Chapter 1: Introduction

The train rattled through the late afternoon, sweeping past the city’s grimy edges and into the heart of the metropolis. The carriage was a symphony of clattering cups, muffled conversations, and the occasional wail of a baby. It was the usual chorus of the commute, a soundtrack to the daily grind. Aisyah sat by the window, her hijab framing her stern face, and beside her, Rina, her daughter, played with her phone, her short hair sticking up in all directions.

Aisyah looked out the window, her mind miles away, buried in the paperwork of her job as a civil servant.

She was a tall woman, her long black hair hidden beneath her hijab, and her eyes, a deep chocolate brown, held a fierce determination. Next to her, Rina slumped in her seat, her gaze flicking between her phone and the crowd of passengers. She was a mirror image of her mother, but with a youthful softness that Aisyah had long since lost.

Suddenly, the hum of the train was punctured by a group of young men, their laughter harsh and grating. They swaggered down the aisle, their eyes scanning the passengers with predatory intent.

The leader, a tall, muscular man with a shaved head and a scar running down his cheek, caught sight of Rina. His eyes narrowed, and a slow, cruel smile spread across his face. He said something to his friends, and they all laughed, their eyes fixed on Rina.

Aisyah looked up, her brows furrowing as she noticed the direction of their gazes. She shifted in her seat, a sense of unease settling in the pit of her stomach. She knew that look, had seen it too many times before.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she watched the group of men approach, their intentions all too clear. She felt a surge of protectiveness towards Rina, who was still blissfully unaware of the danger closing in on her.

Aisyah stood up, her voice firm and commanding. "Leave her alone," she said, her eyes locked onto the leader. He turned to face her, a smirk playing on his lips.

"And who are you, bitch?" he sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. "Her mother?"

Aisyah straightened, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. "I am.

And I said, leave her alone," Aisyah repeated, her voice steely.

The man, who introduced himself as Kwame, chuckled. "Well, well, look what we have here. A feisty one. I like that." He turned to his friends, a wicked glint in his eye. "Boys, I think Mama Bear here needs to be taught a lesson."

Rina shot up from her seat, her eyes wide with fear and anger. "Stop it! Leave her alone!" she shouted, her voice shaking.

Kwame turned his gaze back to Rina, his lip curling into a snarl.

"Sit down, you little bitch. This doesn't concern you."

Aisyah stepped in front of Rina, shielding her daughter from the leering group of men. "She's right, you know. This doesn't concern her. It concerns me. So, I suggest you and your little gang of thugs get the fuck out of here before I make you."

Kwame's face darkened, and he took a step closer to Aisyah, his breath hot and rank on her face. "You want to make us leave, huh?

You think you can?" Kwame sneered, his breath hot on Aisyah's face. She stood her ground, her eyes locked onto his.

"I think I can. And I will."

Kwame laughed, a harsh, ugly sound. "You're a brave one, aren't you? But you're just a little bitch in a stupid uniform. You can't do shit."

Aisyah's heart was pounding in her chest, her palms slick with sweat. But she didn't back down. She couldn't. Not with Rina watching, her eyes filled with tears and fear.

Aisyah had to protect her, no matter what it took. She squared her shoulders, her voice shaking only slightly as she spoke. "You're wrong. And I'm not going to stand here and let you harass my daughter or anyone else on this train."

Kwame's face twisted into a sneer, and he lunged at Aisyah, his fist swinging towards her face. She ducked just in time, his knuckles grazing her cheek. Pain bloomed across her skin, but she didn't let it show. Instead, she lashed out with her own fist, catching him square in the jaw.

He stumbled back, a string of curses spilling from his lips.

"Fucking bitch!" he growled, rubbing his jaw. "You're gonna pay for that."

Aisyah's heart was pounding in her chest, adrenaline coursing through her veins. She was outmatched, outnumbered, and she knew it. But she couldn't back down. Not now. Not ever.

"You'll have to catch me first, asshole," she taunted, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her.

Kwame lunged again, but this time, she was ready.

Aisyah ducked and weaved, avoiding his blows, her heart hammering in her chest. The other men began to circle, their eyes gleaming with malice. She could feel the tension in the carriage, the other passengers frozen in place, watching the scene unfold.

Suddenly, there was a commotion behind them. A group of men, clearly armed and wearing the insignia of the local train security, stormed into the carriage. Kwame's eyes widened, and he backed away from Aisyah, his hands raised in surrender.
