Chapter 2: The Questioning of Flesh

The thumps outside ceased.

The silence that followed was worse. It was a held breath, a vacuum waiting to be filled. Lyra could hear the frantic drum of her own heart, the soft, almost inaudible hum coming from Xylos as he stood poised by the door. The violet light through the window pulsed once, twice, then steadied to a dull, constant throb.

He turned from the door.

The alert tension melted from his frame, replaced by a languid, dismissive curiosity. Whatever had been out there no longer concerned him. His dark eyes found her on the couch, and the focus returned, sharp and personal. He strode back across the room, each footfall a soft, deliberate press on the wooden boards. He had grown again in the last few minutes. He had to duck his head slightly to avoid the low crossbeam near the fireplace. His shoulders seemed to fill the space between the armchair and the bookshelf.

He stopped before her, looking down. Lyra clutched the torn fabric of her sweater to her chest, her jeans a tangled constraint around her ankles. She felt like a specimen pinned to a board.

“It is gone,” he stated, as if commenting on the weather. “A lesser thing. Drawn to the energy. It does not matter.”

His hand rose, not to touch her, but to touch himself. He ran his palm over the sharp plane of his own cheek, down the column of his neck. His skin, once opalescent, now had a sheen like oil on water, stretched taut over the new architecture of his jaw. Coarse, silver-black hair, thicker now, covered his forearms, dusted his knuckles.

“Feel this,” he commanded. It wasn’t a question. He grasped her wrist, his grip a firm inevitability, and pulled her hand from where it shielded her. He placed her palm flat against his bicep. The muscle beneath was like carved granite, but it was moving. It quivered, a slow, rhythmic expansion like a heartbeat. She could feel individual fibers knitting, thickening, the circumference of his arm increasing under her touch.

“It is… continuous,” he murmured, watching her face. His voice was deeper now, the strange melody buried under a resonance that vibrated in her teeth. “A becoming. Do you feel the pleasure in it? The cells singing.”

She tried to pull her hand away. His fingers tightened, a gentle, unbreakable cage. “I need to… I need to get up.”

“Later.” He guided her hand down his arm, over the swell of his pectoral muscle. The hair here was a dark, swirling pattern. “And this.” He moved her hand lower, across the ridged plane of his stomach. His skin was furnace-hot. Each defined abdominal muscle was a separate, heated tile. He didn’t stop at his waist.

He pressed her hand against his erection.

It was, if possible, larger. The heat of it was shocking, a dense, living brand. And it, too, was actively growing. She felt a distinct, powerful pulse, a surge of internal pressure, and the length in her hand thickened perceptibly. The helical ridge near the base seemed more pronounced, a biomechanical detail. A drop of clear fluid beaded at the tip, glistening in the murky light.

Lyra gasped, a shudder running through her. It was revulsion. It was also a jagged spike of remembered sensation, the ghost of that overwhelming fullness echoing in her own hips. Her body, traitorously, clenched with empty ache.

Xylos’s eyes flashed with understanding. He laughed, a low, rolling sound of pure, unadulterated joy. It wasn’t cruel laughter. It was the laughter of a child who has discovered a wonderful new toy. Himself.

“You see?” he said, his thumb stroking the back of her captive hand. “It is all connected. Your reaction. My growth. A circuit.” He finally released her, and she snatched her hand back as if burned, cradling it against her chest. He didn’t seem to mind. He looked down at his own body, his expression one of rapt wonder.

He touched his own nipple, a dark, pebbled nub amidst the swirl of chest hair. “This,” he said. “What is its purpose? It is sensitive.” He pinched it, experimentally, and a sharp breath hissed through his teeth. His cock twitched against his thigh. “Ah. It is linked.”

“They’re… erogenous zones,” Lyra whispered, the clinical term ash in her mouth. She had to play along. Had to keep him talking, distracted. Her eyes darted to the overturned table, to the iron poker lying near the fireplace. Five steps. Maybe six.

“E-ro-gen-ous,” he sounded out, savoring the word. “Good. And these?” His hands cupped his testicles, which were heavy and full, nestled in a thatch of coarse hair. He weighed them thoughtfully. “They are factories. For seed. I know this. The knowledge is in the form. But the feeling…” He squeezed gently, and his eyes drifted shut for a second. “The feeling is new. A deep, good ache. Tell me about the ache.”

