Chapter 1: The Prisoner's Seduction
The torch sputtered in its bracket, coughing shadows across wet stone. Jasmine pressed her back flat against the cold wall outside Jafar’s cell, the rough-hewn blocks scraping the delicate silk of her tunic. The guards’ rhythmic footsteps faded down the distant corridor. Insanity. That’s what Raja would call this. What her father would call this. What she should call this.
But the heavy iron key felt slick in her palm, stolen from the drowsy jailer’s belt hours ago. She’d told herself it was reconnaissance. Understanding the enemy. A princess’s duty. Lies. Thin ones. The truth hummed low in her belly, a forbidden vibration that drowned out reason. She needed to see him. Not the monstrous parrot, not the shackled prisoner paraded before the court. Him. Jafar. The mind that had almost devoured Agrabah.
Her fingers trembled only slightly as she slid the key into the massive lock. The clunk echoed like a tomb sealing. She pushed the heavy door inward, the groan of ancient hinges swallowed by the thick, damp air inside.
He wasn’t huddled in despair. He was lounging.
Jafar reclined on the narrow stone bench that served as a bed, one long leg stretched out, the other bent at the knee. The heavy manacles meant to chain his wrists lay beside him like discarded jewelry, their locking mechanisms subtly warped, glowing faintly with the lingering residue of dark magic. He held a small, smooth pebble between thumb and forefinger, rolling it with hypnotic slowness. His eyes, dark as obsidian and just as sharp, lifted from the stone to meet hers. No surprise. Only a slow, insolent curve of his lips that wasn’t quite a smile.
"Princess Jasmine." His voice was a low purr, scraping velvet over gravel. It filled the small cell, intimate and dangerous. "To what do I owe this… unexpected pleasure? Checking on the state of your trophy?"
Jasmine stepped fully into the cell, the door swinging almost shut behind her. The air was thick, smelling of damp rock, ozone, and something else – cloves and old parchment. His scent. It coiled around her, unsettlingly familiar despite everything. She forced her spine straight, her chin high. The Princess of Agrabah. "Your chains seem remarkably… loose, Jafar."
He didn’t move from his negligent pose. "A minor oversight by the palace smithy. Easily remedied." He flicked a dismissive glance at the manacles. "Though unnecessary. Where, precisely, would I go? These walls hold more than iron." He gestured vaguely with the pebble at the stones shimmering with faint, ancient wards. "Your precautions are admirably thorough. If redundant."
"Redundant?" Jasmine took another step, her silk slippers silent on the gritty floor. The flickering torchlight painted dancing patterns on his angular face, deepening the hollows beneath his cheekbones, gilding the sharpness of his gaze. "Your ambition nearly destroyed everything."
"Ambition?" He chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Such a pedestrian word for vision, Princess. For seeing beyond the dusty confines of tradition. Agrabah slumbers. I merely sought to… awaken it." He finally shifted, unfolding himself from the bench with a languid grace that belied his confinement. He stood tall, imposing even in the rough-spun prisoner's tunic. The space between them shrank instantly, charged. "Much like you, I suspect."
Her breath hitched. "I am nothing like you."
"Aren't you?" He took a slow step closer, his shadow engulfing her. "Chafing against gilded cages? Yearning for something… more than the prescribed path? The dutiful daughter, the future queen bound by endless, suffocating rules?" His gaze swept over her, lingering on the stolen key still clutched in her hand. It wasn't judgmental; it was… knowing. Appreciative. "You sought me out. Not duty, Princess. Curiosity. A dangerous spark."
He was too close now. She could see the fine lines etched at the corners of his eyes, the dark intensity in his pupils. The warmth radiating from him contrasted sharply with the cell's chill. Her pulse hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She needed control. "I came to see the snake in its pit. To remind myself."
"Of my villainy?" His head tilted, a predator studying prey. "Or of the power that frightened your Sultan, threatened your precious Genie, and brought your gallant street rat prince to his knees?" He didn't touch her, but his presence was a physical weight. "Power fascinates you, Jasmine. It always has. You wear it like ill-fitting silks, pretending it doesn't thrill you." He leaned infinitesimally closer, his breath a warm whisper against her temple. "But I see it. That flicker in your eyes when a challenge sparks. That restless energy beneath the royal poise."
His words sank into her, unsettlingly accurate. He saw too much. More than Aladdin ever had. The air crackled, thick with unspoken challenge and the lingering tang of his magic.
He moved then. Not towards her face, but her hand. His long, elegant fingers, surprisingly unblemished despite imprisonment, brushed against the inside of her wrist where her pulse fluttered wildly. The touch was deliberate, feather-light, yet it sent a jolt through her that had nothing to do with static.
It was warmth. Deep, insistent warmth that coiled up her arm like a serpent made of mol
