Chapter 4: Reciprocation

The red numbers of the clock bled into the dark: 8:03. The silence was different now. It wasn’t the empty quiet of the cottage or the tense silence of two strangers. This was a living, breathing silence, filled with the echo of my pulse slowing in my ears, the solid reality of his chest against my back, the faint, musky scent of us on the sheets.

His arm was a warm, heavy weight across my ribs. His breathing had evened out, but I knew he wasn’t asleep. I could feel the alert stillness in him.

My own mind was a riot. The physical shockwave had subsided, leaving behind a luminous, trembling clarity. And with it, a sharp, prickling imbalance.

He… I… he did that. For me. To me.

The generosity of it was a spotlight on my own inaction. I lay there, naked and utterly known, while he was still half-clothed beside me. The inequality of it was suddenly unbearable. A transactional thought, cold and city-bred, slithered in: You owe him.

But it wasn’t about debt. It was about wanting to give him a fragment of the shattering peace he’d given me. To see his control break. To map his reactions like he’d mapped mine. The desire was fierce and terrified all at once.

My body was languid, but my thoughts were frantic. What do I do? My knowledge was theoretical, gleaned from prose that faded to ellipses at the crucial moment. The bath had been a solo exploration, a closed loop. This was a foreign country, and I didn’t speak the language.

I took a shallow breath. His arm tightened reflexively around me.

“Tim?”

“Hmm?” His voice was drowsy, close to my ear.

“You’re still… wearing your underwear.”

A low chuckle vibrated through his chest into my spine. “Observant again.”

“It’s… uneven.”

He was quiet for a moment. Then he shifted, rolling onto his back. The loss of his heat against my back was immediate. I turned to face him. In the lamplight from the living room, I could see the stain on his briefs, the prominent shape beneath the damp cotton. My mouth went dry.

“It’s not a scorecard, Elara,” he said softly, looking at the ceiling.

“I know.” I did know. That was the problem. It made the urge to touch him more acute, not less. It wasn’t about repayment. It was about connection, about completing the circuit. “I just… I want to.”

He turned his head on the pillow. His eyes found mine. “You don’t have to.”

“I want to,” I repeated, the words gaining strength. “I just… I don’t know how. Not really. I might be… bad at it.”

The admission hung there, pathetic and honest. A smile touched his lips, not mocking, but unbearably tender. “There’s no ‘bad’. There’s just… what feels good.”

“What feels good?” I whispered.

He guided my hand, slowly, to his stomach. My palm lay flat on the hard plane of his abdomen, just above the waistband of his briefs. I could feel the muscle tense under my touch. “Start here.”

My heart was a frantic bird again. I licked my lips. I let my fingers walk downwards, tracing the line of hair that disappeared under the elastic. The cotton was damp, warm. He hissed in a breath when my knuckles brushed against him.

Encouraged, I curled my fingers under the waistband. He lifted his hips, a small, cooperative movement. I tugged, peeling the fabric down. He helped, kicking them off the rest of the way. Then he was bare beside me, fully exposed in the dim light.

I stared. I had seen classical statues, medical diagrams. This was neither. This was Tim. Alive, potent, and utterly real. The sight sent a fresh, slick heat between my own thighs. My shyness warred with a deep, curious hunger.

Gods above he was big...

Could I even wrap my hand around it?

“You can look,” he said, his voice strained. “It’s okay.”

I reached out, then pulled my hand back. “What if I… do it wrong?”

He caught my retreating hand, brought it to his mouth, and pressed a kiss to my palm. “Your touch,” he said against my skin, “could never be wrong.” He placed my hand back on his chest. “Explore. Like one of your books. Read me.”

The metaphor unlocked something. I could do that. I was good at reading.

I started with the text I knew. The slope of his shoulders, the firm curves of his pectorals. My touch was feather-light, learning the geography. I traced his collarbone, the strong column of his neck, the rough stubble along his jaw. My fingers brushed his lips; he kissed them.

I moved downward, over the ridged landscape of his abdomen. He trembled. Each twitch, each hitched breath, was a note of punctuation. I was deciphering him.

My courage inched lower. I let the backs of my fingers trail through the coarse, dark hair at his navel. He jerked. My eyes flew to his face. His were clenched shut, his jaw tight.

“Sorry,” I breathed.

“Don’t you dare apologize,” he gritted out. “Please.”

