Chapter 2: Building Tension
The phone rang five times before a woman's voice picked up, her tone as smooth as velvet. "You've reached Dr. Hartley's office. This is Lila speaking. How can I assist you?"
The words "Dr. Hartley's office" sent a shiver down my spine, and I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly dry. "Um, hi. I was calling about the... the study. The flyer said to call this number?" My voice wavered, and I cursed myself for sounding so unprepared.
"Ah, yes. The study," Lila replied, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.
"Well, Tammy, you're in luck. We only have one position left open, and it's yours if you want it."
"What... what does the study involve?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest like a drum.
Lila chuckled, a sound that sent goosebumps down my arms. "Oh, nothing too crazy. Just some... unusual sensory tests. But don't worry, it's completely safe and confidential."
Unusual sensory tests? My mind raced with possibilities, but I pushed them aside. The offer of money was too tempting to pass up.
I needed it, and I knew it. But as I hung up the phone, my hands shook slightly, and I felt a knot of nervous excitement in the pit of my stomach. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I was about to find out.
I spent the rest of the day in a daze, trying to focus on my studies but finding my brain wandering back to the phone call. What kind of sensory tests were they talking about? And why did Lila's voice make me feel so... odd? I pushed the thoughts aside and tried to concentrate on my reading, but it was like trying to hold water in my hands.
My gaze kept drifting from the pages of my textbook to the flyer on my wall. After what felt like an eternity of staring, I finally gave in and dialed Sarah's number.
"Hey, Tam," she answered, her voice breezy and carefree. "How's life in the dorm?"
"Same old, same old," I replied, trying to inject some enthusiasm into my voice. "Listen, Sarah, I need to ask you something. Weird question, but bear with me."
She snorted. "Alright, weirdo.
My mind kept slipping back to the phone call, and I found myself glancing at the flyer every few minutes, as if it might suddenly reveal its secrets to me.
As the afternoon wore on, Sarah came back, her face flushed and her eyes sparkling. "Guess who just got a job as a barista?" she announced, twirling around the room like a dancer.
I looked up from my textbook, forcing a smile. "That's great, Sarah. Congrats."
She paused, noticing the flyer pinned to the wall.
Her eyes widened, and she pointed at it. "Wait, is that...?"
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "Yeah, it is. I called about it today. There's only one spot left, and I took it."
Sarah's eyebrows shot up, her grin fading. "Tammy, what are you thinking? That sounds... shady."
I leaned back in my chair, defending myself. "Come on, Sarah. It's not like that. They said it's just some sensory tests. And I really need the money, you know that."
She bit her lip, looking at me with concern.
"But Tammy, this could be anything. What if it's dangerous?"
I rolled my eyes, trying to keep my voice steady. "It's not, Sarah. They said it's completely safe and confidential. It's probably just some market research or something."
Sarah wasn't convinced. "Market research? For what, sex toys?"
I choked on my laughter, nearly spitting out my coffee. "Sarah!" I muttered, glancing around the room to make sure no one else heard. "It's probably just some perfume company or something.
