Chapter 1: Introduction
The gym was a symphony of clanking weights, grunts, and the rhythmic thuds of sneakers hitting treadmills. The air was thick with the scent of sweat, disinfectant, and the faint undercurrent of some overpowering body spray that only seemed to amplify the odor of the former two. In the midst of this chaos, Alex lounged against the weight bench, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth as he watched Ted struggle with the barbell.
The blonde stubble on his chiseled jawline glistened with sweat, and his muscles, already well-defined, flexed under the strain of holding the heavy weight without even breaking a sweat.
"Come on, Teddy boy," Alex called out, his voice a low drawl that carried over the gym's noise easily. "You're not even moving that thing. It's like trying to lift a feather with a bulldozer."
Ted grunted, his face turning a shade of red that clashed with his pasty skin. He shifted his grip on the bar, the veins in his forearms standing out like ropes as he strained.
His t-shirt, already soaked through, clung to his ample belly and back, leaving little to the imagination. Alex didn't miss the opportunity to smirk.
"You know what they say, Teddy. Abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym. Looks like you've been skipping breakfast."
A few of the nearby gym-goers snickered, and Ted's face darkened further. He was used to the jokes, the snide remarks, the laughter. But it didn't make them any easier to bear. He took a deep breath, trying to ignore the heat in his cheeks, and focused on the task at hand.
The barbell groaned as he managed to lift it a few inches off the ground before it crashed back down, the weight too much for his trembling arms.
"Damn it, Alex," Ted muttered under his breath, wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. "You're supposed to be encouraging, not insulting."
Alex leaned in, his voice a low whisper that only Ted could hear. "Encouraging? I thought I was just providing some honest feedback. Besides, a little tough love never hurt anyone.
It's how I got my dream body." Alex winked, flexing his biceps for emphasis. Ted rolled his eyes, but Alex could see the hint of admiration beneath the irritation.
"Yeah, well, not everyone's born with your...gifts," Ted retorted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Some of us have to work for it."
Alex chuckled, clapping Ted on the back. "And you will, Teddy. You will. Just need to put in the work."
The heavy weights clattered as Ted dropped the barbell back onto the rack, sending a wave of relief through his body.
His muscles ached, and his breath came in ragged gasps, but he couldn't help feeling a sense of accomplishment. It was small, but it was something.
Alex, still smirking, leaned against the wall, arms crossed over his chest, watching Ted with an amused glint in his eye. "See? You're getting there, Teddy. One feather at a time."
Ted shot him a withering look but couldn't muster up much heat. Alex was like a human version of a mosquito—annoying but hard to swat away. He sighed and grabbed his towel, wiping his face and neck vigorously.
As he did, he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror that lined the front of the gym. He looked ridiculous, a sweaty, red-faced doughboy struggling with a weight that was laughably light compared to what the muscled gods around him were tossing about. He turned away quickly, not wanting to see the pity in Alex's eyes, or worse, the laughter.
"You know, if you really want to see some progress, you need to switch up your routine," Alex said, pushing himself off the wall and dropping into a squat to pick up his own towel. He snapped it at Ted's butt playfully, causing Ted to jump and nearly fall over.
"You need someone to push you, Teddy. Someone who knows their stuff."
Ted shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting away from Alex's gaze. "Yeah, well, maybe I don't want to be pushed that hard."
Alex chuckled, standing up and tossing his towel into his gym bag. "Come on, man. You can't let a little banter get to you. It's all in good fun."
Ted hesitated, then shrugged. "I guess. But sometimes it's hard not to take it personally."
Alex's expression softened slightly, and he clapped Ted on the shoulder.
"Look, I get it. I'm a jerk, and I know it. But I'm not trying to be mean, okay? Sometimes people need a kick in the ass to get moving. And besides, isn't it better to have someone push you who cares enough to be honest with you?"
Ted looked at Alex, his expression guarded. "You care?"
