Chapter 4: The Awkward Shift

The jar became part of the landscape. A small, clear monument on the cluttered nightstand, next to a half-empty glass of water and a tangle of charging cables. For three days, the ritual held. My alarm would buzz at 6:55. I’d groan, roll over, and take care of business into the jar with a grim, utilitarian focus. By the time Stu’s blender started its war cry at 7:05, the sample would be sitting on the kitchen counter next to his protein tin. We didn’t speak about it. The exchange was silent, clinical. He’d blend, drink, and leave. I’d go back to sleep.

On the fourth day, I fucked it up.

I’d been out late. My head was a woolly mess of cheap beer and bad decisions. When my alarm screamed, I smashed it into silence and plunged back into a deep, dreamless hole.

The next thing I knew, it was the sound of the front door clicking shut that woke me. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded my system. The clock read 7:15. He was back from his warm-up run. He’d be expecting the jar. It’d be part of his sequencing now, a critical step in his pre-workout psych-up. He’d go to the kitchen, see it wasn’t there, and…

“Shit, shit, shit.”

I scrambled out of bed, my heart hammering against my ribs. I fumbled for the jar, my hands clumsy with sleep. This wasn’t the leisurely, half-asleep routine. This was an emergency extraction. I kicked my boxers off, leaned against the dresser for balance, and started working myself with a frantic, rough urgency. The mindset was all wrong. It was panic, not release. I was trying to force a mechanical process, my brain screaming about timelines and Stu’s rigid, disappointed face.

I heard the shower turn on down the hall. He was back. Cleaning up. He’d be out in three minutes flat. The pressure mounted. Come on. Come on.

Finally, a semblance of feeling sparked, a dull response to the frantic friction. I was getting there, a tense, unhappy buildup, my eyes screwed shut, my breathing ragged.

My bedroom door flew open.

I froze. My hand still wrapped around myself, mid-stroke. Stu stood in the doorway, a white towel wrapped around his waist, his hair dark and dripping onto his shoulders. He was gleaming, flushed from his run and the shower. He was looking for the jar.

His eyes locked onto me. Then they travelled down.

For a stretched, silent second, nothing happened. The world narrowed to the open door, the damp man standing in it, and the crude, exposed reality of what I was doing. The sound of water dripping from his hair onto the floorboards was absurdly loud. Tick. Tick. Tick.

His face went through a series of minute, catastrophic shifts. Confusion, as his brain parsed the scene instead of the expected jar. Then dawning, horrific comprehension. His usual stern mask dissolved into something raw and unguarded. His lips parted slightly. But he didn’t look away. He didn’t bolt. His gaze was fixed, utterly arrested, on my cock, which was still thick and full in my hand, betrayed by the interrupted momentum.

A violent blush erupted across his chest, climbing his neck. But his eyes didn’t move.

“The protocol,” he said, his voice strangely flat, stripped of all its usual calculated intensity.

“I’m—I’m working on it,” I managed to croak out, finally dropping my hand, instinctively turning my hips away. The sudden modesty felt ridiculous, too late. The heat in my own face was overwhelming.

He didn’t acknowledge my movement. His stare was analytical, yet completely devoid of clinical distance. It was hungry. Voracious. He was seeing the source, not the sample.

“How…” He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “How big is it?”

The question hung in the air, stupid and profound. It wasn’t a locker-room boast. It wasn’t a joke. It was a quiet, genuine inquiry. He needed the data.

I let out a shaky, incredulous laugh. “What?”

“The size. What’s the measurement?”

I just stared at him. The towel around his waist seemed suddenly precarious. The tension in the room was a live wire, thrumming between us. “I don’t know, Stu. I don’t measure my dick. It’s… big. Okay? It’s just big.”

He nodded slowly, as if filing the subjective report away under ‘acceptable parameters’. His eyes finally lifted to meet mine. There was a shadow there, something darker and more perplexed than gratitude. A kind of awestruck resentment. Then, without another word, he turned and walked out, leaving the door wide open.

I stood there, exposed and trembling, for a full minute before I slowly pushed the door shut. I finished the job into the jar, my hands shaking, the act now feeling deeply, irrevocably weird. When I placed it on the counter, he was already in his room, door closed. The blender never whirred that morning. He left for the gym in a silence that felt heavier than any conversation.

The dynamic didn’t just shift after that. It fractured, and reformed into something new and fragile.

He stopped bursting into my room. He’d knock now, a soft, tentative rap, and wait. But his eyes had developed a new habit. They would find my crotch. Every time we passed in the hall, when we sat on opposite sides of the sofa watching TV, when I was lounging in loose sweatpants. It wasn’t a leer. It was a glance, quick and sharp, like he was checking a gauge or confirming a detail. He’d look, and then his own cheeks would flush faintly, and he’d look away, his jaw tight.

The spoken questions stopped. But the unspoken ones multiplied, filling the apartment. They were in the way he lingered near the kitchen after I’d delivered the jar, as if waiting for more. In the way he’d sometimes just stare at me while I was talking, his focus not on my words but on my mouth, my hands, tracing the line of my body as if trying to solve an equation.

Once, I caught him standing by the open fridge, not taking anything out, just staring blankly at the shelves. The cold light washed over his face. “It’s not just the protein,” he said, to the yogurts and the spinach. “It’s the androgen profile. The specific density. It has to be.”

He shook his head and closed the door, not acknowledging I was there.

The ritual continued. The jar was filled. The shakes were consumed. His physique became almost alarmingly etched, his energy a constant, low hum. But the transaction was no longer clean. A new element had been introduced, witnessed in that raw, interrupted moment: the source itself. And Stu, for all his clinical terminology, couldn’t stop looking at it. He was mapping the topography of the well, and the map was starting to fascinate him more than the water he drew from it.
