quick rise and fall of her breath.
“No more stages,” she said. She took a step toward him. “No more practice.”
He couldn’t speak. He just watched her, drinking in the reality of her. This was Kate, who’d beaten him at Mario Kart in fifth grade, who’d borrowed his calculus notes, whose laugh he knew. And this was also someone entirely new.
“I don’t want you to make love to me, Jack.” She was close enough now that he could feel the heat coming off her skin. “I want you to fuck me. Here. Now.”
The words, so blunt, so crude in her mouth, short-circuited his brain. All his nervous planning, the condom in his wallet that had lived there for six months, the way he’d rehearsed gentle touches—it all evaporated. There was only need, a sharp, desperate pull in his gut.
He reached for her, his hands finding the narrow dip of her waist. Her skin was so soft. She tilted her head up and kissed him, not like before. This was all tongue and teeth, a hungry, claiming thing. She tasted of mint and something darker, fiercer. Her hands went to his belt, fumbling with the buckle. He helped, his own fingers thick and clumsy. His jeans and boxers pooled at his feet. The air was cool on his exposed skin, but he was burning up.
She broke the kiss, pushing him backward. He stumbled, his knees hitting the edge of the couch, and he sat down hard. The springs groaned. She followed him down, straddling his lap, her knees sinking into the cushions on either side of his hips. The wiry hair of his thighs against the smoothness of hers was a shock. Her core was hot, even before contact, a radiant heat against his straining erection.
“Do you have one?” she breathed, her forehead against his.
He nodded, fumbling for his discarded jeans. He pulled his wallet out, the leather worn soft. The condom packet was there, tucked behind a fading movie ticket. He tore it open with his teeth, the foil sharp on his tongue. His hands were shaking violently.
“Let me,” she said. She took the rolled latex from him. Her touch was steadier, but not by much. She unrolled it over him, her fingers brushing his skin, and the simple intimacy of that act, her head bent in concentration, was almost more devastating than anything before. She smoothed it down to the base, her thumb lingering.
Then she shifted her weight, lifting herself up. She guided him with one hand, positioning him at her entrance. She was slick, wetness coating the tip of him. Her eyes locked on his. There was a flicker there—not fear, but a profound, acknowledging gravity. This was it.
“Okay,” she whispered, more to herself than to him.
She sank down.
There was resistance, a tight, clutching heat, then a sudden yielding. He was inside her. All the way. Her head fell back, a choked gasp tearing from her throat. Her nails dug into the muscles of his shoulders, sharp points of pain. He was buried in her, enveloped by a feeling so intense it bordered on unbearable. He didn’t move. He couldn’t. He just felt her around him, the incredible, living warmth, the slow, pulsing clench of her body accepting his.
“Jesus,” he hissed.
She lowered her head, her breathing ragged. Tears sparkled in her lashes, but her jaw was set. “It hurts,” she said, the words raw and honest. “But don’t stop. Don’t you fucking stop.”
She began to move. A tentative rock of her hips. The sensation made him see stars. He gripped her hips, his fingers pressing into her flesh, and helped her find a rhythm. It was awkward at first, a syncopated stumble. The couch creaked in loud, rhythmic protest beneath them. Each thrust was a revelation. The friction, the wet, sliding heat, the way her body opened for him.
“Harder,” she gasped into his ear, her breath hot. “Come on, Jack. Fuck me. Really fuck me.”
He obeyed. He drove up into her, meeting her downward grind. The awkwardness burned away, replaced by a raw, piston-like efficiency. Their skin slapped together, a wet, rhythmic beat underscored by the couch’s complaints and their own ragged breathing. He was lost in the sheer physicality of it, the primal drive to go deeper, faster. The floral pattern of the couch blurred behind her.
Her dirty talk was a constant, filthy stream in his ear. “Yeah, like that. Fill me up. You feel so fucking big. Stretching me open.” Her words spurred him on, each one a jolt of electricity. She bit his shoulder, hard. The pain was sharp and bright, anchoring him. “Are you gonna come? Come inside me. Pump your come into that condom. Mark me even though you can’t.”