Please. The word was a key. I wrapped my fingers around him.

The feel was a shock. Velvet over steel, pulsing with a heat that seared my palm. He made a raw, choked sound. I froze.

“Just… hold it,” he managed. “Get used to the weight.”

I did. I held him, feeling the life thrum in my hand. Then, remembering his slow, patient circles, I moved my thumb over the slick head. He groaned, long and low, his hips lifting off the mattress.

I was right. He was big. And no, my hand could not fully wrap around it.

It was a power I’d never imagined. My shyness evaporated, burned away by the sheer physical evidence of his pleasure. I began to move my hand, tentative strokes, copying the rhythm he’d used on me. It was clumsy. My wrist ached. I had no technique.

But he was beyond technique. His hands fisted in the sheets. A litany of broken words fell from his lips—my name, curses, prayers. Watching him come undone was the most captivating thing I’d ever seen. My own body sang in sympathetic response.

“Elara… wait.” His hand closed over mine, stilling it. His eyes opened, blazing in the dim light. “Not like this. I want to be inside you. For that.” He was breathing hard. “But only if you—”

I hesitated. Was I ready for that? I'd only known him for a day and he's already had his fingers inside me. Was I really this much of an easy girl?

I was scared. This was a big decision. But I needed to give him something back. Was this the right thing to give?

The thought of him inside me, that way, was a canyon I wasn't ready to leap across. My body still hummed from his touch, but the ghost of that first, stretching fullness from his finger was a fresh memory. This would be more. So much more.

I shook my head, a tiny, frantic motion. “I can’t. Not yet. It’s too…” I searched for a word that wasn’t ‘scary’. “Soon.”

His hand, still over mine, softened. He brought our joined hands to his mouth again, kissing my knuckles. “Okay. That’s more than okay.” He took a steadying breath, his eyes holding mine with a seriousness that calmed my racing thoughts. “We have time. All the time.”

The relief was immediate, but the imbalance returned, sharp as a splinter. I looked down at where our hands rested on his stomach, at the evidence of his arousal that my hesitation did nothing to diminish. “But you’re still…” I gestured weakly.

A faint, strained smile touched his lips. “I am. And it’s fine. It’ll pass.”

It felt like a dismissal of his own need, and that was worse. I didn’t want it to just ‘pass’. I wanted to be the reason it crested and broke. I just needed a different path. My gaze traveled from his face, down his body, and settled there. An alternative presented itself, one my theoretical knowledge at least acknowledged. The idea sent a jolt of pure, electric fear through me, followed by a curl of dark curiosity.

“I could…” I whispered, my voice barely audible. I couldn’t say the words. My face was on fire.

He understood. I saw the knowledge flash in his eyes, saw his abdomen clench. “Elara, no. You don’t have to—”

“I want to try,” I interrupted, surprising myself. The want was real, tangled up with nerves. “But I need you to… tell me. Show me. Like you did before.”

He was silent for a long moment, his chest rising and falling. He was fighting himself, I could see it. The gentleman versus the man. The man won, but he made it a concession. “Just that. Only if you want. And you stop whenever.”

“Okay.”

He guided me gently, his hands on my shoulders, urging me to shift down the bed. The sheets whispered against my skin. I moved awkwardly, settling in the space beside his hip. The intimacy of my position, my face so close to him, made my head spin. He smelled of clean sweat and skin and something uniquely, musky male.

“Look at me first,” he said. I dragged my eyes up the length of his body to find his. His gaze was dark, intense, but there was a softness at the edges. “Your pace. No rules.”

I nodded, my mouth too dry to speak. I lowered my head. My hair fell forward, a curtain of auburn separating us from the rest of the room. In this private, perfumed darkness, I felt bolder.

I started with my hand again, rediscovering the shape of him, the startling smoothness of the head, the powerful, corded shaft. I bent and pressed my lips to the skin of his inner thigh, feeling the jump of the muscle. His gasp was a sharp reward.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I licked my lips, tasting salt. Then, driven by a instinct I didn't know I possessed, I closed my mouth over him.

The taste was complex, earthy, unequivocally him. The texture was a revelation. I could only manage the very tip, my lips stretched, my tongue experimenting. He cried out, a ragged sound that was half my name. One of his hands buried itself in my hair, not pushing, just holding, a point of anchor.

“Just like that,” he choked out. “Christ, yes. Just like that.”

