Chapter 1: Introduction
The jungle teemed with a cacophony of otherworldly sounds as the ship's hatch groaned to life. The cloying vegetation released a heady aroma as the inky depths parted like a velvet curtain revealing a stage. A torrent of green vines and lush foliage unfurled ahead, as far as the eye could see. The marine platoon, five seasoned combat veterans, was utterly isolated on an alien world just beyond the edge of human-colonized space.
Sgt. Jace led the group, a weathered man of few words but whose presence spoke volumes. His no-nonsense attitude made him the glue holding the four remaining marines together in this unfamiliar, perilous terrain.
Jace's second-in-command was PFC Ghost, a mysterious figure who seamlessly melded into the background. He wore sunglasses that concealed his eyes and communicated with a low, hushed voice, revealing a surprising wit and intelligence. Ghost carried himself with a wariness that intrigued Jace, putting him on edge.
The young men who completed the platoon, PFC Coy and SPC Kendra, were completely unphased by Ghost's demeanor, drawn to the enigma surrounding him. Coy, the spirited and reckless of the bunch, was constantly pushing boundaries, testing the limits of their new reality and the patience of his commanders. Kendra, the only woman among them, held her own with admirable stoicism, her tough exterior built from years of defying expectations and conforming to none.