Her words unspooled him. The coil that had been tightening since he first saw her on the step, since her taste filled his mouth, since she’d knelt before the mirror, snapped. A wave of pure, mindless release crashed through him. He slammed up into her one last, desperate time, his body arching, a guttural, animal shout torn from his throat. He spasmed inside her, the pulses seeming to go on forever, draining him of every thought, every worry, every ounce of himself.
He collapsed forward, his face buried in the sweat-damp hollow of her neck. He was heavy, boneless. She held him, her arms wrapped tightly around his back, her legs still locked around his waist. He could feel her heart hammering against his chest, a wild echo of his own slowing beat.
They stayed like that for a long time, joined, breathing each other’s air. The room came back slowly: the faint hum of the refrigerator, the tick of a clock in the hall, the smell of their sex mingling with the old-couch and lotion scent of the house.
Finally, she loosened her grip. He softened inside her and slipped out. The loss was profound, a sudden, intimate emptiness. He slumped back onto the couch, spent. She winced as she shifted off him, settling beside him, one leg tucked under her. She reached between her legs, her fingers coming away slick with a mix of her wetness and his condom-lubricated release. She looked at it, then wiped her hand absently on the discarded flannel shirt on the floor.
“Okay,” she said softly. “So that’s what that’s like.”
He just nodded, incapable of speech. He carefully disposed of the condom, tying it off and tucking it into the empty foil packet, a messy, unglamorous postscript. He felt exposed, vulnerable sitting there naked. He reached for his boxers.
“Don’t,” she said. She curled into his side, her head on his shoulder, her hand flat on his chest. Her skin was cooling, prickled with goosebumps. He pulled the old afghan from the back of the couch and draped it over them. It smelled of dust and cat, but it was warm.
They sat in silence. The adrenaline was leaching away, leaving a strange, hollow quiet in its place. He’d done it. He’d had sex. With Kate. It had been brutal and beautiful and terrifying. He’d expected to feel triumphant, or worldly. He just felt… quiet.
“Did you…?” he finally asked, the question trailing off.
“Come?” She shook her head against his shoulder. “No. It hurt too much at first. Then it just felt… intense. Good, but not like that.” She wasn’t upset. She sounded thoughtful, analytical. “Next time will be better. For me.”
Next time. The words hung there. There was no question. This wasn’t a one-off. The promise of the garage, of again, was still alive in the room.
“Are you okay?” he asked. “I mean… the pain…”
“I’m fine. It’s supposed to hurt the first time, right?” She said it like she was quoting a textbook, a Cosmo article maybe. “It’s already fading. Just feels… sore. Used.” She said ‘used’ not with sadness, but with a kind of dark satisfaction.
He turned his head and kissed her hair. The gesture was instinctive, tender. It felt out of place after what they’d just done, but he didn’t care.
She tilted her face up and kissed his jaw. “My parents will be back in an hour.”
The real world intruded, cold and practical. “I should go.”
“Yeah.” But she didn’t move. Her fingers traced idle patterns on his chest. “You know,” she said, her voice sleepy, “I thought I’d feel different. After.”
“Do you?”
“I don’t know. I feel… empty. In a good way. Like all the buzzing in my head stopped.” She paused. “You were good. You listened.”
It was the highest praise he could imagine. He pulled her closer.
They dozed, a tangled heap under the afghan, for maybe twenty minutes. The languid peace was shattered by the sudden, blaring ring of the landline phone on the wall in the kitchen. They both jumped. Kate scrambled up, grabbing the flannel shirt and wrapping it around herself as she padded to answer it.
“Hello? Hey, Mom.” Her voice was clear, bright, perfectly normal. A performance. “Yep, just watching MTV. Jack came over to borrow that Better Than Ezra CD. Yeah, we’re fine. See you soon.” She hung up.
The spell was broken. The room was just a room again. Jack stood and dressed quickly, the familiar constraint of his jeans feeling alien now. Kate buttoned the shirt, covering herself.
