This story takes place a year after the events in my last book called The wife’s shadow. Sasha and Emily are going through a tough time and Emily is just as physically abusive as ever but Sasha isn’t reacting the way she used to. Having to lose out on the love her life Zane out of fear has really made her harbor some intense resentment towards Emily. Out of anger Emily hunts down Zane and blames him for the problems in her and Sasha’s relationship. After an altercation, Emily ends up putting Zane in the hospital after stabbing him. This is the last straw for Sasha and she finally works up the courage to leave Emily for good. She nurses Zane back to health and they reignite their love for each other.

Chapter 4: Stitches and Vows

The smell hit him first. Antiseptic, sharp and cold, stinging his nostrils. Underneath, the faint metallic tang of blood and the stale, recycled air of recirculated illness. Pain came next, a layered symphony of agony. A deep, throbbing burn in his shoulder, a constellation of sharp aches across his ribs, a dull, persistent hammering in his skull. His mouth tasted like dried blood and stale cotton.

Zane forced his eyes open. Blurred shapes swam into focus: the sterile white ceiling tiles, harsh fluorescent lights, the beeping green line of a heart monitor beside him. Tubes snaked from his good arm. Hospital. He tried to move his right arm, the one attached to the worst pain, and a white-hot jolt seared up his neck, forcing a choked gasp.

Movement registered in his periphery. He turned his head slowly, painfully, on the thin pillow. She was there. Slumped in a hard plastic chair pulled close to the bed, her head resting against the edge of the mattress. Sandy brown curls spilled across the white sheet, messy and unkempt. Sasha.

Even bruised and exhausted, the sight of her punched the air from his lungs. Then his eyes locked onto the fresh bruise blooming across her left cheekbone, a vivid purple-black blossom against the paleness of her skin. It was new. Anger, cold and sharp, sliced through the pain medication fog. Emily.

His fingers twitched. Sasha stirred instantly, as if tuned to his frequency even in sleep. Her eyes fluttered open, big and blue, the color of a stormy sea. They were bloodshot, swollen from crying, filled with a profound exhaustion that went bone-deep. But when they focused on him, truly saw him awake, a raw vulnerability flooded them, followed by a wave of relief so intense it made her tremble.

She didn’t speak. No words seemed adequate in the sterile quiet of the ER cubicle, punctuated only by the rhythmic beep of the monitor and distant hospital sounds. Slowly, hesitantly, she reached across the narrow space. Her small, cool fingers found his uninjured left hand where it lay on the sheet. She interlaced her fingers with his, her grip surprisingly strong. Then, with infinite tenderness, she lifted his knuckles to her lips. Her kiss was soft, lingering, pressed against his bruised skin. He felt the wetness of her tears and the faint tremor in her lips. It wasn't just relief. It was an apology. A plea. A vow. A silent scream of I see what she did. I see you. And beneath it all, a terrifying, simmering promise: This ends.

Her tears fell, warm against his knuckles. He squeezed her hand back, the only strength he could muster. His voice, when it finally came, was a shredded whisper. "Sasha... your face..."

She flinched, her gaze dropping for a second, shame briefly eclipsing the anger. "Later," she whispered back, her voice thick. "Just... just be still. You’re hurt so bad, Zane." Her free hand brushed a damp dreadlock from his forehead, her touch feather-light. "The laundromat lady... Mrs. Petrovic... she saved you. Called 911, stayed with you. Told them everything she heard you say. Emily’s name... my name... she told the police."

Zane absorbed this. The pendant. He’d dropped it. "The chain...?"

Sasha reached into the pocket of her worn hoodie – one of his old ones, he realized with a pang – and pulled it out. The simple silver disc glinted dully under the harsh lights. "Mrs. Petrovic found it. Gave it to the paramedics with you." She pressed it into his palm. "I kept it safe."

He closed his fingers around the metal, its familiar shape grounding him. Holding onto her, holding onto this small piece of themselves Emily hadn't managed to destroy. The monitor beeped faster. His heart hammered against his bruised ribs. The sheer magnitude of her presence, the relief, the fury at her bruise, the memory of Emily’s violence – it all crashed over him in a dizzying wave. "She... she tried to kill me, Sash. Said she’d make me disappear. Said... said you belonged to her. Like a dog." The words tasted like bile.

