Chapter 1: Introduction
The sun was a bright, warm spot on the back of Tim's neck as he strolled through the campus he had called home for the better part of three decades. The cobblestone paths were familiar, the scent of freshly cut grass a comforting constant. He missed the hustle and bustle of the classroom, the eager faces of students ready to learn and question. Retirement suited him well, but there was something about the vitality of campus life that was undeniably invigorating.
As he rounded the corner near the library, he nearly collided with a trio of young women, each armed with a stack of books and a cup of coffee.
They were deep in conversation, their laughter echoing through the air. Tim recognized them instantly, even though it had been a few years since he'd last seen them in his classroom. There was Hailey, the studious one, her long black hair pulled back into a practical ponytail, her eyes behind a pair of wire-framed glasses. Sabrina, the outgoing one, her curly black hair bouncing with every step, her laughter infectious. And Mikela, the artistic one, her tall frame draped in a bohemian-style dress, her large breasts accentuated by the silhouette.
She was the one who noticed him first, her big brown eyes widening in recognition. "Professor G!" she exclaimed, her voice a mix of surprise and delight. "What are you doing here?"
Tim grinned, his neatly trimmed gray beard crinkling as he smiled. "Well, well, if it isn't my favorite sorority sisters," he said, his voice warm and approachable. "I could ask you the same thing, Mikela. Shouldn't you be in class?"
Mikela rolled her eyes dramatically, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. "Oh, please.
We're seniors now, Tim," Sabrina chimed in, her curly hair bouncing as she gestured with her coffee. "We're basically adults. We can handle a little coffee break."
Hailey, ever the voice of reason, added, "We actually have a free period before our next class. We were just heading to the café."
"Well, in that case," Tim said, glancing at his watch, "I believe I have time to join you. I've been told the coffee here is quite good."
The girls exchanged glances, and Mikela's eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Only if you promise to tell us the most scandalous story from your days as a professor," she said, her voice teasing.
Tim chuckled, leaning in slightly, "Deal. But only if you promise to fill me in on what you've been up to since I last saw you."
Hailey linked her arm through his as they walked, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "You're in for a treat, Professor. We've got plenty of stories to share."
As they approached the campus café, the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air.
The café buzzed with the low hum of student chatter and the rhythmic hiss of the espresso machine. Tim followed the girls inside, the familiar scent of roasted beans and steamed milk wrapping around him like an old friend. They snagged a corner booth, Mikela sliding in first, followed by Sabrina, then Hailey. Tim took the chair opposite, his gaze sweeping over their animated faces.
"So," Sabrina began, leaning forward conspiratorially, her dark curls framing her face. "Scandalous professor stories. You promised, Tim. Don't hold back." Her eyes sparkled with mischief.
Tim chuckled, stirring a packet of sugar into his black coffee. "Scandalous? My dear Sabrina, academia is rarely as salacious as popular fiction would have you believe. Mostly it involves departmental politics and the occasional plagiarism scandal that feels more tragic than thrilling."
Hailey nudged Sabrina playfully. "See? Told you he'd disappoint." She took a sip of her latte. "But seriously, Professor G, it's so good to see you. We were just talking about our favorite professors the other day."
"Oh?" Tim raised an eyebrow, genuinely curious. "And did I make the cut?"
"You were definitely mentioned," Mikela said, her voice softer than Sabrina's, a slight blush creeping up her neck. She fiddled with the sleeve of her flowy top. "Especially that lecture you gave on ethical dilemmas in historical narratives. It stuck with me."
"Glad to hear it," Tim replied, warmth spreading through him. He missed this – the spark of engagement, the feeling of passing something meaningful along. "And what about you three? Seniors! That feels momentous. Hailey, still conquering pre-med?"
Hailey nodded, pushing her glasses up her nose. "Trying to. Organic Chemistry is trying its best to break me. Finals are looming like a dark cloud."
Sabrina groaned dramatically. "Don't remind me! My journalism capstone project is eating my soul. I have to profile three radically different campus subcultures. Yesterday I spent two hours trying to infiltrate the competitive chess club. They were... suspiciously intense."
Tim laughed. "And Mikela? Still bringing the house down on stage?"
Mikela ducked her head slightly, a shy smile playing on her lips. "Trying. We're doing 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' next month. I'm Helena." She paused, then added with a hint of her usual sarcasm, "So, lots of angst about being t