Alex smiled, a genuine smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. "Yeah, I do. In my own fucked-up way. You're not just some schlub to me, Teddy. You're...well, you're kind of like the little brother I never had.
Annoying as hell, but kinda endearing too."
Ted snorted. "Gee, thanks. I think."
Alex laughed, a deep, hearty sound that seemed to fill the space between them. "You're welcome. Now come on, let's go grab some protein shakes before I have to deal with the after-work crowd. The last thing I need is to listen to some meathead brag about his latest squat PR."
They made their way over to the smoothie bar, Alex striding confidently while Ted waddled slightly, his thighs chafing from the exertion.
The bar was a sleek counter lit with LED lights, displaying an array of colorful drinks that promised various health benefits and muscle-building properties.
Alex ordered his usual whey protein blend, while Ted opted for a blueberry acai smoothie, hoping to convince himself that the antioxidants would do something for his sagging skin.
As they waited, a group of women walked in, their laughter filling the room like a sweet melody. Ted watched as they approached the counter, their lean bodies clad in form-fitting workout gear.
They were all smiles and confidence, a stark contrast to the self-consciousness that always seemed to cling to Ted like a second skin. One of the women, a brunette with a ponytail and a smile that could light up a room, caught Alex's eye.
"Hey, Alex," she said, her voice as bright as her smile. "Haven't seen you in a while. Still training those muscle-bound meatheads?"
Alex grinned, his eyes never leaving hers. "Only the best, Sarah. You should know that. How's your marathon training going?"
Sarah flexed her arm, showing off a well-defined bicep.
"Pretty good, actually. I've been working on my speed and endurance. I might even beat my personal best this year."
Alex nodded approvingly. "That's what I like to hear. You know, if you ever need a spotter or someone to push you, just say the word."
Sarah winked at him. "I'll keep that in mind. Maybe we can even train together sometime."
Ted felt a pang of jealousy, watching the easy banter between them. It was clear that Alex and Sarah had a history, and it wasn't just about working out.
Ted felt a familiar sense of inadequacy wash over him. He was no match for Alex, with his chiseled abs and confident smirk, and he certainly couldn't compete with a woman like Sarah.
Alex turned his attention back to Ted, who was busying himself with unwrapping a protein bar. "Hey, Teddy, you mind if I catch up with Sarah for a bit? I'll meet you back at the locker room in a few."
"Oh, uh, sure," Ted stammered, trying to hide the fact that he was eavesdropping.
"No problem. Take your time."
Alex flashed him a smile before turning back to Sarah. "Great. Then it's a date. Let's catch up over a smoothie."
Ted watched as they moved to a quieter corner of the bar, their heads bent together as they chatted. He felt a strange mix of envy and curiosity. Alex was always surrounded by beautiful, confident people. How did he do it?
Ted took a bite of his protein bar, chewing slowly to give himself something to do. He had seen Sarah around the gym before. She was always friendly, always smiling. She was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome and at ease.
Ted couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be that confident, that comfortable in your own skin. It seemed like a foreign world to him, one he could only observe from afar.
Ted finished his smoothie and tossed the cup into the recycling bin. He watched Alex and Sarah laughing and chatting, their faces animated, while he slunk off towards the locker room. As he walked, he could feel the familiar weight of self-doubt settling over him like a heavy cloak.
The locker room was a stark contrast to the bustling gym floor. The air was thick with the scent of sweat and the low rumble of showers.
Lockers clanged shut, and the floor was damp under Ted's sneakers as he made his way to his locker. He fumbled with the combination, his hands shaking slightly from the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.
As he opened the locker, he caught a glimpse of his reflection in the metal door. His skin was slick with sweat, his t-shirt clinging to his body in all the wrong places. He quickly changed into his street clothes, trying to ignore the mirror's unflattering reflection.
He was midway through pulling on his jeans when he heard someone clear their throat behind him.
He turned to see Alex leaning against the locker next to his, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. Ted's heart sank. He'd hoped to escape without another ribbing from the muscle-bound trainer.
