Chapter 1: Opening Image

The alarm blared like a siren through the thick silence of his room, jolting Shiven awake before he even had a chance to fully drift back into the dream. He groaned, rolling onto his side and pressing his face into the pillow, the synthetic fibers rough against his skin. The dream had been vivid—warm sunlight, a quiet beach, the rhythmic crash of waves—but it was gone now, dissolved into the harsh reality of another day.

He pulled himself up, stretching his arms above his head with a slow, deliberate motion. The room was small, cramped between the walls of his shared apartment in the city, but it was his own space. His own sanctuary, at least for now.

The morning light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, casting long, golden streaks across the bed and the scattered clothes that told the story of his life—one of restless nights and fleeting days. He ran a hand through his dark, slightly tousled hair, feeling the faintest prickle of stubble against his palm. The mirror on the wall above his dresser was his first audience each morning, and today, as always, it didn’t disappoint.

Shiven studied himself—sharp jawline, high cheekbones, the kind of face that turned heads without trying. He’d been told he looked like a movie star, though he’d never quite understood what that meant.

To him, he was just Shiven—twenty-three, with a string of odd jobs behind him and an uncertain future stretching out ahead. He traced the line of his nose, the curve of his lips, and felt a familiar pang of unease. What good was a pretty face when it couldn’t tell you what you wanted to do with your life?

His reflection seemed to stare back at him, questioning. He sighed, pushing off the bed and padding across the cold wooden floor to the tiny bathroom. The shower was a cramped affair, the water pressure barely enough to rinse the shampoo from his hair, but it was warm, and that was enough.

Shiven stood under the weak stream, letting the water run over his body, washing away the remnants of sleep and the lingering unease from his reflection. He closed his eyes, tilting his head back, and for a moment, he was back on that beach, the sun warm on his skin, the sound of the waves a soothing lullaby.

But the water grew cool, and the illusion shattered. He stepped out, wrapping a towel around his waist, and made his way back to his room. The apartment was quiet, his roommate still lost in the depths of sleep.

Shiven pulled on a pair of faded jeans and a simple white tee, the fabric soft against his skin. He hesitated for a moment, staring at his reflection one last time in the mirror, then turned away, as if he couldn’t bear to look at himself any longer.
