Chapter 2: Truth and Dares
The silence after Stella’s stumbling exit felt physical, a thick, suffocating blanket thrown over the room. The fairy lights buzzed like trapped insects. The radio’s low hum was suddenly oppressive. Willow stared at the closed door, confusion warring with a lingering, hungry curiosity on her face. June looked like she wanted to crawl under Marigold’s bed.
Marigold’s gaze remained locked on the darkening wine stain spreading on her rug. It mirrored the bruise blooming inside her chest. That raw, unexpected vulnerability Stella had shown for a split second – the quiet kiss in the rain – felt like a violation worse than the drunken flirtation. It was private. Sacred. And Willow had stomped right into it.
"You asked her that?" Marigold’s voice was low, brittle. She didn’t look up. "About her best kiss? Point-blank? After seeing her like... that?" She finally lifted her eyes, scanning between her friends. "What is wrong with you?"
Willow flinched, then rallied, her defensiveness sharp. "It was just a game, Mari! Lighten up. She said ‘truth’. She was into it! Well, mostly. Until..." She waved a hand vaguely, dismissing Stella's abrupt exit. "Besides, it’s not like we haven’t done stuff like that before. Asked our moms stuff."
"Asked them what, exactly?" Marigold pressed, her knuckles white where they still gripped the pillow. The image of Willow’s knee pressed against Stella’s silk-clad thigh flashed in her mind. "What kind of ‘dares’? What ‘games’ do you play with your mothers that involve asking about their sex lives?"
June shifted uncomfortably, her voice a nervous whisper. "Marigold, it’s not… it’s not always like that. Sometimes it’s just silly stuff. Like what embarrassing thing Dad did last week."
"Sometimes?" Marigold’s focus snapped to June. "But not always. Willow said dares. Like the one with Becca’s mom. ‘Experimented in college’? Seriously? You think that’s normal pillow-fight conversation?"
June flushed crimson, looking down at her hands. "My mom… she’s my stepmom, Mari. You know that. It’s… different. Less formal sometimes."
"Different how?" Marigold wouldn’t let it go. The wine stain seemed to pulse on the rug. "Because she’s not blood? Does that make it okay to… to push boundaries? To ask things you wouldn’t dream of asking your real mom?" The words tasted bitter, conjuring the ghost of her own mother’s gentle, distant absence.
Willow leaned forward, her eyes bright with a strange mix of defiance and excitement. "Okay, fine! Maybe it is different with stepmoms! Or just… moms who aren’t total prudes. Lighten up, Mari. It’s not all deep, dark secrets. Sometimes it’s just… fun." She took a breath, her voice dropping slightly, a conspiratorial edge returning. "Like, okay, last month? Truth or dare with Brenda – that’s my mom? I dared her to give me a kiss. Like, a proper kiss. On the mouth. A real one."
The air crackled. June made a small, choked sound.
Marigold felt the room tilt. "You… you dared your mom to kiss you? On the mouth?"
Willow shrugged, a defiant tilt to her chin. "Yeah. So what? It was just a dare. She did it! Bit awkward, sure, but also kinda…" She trailed off, searching for the word, a faint flush creeping up her own neck. "Electric? Like, weirdly intense."
"And?" Marigold’s voice was dangerously quiet. "Did you like it?"
Willow hesitated, then met Marigold’s gaze head-on. "It wasn’t about liking it like… that. It was the dare. The buzz. Pushing the line." She glanced at June, then back at Marigold, a flicker of something challenging in her eyes. "June’s done stuff too. Haven’t you, June?"
June looked like she might be sick. "Willow, don’t—"
"Come on! That time with Carol?" Willow pushed. "After too much wine at Christmas? The foot rub thing?"
June’s face was crimson. "It wasn’t a dare! She had a cramp! I just… rubbed her feet. That’s all!"
Willow raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Uh-huh. For like, twenty minutes? While she sighed and practically melted into the couch? And you kept going way after the cramp was gone? Admit it, you were curious. What it felt like. Touching her like that."