At the sliding door, she stopped him. She put a hand on his arm. “Tomorrow night. After dinner. The garage. The side door will be unlocked.”
He nodded. “The sleeping bag?”
“Yeah.” A ghost of her earlier smile returned. “Bring more than one condom.”
He slipped out into the cool night. The backyard was dark, the familiar shapes of the tree and the swing set just shadows. He felt split in two. One part was the Jack who had walked in, nervous, clutching a mixtape. The other was the Jack who had just been inside Kate, who had made her cry out, who had fallen apart in her arms. They didn’t fit together yet.
He cycled home through the silent streets, the wind drying the sweat on his forehead. His body ached in new places. The smell of her, of sex, of the old couch, clung to his skin. He let himself into his quiet house, past his snoring father in the recliner, and went straight to the shower.
Under the hot spray, he replayed it. The look in her eyes when she said fuck me. The shocking tightness of her. The sound of her voice in his ear, filthy and perfect. The feel of her holding him afterward. He leaned his forehead against the tiles. He was hard again, the memory alone enough to stir him. He took himself in hand, and with a few rough, hurried strokes, he came again, silently, the water washing the evidence away. It felt like a secret, a shameful echo of the real thing.
The next day was a haze. He mowed the lawn, the mindless monotony a blessing. He tried to read a novel for his college prep course but the words swam. All he could see was the curve of her back in the lamplight. All he could feel was the phantom memory of being inside her.
He packed a small backpack after dinner: two condoms from the box in his top drawer, a bottle of water, a flashlight. It felt ludicrous, like he was going on a clandestine mission. In a way, he was.
The side door to the detached garage was indeed unlocked. The interior was a cavern of shadows, smelling of gasoline, damp concrete, and old grass clippings. A single bare bulb hung from the ceiling, casting a weak yellow light. Her brother’s old Honda Civic took up one bay. The other was a graveyard of lawn equipment, cardboard boxes, and sporting goods.
Kate was there. She’d dragged the faded blue sleeping bag from a shelf and unrolled it onto a relatively clear patch of concrete floor. She’d added a few couch cushions for padding. She was wearing a simple black tank top and cut-off denim shorts, her hair in a messy bun. She looked like she was about to go for a run, not orchestrate a second sexual encounter.
“Hey,” she said. She seemed calmer today, less feverish.
“Hey.” He dropped his backpack by the door.
“My parents think I’m at the library. I have two hours.”
Two hours. An eternity. A blink.
She sat on the sleeping bag and patted the space beside her. He joined her. The concrete was hard even through the cushioning. The garage was cool, the air still.
“I’m sore,” she said bluntly. “So we’re gonna go slow. And you’re gonna make me come first. With your mouth. Like you did before.”
His blood, which had been sluggish with anxiety, began to heat. “Okay.”
“But first,” she said, turning to face him. “Talk to me. Was it weird? Yesterday? After?”
He was surprised by the question. He thought she’d want to bypass talk entirely. “Yeah,” he admitted. “It was. I felt… disconnected. Like it happened to someone else.”
She nodded, as if he’d confirmed a hypothesis. “Me too. Last night, in my bed, I kept touching myself where you’d been. Trying to feel it again. To make it real.” She leaned back on her elbows, the position stretching the tank top across her chest. “So tonight, we make it real. No clothes. Not yet.”
She toed off her sneakers, then hooked her thumbs in the waistband of her shorts and panties, pushing them down in one motion. She kicked them aside. Then she pulled the tank top over her head. She lay back on the sleeping bag, completely naked, one arm flung over her eyes. “Go on,” she said. Her voice was calm, but he could see the rapid flutter of her pulse in her throat.
This was different. It wasn’t a command from above, a frantic grinding. It was an invitation. A offering.
He moved between her legs, the rough nylon of the sleeping bag scratching his knees. He bent his head. He knew her landscape better now. He started slow, gentle licks, paying attention to her reactions—the hitch in her breath, the twitch of her inner thigh. He teased her, circling her clit but avoiding direct pressure, until she groaned in frustration.
