Chapter 21: The Collar's Weight
The week that followed was a study in quiet agony. The key sat on Aidan’s nightstand, a tiny, shining monument to a question she had already answered. Catriona moved through her days at the library in a suspended state, the feel of rough hemp against her wrists replaced by the starched cuff of her blouse, the whisper of the flogger’s falls echoing behind the rustle of turning pages. Every mundane interaction was layered over with a secret knowledge.
She’d catch Aidan’s eye over the breakfast table, him bleary-eyed with coffee, her meticulously spreading jam on toast.
“Big day?” he’d ask, the question perfectly normal.
“Quiet, I think. The new Murakami displays are going up,” she’d reply, the words banal. But the look they held was anything but. It was a promise, a confirmation. The weekend was coming.
Saturday arrived under a sheet of grey rain. The tension in the flat was a live wire. They tiptoed around it, cleaning, pretending to watch a film, the air thick with unsaid instructions. Finally, as dusk bled into the windows, Aidan stood from the sofa and stretched, his t-shirt riding up.
“Right then,” he said, his voice casual, as if suggesting a cup of tea. “Think it’s time you had a look at that new… bit of kit I got. The one with the tails.”
Her mouth went dry. The flogger. She simply nodded, placing her mug down with deliberate care.
His room was as they’d left it, the key still on the nightstand. But on the desk now lay a long, narrow box of dark wood. He didn’t touch it immediately. Instead, he turned to her, leaning against the desk, his arms crossed.
“Rules haven’t changed. Safeword’s your lifeline. Use it. This isn’t about breaking you. It’s about…” He searched for the word, his engineer’s mind wanting precision. “Stress-testing. Understanding the limits of the material.” A faint smile. “You’re the material.”
“I understand,” she said, her voice firmer than she felt.
“Good. Now. You said you’d beg for it.” He uncrossed his arms. “So beg.”
It wasn’t a roar. It was a calm, flat command. It sliced through the last of her intellectual barriers. This was the precipice. She could step back, cite anxiety, the weather, anything. She wet her lips.
The first attempt was a whisper. “Please.”
He shook his head slowly. “Not that. That’s what you say when you pass the salt. I want the dirty version. The one from the library basement. The one you’re ashamed of. Give me that.”
A tremor started deep in her core. She felt her face flush, a hot wave of shame that immediately twisted into fuel. She looked at the floor, at the frayed edge of the rug. When she spoke, the words were scraped from a hidden place, low and ragged.
“Please… use it on me. I want to feel it. I want it to hurt. I want to cry from it.” She forced her eyes up to his. “I need you to mark me. Sir.”
The honorific hung in the air, new and potent. He didn’t react to it, just gave a single, slow nod.
“Clothes. Off. Fold them. You know where.”
The routine was its own kind of worship. The careful unbuttoning, the folding of her skirt over the chair, the removal of her sensible underwear. Each garment shed was a layer of Catriona the librarian placed neatly aside. What stood in the center of the room, hands at her sides, was something else entirely. Exposed. Waiting.
He opened the box. Inside, nestled in black silk, was the flogger. The handles were wrapped in dark leather, the falls—maybe twenty of them—were long, slim, and supple. They looked innocent. He lifted it out, gave it an experimental swing. The sound was a soft, menacing whisper.
“Over the foot of the bed. Hands on the quilt. Feet apart. Arch your back. Present.”
She moved into position, the worn cotton of the quilt under her palms, her body bent at the waist. The position was profoundly vulnerable, her entire back and the curves of her arse exposed. She heard him move behind her, the gentle slap of the falls against his palm.
“We start slow. Breathe. Remember to breathe.”
The first impact was a surprise. Not pain, but a spread of pressure, a muffled thud that reverberated through her pelvis. Then another. And another. A slow, rhythmic rain. It was warm, almost soothing. Her muscles, clenched in anticipation, began to relax.
