Chapter 1: The Queen's Immobile Throne

The throne room smelled of rose oil, sweat, and cold stone. A low, perpetual groan of straining wood and leather underpinned every other sound, emanating from the massive, custom-built throne that held Queen Valeriana. She wasn’t sitting on it so much as she was poured into it, a great sea of flesh and velvet and power. Her hips, each one wider than a barrel, were wedged between the throne’s sculpted arms, layers of silk and cushion doing little to mask their immovable bulk. Her breasts, two immense, pale slopes, spilled heavily over the plush ivory ledge made to support them, their sheer weight seeming to anchor her to the very center of the world.

At her feet, the world was small.

Courtiers knelt in silent rows, their slender forms practically childlike against the obsidian floor. They didn’t dare look up. The only movement came from the team of six attendants, women of medium status like Maren, who scurried on whispered footsteps, adjusting a cushion here, blotting a bead of perspiration from the royal neck there.

Maren’s knees ached against the hard stone. She held a cloth of spun gold, her focus narrow as a laser on a single, glistening crumb of honey-cake caught in the crease of the Queen’s lower lip. Her own breath felt loud in her ears. She reached up, her hand steady despite the tremor in her gut.

“You hover like a gnat,” Valeriana rumbled. Her voice was a low, tectonic thing, felt in the chest as much as heard. Her cold blue eyes, sharp as chips of winter sky, stared fixedly ahead, not deigning to look down at Maren. “Do your duty or be replaced.”

Maren dabbed the cloth. The crumb came away. She withdrew, bowing her head. “It is done, Your Majesty.”

“Is it?” The Queen shifted, a monumental effort that sent a shudder through the throne’s frame. A cushion sighed in protest. “Nothing is ‘done.’ Stability is a fiction. I feel it. A vibration in the floor. A shift in the air when the smaller ones think I’m not looking.” Her gaze finally swept down, pinning Maren. “You hear things, don’t you, little mouse? In the scullery. The washing yards. What do the smaller women say?”

Maren’s throat tightened. She kept her eyes on the Queen’s jeweled slipper, which was the size of a loaf of bread. “They speak of your radiant health, Majesty. Of the kingdom’s prosperity.”

A dry, humorless sound escaped Valeriana. It wasn’t a laugh. “Lies are a useful skill. Cherish it. But don’t waste them on me.” She leaned forward, a cascade of flesh realigning with a soft, heavy sound. The pressure in the room intensified. “They whisper about change. They whisper about men. Those few, scrawny relics. They whisper that a body too great to move is a body too great to rule. Don’t they?”

The question was a trap. Admit to hearing treason, and you were complicit. Deny it, and you were a fool. Maren chose the fool’s path. “I have heard no such whispers, Your Majesty. Only awe.”

Valeriana studied her for a long, unbearable moment. The air hummed. Then, she settled back, a wave receding from a shore. “Awe and fear are first cousins. They share a house. See that they do not get ambitious and redecorate.” She waved a languid hand, its fingers thick as sausages. “The audience is dulling my senses. Clear the court. All but my attendants.”

A ripple of motion. The kneeling courtiers rose as one and scurried backward, vanishing through the high, arched doors without a sound. Soon, only the six attendants remained, Maren among them, standing in a silent half-circle before the mountain of their queen.

Valeriana’s eyes grew distant, contemplative. She ran a hand over the staggering curve of her own belly, encased in sapphire-blue silk. “Power must be felt,” she murmured, almost to herself. “Not just seen. Not just obeyed. Felt, in the blood and the bone.” Her sharp eyes refocused, sweeping over her waiting women. “This restlessness… it is a chill. I require warmth.”

She let the command hang, a palpable weight.

Then she gave the order, her voice dropping to a rough, dark velvet. “Pleasure me.”

The words weren’t loud, but they fell like stones. No one flinched. This was a known duty. Two attendants moved to the massive, cushioned footrest, their hands beginning to knead the immense, pillared calves. Another climbed a discreet set of steps behind the throne to work at the royal temples, her fingers vanishing in the platinum hair.

Maren’s assigned place was at the left flank. She approached the vast expanse of the Queen’s hip, the silk warm from the body heat radiating beneath. She placed her hands flat and began to press in slow, firm circles, feeling the dense, immutable flesh beneath. The scent of rose oil and female sweat grew stronger.

Another attendant, Elara, attended to the Queen’s right breast, her motions rhythmic and practiced. Valeriana’s breath deepened. Her head lolled back against the throne, a low sigh escaping her. It was a sound of raw sovereignty, of consumption.

“Deeper,” the Queen commanded, her voice now a throaty murmur.

Maren increased the pressure, her small hands working against a geography of pure power. She felt the faint, slow tremor of the Queen’s heartbeat through layers of fat and muscle, a distant drum in a fortress. She watched the cold, calculating face soften, the sharp blue eyes shutter slightly. This was the vulnerability, the open mouth of the beast. It was here, in this performed intimacy, that the Queen was most dangerous and most paradoxically exposed.

Valeriana’s hand suddenly shot out, grasping Elara’s wrist by the breast. “Not like a clockwork toy,” she hissed. “With feeling. Do you think I am a machine to be oiled?”

“N-no, Majesty,” Elara stammered.

“Then pretend you are devoted. All of you. Pretend your love for your Queen is not just a sentence they teach you in the crib. Pour it into your hands.” She released Elara with a slight shove. Her eyes found Maren’s in the dim light. “You. Mouse. You have quiet hands. They hold a different tension. What do you pour into yours?”

Maren didn’t stop her motions. She met the Queen’s gaze, a spark of reckless defiance cutting through her fear. “Truth, Majesty,” she said softly. “I pour the truth that my arms are tired, my back aches, and that I wish for my own bed.”

Silence, save for the sound of hands on silk and skin.

Then, Valeriana laughed. It was a real laugh, booming and sudden, shaking the great shelves of her body. “Finally. A hint of flavor. Tiredness. Ache. Want. Honest things. Small things.” Her laughter subsided into a wide, indulgent smile. “You may keep your truth, little mouse. For now. It amuses me.”

The Queen closed her eyes again, giving herself over to the sensations. Maren worked, her mind racing faster than her hands. The threat had been voiced, the paranoia laid bare. The queen sensed the storm, but she thought it was a summer squall, something she could weather from within her fortified palace of flesh.

She was wrong.

And as Maren kneaded the endless expanse of hip, transmitting a false devotion through her aching fingers, she knew the first drops of that storm were already falling, far away in the city’s warren-like lower levels, in a hidden room where a man named Kaelen was no longer a man at all. The vibration in the floor was real. The shift in the air was coming.

And it would not be pleasurable.
