Jim is working on a plantation along with other inmates as part of a court sentence for a crime he was found guilty of committing. The work one day is to haul heavy rocks from one pile to another. Each inmate has their own mound of rocks to move. The warden announces that any man who doesn’t move their complete pile by the end of the day will be stripped naked, tied face down and spread eagle on the ground and whipped 100 lashes by Sully the muscular guard. The story starts with the end of the day and Jim having not moved all his rocks. The guards assistance, also big burly men, are stripping Jim of his clothes in preparation for punishment.

Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The sun was a hammer, and the rock pile was the anvil. Jim felt every blow in the bones of his hands, in the frayed muscles of his back. Each stone he lifted was a small, gray death, the dust coating his throat, his sweat turning it to mud on his skin. The air itself was thick with it, a dry paste you had to chew to breathe.

He worked with a steady, desperate rhythm. Lift, carry, drop. Lift, carry, drop. The pile never seemed to get smaller. It just shifted, a slow, geological migration from one patch of scorched earth to another.

Sully watched from the shade of a stunted pine, his bulk a dark stain against the trunk. He didn’t need to shout. His presence was a constant, low-grade pressure, like a storm front waiting to break.

“Tick-tock, 748,” Sully’s voice cut through the haze, casual as a comment on the weather. “Sun’s almost down. That quota’s looking pretty lonely.”

Jim didn’t look up. He hefted another rock, its jagged edge biting into his palm. “I’m moving as fast as I can.”

“Faster would be better.” Sully pushed off the tree, his boots crunching on the gravel. He moved with a heavy, deliberate grace, a predator who knew the fences were all his. He stopped a few feet from Jim, his shadow falling over him like a shroud. “Looks to me like you’re taking a breather.”

Jim straightened, his spine popping in protest. He met Sully’s flat, empty gaze. “No, sir. Just working.”

Sully’s eyes flicked to the section of the pile Jim was supposed to have cleared. A solid quarter of it remained. A slow, unpleasant smile spread across his face. “Well now. That’s a problem. Rules are rules.”

The other inmates kept their heads down, their movements becoming more frantic. No one wanted to be collateral damage.

“Sully, come on,” Jim said, the plea tasting like ash in his mouth. “You know I’ve been at it all day. My hands are raw.”

“Should’ve thought of that before you decided to be a lazy piece of shit.” Sully closed the distance. He didn’t draw his baton. He never needed to. His hand, thick-fingered and hard as stone, shot out and grabbed a fistful of Jim’s shirt, yanking him forward. “You think this is a negotiation?”

Jim’s instinct was to fight, to shove back, to spit in the man’s face. But fighting meant the box, and the box was a concrete tomb that stole your air and your sanity. He went limp, a dead weight.

It was the wrong move. Sully interpreted it as defiance. With a grunt of effort, he swung Jim around and drove his boot into the back of his knee. Jim’s leg buckled instantly, pain flaring white-hot. He crashed face-first into the jagged stones, the impact driving the air from his lungs. A sharp edge split his cheek open. He could feel the warm trickle of blood.

He gasped, trying to push himself up, but Sully’s weight was on him now, a knee in the small of his back, pinning him to the unforgiving ground. The taste of dirt and copper filled his mouth.

“Let’s make this lesson stick,” Sully whispered, his breath hot and stale by Jim’s ear.

Thick, strong fingers hooked into the waistband of Jim’s trousers. The fabric, worn thin from countless washings, strained for a heartbeat. Then, with one sharp, brutal tug, it gave way. The rip was obscenely loud in the quiet evening. The last barrier was gone. The dry, dusty air hit his exposed skin, a vile and intimate violation.

Jim squeezed his eyes shut. He stopped struggling. The rough stone ground against his cheek, the metallic taste of his own blood sharp on his tongue. He could hear the lazy hum of the cicadas, the distant call of a bird. The world went on, indifferent.

He heard the familiar, dreaded sound of Sully’s belt buckle clicking open. The leather whispered as it was drawn through the loops.

This was the moment. This was where you had to leave your body. You had to go somewhere else, anywhere else. He thought of the creek behind his childhood home, the cool water over smooth stones. He thought of his mother’s voice.

The first crack of the belt was a line of pure fire across his back. He jerked, a strangled sound escaping his clenched teeth. He bit down on his lip, hard.

The second lash came, overlapping the first. The pain wasn't separate anymore; it was a single, expanding wave of agony.

Sully didn’t speak. He just worked. Each strike was measured, practiced. The only sounds were the whistle of the leather, the wet thwack as it connected, and Jim’s ragged, choked breathing.

He lost count. The world narrowed to the stone beneath his face and the fire on his back. The cicadas droned on. The sun dipped lower, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange.

Finally, it stopped.

