Chapter 2: The Aftermath
The room was too bright, even with the blinds drawn. Chloe squinted against the harsh fluorescent light, her head pounding in time with the relentless beep of the monitor. Her throat felt like it had been scraped raw, and she swallowed hard, trying to muster enough moisture to speak. “Alexis?” she croaked, her voice barely audible over the hum of machinery. The figure beside her stirred, and Chloe blinked, her vision slowly sharpening into focus.
Alexis’s head snapped up, her usually perfect makeup smudged and tear-streaked. “Chloe! Oh my god, you’re awake.” Her voice cracked, and she reached for Chloe’s hand, her fingers cold and trembling. “How are you feeling? Do you need anything?Water? Painkillers? I can call the nurse—”
“Like I got hit by a bus,” Chloe interrupted, wincing as she tried to shift her weight. A sharp, searing pain shot through her lower body, forcing her back against the thin hospital pillow. “What the hell happened? Last thing I remember is… the chair. And then nothing.”
Alexis’s face crumpled, her lower lip quivering as fresh tears spilled over. “Oh, Chloe,” she whispered, her voice thick and shaky. “It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t called you, if I hadn’t distracted you with that stupid story about my client—” She broke off, choking on a sob, her hands clutching Chloe’s like a lifeline.
“Hey, hey, none of that,” Chloe said, her tone firm despite the rasp in her voice. She squeezed Alexis’s hand, her grip surprisingly strong. “It was an accident. A dumb, freak accident, but still just an accident. Besides, I was the one sitting on a plastic chair naked like an idiot. What did I think was going to happen?”
The door swung open, cutting through the tension, and a woman in a white coat stepped in, clipboard in hand. She had the kind of no-nonsense demeanor that made Chloe instantly uneasy. “Good, you’re awake,” the doctor said, her voice brisk but not unkind. “We need to discuss the results of your surgery.”
Chloe’s stomach dropped, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Surgery? What surgery?” she asked, her voice rising an octave. The doctor hesitated, her expression softening just enough to make Chloe’s chest tighten. “We did everything we could,” she began, her tone measured, “but the damage was… extensive. We had to perform a complete castration.”
The words hit Chloe like a punch to the gut, leaving her breathless. “Castration?” she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. “You mean… everything’s gone? Everything?” The doctor nodded, her gaze steady but sympathetic. “I’m afraid so. There was no way to repair the damage. I’m sorry.”
Chloe turned to Alexis, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief. Alexis was sobbing openly now, her shoulders shaking as she buried her face in her hands. “It’s all my fault,” she choked out between sobs. “I should have never called, never distracted you. This is all on me.”
“Alexis, stop it,” Chloe snapped, her voice sharper than she intended. She winced at the hurt that flashed across Alexis’s face but pressed on. “This isn’t helping. I need you to be strong for me right now, not wallow in your own guilt.”
Alexis looked up, her mascara streaked down her cheeks, her eyes wide and watery. “But… how can I not feel guilty? You lost your balls because of me!”
“I lost my balls because I was being a dumbass and sitting on a plastic chair naked,” Chloe shot back, her frustration bubbling over. “It’s not your fault I have the common sense of a goldfish. Seriously, who does that?”
The doctor cleared her throat, breaking the tense silence. “I understand this is a difficult time, but we need to discuss your options moving forward. There are prosthetic options, hormone therapy…”
Chloe waved her hand dismissively, cutting the doctor off mid-sentence. “I don’t want to talk about any of that right now,” she said, her voice trembling. “I just want to be left alone. With Alexis. And maybe a whole bottle of tequila.” She turned to Alexis, her eyes pleading. “Can you do that for me?”
Alexis nodded, wiping away her tears with the back of her hand. “Of course,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Anything for you.”