The words were a fuel. I found a shallow rhythm, learning the way he swelled against my tongue, the way his hips made tiny, helpless lifts from the mattress. My own need became a distant, throbbing echo; all my focus was here, on the weight on my tongue, the sounds he made, the tremor in the hand tangled in my hair. This was a language I could learn. This was a gift I could give.

His breathing shattered into pieces. “I’m close, Elara, love, you should—”

I didn’t pull away. The warning was a vibration I felt in my own bones. I stayed, taking him deeper, my hand working where my mouth couldn’t. His grip in my hair tightened, a silent plea.

The tightening wasn't a command, it was a fracture. It was the last thread of his control snapping. That silent plea in his fingers, trembling against my scalp, unraveled any final hesitation in me. I didn't stop.

I leaned into the tension, letting him guide the depth, the pace surrendering to his instinct. A choked groan ripped from his throat, a sound so raw it seemed to scrape the air from the room. My own noises were muffled, involuntary vibrations against his skin—soft hums of effort, wet, open-mouthed gasps for breath that were obscenely loud in the quiet. I wasn’t trying to make them; they were just the physics of the act, the soundtrack of my focus.

His other hand came up, cradling the side of my head, his thumb stroking my temple in a devastating contrast to the building urgency below. “So good, Elara. You feel so… fuck.” The endearment was shattered by a blunt, helpless curse. His hips stuttered, a shallow, reflexive push he immediately tried to stifle, his thighs rigid.

I could taste the shift, a subtle, saline sharpness. The rhythm of his breathing broke into ragged pants. The hand in my hair flexed, not pulling, just holding on as if I were the only solid thing in a dissolving world. “I’m gonna—I can’t—”

His warning was a hoarse, strangled thing. I heard it, understood it, and made a conscious choice. I’d started this. I wanted to see it through. I wanted all of it.

I took him deeper, my throat relaxing around the intrusion, and hollowed my cheeks. The lewd, slick sound of it seemed to trigger him.

A broken cry tore from him, his body arching off the bed as if struck by lightning. The heat that flooded my mouth was a surprise, a bitter, primal pulse. I swallowed instinctively, the act as natural as it was profound. He shook through it, his fingers loosening in my hair to stroke the strands as the waves subsided, his murmurs softening into incoherent, grateful whispers.

Load after thick salty load flooded my mouth. It was shocked. I thought it'd be a small amount but here I was, my mouth filling up. I tried to gulp faster than he filled it. Some trickled out of my lips but I managed to keep most of it. I heard him groan as he watched my cheeks bulge. I take a deep breath through my nose and swallow all of it.

I drew back slowly, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. My jaw ached. My heart hammered, not with fear now, but with a dizzying sense of capability. I’d done that. I’d unraveled him.

He lay spent, one arm thrown over his eyes, his chest heaving. After a moment, he peeked out from under his forearm. His gaze was blurry, saturated with a vulnerability I’d never seen. He reached for me, his hand finding mine, our fingers lacing together.

“Come here,” he whispered, his voice utterly wrecked.

I crawled back up the bed, curling into his side. He turned, gathering me against him, skin to skin, his nose buried in my hair. We lay there, tangled in the aftermath. The clock ticked. A car passed somewhere in the distant village.

“That was…” He trailed off, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. “I have no words. That was… you are…”

“I didn’t know what I was doing,” I confessed into his collarbone.

His laugh was a weak puff of air. “You knew exactly what you were doing.” He pulled back just enough to look at me. His eyes searched my face. “Are you okay?”

I nodded. I was more than okay. I felt powerful. I felt quiet inside. The frantic buzz that had lived under my skin since he’d first handed me my mail was finally, blissfully silent. “It tastes… different than I thought.”

He groaned, half-laughing, half-embarrassed. “Don’t. I can’t handle any more revelations tonight.” He kissed my forehead, a long, lingering press of his lips. “You should sleep. It’s late.”

“You’ll stay?” The question was softer than the first time I’d asked it.

“My jeans are still soaking in your tub,” he murmured, already sounding drowsy. “I’m not going anywhere.”

He reached over and switched off the lamp, plunging us into a darkness that was no longer intimidating. It was a cocoon. His breathing evened out, deepening into sleep within minutes. I listened to it, my head on his chest, rising and falling with him.

The last thing I thought before sleep took me was that the cottage, for the first time, didn’t feel quiet.

It felt full.

I felt full.