Sasha’s grip on his hand tightened until his knuckles whitened. Her eyes, when she lifted them to his, were no longer stormy. They were glacial. Arctic. "I know," she said, the two words scraped raw. "I saw the photo she left you. The one of me." A muscle jumped in her jaw. "I found your phone smashed in the kitchen trash. Saw the call log. Knew she’d lured you out. Knew… knew what she was capable of. I went looking… ended up at the bar… saw the police tape by the dumpsters… the blood washed pale by the rain…" Her voice hitched. "I thought… Zane, I thought…"

She couldn’t finish. A sob racked her small frame. She buried her face against their clasped hands, her shoulders shaking. The sight undid him. Ignoring the screaming protest from his shoulder, he managed to lift his left arm, wrapping it clumsily around her, pulling her head gently against his less-injured side. She came willingly, folding herself against him, her tears soaking into the thin hospital gown. He pressed his lips to the top of her head, breathing in the familiar scent of her hair beneath the hospital smell – vanilla and graphite and Sasha. A scent he’d thought he might never smell again.

"I'm here," he murmured into her hair, his voice rough. "I'm right here, baby. You found me." The endearment slipped out, old and instinctive.

She lifted her tear-streaked face. The bruise looked angrier up close. Her gaze searched his, filled with a desperate, aching need. Not just for comfort, but for confirmation. That he was real. That she hadn't lost him again because of her monster. Slowly, tentatively, she leaned up. Her lips brushed his, a butterfly touch, tasting of salt and fear and an overwhelming longing. It was hesitant, fragile, a question.

He answered it. With painstaking care, mindful of his injuries and hers, he deepened the kiss. It wasn't fiery passion, not yet. It was reconnection. A re-mapping of territory stolen. A silent affirmation: We are here. We survived her. Her lips were soft, yielding, opening under his with a small sigh that vibrated straight through him. Her hand slid up his chest, avoiding the thick bandage on his shoulder, coming to rest against the side of his neck, her thumb stroking the line of his jaw. His good hand tangled in her curls, holding her close, anchoring himself in the reality of her.

The kiss deepened, fueled by the adrenaline of survival, the terror of loss narrowly avoided, the fierce, protective fury they both felt. It became hungry, seeking. Tongues touched, tentative at first, then sliding together with a desperate familiarity. The sterile room, the beeping monitor, the pain – it all receded, narrowing down to the warm press of her mouth, the soft sounds she made low in her throat, the feel of her body trembling against his. He could feel her heartbeat thrumming against his chest, fast and frantic, matching his own racing pulse on the monitor.

Her hand slid lower, tracing the edge of the hospital gown where it gaped near his collarbone. Her touch was electric, even through the thin fabric. He groaned softly into her mouth, the sound muffled. She pulled back just enough to look at him, her blue eyes dark, dilated, reflecting the raw need he felt burning in his own gut. "Zane..." she breathed, her voice husky. "Are you... can you...?"

He nodded, wincing only slightly as he shifted. The pain was a distant thrum, overwhelmed by the fierce, aching need for her. To erase the violation, the cold, hateful touch of Emily, with Sasha’s warmth. To reclaim his body, their intimacy. "Need you, Sash," he rasped. "Need to feel you. Now."

She didn't hesitate. With surprising efficiency, born of a desperate urgency that mirrored his own, she stood. Her eyes scanned the small cubicle. The curtain was pulled shut for privacy, but the thin fabric offered only illusion. The risk, the sheer recklessness of it, only heightened the intensity. She locked the flimsy door latch. Her fingers went to the drawstring of her sweatpants. She pushed them down along with her underwear in one swift movement, kicking them aside. She stood before him for a heartbeat, pale skin glowing in the harsh light, the dark triangle of curls at the junction of her thighs, the curve of her hips and breasts beneath the hoodie. Beautiful. His. Bruised, but unbroken.

Then she was climbing onto the narrow hospital bed, careful not to jostle his bandaged shoulder. She straddled his hips, the thin hospital gown the only barrier between her heat and his growing erection, which strained insistently against the fabric, thick and heavy despite his injuries. Her weight settled, warm and real. She leaned down, capturing his mouth again in a searing kiss as her hand slipped beneath the gown, finding him. Her fingers wrapped around his thick shaft, hot and firm, stroking him slowly, deliberately, her thumb swirling over the sensitive head already slick with pre-cum. He gasped, his hips lifting slightly off the bed, a groan tearing from him. Her touch wasn't like Emily’s clinical torture; it was knowing, possessive, loving. Claiming what was hers.

