Chapter 2: Uninvited Guest
The morning light through Brad’s blinds was a merciless, slatted thing. It cut across Andy’s face, pulling him from a depth of sleep he hadn’t known in years. His body ached in a dozen new, fascinating ways. A heavy arm was thrown across his chest, a leg hooked possessively over his own.
Brad.
The reality of it, in the stark clarity of dawn, was terrifying. The room smelled of sex and stale beer. Andy’s mind, usually so orderly, scrambled to catalogue the last twelve hours. The whispered confessions in the dark, the shocking scrape of stubble, the give of muscle under his unsure hands. Brad had been a relentless, patient guide, his alpha swagger translated into a focused, overwhelming attention that had left Andy utterly unraveled.
He tried to slip out from under the arm. Instantly, the arm tightened, pulling him back against a solid, warm chest.
“Nope,” Brad murmured into the back of his neck, his voice gravelly with sleep. “Too early.”
“I have to go. Work. Shower. My own house.” Andy’s voice was thin.
“Later.” Brad nuzzled the spot behind his ear, his beard scratching the sensitive skin. “No one’s gonna miss you for an hour.” His hand splayed across Andy’s stomach, fingertips just dipping beneath the waistband of his borrowed sweatpants. A claim. Andy shuddered, half in fear, half in a longing so deep it felt congenital.
He let himself be held. For twenty stolen minutes, he existed only as a warm body in Brad’s bed, listening to the steady heartbeat against his spine. The fantasy had been safe because it was impossible. This reality was a live wire tossed into the tidy pond of his life.
The buzzer for the building’s front door erupted, a harsh, electronic blare.
Brad groaned, his body going tense. “The fuck.” He untangled himself, rolling out of bed with a single, fluid motion. He was naked, utterly unconcerned, a landscape of tattooed muscle and scars in the morning light. Andy pulled the sheet up to his chin, suddenly, acutely aware of his own hairy body, a trait Brad had, inexplicably, seemed fascinated by.
Brad stabbed the intercom button. “Yeah?”
“Yo, Brad! It’s Mark. Brought post-pump fuel. Let me up.”
Andy’s blood ran cold. Mark Olsen. The personal trainer from two doors down. Another one of his secret catalogue of alpha neighbors. Mark, with his perfectly curated gym selfies and his loud, opinionated talks about macro-nutrients on the shared front steps.
Brad shot a look at Andy, a slow, wicked grin spreading across his face. He didn’t ask. He just pressed the door release. “Come on up, mate.”
“Brad, no,” Andy hissed, scrambling. “I can’t—he can’t see me like this.”
“Like what?” Brad asked, pulling on a pair of grey sweatpants that hung low on his hips. “Relax.” He said it like it was that simple.
Andy was frantically looking for his shirt. It was across the room, a puddle of blue cotton on the beer-stained floor. He’d never make it. The knock came at the door, brisk and confident.
Brad walked over and opened it.
Mark stood there, backlit by the hallway light, holding two opaque shaker bottles. He was in tight athletic wear, his broad shoulders and tapered waist looking like a diagram of human performance. His smile was bright, practiced. “Figured you’d be rotting after last night’s rager. Got you a triple-scoop rehab special.” His eyes traveled past Brad, into the dim room, landing on the bed. On Andy.
The smile froze, then reconfigured into something slower, more analytical. He took in the scene: the rumpled sheets, Andy’s bare shoulders, the clear imprint of another body on the mattress. His gaze, sharp and assessing, lingered on Andy’s neck, where the evidence of Brad’s mouth was livid and unmistakable in the morning light.
A long, silent beat passed. The hum of the refrigerator seemed deafening.
Mark stepped inside, placing the shakes on the cluttered counter without looking away. His eyes darkened, not with anger, but with a pure, predatory interest. “Well,” he said, the word dropping into the quiet room. “This is a plot twist.”
Brad leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms. His smirk was pure, unadulterated provocation. “You want in on this too, Olsen? Prendergast here’s full of surprises.”
Andy felt like he was burning alive. He wanted to vanish, to sink through the mattress into the earth. This was his deepest secret, not just his sexuality, but the specific texture of his desire, laid bare for evaluation by two of its unknowing subjects.
Mark finally broke his stare, looking at Brad. He let out a low, appreciative whistle. “Jesus, Brad. You didn’t just bite him, you marked the territory.” He turned his attention back to Andy, his head tilted. “How’s the audit life, Andy? Seems like you’re doing some… hands-on due diligence.”
The joke was crude, but it broke the paralyzing tension. Andy found his voice, though it was a rasp. “It’s… fine.”
Mark walked closer, his movements efficient, like he was approaching a piece of unfamiliar equipment. He stopped at the foot of the bed. “Always thought you were the quiet type. Kept to yourself.” He reached out, not touching, but his hand hovered near Andy’s ankle under the sheet. “Brad’s a beast. You hold up okay?”
It was the weirdest kind of courtesy, wrapped in blatant appraisal. Andy just nodded, unable to form words.
Brad laughed, pushing off the doorframe. “He held up just fine.” He walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, his weight making Andy roll slightly toward him. He placed a hand on Andy’s leg, over the sheet. A simultaneous comfort and a brand. “So, Mark. You just here for protein delivery, or you got a point?”
Mark’s eyes flicked between Brad’s possessive hand and Andy’s face. A calculated look passed over his features, the same one he probably used when deciding on a new training regimen. “The point,” he said slowly, “is that the game’s more interesting than I knew.” He picked up one of the shaker bottles, unscrewed the lid, and took a long drink, his eyes never leaving them. “You two gonna be a thing now? Gonna scandalize the homeowners’ association?”
“Fuck the HOA,” Brad said, but he was watching Mark closely, a challenge in his gaze.
“Yeah,” Mark agreed, a slow smile forming. “Yeah, fuck ’em.” He recapped the bottle. “I’ve got clients in twenty. But this…” He gestured loosely at the bed, the room, the two of them. “This is a conversation for later. You good, Andy?”
The question, direct and aimed at him, was the most unsettling part. Andy managed another nod.
“Right.” Mark turned to leave, pausing at the door. He looked back, his gaze landing squarely on Andy. “Take some iron. And maybe some concealer.” Then he was gone, the door clicking softly shut behind him.
The silence he left in his wake was different. Charged. Expanded.
Brad let out a long breath. “Well. That happened.”
Andy stared at the ceiling. His heart was a frantic bird in a cage. “He knows. Everyone will know.”
“Maybe.” Brad stretched, the muscles in his back rippling. “So what? Mark’s not a gossip. He’s just… interested.”
“Interested?” Andy propped himself up on his elbows. “What does that even mean?" Brad looked down at him, his expression unreadable. Then he leaned over, bracing himself on either side of Andy, caging him in. The intimacy was abrupt, overwhelming. “It means you’re not the only one full of surprises, Andy.” He dipped his head, his lips a hair’s breadth from Andy’s. “And it means the morning just got a whole lot more interesting.”