Lyra swallowed. She slowly, carefully, began to wiggle her legs free of her jeans. Any movement felt enormous. “It’s… it’s normal. A sign of… readiness.”

“Readiness,” he repeated, opening his eyes. They pinned her. “Yes. I am ready. The form is impatient. It has needs beyond fuel.” He stepped closer, the heat of him enveloping her again. The musky, ozone scent was stronger now, primal. He placed a hand on the couch beside her head, leaning in. “You will explain the rest. The mechanics. The… techniques.”

“Techniques?” Her voice cracked.

“For mating. For optimal conjunction.” His face was inches away. His dark eyes held galaxies of intent. “The form has instincts. A thrust. A rhythm. But you are human. You have… culture. Refinement.” A slow, cunning smile spread across his face. “You will teach me refinement before I am too large to learn it.”

The horror of his statement dawned on her. He wasn’t just using her. He was studying her. She was a primer for a predator who intended to move on to others, armed with practiced skill. The thought was a cold knife in her gut.

“I’m not… I can’t…” she stammered.

“You can.” He said it with absolute certainty. His free hand came up and trailed a single finger from her temple, down her cheek, to her lips. He pressed lightly, and she flinched. “Your body is already teaching me. The way you tightened. The sounds you made. The taste of your fuel.” His gaze dropped to her mouth. “There are other forms of conjunction, yes? The form suggests… many.”

He leaned in, as if to kiss her. Lyra turned her head sharply, his finger brushing across her cheekbone instead.

He paused, then chuckled, straightening up. “Resistance. Another data point.” He seemed amused, not offended. He pushed off the couch and took a pace back, giving her a once-over. “You are still partly confined. This is inefficient.”

Before she could react, he bent, hooked his fingers into the waistband of her jeans tangled around her ankles, and with a crisp tear, ripped them away entirely. The sound of denim giving way was brutally final. He tossed the shredded fabric aside like a husk. She was naked now, exposed under his clinical, appreciative gaze.

“Better,” he said. “Now, the lesson. Stand.”

Trembling, she obeyed. Standing made her feel even more vulnerable. The wooden floor was cold under her feet. The violet glow painted her skin in sickly streaks.

“Observe,” he said, and he began to move. It wasn’t a dance. It was a demonstration. He flexed, posed, turned. He ran his hands over the sweeping line of his latissimus muscles, over the deep cut of his obliques. “The form is designed for leverage. For power.” He dropped into a crouch, the muscles in his thighs and calves bunching like cables. “It is also designed for display. To attract. Does it attract you, Lyra?”

She couldn’t answer. Her throat was sealed shut.

“Your physiological responses indicate yes,” he said, answering for her. He rose and stepped close again. This time, he didn’t touch her. He just let her feel the radiant thermal bloom of him, let her see the sheer, terrifying scale of him up close. The top of her head barely reached his sternum now. “Tell me what a human female finds appealing. In movement. In touch.”

“It’s not… it’s not a manual,” she choked out.

“Everything is a manual,” he replied, his voice quiet, reasonable. “Your films. Your stories. Your covert glances in public spaces. I absorbed fragments. Contradictions. You say you value consent. Gentle touch. Yet you are drawn to strength. To dominance. Your own body, when flooded with my energy, celebrated a taking.” He reached out and very lightly, wrapped a hand around her throat. Not squeezing. Just holding. His thumb rested on her hammering pulse. “Explain the contradiction.”

Tears of frustration and fear welled in her eyes. “It’s not a contradiction. It’s complexity. It’s context. You can’t just… download being a person!”

“I am not a person,” he said simply. “I am Xylos. And I am becoming more. Context is environmental variable. I will adapt.” He released her throat, his hand sliding down, over her collarbone, to cradle her breast. His touch was, absurdly, delicate. “Now. Refinement. The fuel exchange was efficient but… blunt. I have new capacities. Show me how a human female prefers to be touched. Here.”

His other hand moved between her legs. She jerked, but he held her in place, a pillar of immovable heat. His fingers were deft, curious, tracing folds, applying subtle, probing pressure. It was a horrifying parody of intimacy, a scientist mapping terrain.

“Stop,” she pleaded, but it was the same weak word from before.

“I am learning the topography,” he murmured, his attention fully on wh
