Chapter 1: Introduction
Dominic pushed open the heavy glass door of the IVF clinic and stepped into the sterile realm of reproduction. The walls were devoid of any color and adorned only with clinically designed posters reminding visitors about their mission: "Growing Families, Saving Lives."
The chilly air hit him like a slap in the face as he walked down the linoleum hallways. His pulse quickened with the thought that this was going to be it—the day he was finally going to become a father.
But as he approached the examination room where the nurses were to extract the necessary samples, Dominic felt a familiar knot tighten in his stomach. This was never easy for him.
He knocked tentatively on the door and pushed it open, revealing a small, dimly lit room with cold metal surfaces and clinical equipment. The nurse in charge of the samples greeted him cooly, her professionalism a stark contrast to Dominic's anxiety.
"Mr. Moretti, right?" she asked, already pulling out a tube and a small plastic specimen cup. "I'm Nurse Lawson.
I'll be your guide through today's process," she said, her voice all business. She then pointed to a chair and a small TV screen in the corner of the room. "If you need some, uh, assistance with the task at hand, there is some adult content on the TV. Just let me know and I'll queue it up for you," she added, trying to hide the awkwardness of the situation behind a thin veil of humor.
Dominic managed a weak chuckle, but the tension in the air was palpable.