"Fuck, Sasha," he breathed against her lips, his voice thick with desire. "God, yes… just like that…"

She broke the kiss, her breath coming fast, her eyes locked on his. There was a ferocity there, a determination burning through the vulnerability. "I need to feel you inside me," she whispered, raw and urgent. "Need you to fill me up. Make me forget. Make us forget." Her hand positioned him, the broad head of his cock pressing against her slick entrance. She was wet, incredibly so, her arousal a visceral counterpoint to the sterile environment. She sank down onto him slowly, inch by agonizingly perfect inch, her head thrown back, a low moan escaping her parted lips.

He watched, mesmerized, as she took him, her face a mask of intense concentration and profound relief. She was tight, gloriously so, her inner muscles clenching around his girth as she sheathed him fully, her body accepting him with a shuddering sigh. "Oh God, Zane... yes... so deep..." she gasped, her hips grinding down, seating him impossibly deeper.

She began to move. Slowly at first, rising almost all the way up until just the head remained inside, then sliding back down with deliberate, rolling thrusts that dragged every nerve ending along her velvety walls. Her hands braced on his chest, careful of his injuries, her eyes never leaving his. Each downward stroke was a reclamation, each lift a promise. The friction was exquisite, building a heat low in his belly that pushed the lingering pain into the background. The only reality was the slick, hot clasp of her pussy, the rhythmic creak of the hospital bed, her breathy moans, and the frantic beeping of the heart monitor, betraying the intensity they tried to contain.

He lifted his good hand, cupping her breast through the hoodie, feeling her nipple harden against his palm. She arched into his touch, her movements becoming faster, more urgent. "Harder," she gasped, her voice breaking. "Fuck me harder, Zane. Need to feel you... really feel you..."

He gritted his teeth, anchoring his feet on the mattress, ignoring the screaming protest from his ribs as he thrust upwards to meet her downward strokes. The force jolted them both. She cried out, not in pain, but in pure, desperate ecstasy. "Yes! Fuck! Like that! Don't stop! Make me yours again!" Her pussy gripped him like a fist, milking his cock with each powerful thrust. Her hoodie rode up, revealing the swell of her belly, the curve of her waist. He slid his hand down her back, gripping her ass, pulling her down onto him with bruising force, driving himself deeper with each powerful upward surge of his hips. The bed groaned in protest.

She was panting now, little gasping cries with each deep penetration. Her inner muscles fluttered wildly around him, signaling her approaching climax. He could feel his own release coiling tight, an unstoppable wave building at the base of his spine. The raw need, the sheer, defiant intimacy of fucking hard and fast in a hospital bed, surrounded by the evidence of Emily’s hate, pushed them both towards the edge. He watched her face, flushed and beautiful, her lips parted, her eyes squeezed shut in concentration, then flying open wide.

"Zane! I'm... I'm coming!" she shrieked, the sound partly muffled against his shoulder as her body locked, then shattered. Her pussy clamped down on him in a series of violent, rhythmic spasms, hot and wet and impossibly tight. The sensation ripped his own control away. With a guttural groan that tore from the depths of his chest, he thrust up one final, deep time, burying himself to the hilt as his cock pulsed, jetting thick ropes of hot cum deep inside her clenching channel. She collapsed forward onto his chest, trembling violently, her breath coming in ragged sobs against his neck, her inner muscles still fluttering around his softening cock, milking the last drops from him.

They lay like that for long moments, tangled, breathless, sweat-slicked skin pressed together, the frantic beeping of the monitor gradually slowing to a steadier rhythm. The scent of sex mingled incongruously with the antiseptic. Her fingers traced the edge of the bandage on his shoulder, her touch infinitely gentle now.

"I turned her into the police," she whispered into the hollow of his neck, her voice raw, utterly devoid of emotion.

Zane froze. The post-coital haze evaporated instantly, replaced by a chilling clarity. He gently tilted her head back so he could see her eyes. They weren't filled with tears now. They were flat. Empty. Resigned. "Sasha? What do you mean?"

She didn't flinch. Her gaze held his, steady and terrifyingly calm. "After I saw the blood... after I knew... I went home. She was there. Waiting. Smiling. Asked if I'd found my 'nigger lover's corpse'." Sasha’s voice was a monotone. "Something snapped. The photo... the phone... the blood... what she did to you... what she’s done to me for years... I just... couldn’t let her keep getting away with hurting people." She took a shaky breath. "Especially not you. When fell asleep I called the police and arrested her."

