Chapter 1: The First Taste
The bass hit like a physical force, thumping through the sticky concrete floor and up into Brad’s spine. The basement air was thick, a stew of cheap beer, spilled cocktails, and the sharp tang of sweat. Strobe lights sliced through the haze, freezing gyrating bodies in jagged snapshots – a flash of bared teeth, a glint of cheap jewelry, the pale curve of a shoulder. It was chaos, the kind Brad usually thrived in. Tonight, though, something felt… off. Charged. Like the air before a lightning strike.
He leaned against the clammy brick wall, a lukewarm beer sweating in his hand, scanning the crowd. He’d lost his frat brothers hours ago, swallowed by the writhing mass. Typical. His gaze swept past the usual hopefuls, the girls batting their lashes, the guys puffing their chests. Then he saw her.
Luna.
She was near the makeshift bar – a plank balanced on two kegs – talking to another sorority sister, one of those Kappa Rho Gamma girls. They all had that unnerving look. Too perfect. Luna though… Luna was different. Raven hair, almost blue-black under the erratic lights, fell in a heavy curtain past her shoulders. Her skin was shockingly pale, almost luminous against the grimy backdrop. She turned her head slightly, catching his stare. Her eyes – Christ, what color were they? One moment a deep, fathomless brown, the next catching the green laser beam and flashing emerald.
She smiled. Not the wide, eager grin he was used to. This was slow, deliberate, a curve of lips that promised secrets. She whispered something to her sister, who smirked and melted back into the crowd. Then Luna was walking towards him. The sea of bodies seemed to part for her. She moved with a liquid grace that made everyone else look clumsy, overdressed in her simple black slip dress that clung to curves Brad’s hands itched to trace.
"Wallflower?" Her voice was low, smoky, cutting through the din without effort. She stopped inches from him. He caught a scent layered over the party smells – something cold, like frost on stone, mixed with a faint, wild floral note. Intoxicating.
"Just taking it all in," Brad grinned, trying for his usual easy charm. It felt suddenly thin, a cheap mask. "Brad." He offered his hand.
"Luna." Her fingers were cool, her grip surprisingly firm. Her gaze held his, unblinking. Those shifting eyes seemed to look through him, weighing his pulse, his breath, the nervous sweat prickling his neck. "You looked lonely over here." She took a step closer. The noise of the party receded, narrowing down to the space between them. The thumping bass became a frantic drumbeat in his temples.
"Nah. Just… waiting for something interesting to happen." His voice sounded rough. He cleared his throat.
"Did it just arrive?" She tilted her head, a strand of that dark hair brushing her collarbone. Her smile widened, showing sharp little teeth. The innocence of the gesture warred with something primal stirring in her expression. Hunger?
Before he could formulate a slick reply, her hand was on his chest. Not pushing, just resting. The coolness of her palm burned through his thin shirt. She stepped into him, her body flush against his. The sudden proximity, the heat radiating from her despite her cool skin, knocked the air from his lungs. He felt pinned, not just by her body, but by the sheer intensity of her focus. She wasn’t looking at the crowd anymore. Just him.
The rough brick pressed into his back through his shirt. The wall was damp, sticky with god-knew-what. He didn’t care. All he registered was the slide of her hand down his torso, the deliberate, slow drag of her fingertips tracing the line of his belt buckle. His breath hitched. Every nerve ending sparked.
She leaned in, her lips brushing the shell of his ear. The sensation shot straight to his groin. He felt himself stir, thicken, straining against his jeans. Her breath was a cold whisper, sending shivers down his spine that had nothing to do with the temperature. "You taste like anticipation," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the music yet cutting through it like glass. "All that heat… coiled tight. So eager." Her fingers played with the metal of his buckle, a soft click echoing louder than the bass in his head. "I could make you forget your own name."
He groaned, a raw sound torn from his throat. His hands found her hips, pulling her harder against him. He could feel the firmness of her thighs, the curve of her ass. It was raw, electric. He’d hooked up countless times in places like this, but this felt different. Predatory. Exhilarating. "Yeah?" he managed, his voice thick. "Show me."
Her low laugh vibrated against his neck. "Patience." Her hand slid lower, cupping him firmly through the denim. He gasped, hips jerking involuntarily. Her touch was cool, confident, utterly claiming. She held him there, the pressure exquisite, unbearable. "We have time. For everything."
He kissed her then, crushing his mouth to hers. It wasn't gentle. It was desperate, fueled by the adrenaline pounding through him and the promise in her touch. Her lips were soft but unyielding. She tasted faintly metallic, like licking a penny. He was lost in it, in the heat, the friction, the absolute rightness of her body against his. He didn't notice the way her eyes, in a fleeting strobe flash, seemed to darken to pure, depthless black for an instant. He didn't see the fleeting flicker of something like conflict – or was it disgust? – twist her features before it vanished, smoothed over by practiced seduction. He only felt the relentless pressure of her hand, the cool silk of her hair tangled in his fingers.
"Let's get out of here," he rasped against her mouth, pulling back just enough to see her face. "My place is close."
Luna’s gaze flickered past his shoulder, towards the stairs leading out of the basement. Her expression shifted, the predatory confidence momentarily clouding. A muscle tensed in her jaw. She looked… hunted. "Yeah," she breathed, but the conviction was gone, replaced by a strange urgency. "Now. We need to go now." Her hand tightened on his arm, nails digging in slightly. Not seductive. Frightened?
Confusion warred with his arousal. "You okay? You seem…" He trailed off, catching the genuine tension in her posture.
"Just… crowded." She forced a smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. They darted towards the dark recesses near the furnace, where two other Kappa Rho Gamma sisters stood watching. Their expressions were unreadable, blank masks. Luna swallowed hard. "Please. Your place. Fast."
The abrupt shift killed the mood, replacing lust with a prickle of unease. But the need was still there, a low thrum beneath the confusion. "Okay," Brad said, taking her hand. Her skin was icy now. "Yeah, let's bail. This way." He pulled her towards the side door, away from the main stairs and the crush of people.
They stumbled out into the cool, damp air of the alley behind the frat house. The sudden quiet was jarring after the sensory overload of the basement. The only sounds were distant traffic and the muffled thump of music from inside. A single, buzzing security light cast harsh, elongated shadows. Brad took a deep breath, the freshness clearing his head a fraction. He turned to Luna, a question forming on his lips.
She was leaning heavily against the graffiti-tagged brick wall, one hand pressed to her stomach. Her face was ashen, her earlier luminosity replaced by a sickly pallor. Her breath came in shallow gasps. The seductive power she wielded moments ago seemed to have evaporated, leaving behind a fragile, trembling figure.
"Whoa, hey," Brad said, stepping closer, the last remnants of lust evaporating into concern. "Luna? What's wrong? Did you drink something bad?"
She shook her head violently, a strangled sound escaping her throat. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with a terror that froze his blood. They weren't shifting colors now. They were huge, black pools swallowing the weak light.
"Brad…" she choked out, her voice a ragged whisper. "Get… get away from me…"
Before he could react, her body convulsed. She doubled over, retching violently. But it wasn't vomit. Thick, viscous liquid, black as crude oil and shimmering with an unnatural iridescence, spewed from her mouth, splattering onto the cracked asphalt with a wet slap. It smoked faintly where it hit the ground, smelling of ozone and something deeply, profoundly rotten. She gagged, gasping for air between heaves, her body wracked with tremors.
Brad stumbled back, horror icing his veins. The beautiful, terrifying woman who’d had him pinned against a wall moments ago was s.