The weight lifted from his back. Jim didn’t move. He couldn’t. He heard the rustle of Sully adjusting his clothes, the buckle clicking shut.

A boot nudged his side, not hard, but with a final, contemptuous dismissiveness.

“Quota’s still there tomorrow, 748,” Sully said, his voice even again, all business. “Don’t be late.”

His heavy footsteps receded, crunching on the gravel until the sound was swallowed by the growing dark.

Jim lay there for a long time, until the heat of the day began to leach from the stones and a deep, penetrating chill set in. Slowly, every movement a fresh jolt of pain, he pushed himself up. His trousers were ruined, hanging in tatters. He pulled them up as best he could, the coarse fabric scraping against the welts.

He stood, swaying, his body a single, throbbing wound. The rock pile stood before him, immutable, a dark silhouette against the twilight. The section he hadn’t moved seemed to mock him, a testament to the futility of it all. The stones he had moved were just a down payment on a debt that would never be paid.

He took a shaky breath, the air cool in his lungs. Then he turned and began the slow, painful walk back toward the barracks, each step a reminder. The rocks were still there. They would always be there.

At the barracks, inmate Jackson was waiting - cruel smile on his face, and holding a large, heavy paddle in his right hand.

The warden was there too ready to announce what was about to happen to Jim.

The warden was a short man, balding, with cold eyes that held no sympathy. He stood behind Jackson, his arms folded, an unlit cigar clenched between his teeth.

“Jim, Jim, Jim,” he said, shaking his head. “Can’t you just follow the rules? Or at least try to?”

Jim stood stiffly, his back to the warden, his gaze fixed on Jackson. He knew better than to turn his back on Sully, but right now, the warden was a lesser threat. He could feel the blood from his cheek trickling down his neck, the cool night air drying it into sticky trails.

Behind him, the warden still droned on, a bass hum of disapproval and disappointment. Jim didn't bother to respond. He knew better than to give the warden the satisfaction of an argument.

Instead, he focused on Jackson. The other inmate lounged against the barracks wall, the paddle balanced in his hand like a prop. He looked almost bored, but Jim knew better. Jackson had been waiting for this. He lived for this.

"Please, Warden," Jim said, his voice barely above a whisper, "I can't. Not again.

“Listen up men,” the Warden announces to all the prisoners who had gathered to watch Jim be punished. “Jim here is going to wish he completed his job today. Inmate Jackson is going to paddle his naked ass 100 swats, and then Jim will be staked to the ground face down to receive 100 lashes from Sully. Let this be an example to all of what happens when you don’t do as you’re told!” The Warden’s voice echoed in the cold night air, a harsh, unyielding tone that cut through the murmurs of the assembled prisoners. They watched, their eyes gleaming with a mix of fascination, fear, and morbid curiosity.

Jim stood tall, his jaw clenched, refusing to give the Warden the satisfaction of seeing him cowed. He knew what was coming. He had seen it happen to others. He had heard the screams, the pleas, the thud of flesh on wood, the crack of leather.

He had seen the aftermath - the blood, the welts, the broken men. But knowing and experiencing were two different things.

Jackson pushed off the wall, a cruel gleam in his eyes. "Come on, Jim. You know the drill. Pants down. Hands on the wall."

Jim's hands clenched into fists at his sides. He wanted to fight, to run, to do anything but submit. But he knew better. He was outnumbered, outmatched, and out of options. Slowly, he turned to face the wall, his hands reaching up to grip the rough wooden slats.

Jim stripped his clothes off - including his underwear, and bent over the paddling bench that was set up. His bare ass exposed and ready for the onslaught of swats Jackson was about to lay on him.

Jackson walked up behind him, the paddle held loosely in his right hand. The paddle was thick, about two inches wide, with holes drilled through it to create a resonating sound when it hit flesh. It was made of hardwood, polished smooth and glossy. Jim could feel the cold air against his naked body, raising goosebumps on his skin.

"You know what I like about my job?" Jackson asked, his voice low and almost friendly. "I get to do things like this. Make you hurt. Make you scream." He traced the paddle lightly down Jim's spine, stopping just above his ass. "You ready, Jim?

Cause I'm itching to get started." Jackson's voice was a low growl, a predatory rumble that sent a shiver down Jim's spine. He could feel the paddle hovering over his bare ass, the wood cool against the heat of his skin. He closed his eyes, bracing himself.

The first swat landed with a resounding crack, the force of it jarring his teeth. The pain was immediate, a white-hot flare that blossomed across his ass cheeks. He gritted his teeth, determined not to make a sound.

But the second swat caught him off guard, the paddle biting deeper, the sting radiating outward like a shockwave. A harsh, guttural sound escaped him before he could stop it. It wasn’t a scream, but it was close. Jackson chuckled, a low and menacing sound.

“That’s it,” he said, his voice a dark purr. “Let’s hear you.”