Silence stretched, thick and suffocating. The heart monitor beeped, a steady, accusing rhythm. The warmth of their coupling turned cold. Zane stared at the fresh bruise on her cheek – Emily’s last mark. Not just a bruise. A testament to the final, desperate fight.

Before he could process, before he could speak, a sharp rap sounded on the cubicle door, followed by a firm, professional voice cutting through the thin curtain. "Mr. Walker? Sasha Chen? It’s Detective Ruiz. We need to talk. Now."

The knock hammered against the flimsy cubicle door again, sharp, insistent. "Mr. Walker? Sasha Chen? Detective Ruiz. Open up." The voice was flat, professional, cutting through the humid air thick with the scent of sex and antiseptic.

Sasha froze against Zane, her body rigid where she lay half-sprawled on his chest. Her eyes, wide with sudden alarm, locked onto his. Naked vulnerability replaced the fierce, post-coital heat. The reality of the thin curtain, the unlocked latch Ruiz could easily override, the detective waiting feet away while Zane’s seed cooled inside her – it crashed down. Panic flared.

"Shit," Zane breathed, the word harsh against her temple. Agony flared in his shoulder as he tried to shift, to shield her. "The gown… pants… quick!" Pain made his voice tight, urgent.

Sasha scrambled, a frantic tangle of limbs. She rolled off him, wincing as his softening cock slipped wetly from her. The cold hospital air hit her exposed skin, raising goosebumps. She grabbed her discarded sweatpants and underwear from the floor, yanking them up her legs with trembling hands, fumbling with the drawstring. Her hoodie felt like a flimsy shield. She snatched Zane’s hospital gown, pulling it roughly across his hips, covering his spent cock, sticky with their mingled fluids. He hissed as the fabric brushed his bandaged shoulder. The heart monitor spiked erratically.

"Just… just a second!" Sasha called out, her voice pitched high, unconvincing. She smoothed her messy curls, wiped hastily at her mouth. The fresh bruise on her cheekbone seemed to pulse under the fluorescent lights, a silent accusation. Zane watched her, his jaw clenched, the fury at Emily warring with the acute vulnerability of their position. The silver pendant lay forgotten on the sheet between them.

The door handle rattled. The latch gave way with a click. Detective Ruiz pushed the curtain aside. He was a compact man with weary eyes and a neatly trimmed beard, his expression carefully neutral as he took in the scene: Sasha flushed and flustered, hastily retying her pants, Zane pale and bandaged on the bed, the sheets rumpled, the air unmistakably intimate despite the sterile setting. His gaze lingered for a fraction of a second on Sasha’s bruise, then flicked to Zane’s heavily bandaged shoulder, the fading marks on his face, the tension crackling between them. Chen. Mr. Walker," Ruiz nodded, stepping fully inside, closing the curtain behind him. His eyes scanned the small space – the single plastic chair, the monitors, the discarded tissues near the bed. The silence stretched, thick with everything unsaid: the violence in the rain-slicked lot, the violation in the BMW’s back seat, the desperate, raw coupling that had just happened on this very bed. "I apologize for the intrusion. Hospital said Mr. Walker was awake." His gaze settled on Zane. "You look like hell, son."

"Feel worse," Zane grated out, his voice raw. He kept his left hand near Sasha’s hip, a point of contact, anchoring them both. "Heard you arrested Emily Chen."

Ruiz’s eyes narrowed slightly. "That’s correct. Based on Ms. Chen’s statement and physical evidence recovered from the scene." He pulled out a small notebook. "Mr. Walker, I need your account of what happened tonight. From the beginning. The call you received, the meeting at the bar, the assault." He glanced at Sasha. "And Ms. Chen, while Mr. Walker recounts his statement, I need to formally ask about the events at your residence leading to your wife’s arrest. Particularly the nature of the altercation that resulted in" – he gestured vaguely towards her cheek – "that injury."

Sasha flinched, her hand unconsciously rising to cover the bruise. Zane felt a fresh wave of protective rage, hot and vicious. He squeezed her hip, a silent I’m here. The memory of Emily straddling him, her hateful touch, her words – My wife wore it while I fucked her tonight – surged, making him nauseous. He forced himself to focus on Ruiz’s expectant face. The sterile room felt like a cage again, the detective’s presence a cold reminder of the world outside their fragile bubble.

