Chapter 1: The Scarred Mirror

Steam coiled in the air, soft and scentless, catching the low light from the gold sconces. Mehdi stood before the mirror, his fingers trembling as they traced the fresh, tender lines below his navel. The scars were still pink, a roadmap of profound change. He let his hands drift lower, through the neat triangle of dark hair, to the new warmth and softness there.

His reflection held him. Long black hair, still damp from the shower, clung to his shoulders and the sides of his breasts. The silver hoop in his nose glinted. He stared, mesmerized by the flat plane of his stomach, the curve of his hips, the full weight of his chest. A shaky breath fogged the glass.

The bathroom door whispered open. Ashraf filled the space, all muscle and quiet power, water beading on the dark hair of her chest and arms. She moved behind him, a solid, warm presence, and met his eyes in the mirror.

“Still getting used to the view?” Her voice was lower now, a rasp that vibrated against his back.

Mehdi nodded, his throat tight. “It’s real. It’s really real.”

“I watched every minute of it,” Ashraf said, her hands coming to rest on his hips. Her touch was possessive, grounding. “I held your hand while they put you under. I saw them make you whole.” She leaned in, her lips brushing the shell of his ear. “Every single step.”

He leaned back into her, feeling the rough hair of her forearms against his smoother skin. The contrast was electric. He watched her hands slide upwards, over his belly, to cup his breasts. Her thumbs brushed his nipples and a jolt went straight to his core.

“Yours,” she whispered.

“Yours,” he breathed back.

One of her hands left his chest, finding his wrist. She guided his hand down, over the taut muscle of her abdomen, lower. Her fingers wrapped around his, pressing them against the thick, hot length of her cock. Mehdi’s breath hitched.

“Feel that,” Ashraf commanded, her voice a growl. “That’s all for you. All this power,” she gave his hand a squeeze, “it’s just to worship you.”

A laugh bubbled out of Mehdi, part relief, part sheer giddy shock. “Remember your little cocktail dick?” he teased, his head falling back against her shoulder. “I used to feel sorry for it.”

Ashraf snorted, her hips shifting, pushing her hardness more firmly into his palm. “That pathetic thing? Please. It was a shrimp. A nervous shrimp.” She nuzzled his neck. “You were no better. All that fussing. That clumsy, sweaty… performance.”

“I was a terrible man,” Mehdi sighed, the admission laced with genuine delight. “So anxious. So tight in my own skin.”

“You were,” she agreed, not unkindly. “And I was a stone. A polite, smiling stone.” She turned him around, her hands strong on his shoulders. Her eyes, fierce and loving, searched his. “Look at us now.”

He did. He saw the raw strength in her, the comfortable dominance. He saw himself in her gaze: open, pliant, shimmering with a need he no longer had to hide.

“I’m so horny all the time now,” he confessed, the words muffled against her collarbone. “It’s like my whole body is just… awake.”

“Good.” The word was final. In one smooth motion, Ashraf’s hands were under his thighs, and she lifted him as if he weighed nothing. The cold, polished black marble of the vanity counter met his skin. She stepped between his legs, pushing them wider with her hips.

The etched glass of the shower was still fogged. The steam hung around them like a private cloud.

“This,” Ashraf said, guiding herself into him with a slow, inexorable pressure, “is the only thing that weak, old version of you was good for. Leading me here. To this.”

Mehdi cried out, a sharp, grateful sound. His hands flew to her shoulders, gripping the hard muscle there. It was different. Deeper. The stretch was intense, overwhelming in a way that made his head swim. He was so vulnerably open, impaled on the very symbol of her transformation.

“Every inch,” she panted, beginning to move with a deliberate, rolling rhythm, “is made for you. To rewrite every memory he left.” She drove deeper, and Mehdi’s back arched. “This is your body now. And I,” she grunted, picking up pace, slamming him against the mirror, “am your man.”

The crude, perfect truth of it shattered him. His climax wasn’t a peak, but a surrender, a wave that pulled him under from the inside out. He melted against the cold mirror, held upright only by her body pinning his.

Ashraf followed, her own release a shudder and a deep, satisfied groan against his throat. For a long moment, the only sounds were their ragged breaths and the distant drip of the showerhead.

She didn’t pull away. She kept him there, pressed against the glass, her weight a delicious burden. She kissed his shoulder, his jaw, his temple.

“We should get married,” she murmured into his skin.

Mehdi, still floating, laughed softly. “We are married.”

“No.” Ashraf finally leaned back, her hands coming up to frame his face. Her eyes were serious, blazing. “He married her. That’s done. I want to marry you. This you.” Her thumb stroked his cheekbone. “I want to walk into some gaudy hall with you in a scandalous red lehenga, and me in a stupid sherwani, and do the whole thing again. Properly.”

Tears, hot and sudden, welled in Mehdi’s eyes. They were tears of pure, uncomplicated joy. He wrapped his legs around her waist, pulling her close again, feeling her soften inside him.

“Yes,” he whispered. “Let’s do it. Let’s do everything.”

Ashraf smiled, her old smile, but on this new, fierce face. It held every future they’d almost been too afraid to name. She lifted him off the counter easily, carrying him, not to the bed, but back toward the still-steaming shower. The water would be warm. They had time. They had all the time in the world, now, to learn each other all over again.

The hot water was a shock, then a relief. It sluiced over them, tracing the lines of Ashraf’s shoulders, running in rivulets down the valley between Mehdi’s breasts. She kept him pressed close, her arms locked under his thighs, his back against the cool, etched glass. The steam thickened, enclosing them in a private, sound-damped world.

“I’m not going to break,” Mehdi murmured, nipping at her earlobe. His voice was hoarse.