The tempo increased. The thuds grew sharper, landing with more intent. A heat began to build, spreading across her skin like a blush. She focused on her breathing, in through the nose, out through the mouth, as the sensation deepened from warmth into a bright, singing sting.
“Colour?” His voice was a steady anchor in the growing storm.
“Green,” she gasped into the quilt.
The character of the blows changed. He aimed lower, where the flesh was softer. The sting became a bite, each impact leaving a precise, fiery brand. Her breaths grew ragged. A sound escaped her—a sharp, punched-out gasp.
“Good,” he murmured, not stopping. “That’s the feeling. Stay with it.”
He worked methodically, covering every inch of her offered skin. The pain was no longer a series of separate strikes but a rising tide, a crescendo of heat and shock. It built and built, coiling tight in her stomach. Tears welled, born purely of physiological overload. They dripped onto the quilt below her face.
“Please,” she sobbed, the word torn from her.
“Please what?”
“More. Harder.”
He obliged. The flogger fell with a crisper sound, a crack that echoed in the small room. The pain split, sharp and brilliant. She cried out openly, her fingers clawing at the bedding. The line between pleasure and agony dissolved. She was a nerve ending, a canvas of fire. She was weeping, great heaving sobs that shook her frame, but she pushed her arse higher into the storm, a raw, wordless plea for continuation.
He stopped.
The sudden absence of the barrage was a shock. The air felt cold on her searing skin. She heard him drop the flogger on the desk. His hands, warm and solid, settled on her trembling waist.
“Look at you,” he said, his voice thick with something like awe. He traced a line down her spine, making her flinch. “Perfect. Red as hellfire. Raised already. It’ll be purple tomorrow.” He bent, his lips close to her ear. “You begged so beautifully. And you took every bit of it.”
He helped her stand. Her legs were liquid. He guided her to the cracked mirror on the wall, turning her to see her reflection.
The woman in the glass was a stranger. Face streaked with tears and salt, hair plastered to her temples, eyes wide and dark. And her back… it was a landscape of violent, glorious colour. A patchwork of crimson streaks and rising welts, a brutal masterpiece.
“See?” he said softly, standing behind her, his hands on her shoulders. “Proof of work.”
He led her to the bed, had her lie on her stomach. He fetched a damp, cool cloth and began to gently wipe her face, then dabbed at her heated skin. The tenderness was almost worse than the flogger. It undid her completely.
After a long silence, as the throbbing in her skin settled into a deep, satisfying ache, he reached over to the nightstand. He picked up the key, then took her hand and pressed it into her palm once more, closing her fingers around it.
“You earned this tonight,” he said. His tone was light, but his eyes were serious. “Not just for taking it. For asking for it. For being honest in the dirt.” He nodded toward the desk drawer. “The collar came yesterday. It’s in there. Your choice. Now or never.”
She looked at the key in her hand, then at the humble drawer. It was no longer a question of fear, but of commitment. The flogger had scoured her clean of doubt. She wanted the label. She needed the reminder.
“Now,” she whispered.
He got up, opened the drawer, and pulled out a narrow box. From it, he lifted the collar. It was exactly as he’d described: rich, dark leather, a sturdy steel O-ring at the front. It looked simple, elegant, and profoundly serious.
He came to stand before her. “Last chance to back out.”
She lifted her chin, exposing her throat. The ultimate vulnerability. “Do it.”
The leather was cool and firm as he buckled it at the nape of her neck. It fitted snugly, not choking, but inescapably present. He took the key from her. The click of the tiny lock engaging was the loudest sound she’d ever heard. It resonated in her bones.
A finality. A beginning.
He attached a slim, fine chain to the O-ring and let it pool in her lap. “For me to lead you by, when I want to,” he explained, matter-of-fact. Then he sat beside her, running a finger under the leather edge. “How does it feel?”
Catriona took a deep, shuddering breath. The weight was perfect. The pressure was a constant, calming truth.
“It feels,” she said, the tears coming again, soft and quiet this time, “like coming home.”