“Stop playing,” she muttered.
He smiled against her and got to work. He used the flat of his tongue, then the tip, varying speed and pressure. He slipped a finger inside her, carefully, feeling the tender, swollen flesh. She was wet, but tight. He remembered the feel of her around him and felt a surge of possessive heat. He added a second finger, curling them, searching.
“There,” she gasped, her hips lifting off the bag. “Right there, fuck, yes.”
He found a rhythm with his fingers and his tongue, a syncopated pulse that made her body tense and arch. She wasn’t quiet. Her sounds echoed in the hollow garage, bouncing off the tools and the car. She cursed, she pleaded, she chanted his name. It was raw and beautiful. He watched her face, the way her lips parted, the flutter of her eyelids, the sheer abandon. This was for her. Solely for her.
Her climax built, a trembling, tightening coil. She fisted her hands in his hair, not pushing, just holding on. “I’m gonna… Jack, don’t stop, I’m gonna come, I’m gonna—”
She shattered. A raw, loud cry tore from her throat, her body bowing off the floor in a rigid arc. He kept his mouth on her, gentling his touch, drawing the pulses out until she went limp, boneless, her grip on his hair slackening.
He crawled up her body, lying beside her. She turned into him, burying her face in his neck. She was trembling. “Holy shit,” she breathed, the words muffled against his skin. “Okay. That was real.”
After a few minutes, she reached for his jeans. This time, there was no frantic urgency. She undressed him slowly, her fingers tracing the lines of his hips, the planes of his stomach. When he was naked, she pushed him onto his back and straddled his hips. She took the condom from his open backpack and rolled it on him, her movements sure now.
She positioned herself above him. “Slow,” she reminded him, and she began to lower herself.
The penetration was different. There was resistance, a wince that crossed her face, but it was less. She sank down onto him inch by excruciating inch, until he was fully seated inside her. She let out a long, shuddering sigh. “Okay,” she whispered. “That’s… okay. It doesn’t hurt. It’s just… full.”
She began to move. A slow, grinding rock of her hips. The angle was different, deeper. He put his hands on her, guiding her, but she set the pace. It was languid, almost meditative. The frantic energy of the couch was gone, replaced by something more deliberate, more sensuous. He could watch her, the play of muscles in her stomach, the sway of her breasts, the intense concentration on her face. She was learning her own body, learning what felt good.
“You can… you can move,” she said after a while, her voice thick.
He thrust up, matching her rhythm. It was a deep, sliding connection. The soreness she’d mentioned seemed to melt away, replaced by a building tension. Her breaths came faster. Her movements lost their careful control, becoming more urgent. She leaned forward, bracing her hands on his chest, her hair falling around their faces like a curtain.
“Fuck me now,” she panted. “Harder. Like last time.”
He obeyed, driving up into her with deep, powerful strokes. The sleeping bag rustled beneath them. The air in the garage grew thick and humid with their exertion. She met him thrust for thrust, her cries becoming louder, more shattered.
“I’m close,” she gasped. “Again. Make me come again with you inside me.”
He was right there with her, the pressure building at the base of his spine. He reached between them, his thumb finding her clit. She jerked violently. “Yes! Right there, don’t stop, don’t stop—”
Her second orgasm ripped through her, a series of violent, clenching spasms that milked him relentlessly. The sensation tipped him over the edge. He came with a choked groan, his hips bucking up into her, holding her tightly as he emptied himself.
They collapsed together, a tangled, sweaty heap on the musty sleeping bag. The concrete floor was unforgiving, the garage dark and strange around them. But in that moment, it felt like the only real place in the world.
She nuzzled his ear, her voice sleepy and sated. “We have an hour left. And you brought another condom.”
He laughed, a soft, disbelieving sound that echoed in the quiet. He held her closer, the reality of her, of this, settling into his bones. It was real. And it was just beginning.