“I know,” Ashraf said, but she didn’t loosen her grip. Her eyes traced his face, as if memorizing it anew. “It’s just… I want to feel all of it. Every shiver.” Her hips moved in a subtle, shallow rhythm, a ghost of their previous passion. “Does it hurt?”

“The good kind of hurt.” He let his head fall back against the glass with a soft thunk. “Like finally stretching a muscle that’s been cramped for decades.”

A laugh rumbled through her chest, vibrating into his. “You were so cramped. My God. You used to fold into yourself like a deckchair.”

“And you used to stand like a guard at a tomb.” He grinned, running his fingers through the dense, dark hair on her chest. “Very dignified. Very repressed.”

“It was exhausting.” She dipped her head, catching a droplet of water from his collarbone with her tongue. The simple act sent a fresh spark through him. “This isn’t exhausting. This is… easy. Even when it’s intense, it’s easy. Does that make sense?”

He knew exactly what she meant. The performance was over. The script had been burned. What was left was this uncomplicated hunger, this profound relief.

He shifted in her arms, the movement making them both gasp. “Put me down.”

She obliged, lowering him until his feet found the textured floor. The water beat down on his shoulders. He turned, facing her, his gaze deliberate. Then he sank to his knees.

The sight of him there, eyes looking up through wet lashes, water plastering his hair to his skull, made Ashraf’s breath catch. She reached for him, but he caught her hands, pinning them gently to her sides.

“My turn,” he said. His voice was quiet, but it held a new thread of certainty.

He didn’t rush. He explored the landscape of her: the powerful thighs, the thatch of dark hair, the heavy, soft weight of her cock, already stirring again under his attention. He nuzzled the inside of her thigh, breathing her in—soap, sweat, and something utterly, uniquely her.

“You’re so fucking handsome,” he whispered against her skin.

The word handsome hung in the steam. It was a word from their old world, repurposed. It fit her now, perfectly.

He took her into his mouth, slowly, learning the shape and heft of her. Ashraf’s hands flew to his head, not pushing, just tangling in the wet strands. A low, broken sound escaped her.

“Mehdi…”

He hummed in response, the vibration pulling another ragged groan from her. He felt powerful here, on his knees. This wasn’t submission. It was curation. He was learning the instrument of her pleasure, and in doing so, commanding it.

It didn’t take long. Her climax was a tensing of every muscle, a choked-off cry that echoed off the marble. He stayed with her through it, until her hands gently tugged him back up.

He rose, water streaming down his body, a smug, satisfied smile on his lips. Ashraf stared at him, dazed, panting.

“Where did you learn that?” she finally managed.

“I didn’t.” He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I just thought about what I would have liked. Back when I had the… equipment. I was never very imaginative with it, to be honest.”

She barked a laugh, pulling him into a crushing embrace. “You’re a natural.”

They washed each other after, the act simple and domestic and utterly surreal. Mehdi lathered soap over the dense hair on her forearms. Ashraf carefully washed his scars, her touch reverent.

Wrapped in thick, terrycloth robes, they stood before the foggy mirror again. Ashraf swiped a clear circle with her palm.

“Look,” she said.

They looked. A woman with pierced nostrils and knowing eyes. A man with a strong jaw and a possessive hand on her hip.

“We should tell someone,” Mehdi said softly. “My sister, maybe.”

“We will. Next week.” Ashraf kissed his temple. “Tonight… tonight I just want you to myself. I want to order stupidly expensive food and eat it in bed. I want to feel you fall asleep on my chest.”

“Your chest is very hairy. It tickles.”

“You’ll get used to it.” She turned him from the mirror, leading him out of the bathroom, the plush rug soft under their feet. The bedroom was cool and dark. “It’s part of the package.”

They fell onto the sheets in a tangle of limbs and damp fabric. The city lights glittered beyond the window, a distant, indifferent world.

Mehdi sprawled on his stomach, his robe falling open. Ashraf’s hand stroked the length of his spine, from the nape of his neck to the base of his spine.

“Do you ever… miss it?” she asked quietly. Her fingers stilled.

He knew what she meant. The ghost limb. The old identity.

He thought for a long moment. The silence was comfortable.

“No,” he said finally, and the truth of it was a clean, bright thing inside him. “I miss the idea of him sometimes. The safety of that character. But him? The actual him?” He shook his head against the pillow. “He was so lonely. He never knew you, not really. He never knew me.”

Ashraf’s hand resumed its journey, warm and sure. “Good.”

“What about you?” He rolled over to look at her. “Do you miss being… gentle?”

Her smile was slow, a little feral in the dim light. “I am gentle. I’m gentle with you.” She leaned over him, caging him with her arms. “But I was never strong before. Not like this. I don’t miss feeling like a ghost in my own life.”

He reached up, tracing the line of her brow. “So what’s next? Besides the scandalous red lehenga.”

“Everything.” She captured his hand, kissing his palm, his painted fingertips. “I’m thinking of taking up boxing. Seriously.”

He laughed. “Of course you are.”

“And you?” she asked, settling beside him, pulling him into the crook of her arm. His head found its perfect spot on her shoulder.

“I don’t know yet.” He breathed in her scent, now clean and warm. “Something quiet, maybe. Something that doesn’t require a suit.” He paused. “I think I want to learn how to cook something that isn’t pasta.”

“A revolutionary goal.”

He pinched her side, and she yelped, then chuckled. The sound vibrated through him.

Outside, a siren wailed, fading into the night. In here, there was only their breathing, the rustle of sheets, the steady, comforting thump of her heart under his ear. The future was a wide, open door, and they were already walking through it, together, leaving the husks of their old selves behind in the steam and the shadow of a bathroom they had forever changed. For the first time in his life—in their lives—the quiet didn’t feel like waiting. It felt like peace.
