Chapter 1: Introduction
The sun was a blazing orb in the Mumbai sky as Mehdi and Ashraf stepped off the plane, the humidity hitting them like a wet wall. They were undercover, not as a married couple, but as a female Bollywood star and her manager, respectively. The mission was to infiltrate the glittering world of Bollywood and extract information from the highest echelons of the industry. It was a tall order, and the two spies were equipped with nothing but their wits, their looks, and a burning desire to bring the criminals to justice.
Mehdi had never worn a dress before, let alone a sari.
The silk fabric slipped between his fingers as he tried to wrap it around his waist, his reflection in the hotel mirror showing a man clearly out of his depth. He looked more like a scarecrow than a Bollywood star. "Ashraf," he called out, "I can't do this."
Ashraf walked in, his tall frame filling the doorway. He looked at Mehdi, his eyes scanning the disastrous attempt at a sari. "You know," he said, his voice laced with amusement, "they say practice makes perfect.
Which is a good thing, because you've got a lot of practicing to do."
Mehdi scowled, but there was no real malice behind it. "You're supposed to be my devoted husband, remember? A little more support would be nice."
Ashraf chuckled, walking over to him and taking the sari out of his hands. "When have I ever been just your devoted husband? I'm your partner, Mehdi. And partners tell each other the truth." He began to wrap the sari around Mehdi's waist, his movements sure and steady. "Besides, you're the one who insisted on doing this mission together.
You could have pulled rank, you know. Gone undercover as a male star and left me twirling around in a sari," Mehdi retorted, trying to ignore the gentle touch of Ashraf's hands on his waist.
Ashraf smirked, "And miss out on the opportunity to see you in a sari? Never." He stepped back, admiring his handiwork. "There. Now you look like a Bollywood star."
Mehdi looked at his reflection, turning slightly to see the sari drape elegantly around his body. Despite himself, he had to admit, it looked good. "Alright, alright. I get it.
You're a horrible person." Mehdi grinned, the first genuine smile since they'd landed in Mumbai. Ashraf returned the smile, clapping him on the shoulder.
"Come on, we've got a meeting with the director in an hour. Let's go over your cover story one more time."
As they sat at the luxurious, carved wooden table in the hotel suite, Mehdi ran a hand through his hair, now styled into loose waves cascading down his back. "Right, so I'm Aaliyah Khan, a struggling Bollywood actress looking for her big break.
You're my husband, Rahul, a former film producer turned manager, trying to launch my career," Mehdi recited, his voice steadier than his nerves.
Ashraf nodded, his eyes scanning the dossier laid out on the table. "And we're here because the director, Vikram Singh, is rumored to have ties with a notorious smuggling ring. Our goal is to get close to him, gather intel, and find out who's at the top of this operation."
Mehdi took a deep breath, letting the weight of their mission settle on his shoulders. "Got it. And remember, I'm the star here.
You're just the support," Mehdi added, a playful jab that belied the tension under his surface.
Ashraf raised an eyebrow. "Support? Please. I've managed to keep you alive on more missions than I can count. You're the one who needs the backup here."
Mehdi laughed, a warm sound that filled the room. You're the hero, I'm the sidekick. Happy now?"
Ashraf grinned, leaning back in his chair. "Much better. Now, let's talk about Vikram. He's known for his...
particular tastes," Ashraf said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, despite the two of them being alone in the room. "He likes his leading ladies to be... talented in more ways than one."
Mehdi raised an eyebrow, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Talented, you say?"
Ashraf nodded, a smirk playing on his lips. "That's why you're going to charm the pants off him. Figuratively speaking, of course."
Mehdi rolled his eyes, but there was a sparkle in them now. "Well, I can't very well charm him with my acting skills, can I?
I've only got one scene under my belt," Mehdi quipped, his fingers drumming a rhythm on the table.
Ashraf's smile widened, a glint in his eyes that Mehdi recognized all too well. "No, but I've seen you charm your way into and out of plenty of tight spots. This should be a piece of cake."
Mehdi chuckled, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one who has to deal with the creepy director's advances."
Ashraf leaned forward, his voice dropping low.
"Listen, Mehdi, I trust your judgment. If at any point you feel uncomfortable or things go too far, you call it off. We'll find another way in."
Mehdi appreciated the sentiment, but he knew the stakes. They needed to get close to Vikram, and that meant playing the game by his rules. "I'll be fine. I've handled worse in the field," he replied, his voice steady.
Ashraf nodded, but his gaze lingered, a hint of worry in his eyes. "Just remember, you're not alone in this.
I'll be right there, watching your back," Ashraf said, his voice a low rumble, his eyes never leaving Mehdi's. The room seemed to grow smaller, the air thickening between them.
Mehdi nodded, breaking the intensity of the moment with a soft laugh. "Well, then, let's get this show on the road. We've got a director to impress." He stood up, smoothing out his sari, and walked towards the door.
As they stepped out of the hotel, the cacophony of Mumbai hit them like a wall.