June didn’t deny it. She just hugged her knees tighter, staring fixedly at a poster on the wall, radiating mortification and something else – a reluctant, shamed fascination.
Marigold stared at them. Her friends. Her best friends. Confessing to… this. Kissing their mothers. Giving lingering foot rubs. Finding it "electric." "Weirdly intense." It was incomprehensible. Alien. A violation of boundaries she couldn’t even fathom crossing. Her own mother’s cheek was the softest thing she remembered, her hugs safe harbors. The idea of demanding a kiss… it felt grotesque.
But a treacherous, unwelcome warmth flickered low in Marigold’s belly as Willow described the kiss. Electric. The word echoed, conjuring an image not of Willow and her mother, but of Stella’s flushed face in the dim light, her silk dress slipping, the raw vulnerability in her voice describing that kiss in the rain. Stopped time. The warmth pulsed, a confusing counterpoint to the icy disgust and resentment swirling inside her. It was horrifying. It was… intriguing. An echo of the forbidden allure Willow and June seemed so captivated by. The same allure radiating off Stella tonight.
The silence stretched, thick and sour like the spilled wine soaking into her rug. Willow’s defiant smirk faltered under Marigold’s horrified stare, June’s mortified blush deepening to scarlet. The fairy lights buzzed, the only sound in the room choked with confession and judgment.
"See?" Willow finally broke, her voice losing its earlier bravado, turning almost pleading. "It’s not that weird. It’s just… curiosity. Testing limits." She gestured vaguely towards the door where Stella had vanished. "She’s not your real mom, Mari. It’s different."
Marigold recoiled. "That makes it worse! She’s grieving, she’s drunk, she’s… vulnerable! And you want to play truth or dare with her deepest moments?" Disgust warred with the unwelcome echo of Willow’s word: Electric. The image of Stella’s silk strap slipping, the raw hitch in her voice describing the rain-soaked kiss, flashed again.
Willow leaned forward, her eyes intense, voice dropping to a conspiratorial hiss. "Okay, fine! Forget Stella! Forget them." She jabbed a finger towards June, who flinched. "Just… think about it, Mari. Seriously." Her gaze locked onto Marigold’s. "Think about doing something… small. One little thing."
June made a small, distressed noise, shaking her head minutely, but Willow pressed on, relentless. "One kiss.Just one. Or an inappropriate hug. A touch that lasts a second too long. Something that makes you feel that buzz." Her voice was hypnotic, weaving through the tense air. "Think how it would feel. The risk. The absolute freedom of it. To just… step over that line everyone else is scared of."
She paused, letting the words sink into the charged silence. "Do that," she whispered, leaning so close Marigold could smell the sugary gummy worms on her breath, "and you’d join us. For real. You’d know what it’s like. We’d be cemented. Forget awkwardness, forget tension. You’d understand."
Willow pulled back slightly, her eyes searching Marigold’s face. "Just… consider it. That’s all I’m asking. Think about how freeing it could be. To not care for once."
Marigold stared back, paralyzed. Revulsion churned in her stomach, bile rising at the thought of orchestrating such a violation with Stella. Her mother’s gentle ghost seemed to shimmer reproachfully in the corner. But beneath the disgust, beneath the loyalty to her mother’s memory and the sheer wrongness of it all, something else stirred.
A treacherous spark. A tiny, insidious flicker of what if? What would it feel like? That forbidden surge Willow described. The dangerous allure that had radiated from Stella on her bed, the messy vulnerability beneath the silk. The power in crossing a line everyone else respected. It felt obscene. It felt… possible.
The idea, vile and magnetic, sank its roots deep, a dark seed nestling into the fertile soil of her isolation and burgeoning, conflicted fascination. She looked away, towards the dark stain on the rug, unable to meet Willow’s expectant gaze or June’s horrified one. Her knuckles were bone-white on the pillow. She needed air. She needed out.
