Chapter 1: Introduction

The heat of the Roman sun was intense, a constant companion that painted the marble buildings with a golden glow. The chatter of merchants hawking their wares filled the air, mingling with the clattering of chariots and the distant roar of the Colosseum. In this bustling city, where time seemed to stand still and history was literally carved into the stone streets, Lucius walked with a stride that was both confident and uncertain.

He was a man out of time, a 22-year-old who had fallen through a wormhole and landed in ancient Rome.

Some days, he still pinched himself, wondering if it was all a dream. But the sun-baked heat, the smell of the Forum - a heady mix of sweat, spices, and roasting meat - it was all real. Too real.

Lucius leaned against a pillar, his tunic billowing slightly in the breeze. He watched the crowd, a sea of togas and tunics, slaves and nobles. His eyes scanned the faces, searching for something, or someone. He wasn't sure what.

A deep voice cut through the noise.

"You're looking for someone, aren't you?" The voice was gruff, yet not unkind. Lucius turned to see a man standing next to him, a muscular figure with a dusting of dark hair across his forearms. He wore a simple tunic, stained with sweat and dust, and a leather belt slung low around his waist. The man was tall, his shoulders broad, and his hair was cropped short, a stark contrast to Lucius' own unruly curls.

Lucius raised an eyebrow. "And why would you think that?"

The man grinned, showing a set of straight white teeth.

"Because you've been doing it since I arrived."

Lucius chuckled, appreciating the directness. "Fair enough. I was looking for someone, actually. A gladiator, they said. Champion of the arena."

The man's grin widened. "That'd be me. John, at your service." He extended a hand, strong and calloused.

Lucius took it, feeling the firm grip. "Lucius. I've heard great things about you, John. I'm new to the city, and I thought perhaps we could... talk business."

John nodded, his gaze sharp and assessing. "Business, you say.

I like the sound of that." John's eyes gleamed with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. He leaned against the pillar, mirroring Lucius' casual pose. "But first, tell me, why would a young noble like yourself be interested in the likes of me?"

Lucius smiled, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief. "A man of your... stature is hard to ignore, John. Besides, I have a small problem, and I think you might be able to help."

John raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "And what problem might that be?

If it's about the arena, I'm afraid I'm not fighting today. But I'm always up for a good challenge." John's voice was low, yet filled with a certain charisma that caught Lucius' attention.

Lucius hesitated, unsure of how to broach the subject. But he knew that beating around the bush was not his style. "It's not about the arena, John. It's...personal."

John's expression turned interested. "Personal, hmm? Well, I'm all ears."

Lucius took a deep breath before continuing, "I'm married, you see.

My wife, Elara, she's... beautiful. The most beautiful woman I've ever seen." He paused, his voice thick with emotion. "But there's a problem. Something's wrong with me, and I... I can't give her what she deserves."

John's expression softened, understanding dawning in his eyes. "You can't give her a child, is that it?"

Lucius nodded, a hint of shame in his voice. "It's not for lack of trying. But... I'm cursed, it seems. And Elara, she wants a family.

She wants a child of her own to hold and love." Lucius' voice trailed off, his gaze fixed on a distant point in the crowd.

John's expression turned thoughtful. He looked at Lucius, his eyes searching. "And you want me to... what? Impregnate your wife?"

Lucius met John's gaze, his expression a mix of desperation and hope. "I know it's a lot to ask. But I trust you, John. I've seen your... prowess in the arena.

You're a champion, John. And I need a champion. For Elara. For us." Lucius's voice was steady, yet vulnerable, as if he was laying his heart bare.

John's expression was unreadable, his gaze unfocused as he considered Lucius's words. The crowd around them continued to buzz with activity, oblivious to the intimate conversation unfolding between the two men.

Finally, John spoke, his voice low and measured. "It's not something I've ever done before, Lucius. I mean, I've had my share of women, but never like that. Never with the intention of...

making a child." John's voice was gruff, a slight blush creeping up his neck as he admitted his hesitation.

Lucius nodded, understanding. "I know it's a big ask, John. But I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important. Elara, she's... she's everything to me. And I want to give her this. I want to give her a family."

John looked at Lucius, his expression serious. "And what about you? How will you feel, knowing that another man is... is with your wife?"

Lucius sighed, running a hand through his curls. "Honestly, John?

It's a thought that makes me jealous, makes my blood boil. But at the same time, it fills me with a sense of relief, of hope. I want Elara to have what she desires most. And if that means... If that means sacrificing my pride, then so be it. As long as she's happy, I'm happy." Lucius's eyes were sincere, his voice filled with a raw emotion that was almost palpable.

John nodded, soaking in Lucius's words. He understood the depth of Lucius's feelings, the complexity of his emotions.

After a moment of silence, John nodded, his expression resolute. "Alright, Lucius. I'll do it. I'll help you and your wife."

John's voice was firm, his decision made. He looked into Lucius's eyes, a silent understanding passing between them. "But I must tell you, Lucius, I've never had a master other than the one who bought me. I don't know how I'll fare under new ownership."

Lucius smiled, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Ah, but that's the thing, John. You won't be under new ownership. I've already spoken to your current master. He's agreed to transfer your ownership to me. So, I'm not just asking for your help, John. I'm asking you to join my household, to be a part of my family."

John's eyes widened in surprise. He had not expected this turn of events. He looked at Lucius, studying his face for any sign of deceit. "You've done this already?

Without even asking me?" John's voice was a mix of surprise and cautiousness.

Lucius chuckled, breaking the tension. "I had to be sure, John. I had to know that you were mine before I could even consider this. And I'm sorry if it seems like I've gone behind your back, but I couldn't risk losing you. And I couldn't risk losing Elara's happiness."

John considered Lucius's words, his gaze lingering on the younger man's face. He could see the sincerity in his eyes, the desperation that drove him to make such a bold move. He nodded, his expression softening.

"You're a bold one, Lucius. I'll give you that. But I understand your desperation. And I respect it." He paused, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Besides, it's not every day a gladiator gets to live in a nobleman's villa and bed a noblewoman."

Lucius laughed, shaking his head. "You make it sound so simple, John. But there's more to it than just that. Elara... she's not just any woman. She's... she's gentle and kind, fiercely intelligent, and incredibly beautiful.

You'll understand when you meet her."

John nodded, his grin fading into a more thoughtful expression. "I see. Well, in that case, I'll treat her with the utmost respect, Lucius. She deserves nothing less."

Lucius placed a hand on John's shoulder, appreciative of his understanding. "I know you will, John. And for that, I'm grateful. Shall we go to the villa? I want you to meet Elara. Tonight, perhaps?"

John nodded, his gaze scanning the Forum as if committing the scene to memory. "Tonight it is.

Give me a few hours to prepare myself, and then I'll meet you at your villa." John's voice was steady, revealing none of the nervousness that Lucius could sense beneath the surface.

Lucius nodded. "Of course. I'll send a slave to escort you when it's time. They'll know where to find you."

John grinned, clapping Lucius on the back. "See you tonight, then.

And Lucius?"

Lucius paused, turning back to face John. "Yes?"

"Don't worry. I'll take care of her. I promise."

Lucius smiled, a weight lifting from his shoulders.