"Still here, I see," Alex said, his voice laced with amusement. "I thought you'd have bolted by now."
Ted shrugged, trying to act nonchalant. "Just finishing up. What about you? Don't tell me you're finally ready to call it a day?"
Alex chuckled, pushing himself off the locker. "Nah, I still have a few more reps to do.
Although, I might take a break to hit the showers," Alex replied, his eyes flicking to the communal shower area for a moment before returning to Ted. "You should join me, Teddy. The hot water helps loosen up those sore muscles."
Ted felt his face flush, the heat spreading down his neck. He quickly averted his eyes, focusing on tying his shoelaces. "Uh, thanks for the offer, Alex, but I think I'll pass. I've got some...stuff to do at home."
Alex raised an eyebrow, his smirk never fading. "Come on, Teddy.
Don't be a prude," Alex teased, clapping him on the back. "It's not like we haven't seen each other in our skivvies before. Besides, I could use some company. Who knows, maybe I'll even give you some pointers on your form."
Ted stared at him, taken aback. "Pointers? Alex, I'm pretty sure the only thing you'd be pointing at in there is...well, you know."
Alex barked out a laugh, a deep, genuine sound that filled the locker room. "Damn, Teddy, you've got a wit on you. I like it.
You'd be surprised how much I can teach you, given the chance," Alex said, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
Ted hesitated, then let out a reluctant chuckle. "I don't doubt that, but I really do need to get going. Rain check?"
Alex shrugged, not seeming too bothered by the rejection. "Alright, man. Suit yourself. But don't say I didn't offer."
He turned to walk away, then paused and looked back over his shoulder at Ted. "You know, if you're ever looking for some one-on-one training, I could probably fit you in.
My calendar's pretty open right now," Alex added casually, as if he hadn't just been shot down a moment ago.
Ted blinked in surprise. He had expected Alex to be annoyed or dismissive, not to offer him personal training sessions. "Really? You'd do that?"
Alex shrugged. "Why not? You're paying members, after all. And I do have a reputation to uphold as the gym's best trainer."
Ted hesitated, his mind racing. He had always been curious about what it would be like to have Alex as a personal trainer.
The way he pushed people, the confidence he exuded, the results he seemed to get—Ted couldn't help but be intrigued. Plus, there was a small part of him that wanted to prove Alex wrong, to show him that he could improve, that he wasn't just some joke to be laughed at.
"I don't know, Alex. I mean, I've seen how you treat people here..." Ted trailed off, gesturing to the gym floor. "I'm not sure I could handle that kind of...intensity."
Alex smirked, a gleam in his eye. "Oh, come on, Teddy. You can handle it.
In fact, I think you need it. And besides, you'll have my undivided attention. No more jokes or snide remarks. Just hard work and real results."
Ted felt a spark of determination ignite within him. He had always wanted to see what Alex was truly capable of, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Plus, the thought of finally being able to hold his own in the gym was an enticing one.
"Alright, Alex. You're on. When do we start?" Ted asked, trying to keep his voice steady despite the butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
Alex grinned, his teeth flashing white against his tanned skin.
"That's the spirit, Teddy. How about tomorrow afternoon? We can meet at your place. I'll bring some equipment, and we'll see what we can do with that mountain you call an ass."
Ted flinched, the old insecurities rising to the surface once more. But he pushed them down, reminding himself that this was his chance to change things. "Sure, that works for me. What time?"
"How about 3 PM? That should give us a few hours before it gets too late. And don't worry, I'll make sure to bring some of your favorite workout tunes.
You know, to drown out the sound of your grunting and panting." Alex winked, playfully shoving Ted's shoulder before strutting off towards the showers.
Ted stared after him, a mix of excitement and nervousness churning in his stomach. He had never invited someone like Alex into his personal space before, let alone agreed to be tortured by him. But there was something about Alex's cocky confidence that made Ted want to push himself, to prove that he was more than just the overweight, insecure guy at the gym.