"Start with the call," Ruiz prompted, his pen poised.

Zane took a shallow, painful breath. "It was Emily," he began, his voice low but steady. "Fake number. Said Sasha was hurt. Bad. Needed me at the bar. Sent a photo…" He closed his eyes for a second, seeing it again – Sasha’s battered face. "A photo of Sasha. Beaten. Told me to come alone. Bring cash." He opened his eyes, meeting Ruiz’s gaze directly, letting the detective see the lingering terror, the fury. "I walked into the rain. She was waiting. Came from behind."

He described the cold shock of the gun barrel – knife barrel? – jamming into his ribs, Emily’s wiry strength pinning him, the venom in her whisper. You took something from me. He detailed the pat-down, the stolen phone and wallet, the keys clattering on asphalt, her chilling promise: Now I’ll take everything from you. Starting with your dignity. He skipped the specifics of the forced entry into the BMW, the cold leather, the paralyzing fear, focusing instead on the assault in the car – the blow to his head, the tearing pain as she forced him inside, the knife appearing again.

"She had a knife," he confirmed, his hand drifting towards his bandaged shoulder. "Pressed it here." His voice hardened. "Told me Sasha belonged to her. Like property. Said she’d make me disappear." He recounted the stab wound, the blinding agony, Emily’s deranged commentary as she violated his body. He forced the words out, clinical, detached, omitting the graphic sexual details but making the violation, the intent, brutally clear. "She assaulted me. Sexually. Physically. Then stabbed me in the shoulder before kicking me out. Left me to bleed."

Ruiz scribbled rapidly, his expression impassive but his knuckles white on the pen. "And the pendant? The laundromat witness mentioned it."

"Sasha’s," Zane said simply, glancing at the silver disc on the sheet. "Emily mentioned it. Taunted me with it. Said Sasha wore it while…" He couldn’t finish that sentence. Not here. Not now.

Ruiz’s gaze shifted to Sasha. The question hung heavy. Sasha swallowed, her throat tight. "She was furious I’d gone looking for Zane," she started, her voice thin. "When I got home… she was waiting. Smug. Asked if I’d found 'my nigger lover's corpse'." Ruiz’s pen paused briefly at the slur. "She showed me the photo she sent him. Bragged about setting the trap. About what she’d done." Sasha’s voice gained a brittle edge. "I… snapped. Years. Photos. The smashed phone. The blood in the alley…" She looked down at her hands. "We fought. She hit me. Hard." Her fingers brushed the bruise. "I hit her back. Harder. Pinned her. Called 911 while she screamed threats. They took her. I came straight here."

Ruiz nodded slowly, closing his notebook. "Thank you both. We recovered the BMW. Forensics is going over it thoroughly. We have the photo evidence from your smashed phone, Ms. Chen, the laundromat witness statement, the physical evidence on both of you." He looked from Zane’s bandages to Sasha’s bruise. "Emily Chen is in custody. Charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, sexual assault, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and making terroristic threats. She’s not getting out anytime soon. But," he added, his gaze settling on Sasha with a weight that made her stomach drop, "she’s demanding to see you, Ms. Chen. Says she has something critically important to tell you. About him." He nodded towards Zane. "Refuses to speak to anyone else. Claims it’s life or death."

Silence slammed down. The beeping monitor was suddenly deafening. Sasha felt Zane’s hand tighten painfully on her hip. "Absolutely not," Zane growled, the words laced with protective fury. "She doesn’t get near her. Ever again."

Ruiz held up a placating hand. "Entirely your decision, Ms. Chen. You don’t have to see her. Frankly, I wouldn’t advise it. She’s manipulative, dangerous. This is likely just another tactic. But," he hesitated, "she’s adamant. Hysterical, even. Says if you don’t come, you’ll regret it forever. That she has proof." His gaze was steady. "It’s your call. But if you choose to go, we can arrange it. Maximum security booth. Recorded. She never gets within ten feet of you." He paused. "She mentioned the pendant."

Sasha’s breath hitched. The pendant. Emily’s taunt echoed: My wife wore it while I fucked her tonight. What possible "proof" could she have about Zane? What poisonous lie? The seed of doubt, cultivated by years of Emily’s manipulation, took root despite her resolve. Her eyes flickered to Zane, searching his face, then back to the pendant. The silence stretched, thick with tension and the terrifying unknown Emily dangled before them. The sterile hospital room felt like the edge of another abyss.