"Bathroom," Marigold muttered, her voice strangled. She pushed herself up from the floor, legs shaky, ignoring Willow’s sharp intake of breath and June’s whispered plea of her name. She stumbled towards her bedroom door, the fairy lights casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to reach for her. The seed was planted. Watered by resentment, confusion, and a terrifying, burgeoning curiosity. It was just a thought. But in the echoing quiet of her violated sanctuary, it felt enormous. Unstoppable.
The bathroom door clicked shut, sealing Marigold into the small, tiled space. Cool air from the vent washed over her hot face, a stark contrast to the feverish turmoil inside. She gripped the edge of the sink, knuckles white, staring blindly into the mirror. Her own reflection looked pale, haunted, eyes wide with a mixture of revulsion and… something else.
The task didn’t seem difficult. The thought slithered in, unbidden. How many times had she already steadied Stella? A palm braced against the soft curve of her back as she stumbled on the stairs, fingers brushing her bare arm when passing a wine glass. Stella’s flesh was supple beneath those silky fabrics. Warm. Real. What difference would one more touch make? One deliberate, lingering touch, not born of necessity but… curiosity? Connection? To bridge the awful chasm Willow had opened, to truly belong with her friends, understand their dangerous thrill?
What's one more to deepen her friendships? The logic was sickening, seductive. A shortcut through the awkwardness, a shared secret far darker than stolen lipstick or crushes on professors. She pictured Stella, drunk and pliant on her bed, the vulnerability beneath the silk. How easy it would be. A hand sliding upwards instead of steadying. A thumb tracing the strap that kept falling. Just one moment of crossing the line Willow described. That electric buzz.
The final thought snapped Marigold out of her internal conflict. A wave of self-loathing surged, cold and bracing, washing away the treacherous warmth. No. She splashed icy water on her face, gasping at the shock. This wasn't freedom; it was poison. Willow’s game was rotten. She dried her face roughly with a towel, the rough fabric grounding her. She wouldn't become that.
She pushed the bathroom door open, steeling herself to re-enter the chaos, to shut Willow down hard. But the sight that met her stopped her cold in the bedroom doorway.
Willow sat cross-legged on the sleeping bag, radiating a smug satisfaction. Her smile wasn't just triumphant; it was predatory, sharp, like a cat who had not only caught the mouse but played with it. June, however, looked rigid, perched stiffly on the edge of the bed. Her face was ashen, eyes huge and fixed on a point near the door, refusing to meet Marigold’s gaze. Her knuckles were clenched white in her lap.
The air felt different. Thicker. Charged with something that hadn't been there before Marigold left. Stella’s wine glass sat abandoned near the spilled stain, but there was something else. A faint, unfamiliar floral scent, cloying and expensive, layered over the spilled Chardonnay and perfume. And on the floor, halfway between the bed and the door, lay a crumpled silk scarf. Emerald green. Stella’s.
Marigold’s eyes snapped from the scarf to Willow’s Cheshire cat grin, then to June’s frozen horror. Her stomach plummeted. "What?" Marigold breathed, the word barely audible. Her gaze darted back to the scarf, then to the hallway beyond her open bedroom door. Silence. No sound from Stella’s room. "What did you do?" This time, louder, sharper, laced with dawning dread.
Willow’s grin widened, slow and deliberate. She stretched languidly, a performer relishing the spotlight. "We just… checked on her," she purred, her voice dripping with false innocence. "Poor thing looked like she might fall. June held her arm." She nodded towards June, who flinched as if struck. "And I… helped straighten her up. She was very unsteady."
"Helped how?" Marigold demanded, stepping fully into the room, her voice trembling. Her eyes scanned June, demanding an answer June refused to give, her gaze still glued to the floor. Marigold noticed now: a faint smudge of dark red lipstick, Stella’s shade, near the collar of June’s t-shirt. Barely visible, but there.
Willow shrugged, a picture of nonchalance that didn’t reach her glittering eyes. "Just a little support. Hand on her waist. Maybe… a bit higher. She barely noticed." She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper that felt like a violation in itself. "She didn’t pull away, Mari. Not even a little. Just sort of… leaned into it. Like she expected it." Willow’s smile turned brittle, challenging. "Guess we weren't the only ones curious."
