Chapter 2: Chapter 2
Tell me about this car."
"It was a Lincoln MKZ. Black on black. Sticky tires. Smooth ride. I saw it on the way to practice one day and I wanted it so badly. The problem was, I was late for practice and they had already driven off the lot. I followed them for a while but they kept going. Finally, I gave up. I figured they'd get caught eventually and it wouldn't matter anyway. So, what happened?"
"Well, I M glad you asked. First of all, I got a call from Coach Beilein the next day. He wanted to know what kind of car I was driving and where I got it.I told him I didn't know and that I'd follow the car until I did. Well, I did follow it but I couldn't keep up the speed. It was a stretch limo with tinted windows. You could tell it was a stretch because the wheels were so big and the body was so stretched. They have to do that for safety. It was a big car. I got it from a dealership in Ann Arbor. It was a used car but it had only been driven a couple thousand miles. That made it a good car but not a great car. A great car would have been brand new. Anyway, I told the coach I had no idea where the car came from or who owned it.The next day, I got a call from the police. They said they had found my car abandoned in a cornfield. Apparently, some kids had stolen it and crashed it. One of them had died in the crash. The other two were arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. They were lucky. Other than the dead kid, they got away with just a couple years of probation. It was a strange situation. I was glad it was over. It was a strange time. I wasn't sure what to make of it. I d seen car thefts before but this was the first time I had been the victim. Usually, I was the one doing the stealing. I guess it made me a hypocrite to say I hated car thieves but I loved my car.It was a nice car. I had gotten it used but it had only been driven a couple thousand miles. That made it a good car but not a great car. A great car would have been brand new. Anyway, I told the police I had no idea where the car came from or who owned it. They said they would figure it out and let me know.
