Chapter 2: Mirrored Climax Through the Wall
The silence after the storm had been worse. In the clear, hungover light of the next morning, Makayla had moved through her conference sessions like a specter. The words of the keynote speaker blurred into a meaningless hum. Her hand, resting on her notepad, felt foreign, the same hand that had, in the dark, touched her with a stranger’s urgency. A flush of shame would creep up her neck during quiet moments, remembering the bite of her own teeth into her lip, the frantic, hidden crescendo that had left her trembling and slick.
Now, back in the room after a late dinner with colleagues, the space felt charged. She had opened the window a crack, letting in the cool night air and the distant sigh of the city. She changed into a simple cotton sleep shirt, the soft fabric a small comfort. The bed was turned down. A single lamp cast a pool of warm light, leaving the corners in deep shadow. The television was on, some documentary about oceans playing at low volume, its serene images a stark contrast to the turmoil inside her.
She was just about to reach for the remote when it started again.
A low, rhythmic thud against the shared wall. A giggle, unmistakably Si’s, bright and unfettered. Then Jules’s voice, a murmur too low to decipher, but the intent was clear. It was a predator’s purr.
Makayla froze, the remote slipping from her fingers to land soundlessly on the duvet. Her heart instantly hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum call to match the one beginning next door. This time, there was no initial shock, no outrage. There was only a deep, pooling recognition in her gut. The heat from the previous night reignited, a live wire dropped into water.
The sounds grew clearer, more distinct. The thumping was slower tonight, more deliberate. A deep moan from Si. “Yeah… just like that…”
Makayla’s breath hitched. She was standing beside the bed, her body held taut. The documentary’s narrator droned on about coral spawning. Her eyes fixed on the wall, on the single, faint hairline crack in the paint that ran from ceiling to floor. It became a focal point. Through that crack, she imagined, the energy poured.
She didn’t decide to move. Her body moved for her. She sank onto the edge of the mattress, her back straight. Her hands lay flat on her thighs, then slowly curled into fists. The sounds were a soundtrack, and she was its captive audience.
“Turn over,” Jules commanded, his voice husky. “I want you from behind.”
There was a rustle of sheets, a soft, eager sound from Si. Then the thudding resumed, a different, deeper timbre. The headboard protested, a steady, driven thump-thump-thump against the wall.
Makayla’s eyes drifted closed. In the darkness behind her lids, the visuals played unbidden. She saw the woman, Si, on her hands and knees. She saw the man, Jules, behind her, his hands gripping her hips, his long hair falling over his face as he drove into her. She could almost feel the impact, the brutal, beautiful physics of it.
A gasp escaped her own lips, swallowed by the room’s quiet. One of her hands unclenched and drifted upward, almost of its own volition. Her fingertips brushed over the cotton of her sleep shirt, over her nipple. It was instantly, painfully hard. She pinched it through the fabric, a sharp, delicious pain that arrowed straight down to her core. Her other hand slid beneath the hem of her shirt, across the flat plane of her stomach, down into the waistband of her panties.
She was already wet. The discovery was a shock, a guilty thrill.
Her fingers slipped through the slickness, finding her clit, swollen and needy. She gasped again, her head falling back. She let the sound out, a soft, shaky exhale. There was no one to hear. The couple next door was too lost in their own noise to care.
“Fuck, you’re so tight,” Jules grunted, his rhythm becoming uneven, faster. “You gonna come for me?”
“Yes… yes, god, don’t stop!” Si’s voice was a broken plea, a chant.
Makayla’s own fingers worked in frantic circles, mirroring the pace she imagined from next door. The pleasure was a wire pulled taut, humming inside her. She was a shadow puppet, mimicking the real act just feet away. Her hips began to rock against her own hand, seeking pressure, friction. She bit down on her lower lip, the same spot she’d bitten raw last night, to keep the moans locked inside.
The sounds from the other room were reaching a peak. Slapping skin, ragged breathing, the crude, beautiful poetry of their coupling.
“Come on, baby. Squirt for me. Soak the sheets,” Jules rasped, his voice choked with effort.
Si’s response was a wordless, escalating scream, a sound of pure, unraveling ecstasy.
It was the permission Makayla needed. The coil inside her snapped. Her back arched off the bed, her heels digging into the mattress. A sharp, silent cry tore from her throat as the orgasm ripped through her, a seismic wave of release that turned her bones to liquid. Her fingers kept moving, milking the sensation, prolonging the dizzying fall until she collapsed, spent and trembling, onto the rumpled sheets.
Next door, the final, shouted release from Jules echoed through the wall, followed by the heavy, collapsing silence of two bodies falling into a heap.
The ocean documentary was now showing a school of fish moving in silent, unison. Makayla lay there, her chest heaving, the cool air from the window chilling the sweat on her skin. The guilt came then, swift and cold. She yanked her hand from her panties as if burned. She was a forty-year-old married woman, a vice president, a homeowner, lying in a hotel room masturbating to the sounds of strangers having sex. Dave’s face floated in her mind, kind and trusting. A sob caught in her throat, part shame, part a confused, aching loss for something she didn't even know she was missing.
She dragged herself into the bathroom and stood under a scalding shower, scrubbing her skin until it was pink. She didn’t look at herself in the mirror.
Sleep was a fractured thing. She dreamed of walls dissolving.
The next morning heading to the elevator she was shocked as she entered.
That’s when she saw them.
Smiling and giggling as they walked into the elevator. He had long, dirty-blond hair tied in a messy knot, wearing a worn leather jacket over a black t-shirt. Jules. She was vibrant, with a tumble of dark curls and a sleeve of tattoos curling down her arm. She shoved his shoulder playfully, her eyes bright.
They were just… people. Young, beautiful, electric people, but people nonetheless. Not the mythical, carnal gods of her midnight fantasy. They looked like any other couple, just with more edge.
Makayla’s face grew hot. She felt like a thief. She knew the sounds of their most intimate moments, the shape of their pleasure, but she didn’t know their favorite movies or where they grew up.
As if sensing the weight of a stare, Jules turned his head. His eyes looked over and landed on her. There was no recognition, just a casual, fleeting glance. He gave a faint, polite nod, the kind you give a stranger in a shared space, and turned back to Si.
The simple normality of it was a shock. He hadn’t seen the woman pressed against the wall, listening, touching herself. He just saw a tired-looking businesswoman in a blazer.
Si followed his glance. She smiled, a quick, friendly flash of white teeth, before leaning in to whisper something to Jules that made him laugh again.
Makayla looked down at her phone, her vision blurring. The professional shell she wore every day felt like it was cracking, and underneath was something raw, hungry, and terribly, terribly awake. The sounds were innocent now, daylight sounds. But in her mind, they would always be tangled with the dark, with the thudding rhythm, with the filthy, glorious words that had pulled a climax from her in the silent dark.