The paddle came down again, harder this time. Jim’s fingers curled around the rough wood of the bench, his knuckles turning white.

The paddle came down again, the skin on his ass already feeling hot and raw. He bit back a cry, but it escaped him as a strangled groan. The sound of the paddle, the smell of dust and sweat, the feel of the cool night air on his bare back—it was all overwhelming.

Jackson laughed, a cold, harsh sound. “Come on, Jim. Don’t be a fucking pussy. You can take more than that.”

Jim gritted his teeth, his whole body tense. The next swat was even harder, the paddle landing with a crack that seemed to vibrate through his whole body. He couldn’t hold it back anymore.

A scream ripped from his throat, raw and primal. Jackson laughed again, a sound that echoed through Jim’s head like a mallet striking a gong.

The swats came faster now, a relentless barrage that filled the air with the sharp crack of wood on flesh. Jim lost count after a while, his mind fracturing under the assault. The pain was all-consuming, a wildfire that burned through his body, consuming everything in its path.

His ass was on fire, a throbbing, pulsating inferno. Every nerve ending screamed in agony, each swat a fresh lick of flame.

Jim could feel the blood rushing to the surface of his skin, his ass swelling and growing more tender with each blow. His breath came in ragged gasps, his body trembling under the assault.

Jackson was panting too, his breath coming in harsh grunts with each swing of the paddle. “You’re a tough one, Jim,” he said between swats. “But I’ll break you. I always do.”

The paddle came down again, this time landing on the sensitive spot where his thighs met his ass. Jim howled, the pain so intense it made him see stars.

He couldn't hold back anymore; his body convulsed with each swing of the paddle, each crack echoing through his mind like a war drum. His ass felt like it was on fire, like it was being ripped to shreds. He could feel the blood trickling down his thighs, sticky and hot.

“Please,” he begged, his voice ragged and hoarse. “Please, no more.”

Jackson laughed, a cold and cruel sound. “You know the drill, Jim. One hundred swats. You ain’t even halfway there yet.”

The paddle came down again, and Jim screamed.

He couldn’t hold it back anymore; his body was racked with pain, and each swing of the paddle drove him closer to the edge of sanity.

Jackson was merciless, his swats coming faster and harder. Jim lost count of the blows, his mind fracturing under the assault.

“Please,” Jim begged, his voice ragged and hoarse.

The swats continued. Jackson paddle Jim with a passion. After the the 100th swat, Jackson stepped back and the Warden and Sully, holding a long razor strap in his hand, appeared.

They escorted Jim to a desolate part of the prison yard, where a wooden stake was driven into the ground.

“Face down,” Sully ordered. Jim complied, his body shaky and weak. The cool night air hit his battered ass, sending fresh waves of pain through him. He could feel the blood from his earlier wounds dripping down his thighs, a sickening reminder of what was still to come.

Sully secured his wrists and ankles to the stake with thick rope, ensuring he was spread-eagle and immobile.

The night air was cold, a stark contrast to the heat of his beaten flesh. Jim shivered, his body taut with anticipation and dread.

Sully circled him like a predator, the leather strap slapping against his palm. The sound echoed through the night, a harsh, leathery whisper that made Jim’s heart race.

“You know the rules, 748,” Sully said, his voice low and menacing. “You don’t complete your quota, you pay the price.” He ran a hand down Jim’s back, his touch leaving a trail of heat.

“Warden, permission to administer 120 lashes on this disgraceful inmate,” Sulky asks. “Granted Sully. Remember, leave some meat on the bone for tomorrow”, Warden answers.

Jim gritted his teeth as he felt the first lash of the strap against his already raw and bleeding back. It felt like a white-hot branding iron being pressed into his flesh. He let out a guttural scream, his body arching in pain.

“Fuck!” he yelled, tears streaming down his face. “You fucking bastard!”

Sully chuckled, the sound low and cruel.

The next lash landed squarely on Jim’s already paddled ass.

The leather dug into the tender flesh, and he howled, a sound filled with agony and desperation. The pain was intense, a searing, white-hot agony that radiated outward like a wildfire. His body jerked against the ropes, but they held firm, biting into his wrists and ankles.

Sully circled him like a wolf, the sting from the strap rising and falling with his arm. Each time it connected, Jim’s body convulsed, his muscles tensing and then releasing in a futile attempt to escape the pain.

He could feel the welts rising on his back, the skin splitting and bleeding beneath the relentless onslaught.

The stench of his own sweat and the metallic tang of blood filled his nostrils, each breath a ragged, whispered prayer for mercy. But mercy was a foreign concept in this place.

Sully continued his assault, his arm rising and falling in a steady, mechanical rhythm. Each lash was precise, calculated, designed to inflict the most amount of damage with the least amount of effort.

“Please, Sully,” Jim begged, his voice hoarse and raw.
