Chapter 8: The Arrival
The house was too quiet. Christine had noticed it the moment Zack left for his short errand, the silence pressing in around her like a held breath. She had dressed slowly, deliberately, choosing the deep emerald silk dress that fell just above her knees, the neckline dipping low enough to show the swell of her breasts. No underwear. That had been Zack's instruction, delivered with a kiss to her forehead that morning, and she had obeyed without a word of protest.
Now she stood at the window in the living room, watching the street. Four o'clock was twenty minutes away. Her hands were steady but her pulse was not, a constant flutter at her throat, between her thighs, in the deep places where the glass plug still rested from the night before. Zack had left it in her when she woke. He had checked it before he went out, sliding a finger inside her to confirm it was seated, and she had gasped at the casual intrusion.
"Good girl," he had said, and kissed her cheek, and left her trembling by the window.
The afternoon light poured through the glass, warm and honeyed, catching the dust motes in the air. Christine smoothed her palms down the front of her dress, feeling the silk whisper over her skin. She thought about Joaquin's hands. She had only seen them casually before, across dinner tables, passing a dish, gesturing as he told a story. But now she imagined them differently. On her hips. On her breasts. Sliding up the inside of her thigh.
Her cunt ached. The plug shifted inside her as she shifted her weight, and she bit her lip at the sensation, the slickness between her legs already threatening to ruin the silk.
The doorbell rang.
Christine's heart slammed against her ribs. She took a breath, then another, and walked to the door with a composure she did not feel. She opened it.
Joaquin stood on the threshold, and for a moment neither of them moved.
He was wearing a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, the bronze skin of his forearms warm in the evening light. Dark denim jeans hugged his thighs. A bottle of red wine hung from his fingers, and his dark eyes, steady and warm, traveled over her slowly, from her silver-streaked hair to the bare curve of her calf, and back to her face.
"Christine." His voice was low, a little rough at the edges. "You look beautiful."
The words settled somewhere deep in her belly. "Thank you." She stepped aside, gesturing him in, and he moved past her close enough that she caught the clean scent of soap and something darker beneath it, something warm and male.
He stopped in the entryway and turned back to her. When he leaned in to kiss her cheek, his lips lingered just long enough for her to feel the heat of his mouth, the brush of his breath, the faint scrape of stubble against her skin. She shivered. Her hands, hanging at her sides, curled into loose fists.
"I brought wine," he said, straightening, and there was the slightest curl at the corner of his mouth. He knew what he was doing. The look in his eyes was not innocent.
Behind her, Zack appeared at the end of the hall, buttoning his cuffs. He crossed to them with that easy, unhurried stride she had always loved, his grey eyes moving from Joaquin to Christine and back.
"Joaquin." Zack clasped his shoulder, a warm, masculine greeting. "Glad you could make it."
"Thank you for having me." Joaquin's gaze flickered to Christine again, held it a beat longer than necessary. "I've been looking forward to this."
The words hung in the air, weighted with meaning. Christine felt her nipples tighten against the silk, the fabric grazing them with every small movement. The plug pressed up inside her, a constant reminder of what was coming.
Zack took the wine from Joaquin's hand and gestured toward the living room. "Let's open this. Christine, would you grab the glasses?"
She moved on autopilot, grateful for the task, the distraction. In the kitchen she leaned against the counter for a moment, eyes closed, breath shallow. What are we doing. The thought came and went, replaced by the deeper, more urgent pulse between her thighs. What I want. What I've begged for all week.
She returned with three glasses, stemware clinking softly, to find the two men settled on the velvet sofa, Joaquin at one end, Zack at the other. There was space between them. Space for her. She felt the weight of it like a physical thing.
"Come here, love." Zack's voice was gentle but firm, a command dressed in silk. He patted the cushion between them.
Christine crossed the room, the silk dress whispering around her thighs, and sat. The glass plug shifted, pressing deep, and she bit the inside of her cheek to keep from gasping. Zack poured the wine, the dark liquid catching the light, and handed her a glass.
She took a sip. It was rich and warm, coating her tongue.
Joaquin leaned forward, setting his glass on the low table, and his knee brushed hers. It was incidental, accidental, but she felt the contact like a brand through the silk.
"I want to say something," he said, his voice low, those dark eyes fixed on her. "Before anything happens tonight. I want you to know that I feel very fortunate to be here. To be trusted like this."
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard. She looked down at her wine, then up at him. "Thank you. We... we trust you."
Zack's hand found her thigh, warm and grounding, high enough that his thumb brushed the hem of her dress. "She's been thinking about this all week," he said, and Christine's cheeks flushed hot. "She hasn't stopped talking about you."
Joaquin's smile deepened, a slow, knowing thing. "Is that so?"
Christine's throat was dry. She took another sip of wine, the heat spreading through her chest, her thighs, the place between her legs that was already wet, already aching. "Zack," she murmured, half warning, half plea.
His hand slid higher on her thigh, beneath the hem now, his fingertips brushing the bare skin of her hip. "I think you should tell him what you've been thinking about. In your own words."
The golden light poured through the windows, casting long shadows across the floor. Joaquin watched her, patient and still, his dark eyes unreadable. The plug pressed inside her, and Christine felt her breath catch, her body answering the question before her mouth could.
